Bend the Arc: Trump's SCOTUS Pick 'Irreparably Tainted' by GOP's Hypocrisy

Senate Democrats must to do everything in their power to block any attempt to fill vacancy until a new government is sworn in

WASHINGTON

Bend the Arc: Jewish Action released the following statement in response to President Trump's decision to nominate Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

"Even if you ignore Amy Coney Barrett's abysmal record, this nomination would already be irreparably tainted solely because of the naked hypocrisy of President Trump and Republican Senators who are trying to stack the courts and undermine the election in order to hold onto power they can't win at the ballot box," said Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc: Jewish Action.

"The Republican Senate 'majority' rushing to confirm Barrett actually represents a minority of Americans. If they succeed, it would mean five of the nine Supreme Court seats were filled by presidents who lost the popular vote. We reject Trump and the GOP's deeply cynical attempt to fill the courts with hyper-partisan judges to rubber-stamp their agenda of division and fear."

"The security of the rights of millions of women, immigrants, and people of color depend on a Supreme Court that truly guarantees equal justice under law, not one that is so easily manipulated by deeply cynical politicians. Senate Democrats must do everything in their power to block any attempt to fill this seat until a new government chosen by the people can be sworn in next year."

Bend the Arc: Jewish Action took an active role in opposing Trump's previous Supreme Court nominations, and will continue to oppose Barrett's nomination until a new government is sworn in. So far, over 3,500 Bend the Arc members have signed our pledge to oppose Trump and the GOP's attempt to undermine the Supreme Court's legitimacy and Justice Ginsburg's legacy of fighting for equality and dignity for all.

During the Neil Gorsuch confirmation process, Bend the Arc leaders across the country hosted 15 phone banks in one week in New York, Illinois, California, Maryland, D.C., Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Utah, reaching over 1,500 voters.

During the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation process, Bend the Arc worked as part of a broad coalition including making the Jewish case against Kavanaugh, joining actions in the Hart Senate Building, and supporting activists from Alaska who successfully lobbied Sen. Lisa Murkowski to oppose his confirmation. In the final days before the vote, leaders from our Pittsburgh Moral Minyan drove to Washington to confront senators and to march on the Capitol and Supreme Court.

Bend the Arc is where progressive American Jews join together to fight for justice and equality for all. We are the only national Jewish organization focused exclusively on progressive social change in the United States.
