Protests Fill Tahrir Square, Again
It’s midnight Monday in the Middle East. The streets of Cairo are hopping. Egyptians are angry with the lack of change and the heavy handiness of the Egyptian military and police. I just arrived in Gaza after being in Cairo yesterday.
People Calm until Police Arrived at Tahrir Square
Last night after I finally got out of the Cairo airport after 5 hours of being detained upon my arrival, at least 32 had already been killed by the military around Tahrir Square with hundreds wounded. Tonight more have died as the police fired on protesters.
Detained at Cairo Airport as a Security Risk
I was trying to transit Egypt to go to Gaza with a delegation of Arab, Asian, European and Latin American parliamentarians. Egyptian immigration authorities told me that I was on a “security risk list” and they needed the approval of the US government before letting me in!!
Tahrir Square Calm until Police Arrived Firing Tear Gas and Bullets
An Egyptian protester holds a 'Made in USA' gas canister during attacks by Egyptian riot police in Cairo, Egypt, Monday, Nov. 21, 2011. (AP photo)One member of our delegation who went to Tahrir Square late Sunday afternoon, said that the people on the square were peaceful, when riot police suddenly arrived and went on a rampage, tearing up tents, burning motorcycles, firing tear gas and shooting people. Then almost as suddenly as they appeared, the police disappeared and the Square filled again with citizens. Throughout the night, the people peacefully occupied the square.
More wounded and killed on Monday around Tahrir
As we drove this morning (Monday) from Cairo to the Gaza border, police had reentered Tahrir Square and the streets surrounding it, and hundreds more had been hurt and several had been killed.
Two police allegedly killed in the Sinai by Bedouins-big military and police presence
The drive from Cairo to Gaza City took almost 12 hours. Because two police were killed reported by Bedouins in the Sinai yesterday, the drive across the Sinai to Rafah border crossing today was filled with more checkpoints than normal and a large number of Army tanks positioned at every major intersection.
Egypt’s Interim Cabinet Resigns
Tonight, local TV overage and social media sites have shown gratuitous, vicious police violence toward civilians. Television news programs are reporting that police and military have used a huge amount of American made tear gas on the protesters, tear gas that was provided to the Egyptian government after the January protests that resulted in President Mubarak’s resignation.
Tonight Egypt’s interim cabinet resigned and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces asked the Ministry of Justice to conduct an investigation of the violence.
Call on Obama to Plea that Police and Military not hurt or kill Protesters
At this point, President Obama has not made a statement on the latest protests in Egypt. He and his administration were very slow to acknowledge that the youth of Egypt in the protests at Tahrir Square were changing the political landscape of the Middle East and the World.
With American tear-gas used on protesters in the United States and in Egypt as they challenge their governments, Obama should quickly and strongly suggest that Egyptian (and American) police stop beating up and killing protesters!

Show AllI am so encouraged to know that our maufacturing and export trade is doing so well! Who knew? Cluster bombs and tear gas, clearly the economy will soon improve as more regimes world wide follow our lead and supress dissent using modern agressive crowd control techniques. What an absolute travesty this is, our government somewhat unenthusiastically supports the Egyptian 99% while at the same time sells their oppressors tear gas. Why am I not at all surprised? Ann I admire you greatly, but petitioning the representatives selected by the multinationals and MIC will do aboslutely NOTHING, they really do NOT CARE! They are bought and paid for by the manufacturers of the very devices which we find so abhorrant. Obama and congress should be standing with the OWS people, the CA congressional delegation should be descending en mass to evict the Chancellor of the University in question, encouraging and supporting the students and getting arrested. Swearing to uphold the Constitution MEANS supporting peaceful assembly and free speech, the congress is doing neither.
What is this "Obama Should" crap?
If anything, Obama will very likely see this as another reason to sell more weapons.
Obama is Bush doing a song and dance while the same people are running the show.
Yeah, I doubt that Wright really expects Obama to do what he "should", but just feels that she needs to put it out there anyway.
It's a subjective judgement call, but I don't think Wright is one of those smarmy or fatuous "more in sorrow than anger" Obama critics who truly believe, or feel compelled to act as though they truly believe, that somewhere beneath that cold Teflon shell, Obama has a redeeming soul or conscience that may yet be touched.
Funny you should mention Bush, though.
When I got to the "should" paragraph, it prompted a Michael Moore-style flash-cut montage in my head: shots of protesters being tear-gassed in Tahrir Square, pepper-sprayed by goon cops in California-- and winding up with Obama and a few choice 1%er cronies on a golf course, with Obama crowing, "Now watch this drive!"
I had the Honor of Meeting Col. Anne Wright Oct. 5th at Busboys in D.C. I thanked her for all that she does. When you look at her schedule It's amazing how she holds up. Sometimes it's months before she sees her home and only for a short time and she is off again. I told her Im like Winston Smith at my place of employment with the Police and she gave me a hug.
Ms. Wright,
Great article; but, we need to concentrate our efforts on getting politics, money, and religion out of our governing system in the United States. The need for true democracy has never been greater in American than now - THE FUTURE IS NOW!
We now have a great opportunity to break up this two party dictatorship and truly reform and change our system of government.
Reminder:
George Washington warned against entangling foreign alliances and the formation of political parties - he was the only president elected as an independent, as he was not formally affiliated with any party during his two terms.
