Happy Birthday America: How Exceptional Are You?
Today, as we celebrate the birth of our nation as the world's beacon of freedom and democracy, we might also ponder the insights from a book by Godfrey Hodgson, The Myth of American Exceptionalism. Exceptionalism is an especially pertinent topic for us during this insecure period of empire, war and economic decline.
Hodgson grew up in Great Britain and became a great admirer of Americans because of what we did during World War II. He studied in Philadelphia and served as a correspondent for the London Observer in Washington, D.C. He covered the Civil Rights Movement and made films about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ronald Reagan. He taught at Harvard and Berkeley and has visited all but two states. He prides himself in spending most of his life in trying to understand the history and politics of the United States and he provides an interesting "outsider's" viewpoint.
American exceptionalism, says Hodgson, is rooted in religion where colonialists saw themselves as "a chosen people" destined to "fulfill a unique historical destiny." This ideology surfaces from time to time, especially when the nation is in crisis. Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt and George W. Bush all used it because it resonates well with the public and reasserts our identity. President Obama is now using it by "appealing to our better natures," as Lincoln would call it.
Our schools have trained us well in exceptionalism, he says, however, what they often miss is the context of international historic processes at work. For example, the American Revolution borrowed its ideas about liberty and freedom from Europeans who had been developing them since the seventeenth century British Revolution and the eighteenth century Enlightenment.
European political rivalries and struggles also influenced America's development because they brought dispossessed immigrants to our shores. We were exceptional in that we offered the immigrants land they couldn't get in Europe. However, these lands became available through our expulsion of the indigenous tribes who once lived on them. In this way we were not exceptional to the Europeans who built their colonial empires in the same way.
Hodgson continues that westward movement, made possible mostly by the transcontinental railroads, was financed by Europeans who also invested in our manufacturing, provided us with intellectual property, and supplied us with cheap European labor-through immigration.
The twentieth century reinforced America's exceptionalist belief when we acted as "an international knight errant, riding to the rescue of the victims of oppression and injustice." Much of this ideology came from Wilson but FDR tapped it, too, and it inspired us to win two world wars. A good thing, says Hodgson.
The post-war 1950s began a new era of American exceptionalist thought and brought more good. Our victory in war bred a new prosperity, wider participation in politics, greater rights for women and minorities, belief in educational opportunity, mobility in geography and economics and concern for the welfare of others. But it also produced a dark side where we feared vulnerability with the Soviet Union. However, our Cold War textbooks taught us a "new militant sense of exceptionalism" with a re-worked religious belief that "the United States had been entrusted by God with a mission of bringing light to a darling world."
This story continues into the mid-1970s until something happens to make America seem less exceptional, he says. International institutions the United States had created, like the United Nations, became unpopular with many Americans. Then the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 fomented a hubris where we seemed to reject "long-cherished principles."
For example, America switched from being exceedingly liberal (the legacy of FDR) to being exceedingly conservative (the legacy of Reagan), which made us drastically exceptional from the rest of the world in terms of:
- imprisoning greater numbers of people
- providing less access to health care
- sustaining a growing inequality in distribution of income and wealth
- disconnecting the campaign from the deeds done in politics
- rejecting assumptions about global warming, international law and respect for international organizations
- supporting a standing army of invincible force and superiority.
The rate of child poverty is 21.9 percent, the highest among the 17 OECD countries, makes the United States exceptional, says Hodgson, in that we are unwilling "to pay to take children out of poverty."
Additionally, our political system has become more focused on funding and winning elections than on encouraging voter participation. Politicians seek money from business and lobbyists to finance the cost of TV advertising, which is aimed at wealthier people who do vote their best interests, he says. It's no wonder unions, citizens groups, consumers and minorities have been left out!
Even the Constitution has been abused in part "as a result of the unrestrained ferocity of political conflict" between the polarized conservatives and liberals-who differ very little except in their party affiliations.
A spiking stock market in the 1990s created a "mood of economic triumphalism and a belief in a ‘New Economy' that broke all the rules," says Hodgson. Americans changed from being an people of idealism and generosity to a people who were "harder, more hubristic." Most Americans truly believed that everyone was experiencing a rise in living standards-that is until the bubble burst in 2000 and again in the fall of 2008. Only then did it become obvious that the country had in fact become a debtor nation where only the very rich profited.
Since 1989 America has evinced a new attitude as "the lone superpower" with its 700+ military bases and a supremacy of force. Consequently, Americans were the last ones to believe that anyone could challenge them, says Hodgson, until 19 hijackers armed with box cutters poked through our vulnerability.
And that is yet another thing. Americans perceive 9/11 as an instance where we were exceptionally hated and then forget that terrorist attacks were carried out in Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Tanzania, Bali, Madrid, Casablanca, Istanbul and London.
Hodgson concludes that the United States as it is today is not exceptionally bad but that it is no longer exceptional. Instead, America is just "one great, but imperfect, country among many others."
Hodgson has taken great pains not to minimize America's achievements but rather to offer analysis about how our exceptionalism has influenced false perceptions of ourselves and a skewing of some of our policies.
Actually, this book may serve as a sounding board for our national consciousness during this time of crisis. Then, what we do as a nation is really up to us. And that will be the measure of our exceptionalism.

Show AllAs a trained history teacher, I like this article. Or rather, I like the book she mentions since this article is really just a book review. The only problem I have is that both authors cling to that silly notion that 19 Arab hijackers (7 of which have been proven to be still alive) are the real perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks.
Still, I will certainly add this book to my list of reading material. Sounds interesting.
"7 of which have been proven to be still alive"

Well, CYNICAL beat me to the punch (thank you - I was out for most of the day), but here is some more:
The FBI named all nineteen "hijackers" within the first day or two. Of those nineteen, from AA Flight 11, Waleed Alshehri, Wail Alshehri, and Abdulaziz Alomari are all still alive. From UA Flight 175, Mohand Alshehri is still alive. From AA Flight 77, Salem Alhazmi is still alive. From UA Flight 93, Saeed Alghamdi and Ahmed Alnami are both still alive.
The September 20, 2001 London Times wrote a story about the so-called hijackers who came forward to say they are alive and well. One of the alleged hijackers even did an interview with the London-based, Arab-language daily, Al-Quds al-Arabi, in exasperation over why his face was all over the world. The September 23, 2001 edition of the BBC News also ran a story noting the amazing life-affirming biological conditions of some of the hijackers, though they only mention four of them at the time. The September 21 edition of The Guardian also ran a story about this. German and Indian papers also covered the story. Even CNN and the Chicago Tribune made a small mention of this, although the online links to these two stories are no longer in service. All these stories are cited in the first three books on this subject by Professor David Ray Griffin, which I HIGHLY recommend you read. The stories appeared and then quickly disappeared without further mention.
Furthermore, according to the official airplane passenger lists (released by CNN and others), none of those nineteen men mentioned were anywhere on those planes.
Seventhson July 5th, 2009 8:40 pm...He seems to have run away, so I believe the facts scared him. Anyway, if you have not checked out israelshamir.net (scroll down to collateral damage articles Part I and II), please do...it's a long read, but you will not be disappointed as to one of the VERY plausible reasons (there are many)..behind 9/11...extremely well documented....Most minds are pretty well blown when they take the time to read this remarkable piece that took six years to research.
Yes, thank you. I have actually read bits of that, though admittedly not the whole thing yet. Someone else on this site had posted it a couple times (I think it was CURMUDGEON).
Additionally . . .
Everybody “knows” Osama bin-Laden was the mastermind behind 9/11. Right? Well . . . not so fast. Right after 9/11, Colin Powell promised, after being asked, to produce a “white paper” containing proof that bin Laden was behind 9/11. As of this very day of me writing this post, that paper has yet to be produced. British PM Tony Blair’s government DID provide such a white paper, entitled “Responsibility for the Terrorist Atrocities in the United States” but by its own admission, it “does not purport to provide a prosecutable case against Usama bin Laden in a court of law.” Osama bin Laden has never admitted to planning 9/11 except in one grainy video that is so obviously a fake to be laughable. For the most damning evidence, however, I would direct you to the FBI’s very own website, www.fbi.gov. The FBI was the biggest contributor of evidence to the official 9/11 Commission Report. On their Most Wanted page for bin Laden, the FBI says he is wanted for the bombings of the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, but NOWHERE on that page does it mention the attacks of 9/11. Puzzling, no? When asked about this, FBI chief of investigative publicity Rex Tomb publicly said “The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Usama bin Laden’s Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting bin Laden to 9/11”. Other FBI officials have also admitted this.
This is all also cited in Professor Griffin's books. Please read them - the first three in particular.
>>Vice President Joe Biden seemed to give Israel a green light for military action to eliminate Iran's nuclear threat, saying the U.S. "cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do."
See? No longer exceptional. The US can not tell other countries what they can do and not do....Right?

>> Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, in her first full day on a weeklong tour of Asia, warned North Korea on Tuesday not to undertake a test of a long-range missile, as it has threatened.
Oops my bad. It looks like they have a very confused foreign policy.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/17/washington/17diplo.html
I agree...The U.S. is hardly "exceptional." America is a war mongering nation which promotes the militarist-corporatist-police state. The U.S. like Israel has adopted a program of martial law with the Homeland Security Department and the Patriot Act. There has certainly been an Israelization of American Foreign Policy as the issue of Iran demonstrates so clearly. The Zionists have hijacked American Foreign and Domestic Policy. Most of the surveillance technology used on American citizens is made and produced in Israel as well.
Vice President Joe Biden has just given the Green Light to World War III, and the idiot-spineless, so-called "liberals-progressives" think the Democratic Party are some fantastic alternative to the equally disgusting Republicans.
Anyone who thinks the Democratic Party is not dangerous is sleepwalking through history. Check out the Gore Vidal Interview with David Barsamian in the August, 2006 issue of the The Progressive magazine.
David Barsamian: Today the United States is fighting two wars, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, and is now threatening to launch a third one on Iran. What is it going to take to stop the Bush onslaught?
Vidal: Economic collapse. We are too deeply in debt. We can’t service the debt, or so my financial friends tell me, that’s paying the interest on the Treasury bonds, particularly to the foreign countries that have been financing us. I think the Chinese will say the hell with you and pull their money out of the United States. That’s the end of our wars.
David Barsamian: Talk about the role of the opposition party, the Democrats.
Vidal: It isn’t an opposition party. I have been saying for the last thousand years that the United States has only one party—the property party. It’s the party of big corporations, the party of money. It has two right wings; one is Democrat and the other is Republican.
http://www.progressive.org/mag_intv0806
And of course, the Democratic Party led by the Obama administration of Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton are "now threatening to launch a third one on Iran," and no longer is it just the Bush administration leading in this way.
Yes, President Obama is a BIG FAILURE and War Mongerer! He is enabled by Israeli Firsters, Zionist Rahm Emanuel, Crypto-Zionist Joe Biden and Crypto-Zionist Hillary Clinton. The Democratic Party led by the Obama administration of Rahm Emanuel, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton are "now threatening to launch a third one on Iran," and no longer is it just the Bush administration leading in this way.
Joe Biden declared himself to be a Zionist, nothing crypto about it.
"David Barsamian: Today the United States is fighting two wars, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, and is now threatening to launch a third one on Iran. What is it going to take to stop the Bush onslaught?"
Actually it's three wars. Let's not forget the attacks on and the fomenting of civil war in Pakistan, complete with a couple million internally displaced refugees.
"Vidal: Economic collapse. We are too deeply in debt. We can’t service the debt, or so my financial friends tell me, that’s paying the interest on the Treasury bonds, particularly to the foreign countries that have been financing us."
That "service" now runs to over $450 Billion Dollars a year. I wonder what single-payer Medicare For All would cost.
The Democratic Party are the new threat to this country. The Democratic Party are as hawkish as the Republicans. The Democrats have just given the Green Light for Israel to attack Iran as a proxy war for the U.S.
The Democratic Party is disgusting. Joe Biden is putrid and supports more war allowing Israel to attack Iran. Everyone knows that whether Israel attacks Iran, it is actually an American attack and that it is a proxy war fought on behalf of the U.S.

Biden: Israel ‘Entitled’ to Attack Iran
US Won't Stand in the Way of a Military Strike
by Jason Ditz, July 05, 2009
“In an interview today on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulus,” Vice President Joe Biden said it was up to the Israeli government to decide if Iran constituted an existential threat and that the nation was “entitled” to launch a military strike against the nation if they wanted to….Biden said the United States would make no effort to dissuade the Israeli government from launching an attack on Iran, but was deliberately evasive on the question of whether the US would provide Israel with access to Iraqi airspace for the strike, saying he didn’t want to “speculate.”…Israel has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran over the past several years, and the right-wing coalition government elected earlier this year won largely on a platform of taking an even more hawkish position toward Iran than previous administrations had….At issue is Iran’s civilian nuclear program, which despite a lack of evidence Israel claims is being used to construct a nuclear weapon in violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Israel is itself not a signatory of the NPT, and has a large, undeclared nuclear arsenal….US defense officials, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates, have warned that a military attack on Iran, whether by the US or Israel, would be blamed on the US and would create a “disastrous backlash.””
Uzi Mahnaimi and Sarah Baxter write in the Times from the UK in an article entitled: "Saudis give nod to Israeli raid on Iran" from July 5, 2009:
"The head of Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence service, has assured Benjamin Netanyahu, its prime minister, that Saudi Arabia would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites....Earlier this year Meir Dagan, Mossad’s director since 2002, held secret talks with Saudi officials to discuss the possibility....The Israeli press has already carried unconfirmed reports that high-ranking officials, including Ehud Olmert, the former prime minister, held meetings with Saudi colleagues. The reports were denied by Saudi officials....“The Saudis have tacitly agreed to the Israeli air force flying through their airspace on a mission which is supposed to be in the common interests of both Israel and Saudi Arabia,” a diplomatic source said last week....Although the countries have no formal diplomatic relations, an Israeli defence source confirmed that Mossad maintained “working relations” with the Saudis....John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations who recently visited the Gulf, said it was “entirely logical” for the Israelis to use Saudi airspace....Bolton, who has talked to several Arab leaders, added: “None of them would say anything about it publicly but they would certainly acquiesce in an overflight if the Israelis didn’t trumpet it as a big success.”"

WELCOME TO WORLD WAR III FOLKS!!!!
GET READY FOR WORLD WAR III FOLKS!!!! WORLD WAR III WILL BE HERE VERY SOON SO GET YOUR ASS READY BECAUSE YOU MAY FIGHT AND DIE IN IT!!!!
woodrow wilson was a horrible president
Olga, Olga, Olga,
OF COURSE White America is EXCEPTIONAL!!! While anyone could safely describe the last 6-8000 years as little more than imposed Feral Bestiality - White America holds a unique distinction: Faced with the greatest distribution of wealth among white males ever seen in human history, with the END of poverty FOREVER in this country in sight, with LIFETIME stable employment on the horizon - White America CHOSE Feral Bestiality as its preferred way of life - they DEMANDED Exclusion and demand Exclusion to this day...
You see, all we had to do to END poverty and provide LIFETIME stable employment was "Make an equal place for everyone at the table, reject war and the rights of conquest as the only force that gives our lives meaning, and let our (nearly) moribund Oligarachy die forever as a social class" - which was the intended outcome of the Roosevelt legacy taxation policies. That's why we taxed earned income over $6mn (adjusted from '35) at 91%, and mega-estates (Forbes, Gates, Walton, Rockefeller, Morgan et al) at 53%.
HOWEVER making an equal place, rejecting war, and letting the Oligarchy die meant giving up Authoritarian Patriarchy, White Male Supremacy, Gender Slavery, the RIGHTS of Conquest, and the "chance to be filthy rich and get our "E" Ticket punched with a dowry of 200 human slaves like Tommy Jefferson and rape 14yo girls with total impunity in between penning lines of the Declaration of Independence". We had "high hopes".
We were gonna be just like Master. We wanted "Everything" for ourselves, forever. We wanted Exclusion. We got it. And now you all be n****ers on this bus. Exceptional though they may be, White America had amnesia a most important historical artifact, "Master NEVER shares."
Peece.
I think right America saw and still sees the developments of the 60s and 70s as a warning in what an egalitarian America would look like: civil rights, womens rights, environmental rights, gay rights. The country, to them, was being overrun with avarice. So they cast their lot with the wealthy. And the wealthy took their tax cuts overseas, gutted American manufacturing, turned American real-estate into a Ponzi scheme, and put their fingers on the credit market jugular and squeezed until the government yielded tax money in the trillions. If the country turns left, these guys are well-positioned to leave the country, most of their new money is outside it anyway, and our massively-expensive military spends more time protecting their oil priorities than it does our borders. Sort of a wham-bam-thank ya mam, situation. And all because the American right forgot what really makes these guys tick, and it ain't 'moral values'.
Paragraph five above is an excellent example of what I often refer to as the "American Story", being told with the 'intended twist'----i.e. "we were bad, but we learned it from the Europeans, and besides, all of those 'indian tribes took the same land from other tribes'.......and it goes on even at the first grade level with the "Pilgrims being fed turkey by those 'indians there at Plymouth Rock', cause they was grateful to those Pilgrims"...........
The reality is that the majority of Americans are unaware that they actually establish a 'precedent' for history.
Their Constitution. That Document being a first, by itself establishes a 'precedent'.
The awareness proceeds to 'blindness' when most Americans are confronted wit the very real fact that Article 6 of the Constitution clearly states that 'all treaties are supreme law'.
Now, if one were to take into consideration the fact that more than 60% of the geographic territory of the USA was acquired NOT by the 'expulsion of the indigenous tribes' but by TREATY. These treaties were initiated by the US Gov, and ratified, and were broken with 'illegal legislation' which began in 1883----and continues to this day with USC Title 25.
So, the USA can claim that it established a "first" in human history in that it gave 'land to immigrants' that the USA did not have clear title to, did not own, and still have not been 'made to settle' for.
Now the USA has shown the entire world that they are capable of extreme good and very far the opposite. The have proved that they can do things that they condemn others for, by making the most outlandish excuses. They have proved to the world that they cannot keep their treaties, that they also have a 'penchant' for turning on their friends; rather quickly actually. And when they 'cal you enemy, they can and will go to illegal and even 'insane' lengths and proportions------ to destroy you.
Now if you are a 'freedom loving american' and you read this very short piece of history and ------it was that of 'another' nation----how fearful of 'that nation' would YOU be?
The world has grown to FEAR the USA.
One of the most common of all "human traits" is that "Humanity always hates what it fears"----and will most often destroy what it fears.
America, the world cannot possibly tolerate you much longer.
Good luck you really need it.
Our good Down Home folks like Sara Palin Love to watch telivision and get it on.
A book like this or even this excellent article will never make it to the MSM that the retardlicans watch or listen to.
And so the story goes on with nothing changing.
Zero
"Hodgson grew up in Great Britain and became a great admirer of Americans because of what we did during World War II." That explains much about the book as it is presented here. For an Englishman growing up in impoverished Britain, America must indeed have seemed to be the Promised Land. Therefore he lets America down gently, describing it as merely one great country among others. Had he grown up in France, which was much more heavily damaged by its American liberators than by its German conquerors, he would have had a more realistic view of America.
Hodgson blindly swallows America's self-image as "an international knight errant, riding to the rescue of the victims of oppression and injustice". The American people were in fact rather reluctant to mount that particular steed. In 1914 the great majority of Americans opposed entry into the Germano-Anglic War. In 1912 Wilson ran on the slogan "He kept us out of war", and proceeded to do an Obama. His excuse, you will recall, was the death of the human shields aboard the munitions carrier Lusitania. Likewise FDR's rhetoric against Germany -- you would never guess from his speeches in 1940 that America was technically at peace with Germany -- failed to move his domestic audience, and therefore he had to engineer a war with Japan in order to drag America back into the Germano-Anglic War. Hitler's speech to the Reichstag on December 10 1941 was not so much a declaration of war by Germany on America as a catalogue of the way in which America was already fighting an undeclared war on Germany.
Bonfiglio writes that America's Quixotic self-image "inspired us to win two world wars". America was certainly the principal beneficiary of the Germano-Anglic and Japano-American Wars. However, in both military phases of the Germano-Anglic War America was careful to let the Europeans and Russians do much of the fighting and dying. The Soviet Union was the target of 7/8 of Germany's military strength, but Roosevelt refused to send American soldiers to Stalin's aid. Roosevelt's evident determination to fight Germany to the last Russian doubtless coloured Stalin's attitude at Yalta. The Americans, of course, prefer to cast themselves as the Lone Ranger and relegate the Europeans and Russians to the role of Tonto.
These victories that America claims for itself were "A good thing, says Hodgson". He would, of course -- he has clearly absorbed the historiography of the winning side. But consider: If America had remained strictly neutral, allowing England and France to pay the price for their respective national obsessions, those two countries would have been stalemated and would have been forced to come to an honourable peace with Germany. Without the Versailles Diktat, the indispensable condition for Adolf Hitler's rise to power, much evil would never have occurred.
The account of the postwar period is positively amusing in its selectivity. America rises from the River Jordan and a voice proclaims, "This is my Chosen People, in whom I am well pleased." The only non-good thing about is the Cold War, which somehow just happened. (Morris Berman, in "Dark Ages America", tells the story of how the Cold War was brought about by Americans projecting their own imperial lusts onto the Soviet Union.) Then, in the mid 1970s, another mysterious event occurs, which is not even named. Writing about America's relations with the world in the 1970s without mentioning the destruction of the Bretton Woods system is like writing about San Francisco in the early 1900s without mentioning the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire.
"Then the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 fomented a hubris where we seemed to reject 'long-cherished principles.'" The subsequent summary of America's alleged fall from grace are a nice instance of what Ronald Wright, in "What is America?", calls America's endlessly self-renewing virginity. The domestic aspects are in fact merely a return to the full-bore class warfare and political corruption of the Gilded Age. In foreign relations, America openly resumed its practice of trampling on small, weak nations. The only true innovation is the maintenance of a large standing army.
A much better view of American exceptionalism is provided in Noam Chomsky's article "The Torture Memos", http://www.chomsky.info/articles/20090521.htm.
Angry Kraut July 5th, 2009 3:37 pm...You may bfind this an interesting, albeit it long, article about the Soviet collapse

Collateral_Damage_911.pdf
Angry Kraut: Small historical tidbit to add to Wilson and WWI. Two salient points: The fall of Tsar Nicolas and Russia's withdrawal from WWI in 1917 and the involvement of J Pierpont Morgan as the American purchasing agent for the Brits & French in the US from 1914 through 1916. As their agent he negotiated a loan of $1.5bn among 3200 domestic banks in 1916. You may do your own calculation of what those monies would be worth in today's $$ and just how much of our banking industry was comprised by those 3200 banks. Once Russia was out of the conflict 1,000,000 German soldiers were freed for the Western Front. Without America in the conflict that 1mn man army would have tipped the balance and our banks would never get their money back. Question: What politician owning industrialist didn't have a banker? Which politician owning newspaper chain didn't have a banker? What politician owning Wall Street animal didn't have a banker? Which of those bankers wasn't going to lose his ass if that loan went south? Could such men combine to take this country to war? Duh.
FYI: This factoid started for me as a throwaway line in Warren Beatty's "Reds" and was later confirmed through the worthy researchers working the Information Desk at Anaheim Main back '93. Pre-internet, those folks were "the bomb" when it came to getting quality information and data. Full cudos to them and any of their descendants who have survived to this late date.
Another excellent article from Chomsky . . . as one would expect. Thank you for posting it.
Good article and some great and insightful commentary here -- CD continues to be quite a treasure in that respect.
"army of invincible force"
Huh?
The US military is the world's most expensive and with the most firepower.
Invincible?
Yeah, in Grenada in 1982, against the construction workers.
"For example, the American Revolution borrowed its ideas about liberty and freedom from Europeans who had been developing them since the seventeenth century British Revolution and the eighteenth century Enlightenment."
and the 16th century Dutch Republic played no part?
Hendrik van Loon writes:
Delegates from the United Provinces, in congress assembled at The Hague on July 26, 1581, signed a document which is not very well known outside the confines of the Netherlands, but which in a way is even more significant than Magna Chart, for it recognized certain definite principles of government which twoo hundred years later were to be incorporated into the American Declaration of Independence.
Here are a few excerpts from this famous Act of Abjuration, which was at once translated into almost every European language and was distributed all over the Continent so that all the world might know that the people of the United Netherlands had not acted in a moment of unreasoning passion, but had most carefully weighed allthe pros and cons in this very serious case of "The People vs. Their Legitimate Sovereign."
The general principal underlying this solemn Act of Abjuration was summed up in the preamble:
"As everybody knows," it read, "a ruler has been called by God to rule over his subjects, even as a shepherd is called to take care of his flock, and, as has been held true from the beginning of time, a people does not exist for the benefit of its prince, but the prince exists to protect and cherish the interests of his people."
The man who probably had drawn up this challenging document was a certain Marninx van Sint Aldegonde, a Zeeland noble...
In this Act...(he) dug deep into ancient history, and by many eloquent examples he proved that ever since the beginning of time a people has had the right to rid itself of any tyranny which threatened to interfere with the natural rights of its free citizenry. Here was a new sound within the realm of practical politics or, rather, an almost forgotten sound, for even during the Middle Ages the peoples of Europe had always remained conscious of certain "natural and inalienable rights"...
Sint Alegonde's declaration of independence makes inspiring reading even after these many centuries, and I am sure that Thomas Jefferson, in his most eloquent moments, could not have done better. And I have always rather wondered how familiar Sam Adams of Boston was with this document when in 1743 he qualfied for his master's degree at Harvard with a thesis entitled: "Whether it be lawful to resist the Supreme Magistrate if the Commonwealth cannot otherwise be preserved." It also seems certain that Jefferson, as well as most of the other men connected with the American Declaration, had read it.
Why it is so little known in America today and is so rarely mentioned in our schoolbooks, which carefully stress Magna Charta, is somewhat of a mystery, but the Dutch Act of Abjuration...is well worth our attention as source material for the Declaration of Independence of almost two centuries later.
Sint Aldegonde, having delivered himself of a short historical review of events of the previous thirty years, thereupon, and in the most formal of terms, declared that, in the view of his many acts against the constitutional privileges of the different provinces, the King of Spain had now ipso jure forfeited his rights to the sovereignty over the people of the Netherlands and that therefore these subjects were now set free from their former oaths of allegiance.
vdb: 1: We're still back to the psychotic kiddie raper at Monticello, and while the boys may have grabbed a couple of pieces from Marninx to put some honey on the shit-cake---when our kiddie raping richfilth slaveholders wrote our Constitution, they mirrored the Roman Slave Republic before the Gracchi Bros. brought any reforms for the Plebs--our richfilth kiddie raping slaveholders wanted the Roman Slave Republic ruled by feral patrician clans with total impunity from the Plebs (the laws were written to resolve disputes between the feral animals, the Plebs had "no standing")-- and that's what they wanted. Reflect: If you and your brothers in sin own the politicians, the economic system, the courts, and the machinery of government, the plebs can dance with their Bill of Rights all they want, nobody's going to enforce it. Still it did give the Plebs a rosie glow...gott'em to fight and die, gott'em to bleed and kill and kill and kill and kill...didn't it...after all, our suburbs are built on mass graves and our freeways are paved with the bones of our victims, aren't they?
Now that White America is safe from ever living in a country based on Inclusion, now that the Roosevelt Legacy has been tortured, mutilated and raped to death, and all the leaders and mass movements for economic and social justice have been long since silenced, falsely imprisoned, or extra judicially executed, America can now return to hell on earth for the masses and 5 Star living with all mod cons for the kiddie rapers. These worthies will get the genetic treatments after they've been tested on your children to see if it kills or cripples or helps them - if it kills or cripples they leave the child alone but if it actually produces beneficial effect they kill the child, like terminating a lab rat and incinerating the body. Can't have smart healthy rats running around with evidence of genetic modification, can you? Somebody might seize the rat and copy the work...you know, Intellectual Property Rights.
That's the way this country was designed to operate. Just remember, the only way to keep discipline is to beat the slaves regular. Keeps'em in their place...and no, this is not "just another" economic downturn. No, no, no, no. This is Lockdown. End Game. 80-20 techno feudalism. Illiterate short-lived flat earth peasants with an infant mortality of 45% and shit on their hands (80% of population) ruled by a long lived insulated Feral Ruling Class (3%) supported by an indentured Overseer class (17%) who xfer all the wealth and degrade the Plebs into obedience and compliance. Master's Overseers got no gender and no race, just a job. We are their job...
Peece.
I didn't post the above to praise any genius Jefferson may have had or to argue his morals.(Although luckylefty may be pleased to add plagerism to old Tom's crimes.)
It was intended to counter Hodgson's British exceptionalist claim, and Bonfiglio's ready acceptance thereof.
Nor do I intend to hold the Dutch up as paragons of virtue and enlightenment; it were they who first gave alcohol to the native inhabitants of the continent known as N. America; and it was a Dutch captain who delivered the first load of black slaves to the mainland. This was two years prior to the Pilgrims being unceremoniously dumped at the Rock.
Slavery was not declared illegal by the Dutch until 1868, when they found that wage-slavery was cheaper, and more plentiful; a situation which persists today.
We must also not forget that above Dutch captain probably bought his cargo from Black Africans.
Today Holland hosts the ICC and their old oppressor, Spain, is the only country with enough cajones to go after the bush gang. (While at the same time keeping the Basque in subjugation - so it goes)
a closing word of friendly advice to luckylefty - don't take any nickels, wooden or otherwise; we all know whose image they bear.
America is of course exceptional and unique. All the BS from folks like Godfrey Hodgson and Olga Bonfiglio won't change that.
Its like children crying in the night to hear the arguments of this type of people trying desperately to convince themselves and others that reality is not real but something else.
"Hodgson has taken great pains not to minimize America's achievements"
Having read the book I'd say this is almost true. He did his best to restrain himself from using the usual cliches and silliness of the European left.
we are all exceptional and unique.
therein lies our equality.
unless you feel that "all men are created equal" only applies to you.
vdb: the guy who penned that "created equal" line was raping a helpless 14yo girl in the basement of Monticello on his writing breaks. Her screams drown his words as the screams of our victims have always drowned our pretty words. Judging by his behavior he obviously thought those words only applied to richfilth kiddie raping slaveholders like himself....oh yes, genocidal psychotics are always Exceptional...as long as it's not your 14yo some richfilth Tommy Jefferson is raping...
"the screams of our victims have always drowned our pretty words"
I'm glad you appear to realize that we are all capable of monstrous horror.
is that where our equality lies?
We need to transcend our monster nature, and we need to do it together.
Jefferson may have (in)famously penned the line, but he did not create the truth it expresses.
vdb: "...but he did not create the truth it expresses." Subtle, nuanced, and incontrovertibly true. "We need to transcend our monster nature, and we need to do it together." Agreed. Also not Rocket Science. End Authoritarian Patriarchy, Male Supremacy, Gender Slavery, Constant War, and Feral Oligarchy. Sum it up in 3 points 1) Make an equal starting place for everyone at the table, 2) Reject war as the force that gives our lives meaning, and 3) Kill the Oligarchy either with taxation or guillotines - both work. Regrettably, we do not seem any nearer to that effort now than we were 40 years ago...it's a lot like the Devil Card #XIII in the Rider Tarot. The chains around the necks of the man and woman are loose around the neck. All they have to do is lift them off, set them down and walk away...they don't seem able to do this in large numbers and they kill the ones who try to help them...(they left that part out of the Card)
Where humans have taken off those chains and made the transition to a different relationship with their lives, they live relatively well. Where people have clung tenaciously to a 6000 year old madness, their lives are hell on Earth. You may decide for yourself where you are living...
Peace.
"Make an equal starting place for everyone at the table"
a CHANCE they can believe in.
fuck chants and chains and "change".
PAX WILL BE
Henry8 July 5th, 2009 5:53 pm ............. Hard to argue with "exceptional and unique". BUT, also hard to argue with genocidal, corrupt, greedy, arrogant, war mongering, polluting and criminal, eh?
how about EXCEPTIONALLY genocidal, corrupt, greedy, arrogant, war mongering, polluting and criminal?
vdb July 5th, 2009 6:25 pm......Even better!
Exceptional nation...master race...chosen people. Gosh, I'm beginning to feel so ordinary because I'm not a member of any of the three.
We're #1 in Obesity! Whew Hoo!!!!! A little thing like a monster GWB created depression isn't going to slow us down too much.
Seriously, there are beautiful places in the US. The Grand Teton mountains stand out to me for one. The Colorado mountains in the Aspen area (Maroon Bells), aren't too shabby either.
I could do without the arrogance and military fixation though. We have what is probably the worst health care system in the developed world. Something has to be done to address that issue and Soon!
Happy post July 4 euphoria everyone!
"We have what is probably the worst health care system in the developed world."
I'm 59 years old, and family history suggests that, at best, I might have another 10-12 years. Right now I can afford my health care insurance, although it is far from a "cadillac" policy. My dental coverage is pathetic, for example. When I'm eventually, due to inflation, forced to choose between health care insurance and other living expenses such as property taxes, utilities and food I'll drop the insurance and I won't worry about it. When cancer strikes I'll purchase oxycontin on the street to alleviate the pain. When the pain becomes too great to bear I'll unlock the safe and pull out the .357 and take care of matters in short order. But my heart goes out to those much younger who are going to have to suffer this warmongering fascist police state much longer than me.
"When cancer strikes I'll purchase oxycontin on the street to alleviate the pain. When the pain becomes too great to bear I'll unlock the safe and pull out the .357 and take care of matters in short order."
AKA Obama's health care proposal.
Glad I'm not the only one stashing my personal 'insurance policy" in a locked box. I have no attention of feeding this monster when I'm too incapacitated or too indifferent to ride this nightmare out. Good for you. Once we can't work to survive anymore, and we're too old to go on a crime spree, there's not many other options left.
"•supporting a standing army of invincible force and superiority."
"Since 1989 America has evinced a new attitude as "the lone superpower" with its 700+ military bases and a supremacy of force."
This would be the trillion dollar a year military (including ongoing wars, occupations, civil wars started, etc.) that so far has been unable to pacify even one single city in Iraq. What an incredible bang for the buck, eh?
meh....what a question....that's easy, demstrated by America:
exceptionally:
warlike, violent, hubristic, selfish, greedy, narcissistic, overly-self regarding, presumptuous, xenophobic, authoritarian, prone to Orwellian acronyms and language corruption, disfunctional, socially militaristic, shallowly materialistic, exploitative, given to being enthused by physical cruelty, morally pretentious, ethically handicapped, intellectualy incurious, rapacious, untrustworthy, arrogant, triumphalist, quick to claim credit for everything under the sun, quicker even to blame others under the sun,
...and as Mahatma Gandhi once quipped, when some american reporters were trying to elicit from him glowing remarks about "what do you LIKE about america?":
"I do NOT like your Christians...they are most UNCHRISTLIKE"
of "christian" nations.......
for a nation that SUPPOSEDLY is founded upon "christ"......
The U.S. under Obama continues to erode and in a big way, too.
Obama and his gang ought to be impeached for continuing war crimes and assaults on the U.S. Constitution!!!!!!
And continuing with the Bush Doctine of pre-emptive war and secret detentions and not repudiating the Patriot Act!!!!
Obama like Bush is a law breaker of U.S. Law and International Law. Obama, Biden, Hillary Clinton, Rahm Emanuel, Eric Holder, and Leon Panetta are all war criminals and many more in that administration as well.
WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER ONE...ad nauseaum.
Who are we kidding? For all our dependence on foreign X imports from country Y, we're not all that exceptional as we try to think we are. We're just in denial mode ready to collapse any minute. Our nation died a long time ago but is now in dead nation walking trying to drag others into our misery when it's uncalled for.
JenniferBedingfield,
Obama and his gang ought to be impeached for continuing war crimes and assaults on the U.S. Constitution!!!!!! And continuing with the Bush Doctine of pre-emptive war and secret detentions and not repudiating the Patriot Act!!!!
Not to mention the constant war crime of threatening other nations with military force if they do not do X, Y or Z. Yes, those are commonly known as Hitler Laws in which a nation threatens another with the use of military force and death. Obama is GUILTY as Charged on this one as his minions like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden continually threaten Iran and so too has Obama done it as well.
These are war criminal actions by Obama and his administration. Thus, yes, Obama ought to be impeached for violating internatioal treaties enshrined into the U.S. Constitution, let alone his continued practice of torture and secret detentions around the globe.
"WE Americans have many fine qualities....seeing ourselves as OTHERS see us........is NOT one of these"..
Patrick Buchanan - conservative.
Mr. Obama raised concerns about the treatment of the businessman, Mikhail B. Khodorkovsky, who along with his partner has been put back on trial six years after they were first arrested. Critics say the new trial seems aimed at keeping Mr. Khodorkovsky, an opponent to the government who was once Russia’s richest man, in prison.
“Without knowing the details, it does seem odd to me that these new charges, which appear to be a repackaging of the old charges, should be surfacing now, years after these two individuals have been in prison and as they become eligible for parole,” Mr. Obama said in written answers to questions posed by a Russian opposition newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, over the weekend. “Nonetheless, I think it is improper for outsiders to interfere in the legal processes of Russia.”
But Mr. Obama called on President Dmitri A. Medvedev to follow through on his promise “to strengthen the rule of law in Russia, which of course includes making sure that all those accused of crimes have the right to a fair trial and that the courts are not used for political purposes.”
In a television interview that was broadcast in Russia on Saturday night, Mr. Obama did not repeat critical comments that he had made about Vladimir V. Putin, the former president and current prime minister, who is widely considered Russia’s dominant leader.
============
Take a good read at that excerpt from the New York Times report of Obama - visiting moscow - making remarks about "rule of law" in Russia....it's pretty clear obama has a sense of humor -- only it seems it also extends to COMICALLY ironic for being entirely CLUELESS about how OBVIOUSLY contradictory he and US policies and habits of pointing fingers are. it really makes one laugh so hard at the sheer GALL of it all.
he questions that Russia is putting on trial , again, a KNOWN oligarch, Khodorkovsky - NOT UNLIKE those in WALL STREET and once CHAMPIONED by WALL STREET and those that took advantage of Russia's chaos after the implosion of the USSR to Feed like the predators that they are -
while he OBVIOUSLY talks with a straight face in the face of HIS own PROTECTION of BUSH and USA administration war crimes that he won't Prosecute - NOR punish the actual THIEVES in wall street and the USA's OWN "masters of the universe" Criminals that ARE the cause of much of the world's economic debacles!...and HIS own continuance of trashing laws HE CLAIMS to uphold..such as those against torture, indefinite detention without FAIR PUBLIC TRIAL...because HE and the USA are trying tO HIDE EMBARRASSING truths about the USA's OWN much broader and longer trashing of JUSTICE itself.
IS THIS GUY FOR REAL? he is becoming more and more, like US policies and positions and posturings - like a BIZARRE comic strip .
He thinks he can FOOL the Russians with his "eloquence" intoning "THE USA and RUSSIA ARE EQUALS" like he has fooled Americans by patting them on the back for being SUCH "good citizens" - and at the same breath - talk out of his other side of the mouth trying to "isolate" PUTIN with his pre-visit talk about how Putin "has his feet in the past and cold war"
and thinking Medvedev or other russians - for all their differences internally - HAVE LONG MEMORIES of WHO REALLY STARTED and MAINTAINED the "cold war" right to THIS day with the USA's "NATO" PACKAGED surrounding of Russia -- that NO ONE mistakes for what it IS?
is obama THAT STUPID to think that he is "smart" and clever that russians are so unsophisticated he can BLIND them and/or IMPRESS them with DOUBLE TALK?
he is dreaming.
worse - the whole world is watching and considering how the USA has demonstrated its callous disregard for other cultures and their traditions and histories AND philosophies - and LIES about its actions and intentions with impunity - he GOES AHEAD and talks the talk AS if he is talking TO
the EASILY FOOLED AMERICANS back home!
HE is trying to LECTURE the RUssians and others about UPHOLDING LAWS ?
you can bet that if he WASN't a GUEST right now - Putin might have shot back a REALLY severe one-liner putting obama in HIS place under the spotlight with HIS own flouting of laws JUST LIKE george bush! that the whole world already KNOWS about.
i guess this is what Obama MEANS about "restoring american credibility?"
roflmao!
no, he came with a deal of billions in stimulus money to companies controlled by medvedev's main financial backer...they make some general agreements and both come out looking good, with o as now one of m's backers...nice
