Thousands Join March to Protest Against Israeli Action
Protests against the Israeli offensive in Gaza became heated last night when up to 5,000 people gathered outside the country's London embassy.
A crowd dominated by young British Muslims cheered as Israeli flags were burned and some protesters hurled missiles, including a firework, at police.
Officers sealed off roads around Kensington High Street and armed themselves with riot shields as a small number of angry protesters tried to break down barriers protecting the building.
Older members of the crowd were seen trying to calm the atmosphere, which became increasingly charged as darkness fell and news of the ground invasion began to spread.
The group had broken away from a much larger demonstration earlier in the day when thousands marched through the streets of central London and gathered at a rally in Trafalgar Square.
Police said that 12,000 people had taken part in the protest, but the Stop The War Coalition, organisers of the demonstration, said the real figure was six times that at more than 60,000.
Organisers were preparing to make an official complaint to Scotland Yard after claiming that riot police charged into protesters.
Eyewitnesses claimed a number of people, including children, were thrown to the ground during a clash in an underpass at Hyde Park at the end of the demonstration.
Chris Nineham, an official of STWC who has organised dozens of national demonstrations, said: "I have never seen policing as irresponsible as this. People were being crushed inside that tunnel and they were being batoned. It was absolute pandemonium and people were falling over from the force of the police attacks.
"There were people trying to pull their children back and prevent them from being crushed. If anyone had fallen over then it would have been a very, very different story."
Stephen Hodgkins, 38, a community worker from Battersea, said people were petrified inside the tunnel. "We tried sitting down but that didn't seem to work. It was complete panic."
The mood had been more optimistic earlier in the day when speakers addressed the crowds in Trafalgar Square.
"Look at them, it warms my heart," said Tony Benn, president of the STWC, indicating the mass of demonstrators.
Earlier, protesters had thrown more than 1,000 pairs of shoes at the heavily-policed entrance to Downing Street in a mark of solidarity with the Iraqi journalist jailed for making a similar demonstration against US President George W Bush at a press conference.
The London protest was one of 18 that took place across the UK yesterday. There were also rallies in Paris, Berlin, Rome, Athens and several Asian cities.
The protest march at the Israeli embassy in Athens turned violent as demonstrators threw stones and fire bombs at riot police, and officers retaliated with tear gas and stun grenades.
Hundreds of Israelis protested in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square, with up to 10,000, largely Israeli Arabs, taking to the streets in the northern town of Sakhnin.
In London too, the crowds kept pouring in, a mix of ages, colours, and creeds.
Even a group of Orthodox Jews had braved possible hostility and broken the Sabbath to join the protest alongside anti-war campaigners, Muslim groups and ordinary citizens.
Housing officer Derek Perry, 60, and his sculptor friend Maria Smith, 47, from West Norwood, were nursing cups of coffee in cold hands. "I just wanted to be here," said Perry. "You have to make a stand," said Smith.
A group of young men from Leicester were selling copies of Palestinian football strips. "We're nearly sold out and we brought a good 100 or more - it's all for charity," said a delighted Irshad Patel, 23, bartering furiously.
The podium around Nelson's Column had been barricaded off and speakers lined up to make an address. Peace campaigner Bianca Jagger looked down towards Parliament. "I made my speech too soon; I should have waited for them to arrive," she said.
Singer Annie Lennox was there too. Formerly married to an Israeli, she told the Observer: "This is not about political sides any more, this is a sincere and earnest yearning for peace. One and a half million people are trapped inside Gaza; what will the outcome be of a ground war? The world will never be safe again."
Others found the protest upsetting. Rabbi Dr Sidney Brichto, senior vice-president of Liberal Judaism, a federation of liberal synagogues, said: "The demonstration was easy to organise because most of the demonstrators want more than a ceasefire.
"Most of these people want the end of Israel. Hamas are able to plug into latent anti-semitism in the West. It breaks my heart."

Show AllThis poster certainly wants the end of Israel.
And because it was the Brits who screwed up the Palestine Mandate, let them take the zionists in Yorkshire.
See how much fun those folks are when they're in YOUR backyard.
I say give them (the Zionists) a homeland on the Moon or Pluto (and leave Palestine and the rest of planet Earth in peace).
I didn't make it to any demonstrations but I did send a few bucks to Islamic Relief to help Palestinians. So here's my challenge, if you love Palestinians and grieve for what's happening, put your money where your mouth is and ante up! Every little bit helps. And to all those who have given, may good karma come your way.
The time for speechmaking, protesting and marching is over. It hasn't worked for 6 years to get US troops out of Iraq and the endless murder and mayhem the Bush junta brought to that country, and it won't do anything to make Israel stop bombing Gaza, killing innocent Palestinians, and claiming they're the real victims. It's time to storm the barricades protecting these government officials enabling these atrocities, in London, Washington and anywhere else the authoritarian scumbags sit issuing their orders to keep the killing machines in motion. They aren't listening to our polite requests that they stop murdering and destroying. They know we won't do anything but gather in big well-mannered mobs waving signs and chanting slogans, and they know they'll remain as safe as ever behind their desks and in their staterooms. The Masters of War aren't impressed by the predictable thousands forever marching in protest. They'll just keep killing, torturing and wrecking everything in sight that stands in the way of their determination to rule the world according to US/Israeli designs. Knock down the walls protecting them from justice. Let them find out firsthand what justice looks like. They aren't interested in having the concept patiently explained to them. Or maybe, it's only the abstract definition they do pay attention to. These assholes in Washington, London and the Zionists in Israel and elsewhere need to know what justice is, up close and personal. Marching and yelling slogans eternally won't accomplish that.
Here's an article you might like: http://news.infoshop.org/article.php?story=03/03/17/8281751
It is most advisable that when one is complaining of the "neighbors" house being "unkempt", that they claen their own first.
We can start with the Bush administration being charged with crimes and held for trial in the International Court of Justice.
Your silence is your consent.
nurmebergrevisited@gmail.com
Well, I think that's what I was suggesting. I'm certainly not saying "the neighbors" should be cleaning their house while ours is in squalor, and I've hardly been silent for 8 years about the criminal regime in the White House. I've been to marches and demonstations, signed literally countless petitions for impeachment and war crimes trials, written almost daily about it, gotten into arguments with both rightwingers and liberals who think the Democrats (and Obama) are going to set things right again, but none of it has had the slightest effect. And neither will all the marching and sign waving over the Israeli attack on Gaza and the Zionists' 60-year persecution of the Palestinians.
The killing machine isn't deterred by all our feeble protesting and sloganeering. If anything, it's further empowered by it because the warlovers know there's no teeth behind our incessant verbiage, and they respect nothing but force. Bush, Cheney, and their chief henchmen will never appear before the International Criminal Court because the US doesn't recognize its authority. Sorry, they alone make the rules, and nobody stops them. Since these mafia thugs illegally seized power, in 2000, they haven't given a damn about any laws anywhere except the ones they pass to enlarge their own theater of power and domination. Neither did Tony Blair, and neither does Gordon Brown. None of them are answerable to us nobodies; they answer only to their benefactors, the corporate interests that made them puppets to capitalist control.
That's how it is when "democracy" is only an empty myth. We live in an oligarchic, plutocratic kleptocracy, and we run around like morons every day referring to this as a democracy. No wonder the criminals keep getting away with murder, piracy and mayhem. They've succeeded in making most of us believe we live in a system where we all decide together what policies we're going to pursue. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The mid-east was divided up into countries after the war. Only 1% became Israel, the rest became Muslim countries. There was no Palestine before Israel was created, no Palestinians before Israelis. No country would help the Jews during the holocaust. The US refused to help or defend Jews and sent Jewish refugees back. Israel was created, by the US and Britain, possibly for the purpose of a country to defend the Jews, but in the middle of the Arab/Muslim world. Muslims and Jews, and Christians, lived throughout the mid-east. When Israel was created, all its neighbors, Muslim countries all, attacked Israel. Israel won that war. Attacked again, they won again. If they had not been attacked they would still be as small as when Israel began. Hamas and Hezbollah keep it up. BTW,Christian Arabs are being forced out of West Bank and Iraq. Have you read Doonesbury? Hamas and Hezbollah have called for the elimination of Israel and the Jews. Is not that a call for genocide? Please look at this video.
http://fun.mivzakon.co.il/flash/video/2664/26
It would be highly recommended that you study some history, (not Israeli/USA propaganda, and NOT the religious propaganda)but Palestine was called Palestine by the Romans, and the name predates the Christians.
Doonesbury is a cartoon/comic and may be considered 'literature' by the 'Bush definition of literature', but then Mr. Bush and most of his administration are most likely on their way to prison for the rest of their lives. He may have a chance to "catch up on his reading".
When an open forum such as CD exists specifically for the purpose of information, discussion, and intelligent exchanges between informed and intelligent individuals, it is inevitable that view points such as yours are included.
They are such great comic relief, as to be worth sifting through to find what some people are actually capable of.
So, if the Gentile nations divided up the area it was illegitimate prior to that? It was vacant--no one lived there or had a claim to their homes and lands? "The rest became Muslim countries..." I see, their land was bequested to them by the benevolent Gentiles. No Palestine and no Palestinians before the European Jewish refugees settled--because the land was empty & there was no one there--and it wasn't like the benevolent Gentiles gave them Germany, after all, no, they gave them someone else's home--people who had nothing to do with the Holocaust. No country would help the Palestinians during the holocaust. The US refused to help or defend Palestinians and armed and supported those out to drive them into the sea. Israel gets the lions share of the US taxpayer money to win their genocidal wars that are like shooting fish in a barrel. Hamas has stated that it would recognize the state of Israel with borders at the Green line. Of course, you will never see that in the US media.
S Cohen: Thank you for your great comment; it should be printed in all newspapers here....
Cavedweller: of yourse you are absolutely right about the "anti-semite" label Israel has used for decades as a deterrent against justified critisicm (to blame Hamas for AS is laughable since the Palestinians are also "semites"..)
but I am afraid you are wrong in assuming that only USrael is supporting this massacre in Gaza. Here in Europe the mainstream media has swallowed the Israeli "public diplomacy" hook, line and sinker.
Hamas has been so dehumanized, the information war has been so effective (99% of Europeans have never heard about the attempted "regime change" in Gaza)
http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2008/04/gaza200804
and most people know very little about the history of the Middle East since 1914.
Israel`s success strategy is to isolate the Palestinian violence from their own crimes, to take it out of the historic and actual context and the media are supporting this by repeating the same slogans over and over... (Israel had no choice... Israel is only defending its people .... Israel is always acting in self-defense...against ruthless and evil killers) OUR VIOLENCE IS GOOD. THEIR VIOLENCE IS EVIL. END OF MEDIA DEBATE.
Ilan Pape, a courageous Israeli historian (author of : THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE) recently wrote a great comment about what is driving this insane policy in Israel:
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article10100.shtml
/"Israel's righteous fury and its victims in Gaza")
If only our politicians and journalists would read it and act....
It is good to see that people protest against Israel´s crimes and the complicity of our leaders but - as we have seen before the Iraq War and also recently when thousands protested against the Wall Street Bailout - what is left of democracy, when you have the freedom to gather and protest but the governments ignore the will of the people... Noam Chomsky is right: citizens have become spectators but have no right to decide the actual policies... (Obama???)
(Has anyone noticed that Israels aggression has also served to distract attention from the zillions wasted on the Wall Street crooks...and to raise stock prices....?)
Who knew?
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/jan2009/nyga-j05.shtml
Really?
I didn't see anything on my TV except for an endless loop on CNN of a dozen or so Jewish-American school girls standing on a street corner with their Israeli flags.
This is why the prospect of mass demonstration or protest is futile. Might as well be invisible because who knew?
The Israeli military has reportedly dropped the following propaganda leaflets on Gaza trying to get desperate people to spy and act as traitors. I have just sent the following message to the e-mail contained in the propaganda leaflet and encourage others to do the same.
(article) Israeli military propaganda leaflet: Spy for Israel: Jets drop recruitment leaflets over Gaza Strip -- 02 Jan 2009 -- Israeli airplanes dropped leaflets calling for Gazans to inform their military of the whereabouts of projectile launchersin return for aid and assistance. The papers were found by the thousands all over Gaza on Friday morning and bear the signature of the Israeli military... 'Your anonymity is guaranteed. Call us at the following number: 02-5839749 Or you can e-mail us at: helpgaza2008@gmail.com to provide us with any information on the terrorist factions. Note: To protect your safety, we ask you to be ecretive when you call us. Head of the Israeli Defense Forces' (end article)
(Text of my e-mail to Israeli military at helpgaza2008@gmail.com) We have no intention of helping you in any way. Our intention is to condemn you as widely as possible for your attacks on civilian populations and for war crimes. (end text)

Annie Lennox my Heroine. Up to today I 'just' loved her
music. But now my admiration is endless.
The question is, where is Jerry Seinfeld? The guy has
a voice in the states, like no other. What about all those
Movie and Rock Stars and Starlets?
I can read about John Travolta's tragic loss of his son Jett
all over the 'American Web' and my sympathies go to his
family.
But where are the news about the killed Palestinian sons
and daughters, slaughtered by the IDF?

the ANSWER Coalition, among others, is organizing a demonstration in DC on Jan 12. You can get details at their website.

I don't know how many of you have to deal w/******* Outlook Express, but so many of my emails w/edge to them face "some unkown error has occurred." No, the error is known; it is that OE is complicit w/the fascist regime in Washington.
I have tried to ask members of the Knessett to call of the Luftwaffe & blitkrieg, and liberate the concentration camp that is Gaza.
Afghanistan, the West Bank, Haiti, Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza etc.
The whole world recognizes Washington, TelAviv, London as the most serious axis-of-evil. But, the corrupt MSM, in all of its facets, does all it can to render Americans as, or seeming to be, stupid.
The most important book I have read over the holidays is a Christmas gift, Give Me Liberty by Naomi Wolf.
My friend, You have to uninstall all those MasoSado (MS) products from
Your system. I just fixed a pc of a friend. His computer had 173 virus
infections all entering his pc through 'Outlook Express' .wab files, plus
a dozen trojan horses, delivered through 'Internet Explorer' script files.
The solution is very simple. Use Mozilla Firefox as a browser and
Mozilla Thunderbird instead of OE. That will solve most of Your problems.

Mammon needs blood.
Israel is a terrorist run by lunatics who should be try for war crime.
I just sent the following to Livni:
As an American Jew, I call for you to stop this aggression against Gaza
The Israeli invasion and bombing of Gaza has resulted in hundreds of deaths. This aggression is inhumane and a violation of human rights. Is it not enough that Israel has barricaded Palestinians within what amounts to a refugee camp pressed up against the sea? Israel and the U.S., not too long ago, attempted to overthrow Hamas, the democratically elected government... Israel time and time again broke the truce with "targeted" killings. Of course Hamas eventually responded with rockets. What else did you expect? Israeli policy of blockades, continued settlement, targeted killings, and gross disrespect for the Palestinian people in no way leads to peace. Violent suppression simply strengthens the Hamas position.
Given the plight of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, it is heart breaking to see Jews commit the present crimes against Palestinians.
Shame, shame, shame,
S. Cohen
Thank you, S. Cohen.
SC thank you for your courage.
Thank you for saying what needs to be said, S. Cohen, and sending it. Shalom & namaste /cm

I think there are quite a few American Jews who feel similarly. I don't know if speaking out will change American or Israeli policy (I have my doubts as Obama seems to buy into the --all too distorted-- Israeli narrative), but people from all walks of life have to speak out.

This article is inadequate. We should be able to write our own articles with our own photos. No mention at all, for example, of the demo in Toronto I attended yesterday with 10,000 people. Nothing anti-semitic and nothing violent in this demonstration. But it was spirited, loud, passionate.
Hard-hitting juxtaposition in this You-Tube/blog piece: "Is It For Freedom? Mourning the Innocent Lives Lost in Gaza" at:
http://www.mnprogressiveproject.com/diary/2404/is-it-for-freedom-mourning-the-innocent-lives-lost-in-g...
Those who can be made to believe absurdities can be made to commit atrocities. Voltaire
60,000 is 5 times 12,000 not 6. that'd be 72,000.
"Even a group of Orthodox Jews had braved possible hostility and broken the Sabbath to join the protest alongside anti-war campaigners, Muslim groups and ordinary citizens."
The above statement easy to over look - and what would the article look like without it?
The authors trying to make it seem that mainly Muslims are upset at what is going on in Gaza. Even Annie Lennox, whose ex husband was Jewish, would seem there more to piss off her ex than because the genocide upsets her - according to the wording of the authors. Patel sounds East Indian - giving him more chance of being Sikh than Muslim - there is a bit of difference between the two. For one, you can watch NHL games broadcast in Punjabi but not Arabic.
There are Britains of Jewish Ancestry speaking out against the potential genocide in Gaza as well, but the absence of the above statement would render them invisible.
Not all Germans were Hitler.
Not all Americans were Bush.
Not all Jews support genocide in Gaza.

The last comment by Rabbi Dr Sidney Brichto is a joke. Bringing up the word anti-semitism every time things start to go in a direction you don't like is pathetic. If you're going to commit atrocities on another people at least have the decency to own up to it. Seriously it's like a rapist saying I can rape people because I was raped, and that doesn't fly with me.
The comments of the Rabbi, "sr VP of Liberal Judaism" are enough to convince the reader (if they are not biased to begin with) of the error in reestablishing the Israeli nation.
1). "Liberal Judaism" would be by even the most conservative of definitions and oxymoron.
2). "Hamas are able to plug into the latent antisemitism of the west"
anti Semites and anti Israel are two different matters. If you are born a Semite it is a matter out of your control and you should not be held responsible any more than your skin color, or eye or hair color. To be Israeli is a matter of choice and then to support a violent and ruthless nation is insanity. If many people disapprove of the Israelis it is most likley as a result of the Israelis actions instead of their lineage.
3). The irony of the protest is not lost on the informed observer. Great Brittan, "historically" has created so much death and destruction of other nations as to make the USA seem paltry in comparison, has members of its society that disapprove of their nation's actions. Instead of throwing shoes, perhaps 'Annie' and 'Bianca' would be more effective and have more credibility if they were protesting to make the needed changes in the leadership of their parliament. I'm sure it 'looks good' to be protesting the actions of those in leadership than to make the needed changes in the leadership.
It may be somewhat consoling to the observers here in the USA to know that the Brits are just as screwed up as the 'Yanks'......and they have 'nukes' also.
We can make the changes here first, then perhaps the others of the world may follow the true leaders.
Your silence is your consent.
nurembergrevisited@gmail.com
Most of what you say is spot on, but your criticisms of Annie Lennox and Bianca Jagger are presumptive: many of us do more than one thing at a time with our activism. I've been protesting Israel's aggression and at the same time I do all I can to bring down our corrupt corporatist militarist exceptionalist government.
Lets flood the Knesset with emails of protest. Here is the Website for the Knesset which has email addresses for all members:

Thanks for these e-mail addresses!! (: I'm going to keep mine short and to the point, without vitriol - yet angry and concise.
Here's a short and concise one and you can quote me. :-)
Fuck Israel
It seems that the only supporters of the Judeo-fascist assault on Gaza are Isreal and its warmongering patron the US.
Those of us who oppose Isreal's tyranny and genocide are labeled anti-semetic. Most thinking people in today's world see Isreal and the US for what they are: oppressive occupiers.
