This Spring, Let Us Commit Ourselves to Life
Both Passover and Easter “celebrate” truly horrendous acts committed by men against men.
Passover commemorates how the Jews were spared by the grace of God from the Pharaoh’s evil plan to kill all first-born sons. Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Christ after he was brutally martyred on the cross—a not-uncommon practice at the time.
Of course, both the Christian and the Jewish holidays also build on the much earlier pagan rites of Spring, the welcoming of warmth and rebirth after a season of winter.
I have to wonder why dominant human civilization has moved away from the earlier, simpler pagan celebrations, keyed to the natural world rather than to human doings and misdeeds.
Both Passover and Easter celebrate life—the lives of Jewish children, the miraculous resurrection of Christ, who gave his life in sacrifice for humanity. Hence all the eggs, chicks and bunnies that populate the secular reinterpretations of these holidays, especially the American secular Easter.
Life is indeed something to be celebrated, as the Jewish cheer “L’Chaim!” proclaims.
Celebrated and protected.
As we move forward into the 21st century, into the auspicious year of 2012, let our aim be to reconnect with our prehistoric roots, to the simpler ages when we instinctively celebrated the return of the Light, the annual swing of our planet back towards the Sun.
For much too long, we have allowed religious politics to push us into conflicts and cruelties that do not serve the purpose of Life. In claiming to worship the Divine, we actually find ourselves serving the dark side, the side of Death and Destruction.
I use these capital letters advisedly, to emphasize the symbolism inherent in all these word-concepts.
Beyond the symbolic realm there is the literal bedrock of reality. We are hitting up against that reality now, as the patterns of power-hungry conflict, fueled by greed and a willingness to press on with destruction of the living world no matter the cost to systemic ecological health, play out with relentless precision.
This Easter and Passover season, let us do more than just toast to life. Let us commit ourselves to the service of the divine spark animating our planet, which circulates without distinction through every blade of grass, every insect, and every human being.
It is only in our positive reciprocal commitment to Life that we can consider ourselves truly blessed.

Show AllIt's a relief to find this a genuine affirmation, not a shilling for the routine business of death masked as a fraudulent "99% Spring." Bless you, sister; may love Occupy your life.
Let's not go backwards. Let's move forwards. From now on Easter should be celebrated by a Bunny With A Gun. Here's some real news.

If human beings manage to stand up and declare that we WILL NOT allow this beautiful dying planet to be destroyed then we will have done something to redeem ourselves from our history.
Meanwhile the nuclear contamination spewed forth from Japan 24 hours a day.

Life is good. What an experience! It's always best to forgive.
We need an international Manhattan Project at Fukushima to figure out what to do with all the thousands of hot rods. Since I read this I have been absolutely sick:

This and thousands of beautiful dolphins dying in Louisiana due to oil corporations using sonar....
I'm getting of tired of being broken-hearted and crying.
It's as if the leadership of the world either doesn't understand what they are doing or just don't care. Either option is frightening beyond belief.
Very good story! All the best to you! May the black God in Heaven bless us all as we treck on toward a better world. For atheists, may Mother Nature bless us all in this struggle.
We're all here because of the resources Mother Nature provides us with.
"I have to wonder why dominant human civilization has moved away from the earlier, simpler pagan celebrations, keyed to the natural world rather than to human doings and misdeeds."
It's because we are all sitting in a dark corner staring at a computer screen, instead of being out in the bright sunshine.
I for one spent the day with my daughter out in the hills, helping her with her garden, gathering 8 dozen eggs! sharing the mountain with 4 ft. tall wild turkeys that roamed by in small herds thru out the day, a deer resting in the grass. now I'm back home hunkering in my aqua mellow room with my dog and my cat chatting with you all. I guess i'm still a pagan :)
Wow, your turkeys are a lot bigger than ours. I'd say our biggest ones are probably about three foot, even with tails displayed. And they are doing a lot of this recently. I too will be a pagan till the end of my days.
Very disturbing news from Fukushima:
"Based on U.S. Energy Department data, assuming a total of 11,138 spent fuel assemblies are being stored at the Dai-Ichi site, nearly all [of] which is in pools. They contain roughly 336 million curies (~1.2 E+19 Bq) of long-lived radioactivity. [...] roughly 85 times the amount of Cs-137 released at the Chernobyl accident as estimated by the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP)."
"Many of our readers might find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of the figure, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy the world environment and our civilization."
Quoted from "The Largest Short-Term Threat to Humanity: The Fuel Pools of Fukushima," by George Washington on 04/07/2012 02:19 -0400, at http://www.zerohedge.com/blog/7813.
Isn't your posting handle the same as that college that the guy went wack and shot a bunch of people in Oakland? Is there a connection?
Oikos is Greek for Ecos, it's been around for millenia. Oikos the poster has been around for years. So no, no connection.
Sobering !
How truly bizarre...
Passover and Easter celebrate the SALVATION from "truly horrendous acts committed by men against men." [trying to ignore the sexist choice of nouns], not the horrendous acts themselves.
As the author propounds, "For much too long, we have allowed religious politics to push us into conflicts and cruelties that do not serve the purpose of Life. In claiming to worship the Divine, we actually find ourselves serving the dark side, the side of Death and Destruction." She conflates all worship with that of worshiping the truly Divine. There is Evil in this world, and there are those that worship it; often Evil is disguised as Good, trapping the unwitting or careless. It is Evil that pushes Humans into conflict and cruelties, not the worship of that which is Good.
If Browdy wishes to argue for atheism, then let her do so openly and reasonably. Setting false premises and then arguing against the false conclusions is both dishonest and weak-minded.
"If Browdy wishes to argue for atheism, then let her do so openly and reasonably." Why do you christians think that everyone who doesn't subscribe to an abrahamic religion is an atheist? Atheist is really just a term created by you folks so you can pretend that mere pagans aren't connected to the divine. And if you don't agree that "For much too long, we have allowed religious politics to push us into conflicts and cruelties that do not serve the purpose of Life. In claiming to worship the Divine, we actually find ourselves serving the dark side..." you haven't faced history, including and up to today. atheist: a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings." Supreme Being. hmmm. what does he look like? He's a dude right? The divine has to be a supreme being? and most likely it's a guy, el patron? All those "major" world religions have some great teachings, lots of wisdom, lots of folks who connected with the divine and shared their experience as teachers and writers, as do other traditions around the world, and as does our own experiences, and as does nature. Some of us see it as a great oneness, sorry that isn't supreme enough for ya.
"...the dark side of Death and Destruction" I find this vague comment to be .....well, too vague. Death and rebirth are both inevitable aspects of the laws of this natural world. Calling them the dark side is interesting to say the least.
"I use these capital letters advisedly, to emphasize the symbolism inherent in all these word-concepts." I betcha she gets that death is part of life, she sounds like a wise woman.
"For much too long, we have allowed religious politics to push us into conflicts and cruelties that do not serve the purpose of Life. In claiming to worship the Divine, we actually find ourselves serving the dark side, the side of Death and Destruction."
In context she is creating a good and bad reality. Divine=good. Dark=bad/ Death and Destruction bad, Divine good. She does not get it and not only that she is promoting a kind of mentality that is the problem imho.
"Let us commit ourselves to the service of the divine spark animating our planet, which circulates without distinction through every blade of grass, every insect, and every human being." Beautiful writing Ms. Browdy de Hernandez, and very much appreciated. I will be sharing your essay with friends and family this weekend. Blessings to you, and Happy Spring!
in albert camus' great play, state of siege, the hero, diego, defeats the plague, the totalitarian dictator, by coming to terms with death, and by eventually dying. if he did not accept hits death-sacrifice, the plague would have won,..diego and victoria would have died anyways, and the plague would have remained in control of the city, a control empowered by the power of death, of killing . paradoxically, it is by facing death and torture, for instance, as is tim dechristopher doing right now,... that we can bring about a return to life from the fascist dictatorship which is settling on ameri(k)ca.....!!homeland security has just purchased 450 MILLION hollow point bullets!!!.. hollow point bullets expand within the body, destroying tissue and assuring death. they are banned in war by international agreement, where they are known as dum-dum bullets..they are not meant for target practice or training, they are meant to kill...who is homeland security planning to kill in this horrible way?...us...
Toltstoy Resurrection 1899
Though hundreds of thousands had done their very best to disfigure the small piece of land on which they were crowded together, by paving the ground with stones, scraping away every vestige of vegetation, cutting down the trees, turning away birds and beasts, and filling the air with the smoke of naphtha and coal, still spring was spring, even in the town.
The sun shone warm, the air was balmy; everywhere, where it did not get scraped away, the grass revived and sprang up between the paving-stones as well as on the narrow strips of lawn on the boulevards. The birches, the poplars, and the wild cherry unfolded their gummy and fragrant leaves, the limes were expanding their opening buds; crows, sparrows, and pigeons, filled with the joy of spring, were getting their nests ready; the flies were buzzing along the walls, warmed by the sunshine. All were glad, the plants, the birds, the insects, and the children. But men, grown-up men and women, did not leave off cheating and tormenting themselves and each other. It was not this spring morning men thought sacred and worthy of consideration not the beauty of God`s world, given for a joy to all creatures, this beauty which inclines the heart to peace, to harmony, and to love, but only their own devices for enslaving one another.
This is one Blog I cannot agree with more. These constant Wars need to stop and Freedom and Life celebrated.
I always find it puzzling how christians combine bunnies and crucifixion. But then the Jewish passover stories and bitter herbs aren't much more cheerful.
For me it is a time to celebrate spring. A time to glory in little green sprouts, beautiful flowers, singing birds, the variety of furry creatures, blue skies, warm short rains and a reawaking and reemergence of life.
Happy, happy, joyous spring everyone. Peace be with us all.
