Sunrise on TX-28: Dems are Willingly Outcasting Young and Working People

WASHINGTON

Today, following the results of the TX-28 congressional race, where the Democratic establishment let an anti-choice Democrat win the nomination, Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement, released the following statement:

"In a year of mass disillusionment, young people in TX-28 and across the country poured their heart and soul into Jessica's race. And what did the Democratic Party do? They supported an anti-abortion, anti-labor, NRA "A" rated, oil "Democrat," while 40 years of reproductive freedom was being ripped away, children are being murdered, and Republicans are poised to win in 2022.

"It is shameful that the Democratic Party stood back while Super PACS spewed lies about Jessica and poured millions of dollars into a Dem seat in a year when extremist Republicans are outspending Democrats across the country. Pelosi recorded robocalls for an anti-choice candidate while her own supporters shook with fear over the loss of Roe v. Wade. And after another horrific mass shooting, they stood by Cuellar, one of the only Democrats with an "A" rating from the NRA. To support a candidate that is so fundamentally misaligned with the party's values is a failure of Democratic leadership. They used their money to shut down progress in a critical state, while people organized for Jessica.

"The Democratic Party is actively outcasting young people and working class people from the party, and they have a choice to make: they can make changes to be the party of the people, or they will lose."

Sunrise Movement first endorsed Cisneros in 2020, and came back to endorse her earlier and begin volunteer efforts even sooner this cycle. In total, Sunrise exceeded over 1 million contacts to voters in TX-28, including over 700,000 calls to primary voters - that is more than 3x the amount of calls Sunrise made in the historic Ed Markey election in 2020. Full memo of Sunrise's impact is here.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
