Cancer – The Deadly Legacy of the Invasion of Iraq
Forget about oil, occupation, terrorism or even Al Qaeda. The real hazard for Iraqis these days is cancer. Cancer is spreading like wildfire in Iraq. Thousands of infants are being born with deformities. Doctors say they are struggling to cope with the rise of cancer and birth defects, especially in cities subjected to heavy American and British bombardment.
Here are a few examples. In Falluja, which was heavily bombarded by the US in 2004, as many as 25% of new- born infants have serious abnormalities, including congenital anomalies, brain tumors, and neural tube defects in the spinal cord.
The cancer rate in the province of Babil, south of Baghdad has risen from 500 diagnosed cases in 2004 to 9,082 in 2009 according to Al Jazeera English.
In Basra there were 1885 diagnosed cases of cancer in 2005. According to Dr. Jawad al Ali, director of the Oncology Center, the number increased to 2,302 in 2006 and 3,071 in 2007. Dr. Ali told Al Jazeera English that about 1,250-1,500 patients visit the Oncology Center every month now.
Not everyone is ready to draw a direct correlation between allied bombing of these areas and tumors, and the Pentagon has been skeptical of any attempts to link the two. But Iraqi doctors and some Western scholars say the massive quantities of depleted uranium used in U.S. and British bombs, and the sharp increase in cancer rates are not unconnected.
Dr Ahmad Hardan, who served as a special scientific adviser to the World Health Organization, the United Nations and the Iraqi Ministry of Health, says that there is scientific evidence linking depleted uranium to cancer and birth defects. He told Al Jazeera English, "Children with congenital anomalies are subjected to karyotyping and chromosomal studies with complete genetic back-grounding and clinical assessment. Family and obstetrical histories are taken too. These international studies have produced ample evidence to show that depleted uranium has disastrous consequences."
Iraqi doctors say cancer cases increased after both the 1991 war and the 2003 invasion. Abdulhaq Al-Ani, author of "Uranium in Iraq" told Al Jazeera English that the incubation period for depleted uranium is five to six years, which is consistent with the spike in cancer rates in 1996-1997 and 2008-2009.
There are also similar patterns of birth defects among Iraqi and Afghan infants who were also born in areas that were subjected to depleted uranium bombardment.
Dr. Daud Miraki, director of the Afghan Depleted Uranium and Recovery Fund, told Al Jazeera English he found evidence of the effect of depleted uranium in infants in eastern and south- eastern Afghanistan. "Many children are born with no eyes, no limbs, or tumors protruding from their mouths and eyes," said Dr. Miraki.
It's not just Iraqis and Afghans. Babies born to American soldiers deployed in Iraq during the 1991 war are also showing similar defects. In 2000, Iraqi biologist Huda saleh Mahadi pointed out that the hands of deformed American infants were directly linked to their shoulders, a deformity seen in Iraqi infants.
Many US soldiers are now referring to Gulf War Syndrome #2 and alleging they have developed cancer because of exposure to depleted uranium in Iraq.
But soldiers can end their exposure to depleted uranium when their service in Iraq ends. Iraqi civilians have nowhere else to go. The water, soil and air in large areas of Iraq, including Baghdad, are contaminated with depleted uranium that has a radioactive half-life of 4.5 billion years.
Dr. Doug Rokke, former director of the U.S. Army's Depleted Uranium Project during the first Gulf War, was in charge of a project of decontaminating American tanks. He told Al Jazeera English that "it took the U.S. Department of Defense in a multi-million dollar facility with trained physicists and engineers, three years to decontaminate the 24 tanks that I sent back to the U.S." And he added, "What can the average Iraqi do with thousands and thousands of trash and destroyed vehicles spread across the desert and other areas?"
According to Al Jazeera, the Pentagon used more than 300 tons of depleted uranium in 1991. In 2003, the United States used more than 1,000 tons.

There is no justification for this no matter how deep they dig into their moralistic bag of tricks.

Corporate America has discovered the perfect solution to the nuclear power plant depleted uranium fuel.

CETI: I was thinking the same thing. The toll of Agent Orange, Monsanto's current covert chemical war (on drugs) in Columbia, the Atom bombing of two highly populated cities in Japan, and now this. The carnage done on America's watch in direct contradiction to its boastfulness about spreading "freedom" and "democracy" makes it clearly the chief producer of (all those weapons!) terrorism, plus its most enthusiastic purveyor (of same). What a legacy to have to answer for!
I think the karmic boomerang IS already impacting the U.S. as its dreams of empire have left it bankrupt, its domestic infrastructure in various stages of dissolution, its schools increasingly a global joke, its "health"care system more like some form of amoral roulette (with fiscal extortion added to the mix), and its rates of cancer, depression, alcoholism, addiction, obesity, Diabetes, and violence OFF the charts...
No nation can hang its fame upon acts that not only massacre present populations, but leave a grotesque genetic legacy behind. No nation can make a claim to wealth based upon such senseless amoral carnage. The hubris that holds up these delusions is the next bubble that will burst.
Am I the only one who sees the insidious link between these ghastly actions and the fact that a majority of Americans see themselves as "religious?" A most stunning and surreal presentation of the 'religious' you question came last year at the beginning of the third game between the Detroit Redwings and Chicago Blackhawks. The Chicago fans have a tradition of clapping and cheering during the singing of the War Anthem...er, I mean National Anthem. The first two games were played in Detroit where some Chicago fans did their thing, upsetting many Detroiters. Not to take any trash talk from the Detroit fans, when the series moved to Chicago for that third game, the Chicago fans were in their finest "mystically religious" form...when the anthem came to "rockets red glare" I thought the whole arena was going to levitate and join Louis Farakhan's space ship friends.
It would be well worth it if one could find a recording of the event, as it shows the energy flow form we are trying to harmonize and bring out of insanity. It also shows, I believe, that the porno/sportsaholic flock are the main people that need to be approached (somehow?)** in order to achieve worldly peace. Of course these people will claim to be happily sexual, but their form of sexuality, depicted in fine fashion in one of the opening scenes to the Jerry Maguire movie, is more of a competitive (non-nurturing) contest falling under #4 above.
Well...gotta go, the BCS National Championship game is about to begin...(I know this all to well).
** The usual knee-jerk reaction by Activists in Detroit to the latest escalations in the rpms of the war machine is to protest at the McNamara Federal Building downtown, or march between the empty high rises chanting our self-righteous slogans to the drunken homeless people. To me our energy would be best served by pampleting (with info such as "DU"[deformed baby pictures works wonders, speaking of vegetative responses]) and making social contact during the local sporting events, especially when televised nationally; this would be a good strategy for all sports market cities.

I could argue that the People of the U.S. are not responsible, but many americans take the constitution seriously, and it begins with We the People, so we really can't shirk the responsibility just as the german people cannot shirk their responsibility for Nazism.
Please understand that my remarks were mostly an emotional expression of absolute moral outrage, rather than any kind of argument. Haven't the people of Fallujah suffered enought already - under the horrific US seige and white phosphorous bombardment - crimes against humanity and "collective punishment" equal to or exceeding anything any Nazi occupiers did??? And, even the most vile Nazi monsters didn't punish the yet to be born for countless generations to come!
Yet, under this filth called Obama, NO ONE will ever face justice for these supreme war-crimes. The man is a decieving, lying, war-pig, and he is, indeed, not even worth the blood that runs through his veins.
But yes, I think it is certainly arguable that, in a purported democracy, anyone who didn't vigorously protest - write letters, speak out to acquaintances and family, and go to gatherings - do indeed share collective culpability for the crimes of their government. And, like other crimes, ignorance is no excuse.
I say that we are too ingrained as a people with bigotry to turn this ship around. Go to Venezuela where at least you can die with a sword in your hand.

But the law only applies to the poor and the marginalized, especially people of color and females.
If accountability and justice ever reigned, our prisons would bulge with incarcerated governmental "leaders", politicians, and corporate CEO's.

Most of us have been sickened by the invasion of Iraq and had no idea such awful weapons were even being used. Our country is being controlled by the greedy and insane. President Obama has also angered many of us, but much of what he does is controlled by the secret government, the military-industrial complex and mass corporations. We have mass unemployement here because of them. This is eventually going to lead to a an uprising if something does not reverse the situation.

Actually, there are many very harmful chemical agents that outdo radioactive ones in being difficult to see, smell and detect, except through elaborate laboratory procedures. Many even have longer half-lives, such as the persistent hormone-like POP's that casue harm in absolutely tiny amounts. Radioactive materials can be easily detected in very tiny amounts with handheld instruments or simple procedures (haven't you done a radon-check of your home?), and their toxicology is much better known.
There is nothing mysterious about the harmful effects of DU dust (some of it water soluble) when inhlaed or ingested. It is a very low-level alpha emitter, but all it takes is a single alpha emission from an ingested source in the right tissues to cause mutations and cancer.
The harmfulness of DU munitions is not a case of "scientists not knowing what they are doing", rather it is a case deliberate lying and denial of the harm by the US military with generous help from that sycophantic propaganda syatem called the "news media". This is why DU contamination is such a horrible war crime.

Right, only crazed alarmists would draw a correlation between depleted uranium and cancer, birth defects, tumors, etc. Just a coincidence. The Pentagon, who would be skeptical of claims that they've ever killed ANYONE who wasn't a known or highly suspected terrorist, is only looking out for the interests and SAFETY of all Americans. And the only way we can be Absolutely Safe is when our military is free to kill anyone anywhere anytime, infect vast regions of the world with cancer-causing agents, and just basically spread Death to all who stand in the way of our God-given right to live in luxury while the world starves or dies for our benefit.

Created by DU explosions, uranium oxide is also escaping to the upper atmosphere, creating cancer clusters downwind (past Pakistan and into India). The spread of DU byproducts is also a global phenomena, as higher radioactivity was detected in Western Europe after the shock'n'awe campaign.
Countless millions will be killed, deformed and genetically altered by DU, many far from the battlefield. DU is nothing short of nuclear weaponry. Some scientists have actually said that DU is worse than using atomic weapons because the fallout on traditional nukes tends to drop to the ground. DU particles, on the other hand, are so tiny they float endlessly around until they lodge inside our bodies or on things we eat. They can't be washed or removed once in the lungs, body, or testicles, where they tend to wind up. I'd recommend all returning soldiers safely bury their fatigues as DU can persist there as well. Micronized zeolite may help treat DU poisoning.

DUH!!! Aren't we "legally bound" to the US Constitution and the first 10 Amendments?
Nope. The US Constitution is subject to legal interpretation. The specific clause in the international treaty is beyond any interpretation. Furthermore, those who use DU can be prosecuted as war criminals. Look at a recent trip to the UK which was aborted by Israelis who face prosecution for Cast Lead in Gaza. That action killed civilians and used White Phosphorus on a schoolyard.
Constitution is the highest law, yes, but the Right to Bear Arms (Second), let's say, isn't applicable in many cities which restrict firearm ownership (at least until the Supreme Court rules on it). Likewise during the 2008 campaign we had Free Speech Zones (violation of the First.) The broader rights enshrined in the Constitution may be violated, but lack the specifics of a statute.
The international treaty law is statutory, black and white, saying it is a crime to ____, in this case leave a persistent weapon. Therefore when it can be proved the US used such munitions, those who authorized it are subject to arrest and trial in international court. The US has opted out of any agreement which forces its troops to be subject to the Int'l Court of Justice, and has opted for bilateral Status of Forces agreements with host nations. (Look at the Iraqi lawsuit of Blackwater for more--Iraqi laws passed post-invasion--prevented the lawsuit from occurring in Iraq.)
"Legally bound" also means that our law includes/maintains the international law under the treaty, which isn't subject to reinterpretation, particularly when specific weapons are outlawed, like white phosphorous and DU (which isn't directly named but meets the rigid specifications of a "persistent" weapon.)
There is no way in this day and age that any person from the US government will ever be prosecuted for anything related to war crimes. It is a rigged game. And speaking of treaties - gee, ask the Native Americans what worth is there in any treaty signed by the US government.
The right to bear arms - written over 200 years ago, when the biggest gun was a cannon. I want a predator drone and a nuclear weapon - both 'arms'. Depleted uranium is an absolute misnomer.
DU is "depleted" only in the isotopes U-234 and U-235 which make up less than 1% of the total uranium.So DU has more then 99% U-238 in it, and also contains traces of PLUTONIUM, the deadliest radioactive substance on earth ...

TOQUEVILLE: Thank you for a most-excellent post. A few days ago I made the allegation that when DU went airborne at high speeds/temperatures traces of plutonium emerged and someone in the forum called me on that. I did not have the reference available. Perhaps that poster will note the data you reveal and stop comforting themselves on the deluded notion that the U.S. only uses weapons that the Geneva Conventions might approve of.
What sickens me is the knowledge of all the families that will be burdened with these broken children who may require assistance throughout their lives. I've often thought that the world would be a better place if more understood the law of karma, the likely return of souls to the journeys they began, the journey almost always left unfinished but for those that truly become one with the Light by living the logos of absolute selfless compassion.
