Friends of the Earth Action Endorses Joe Biden for President

WASHINGTON -

The Board of Directors for Friends of the Earth Action announced its endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden for President of the United States today.

Erich Pica, president of Friends of the Earth Action, issued the following statement on behalf of the board:

In 2016, Friends of the Earth Action took a pass on fully endorsing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after she won the Democratic nomination for President. We believed that the fight for progressive environmental policies would be more successful if we did not lend our name and credibility to Secretary Clinton. We underestimated Donald Trump’s ability to win the electoral college. We will not make this mistake again.

After four years of chaos, tragedy and absolute corruption, the choice we face in November could not be any clearer or more important. That is why Friends of the Earth Action is endorsing Vice President Biden for President. We must elect him in November, and we need every progressive voter to join us.

The climate plan Vice President Biden unveiled this summer is the most ambitious we’ve ever seen from a Democratic presidential nominee. His commitment to invest $2 trillion over the next four years to fight climate change centers Black, Indigenous, and frontline communities most impacted by fossil fuel production and pollution. The Vice President clearly listened to community members, activists, and scientific experts and adjusted his plan so it more closely matches the scale of the crisis we face.

While there is no doubt that we will continue to have deep disagreements with Vice President Biden over policy, personnel, and ambition, he has already shown willingness to shift his approach. He heeded progressive calls to center environmental justice and overhauled his climate and energy plans to match the scale of the crisis we face.

Our endorsement of Vice President Biden is a clarion call to all progressive environmentalists, including those who supported Senators Warren or Sanders, those who may not have voted in 2016, or those who voted third party: We must elect Vice President Biden and support his campaign in every way possible.
