Civil Rights and Good Government Groups Sue Postmaster General and Others for Actions That Will Disrupt the 2020 Election Cycle

Lawsuit Asserts That DeJoy Has Caused Service Delays That Could Negatively Impact the Delivery of Mail-In Ballots

WASHINGTON

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law will host a tele-press conference call with Common Cause, theLeague of Women Voters of the United States and the National Urban League on August 19, at 12:15 p.m. EDT, to announce the Tuesday evening filing of a federal lawsuit, against newly-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the U.S. PostalDeJoy Service. DeJoy, with the support of President Donald Trump, has implemented a destructive behind-the-scenes overhaul of postal procedures which have negatively impacted Americans.

Postmaster DeJoy announced on Tuesday, in the face of national outrage, that he would suspend special initiatives that have disrupted mail delivery across the country. However, DeJoy's empty rhetoric did not outline a comprehensive plan for restoring the status quo at the Postal Service.

Mail-in ballots have exploded in popularity and prevalence since the onset of America's deadly COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic has killed hundreds of thousands in an election year and heightened Americans' need to rely on their U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to both cast their votes and stay healthy. This increased need has been met by Trump administration policies that have erected barriers to the efficient receipt and delivery of items like mail-in ballots and other items.

The lawsuit seeks to stop DeJoy and Trump from further weaponizing the USPS against Americans' need to vote.
