WASHINGTON

Following today's oral arguments at the Supreme Court in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the Mississippi abortion case threatening to overturn Roe. V. Wade and undermine abortion access for millions of people, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker released the following statement:

"Reproductive freedom is essential, but the far right will stop at nothing to overturn the nearly 50-year precedent guaranteeing a constitutional right to abortion, a goal they have been pursuing since the Supreme Court's decision in 1973. With the aid of Trump who packed the Court with justices who passed his anti-choice litmus test and Mitch McConnell who also stopped at nothing to achieve that goal of a packed Court, we are on the verge of people losing a core constitutional protection. The Court's decision has the power to shape reproductive care for generations to come and will impact millions of people, including Black, Indigenous and other people of color, the LGBTQI+ community, immigrants, young people, people with disabilities, and low income workers. The Supreme Court must protect the right to determine our own futures."

People For the American Way works to build a democratic society that implements the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all. We encourage civic participation, defend fundamental rights, and fight to dismantle systemic barriers to equitable opportunity. We fight against right-wing extremism and the injustice it fosters.
