The Beast Is Starved: Welcome to the Next Great Depression
Since Reagan, Republicans have been on a “starve the beast” campaign – by which they mean eviscerate the government by taking away as much revenue as they can.
Starving the beast has been the biggest bait and switch con game that has ever been perpetrated on the American people. And the most tragic.
"Well, if past is prologue, welcome to the next Great Depression." (photo of mother and children during the Great Depression in Elm Grove, California by Dorothea Lange)
As Paul Krugman pointed out, Republicans offered popular tax cuts so that they could later cut popular government programs “as a necessity.” Oh, we’d love to continue providing low cost, effective medical care under Medicare, but you see, the country just can’t afford it … Of course we can’t. Billionaire hedge fund managers and Wall Street traders pay less in taxes than their secretaries. And most corporations pay little or no taxes.
Starve the Beast was coupled with a clever campaign to make government appear to be a collection of bumbling bureaucrats who wasted tax money for pure pleasure. Long after it became politically impossible to stereotype racial and ethnic groups (with the possible exceptions of Muslims) it was – and is – quite acceptable to characterize government workers as shiftless, lazy and incompetent.
As a result, once the Republicans succeeded in cutting government revenue to the bone and beyond, it became impossible to raise taxes – who wants to give any more of their hard earned money to a bunch of lazy bureaucrats?
Never mind that most big government programs are far more efficient than their private sector equivalents. That’s a mere fact. Can’t let that get in the way of starving the beast.
Bait and switch. Divide and Conquer.
So, after starting with a surplus in 2000, Republicans used two wars, two rounds of tax cuts, and a giant giveaway to big Pharma, to get the country racking up debt like a drunken sailor.
Along comes the Bush recession, and the debt accelerates, and the Republicans declare the debt to be an “emergency” and right on schedule immediately attack popular programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Student loans –and virtually anything that doesn’t help the uber rich or the corporations suddenly must be cut if we are to stay solvent.
Never mind that cutting Social Security to balance the budget is like attacking the mailman because your car doesn’t work. It has nothing to do with the budget – but again, that’s a mere fact. When you’re drowning the beast, facts don’t matter.
So OK. The beast is drowned. Keynes is dead. Now what?
Well, if past is prologue, welcome to the next Great Depression.
See, the dirty little secret is that we never had a debt “crisis.” We had a jobs crisis.
While Republicans were arguing about the faux “crisis” and the press and Obama joined them, we got a series of disturbing economic signals. Consumer confidence was down, manufacturing was off, May and June’s job numbers were pathetic. In fact, if not for a hiring binge by McDonald’s there would have been a net job loss in May. That’s something to hang your hat on: McDonalds accounted for what little job growth there was. What’s next, America gets saved by an uptick in Wall Mart greeters?
Look. This whole drown the beast strategy has been nothing more than a stealth tactic for instituting an extremist version of a laissez faire, market uber-alles policy designed by and for the Plutocracy.
And to be sure, it’s worked great for them. Today, the richest 1% owns 40% of the nation's wealth, and the top 10% owns nearly 75% of it.
The rest of us? Not so much.
Income and wealth inequality in the US has been increasing rapidly since Reagan, (with a slight break under Clinton). In terms of income inequality, the US now ranks about the same as Ivory Coast, Uganda and Cameroon – countries not exactly noted for being prosperous, equitable and just societies.
News flash for all the debt mongers, Tea Partiers and other assorted ignoramuses. You can’t run a consumer-based economy when the vast majority of consumers don’t have enough money to buy anything. After all, Paris Hilton can only buy so many yachts; Corporate CEOs can only purchase so many jetliners – even with their special jet tax credits; and Wall Street traders can only buy so many Bugattis. But middle and working class Americans need to spend their money on food, lodging, and other necessities.
Here’s the dirty little secret: Republicans want the economy to fail. They want Obama to fail, and they don’t care who gets hurt in the process. They want these things, because the beast is in the bathtub and they can almost taste its demise.
The pieces are in place for the Plutocrats final victory … an industry friendly Supreme Court; a Democratic Party that is either in collusion with the plutocrats, or so cowardly as to be neutered; a press that reports outlandish lies and objective facts as if they were equivalent; and a public that is dazed and confused and convinced the government is their enemy.
But government isn’t the enemy. Laissez faire economic policies are. Every time we’ve tried them, they've produced profound income inequalities and the severe economic downturns that inevitably follow.
With private industry sitting on top of some $2 trillion in profits, exporting jobs, and shutting down plants, only government spending stood between us and an economic Armageddon.
Now, nothing does.
So, congratulations, America. You’ve finally gotten big bad gubmint off your back.
Enjoy the coming Great Depression.

I guess the answer is like Michelle Obama says to build more Walmarts. It's the only way to feed the poor???
Did she actually say that? Craven.
Actually it will be the combination of the two great american tragedies: Yes, the great depression but we'll also have to throw in the civil war in my prognostication!
I Love IT! Like Geo. Carlin I love disasters! I'm happy the DOWs down over 500pt I love the scared looks as their borrowed FED money disintergrates along with the fake dividendes they will also miss!
I agree Shamerica is toast! only the safe 1% doesn't seem to get it! they do today!! >^^<
Well, here's on article on Wal-Mart and M. Obama:
http://www.grist.org/food/2011-07-21-walmart-michelle-obama-and-the-future-of-food
Personally I think Trader Joe's could do a better job in these food "deserts". I used to think the food was was probably too pricy until I went into it one day was hooked. A big box of really good cereal without crap in it for between $1.99 and $2.40. Even the higher-priced products like Kashi are cheaper at Trader Joe's than at Wal-Mart. It's a much better place to work than Wal-Mart, too.
I'll take Costco over either Wal-Mart or Trader Joe's, thank you.
Thanks for the link.
I must confess that, as much as I despise Wal-Mart and all its stands for, as one of the long-term unemployed, if there was a Wal-Mart near by, I'm not sure I'd have the fortitude not to shop there.
The long-termed unemployed don't support Walmarts - it's the shrinking Middle Class, cutting their own throats.
An attempt to build a Wal-Mart within our general vicinity got scrapped, because, thankfully, it met with a lot of resistance, and justifiably so. I'd never shop at a Wal-Mart, either, even if one was within easy distance of where I presently reside.
I continually need to spend less and don't have many low-cost groceries nearby, all I was saying. If a Wal-Mart did pop up, I don't actually know what I'd do...but I'd sure be tempted. My unemployment doesn't even pay the rent.
Don't be silly. Of course not; she's an intelligent woman.
Michelle's comment is typical of the underlying thinking that dovetails with Obama's behavior. It really doesn't matter whether he meant to starve government and ruin the safety nets, or whether he's a vain man who shuns confrontation and hides his unsureness and inexperience behind a facade of coolness and hesitancy, His vanity is such that he will allow millions to suffer because he blew it...or meant to blow it.
IMO he is part conservative, but mostly a seriously ineffective person who became so used to having his ring kissed that he just winged it. And he sure winged it with the wrong bunch of advisors.
Sadly there is no way he can generate jobs after surrendering our budget and everything else to the GOP. He doesn't have the money 'cause he gave it to the enemy. He has been consistently unprepared, indifferent, and inept. Philosophicaly we have no idea what he stands for. Does he know?
That the leadership of the Democratic party didn't see this and head him off is spellbinding in it's political malpractice and cowardice.
Whining and complaining about the GOP will get Obama and WH flacks nowhere.
This was a naked sellout and the bungling and wrangling over the Debt Ceiling has not helped what the Market did today.
The world watched as Obama sold out generations of progress created by progressives and others that created an enviable society. flaws and all.
The world watched as a handful of lunatics were permitted to outfox the leader of the free world as he surrendered everything he claimed to have stood for.
The panic and lack of confidence we experienced in todays markets are part of the nightmare created by lunatics who won the debate as our president failed to lead.
Very well said. Get ready for the rise of a new generation of Hoovervilles. The Dems have proven to be worse than useless in this and, in many cases, complicit. I have a copy of the great 1940 film "The Grapes of Wrath" and I watch it once in a while. I now wonder just how far into that nightmare of the 30s that my formerly prosperous country will descend. If what these bankster scum and their cohorts in Congress have done to us is not treason then I don't know what is.
"I now wonder just how far into that nightmare of the 30s that my formerly prosperous country will descend."
It depends on how far we let them. After all, they derive their power from the consent of the governed.
Haven't stopped emails from Dems (DNC, etc.) but usually erase without looking. The only ones I open these days are from Russ Feingold's org. I get stuff from Burnie too, which I also open. Got something from Michelle the other day with the word "birthday" in its subject header. I suspect it was playing the folksy card for our CIC. I imagine it was as full of tripe as a Palin speech.
What chutzpah!
ARE YOU Serious??? 12 years of Bushes got us here, and Boehner picked up the flag and ran with it, screaming, "Don't let the President get anything accomplished! Get him, everyone!" You Republicans would rather destroy the country than allow him to do his job. Hypocrite!
And you know Ms Obama did not say that. BULL!
Can`t blame only the Bush`s, you also have to blame Reagan he started the ball rolling
Carter, Clinton & Obama are also to blame as all three followed a neo-lberal program. Carter was our 1st neo-lib prez.
The Dem apologists can scream till their throats are raw but that won't change the fact that both parties are run by corporate/financeer elites.

We get what we voted for. Americans have decided over and over and over and over to put DemPublicans into power. Many Americans decide to do this by not voting. Others decide to do this by voting for the least worst. Most of us decide to do this by voting for the candidates with the ads that most effectively manipulate our minds and emotions. We should have learned by now that it is dumb to vote for DemPublicans. In the next elections, vote, yes, do vote, but vote only for 3rd party candidates. Any candidates advertising on TV are giving us the evidence that they are liars and are corrupt. They are liars because advertising is based on polling and market research. Their ads say what they know will get you to like them. The ads do not say anything truthful or informative. They are corrupt because TV ads cost a lot of money, which they can only get from bribes. It is dumb to vote for DemPublicans.
That's what we're going to do, no matter what. No D's or R's, but finally only candidates we know and trust.
[" candidates we know and trust."]--- Yeah, that's what those "TEA SMOKERS" Thought and two thirds of them Rolled over, when the "Party Bosses" "Popped that Whip"!! That Idiot Son of Ron Paul's told the Press that he was going to Vote "NO" and went strait inside and Voted "YES", that's what I call TRUSTWORTHY!!
I disagree. What is DUMB is Wasting your Vote on some one who has as much chance of winning as a SNOW BALL IN HELL!!
What sort of contest is the snow-ball in down there in hell?
How are we supposed to get whether it is likely to win or lose if we don't know what sort of contest it is in?
Our votes don't count extra if the person we vote for wins, or comes in second place, or gets 1 million votes, or anything like that.
The only way a Citizen can "waste" their vote is by not voting.
Well what do you expect?? when offered no choice,, then why choose, Here in CA where we have to much democracy theres usually 3 to 5 silly issues that demand to be voted down! Other wise I might write in one of my cats! My cats I can trust! >^^<
Lawyers not so much :(

What sort of contest is the snow-ball in down there in hell?
How are we supposed to get whether it is likely to win or lose if we don't know what sort of contest it is in?"]------------- I rest my case.....This is not some TV "reality" show fellow/Lady, this is the "Real Deal". You have obviously never lived through a Depression. I was born in 1940, so I came in on the tail end of it, but I still remember living on what we could grow and preserve from the Garden, of hunt and Kill in the Woods. We had a few Chickens who provided Eggs and occasionally Meat and ate what they were able to scratch out of the ground,Worms,bugs,etc.. In spite of that. we had it good, compared to some of our neighbors who had more mouths to feed. Back in those days though, people stuck together and even though we had nearly nothing, we still shared with those who actually had NOTHING! Those people would die today, because it,s Dog eat Dog these days,"I've got MINE, to hell with YOU"............
Like Stalin's proverb declaration, about voting in short "it only matters who counts the votes....." The Repubicans have wholeheartedly adopted Stalin's strategy and the Repubican election strategy is to count/not count/suppress/just don't let people vote. They rig the vote counting procedure by privatizing the vote counters who are then bribed by the Repubican's to send votes cast to someplace at the North Pole and/or Tennessee to count the "votes" cast in Ohio. Privatized electronic voting speeds up the corruption, just as someone had predicted about electronic voting, it will make the voter/non voter, fraud faster. Being privatized their is no accountability and/or transparency because their vote counting methods are "proprietary" not subject to scrutiny, accountability. Their are $billions to be made just in the bribery and corruption by using Rube Goldberg schemes..
What you are saying, Old Hippie, is that we must choose between a Dimocrap or a Repukelican. They have the corporate money to piss in your ear endlessly on the boob tube. Hear the sizzle of that enough you believe it---in fact you KNOW it is true. It is you being so DUMB that gets the bastards elected. By choosing the corporate candidate you vote to continue the decline of the standard of living of the working class people of our nation. I think that snow ball in hell has a better chance of survival than that of a working American in this depression.

What you are saying, Old Hippie, is that we must choose between a Dimocrap or a Repukelican."]---------- NO sir I wouldn't waste my time trying to communicate with someone who has closed his mind. THIS old Hippie OWNS 3/4 Acre of Central Florida, with a 12 Month Growing Season, because I saw this coming years ago and started preparing for it,( having Survived the tail end of the last one). The "Old Hippie" will be just fine as long as I can crawl out there and Pick my Citrus and Bananas, Tomatoes and Beans, collect the Eggs from the Chickens, etc..
So you just keep on beating on that damn Drum, Preaching about some Imaginary "WORKING CLASS" while the "REAL DEAL" is eating fresh Fruit and Home Grown Chicken!
Central Fl is nice, but I can't deal with the heat and humidity from May thru Sept.
Good Lord, man! It's not like betting on a horse.
You should use your vote to stand against corrupt oligarchy because first, it's the only moral and humane thing to do, and second, you perpetuate a corrupt system by choosing between the Reactionary Party (Republicans) and the Conservative Party (Democrats).
Has Barrack Obama's presidency taught you nothing?
Let me get this straight, oldFAKEhippie01:
Voting for Nader or McKinney - wasted vote.
Voting for Obama - not wasted vote. Good idea, in fact.
Got it. Thanks.
right. 'cause that sure showed everybody in 2000, right? My little bro voted for Nader. Thanks, we got 8 years of Bush. Nader isn't even running anymore. He might have done some good had he started with a congressional seat.
I understand your passion and principle, but it would be MUCH smarter to do that at the local and state and congressional level. We have to work up to making it a smart option at the Presidential level.
Acting on your emotions usually means you are not making a wise decision. This is EXACTLY what the tea-partier nutbags do.
Making a protest vote is a time-honored tradition. When you can't stomach either of the "big 2" you vote for some other candidate in one of the small parties. If enough people did it instead of voting for the "lesser of two evils" and hanging on to the status quo, it would send a clear message to the big 2 parties that we're not buying what they are selling. I made protest votes my entire voting life until 2008. I wasn't cowed into thinking that Obama was so terrible liberal, and caught little things during the campaign that told me he tilted to the right more than the left. However, I knew McCain/Palin could be an absolute disaster. Ergo: I voted for the lesser of two evils out of the fear of more wide-spreas war in the Middle East.
Living here in MS, I don't have anyone to vote for other than the big 2, but I can write in a name. I'm going to write in Bernie Sanders.
Obama is definitely what you would call a DemRepublican. I always said Bill Clinton was a Republican in drag. I think he may have joined the Democratic party back in Arkansas when he ran for gov, because the state had a record of only electing Democratic governors.Years after Clinton's time, Huckaby won on the Republican ticket, the first in 100 years. In any case, I think Clinton being in the Democratic party is simply a political convenience. Obama is even worse. The Repubs have been working at this outcome and worse for decades Obama played right into their and gave away the store. The Repubs should want Obama to be elected in 2012. He will be compliant, and as things get worse, he can be blamed. The Repubs would reclaim the White House in 2016. And then the cherry can be put on the sundae as we slide into a depression that may never end without revolution.
Hey oldhippie01 if you votre for either mainstream party the only people who win are the oil companies, the MIC, and the banks!
Hello SeriousCitizen,
Have you checked the new phony voting machines. They are dial a vote machines. Only the programmers know the outcome. Most elections do not get a recount and following Wisconsin the paper trail was also is a sham. What counts is who counts the votes not who casts the votes. J. S. Not an exact quote but the gist is there.
Who's this we? I didn't get who I voted for. I spent a good five minutes typing in the names of my friends, not with some wiz bang, modern QWERTY device but rather a one of these antique looking, "Lost in Space", crappy Sequoia voting machines with the letter buttons lined up in two rows in alphabetical order. Doesn't matter how cheap they look, just as long as churn out Republican selections. Voters mumbling and making noises like the voting tent were the only unisex WC in a popular restaurant. It was fun.
At the very least, a second Depression will only assist the lower 99% from clearly being able to see who inhabits the upper classes.
Think you're going to go for a drive downtown in your Beemer?
Think you're going to feel safe wearing your Gucci loafers into the city?
Think you're going to feel safe as the gates to your community close on the slums in which everyone else inhabits?
With no more available credit and no more jobs, the next Depression may perversely become the worst nightmare the elite could have ever dreamed of.
You thought it was going to finally install yourselves as lords and masters.
All it will make of you is targets.
The top 1% are sufficiently isolated from the masses and able to fund extensive security programs for themselves and their families that they don't need to worry, and the media they own (with its blame the victims slant) has convinced the potential threats that it is you and I, not the top 1% that is the cause of their pain and suffering.
Keep your powder dry and your head down..
No, no, ray, see that's their big mistake.
You and I are not the ones they should be afraid of, not by a long shot.
See, we're simply messengers, canaries in the proverbial coalmine.
We're still "civilized" enough to be posting on blogs and websites, reading articles, etc
We're still sufficiently rational or at least tame.
The people who I am talking about aren't even on the radar yet.
No, no, those people who - having been beaten down for decades - will have grown sufficiently desperate to not care anymore about "extensive security programs" and "media ownership", THOSE are the people I'm talking about that the elite will have to deal with.
The people who will be fighting for their survival and the survival of their famillies.
Look, polls now show that 70-80% of the population wants the rich and corporations to pay more in taxes.
That's a pretty remarkable turn around in just the last 5 years.
With 305,000,000 people comprising the other 99% of the population, that's a lot of disgruntled people, a lot of smart, clever disgruntled people who won't brook anymore crap.
So, I understand your position and admonition but I was merely stating that if the elite are starting to worry now, then they have no idea what they've begun to put in motion.
You are correct, but I'm sure they plan to turn the downtrodden against one another. I see a bunch of Elmer Fudds in brown shirts, "I'm hunting those waskelly wib-tards!".
Recall how easily, as this article mentions, they painted teachers, and other public servants as the enemy.
There will still be TV, fake news and ever more violence and lies, psyops techniques that will turn the desperate against the desperate. Right now, severe gun toting right wing nuts are talking about stringing up the Obama liberals, the "socialists" who have destroyed the country.
Invest in razor wire companies and start a security guard service. The rich will simply fortify and the less rich will protect what they have, as is already the case in most 2nd and 3rd world places.
rvrwalker's comment injects the real unknown - guns. USA-ans have so many guns, and that has the potential to change the dynamic of impoverishment past a tipping point. For example, rich, gun-toting landowners could indeed become the de facto "law" (e.g., Brazil) or, conversely, urban gangs might be eliminated by police/paramilitary in class warfare gone mad. I don't see much chance of poor gunslingers becoming a problem in Aspen / Northern Virginia / Hamptons / Orange Cty . . .
The existing technology of cameras, satellites, drones. etc. will forever protect the money.
In the meantime, much of the country remains oblivious, for now.
Yes. They are also "Christian" and see the "socialists" as forces of the end times. Check out how integrated a certain type of chritian thinking is in the military now - trained crusaders
Im with you Poly. History is full of over reach by the rich, and this is a just a classic example of another one. They simply can't help themselves. IMHO they need to have the you know what scared out of them from time to time to put them back in line.
When you do the math, even if just 10% of the populations knows what's going on, that's over 30 million people pissed off people.
It amazes me that the "tea partiers" are so ignorant of our history.
Over and over you can read the WARNINGS of the various presidents of the past
about corporations, bankers and the vulnerability of permitting them the ominous power of the Supreme Court.
Why america was propserous was FAMILY and small business.
We relinquished this thru monopolies and megastores. Wal-mart has
crushed so many of our communities - forcing our jobs farther away from our
residences to buy the GOODS from ONE community business.
Your right they can't help themselves because Greed is nasty. It is what has
brought us from "UNITED" to "INDIVIDUAL" status.... and now the corporations
are HUGE INDIVIDUALS with supreme power and none of the accountability or repsonsibility of an individual.
HORROR if we didn't have corporations and ultra-wealth? It would be painful but most of us are quite adapted to that by now. For every corporation that leaves america we would have multiple small family business to supply us. If the banks leave my community bank is doing fine or better than the mega i left. If it is imperative for a corporation to survive - Home depot was a product of a UNITED workforce willing to recreate their jobs.
To be a super power - you have to stop getting pushed around and threatened.
so why are we dealing with countries that refer to us as "parasites"? JEEZ - we have floated 70% of them for decades and NOW their views seem a little
UNGRATEFUL.
"I hope that we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which DARE already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country. *Thomas Jefferson
[" that's over 30 million people pissed off people."] --- and they ALL have GUNS and are either Hunters or ex-Military with" PTSD", it won't be pretty. You can only push a Man so far, before he rebels and all hell breaks loose..
I'm probably in one of those categories, and it will not be pretty because the forcs on the other side are so adept, trained, technologically immense that my pee shooter is a joke ...... but then there was Nam
I think you are wrong. In any other country, yes. But not here. Because in other countries people are class conscious; they describe themselves as "working class," not as that weaselly (and laughable) "middle class." Elsewhere "middle class" means doctors, lawyers, bankers, with higher education and family money. Working class means the proletariat: miners, laborers, production-line workers. Look back at the Great Depression. The UK had the Jarrow Hunger Marchers. They stuck it to the government and the rich and middle class and made the prosperous ashamed. Countries like France and Germany came very close to revolution. What did the USA have? Salvation Army soup kitchens and lone panhandlers. True there were lots of people involved in left-wing (and right-wing for that matter) politics, but they were mostly middle class intellectuals, whereas in Europe they were the working class people.
They are getting ready for us. This was sufficiently-frightening:
