Federal GE Food Labeling Bill a Win for Consumers

Statement of Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter

WASHINGTON

"We applaud Senators Boxer and DeFazio for standing up to the pressure of the agrochemical industry and listening to the groundswell of grassroots support to label genetically engineered food by introducing their bipartisan legislation today. Without consumers' knowledge or consent, GE foods have pervaded our food supply despite never being studied for their long-term health and environmental impact. Strong, uncompromising federal legislation will help restore consumers' right to decide for themselves whether or not to purchase and feed GE food to their families.

"There is no doubt that the successful citizen-led campaigns to advance state legislation across the country in the past months have played an integral role in the introduction of this federal legislation. Food & Water Watch believes that both state and federal legislation is important ensure that consumers have the right to make informed choices about the food they buy. We will continue to work with our allies on the state and federal level to give all Americans the right to know what's in their food."

Food & Water Watch works to ensure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainable. So we can all enjoy and trust in what we eat and drink, we help people take charge of where their food comes from, keep clean, affordable, public tap water flowing freely to our homes, protect the environmental quality of oceans, force government to do its job protecting citizens, and educate about the importance of keeping shared resources under public control.

Food & Water Watch mobilizes regular people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water, and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people's health, communities, and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.
