Trump Campaign Continues To Use Antisemitic Dogwhistles
Campaign doubles down on antisemitic “globalists” trope after July fundraising letter targeting Jewish donors
WASHINGTON - The Trump campaign is once again attacking Jewish donors using the antisemitic trope “globalists,” Bend the Arc said on Monday.
In response to Mike Bloomberg spending $100 million in Florida to support Joe Biden, the Trump campaign responded with a statement calling Bloomberg “an elitist, globalist billionaire." Terms like “globalist elite” have long served as antisemitic dog-whistles among white nationalists who use it as code for “Jews”—and Trump has often been criticized for using the term himself.
In July, the Trump campaign also came under fire for sending out a fundraising letter accusing Jewish billionaires (including Bloomberg) of trying to “rig” the election.
“The Trump campaign continues to scapegoat Jewish people in their desperation to hold onto power by appealing to the worst elements of the Republican base,” said Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc: Jewish Action. “Trump is desperate to distract from his catastrophic handling of the COVID crisis, so he’s trying to point the finger at some of his favorite targets—so-called ‘globalist elites’ who just happen to be Jewish.”
“As Jews, we know how dangerous this is: when politicians target Jewish people, it leads directly to violence against us,” added Cotler. “Antisemitism is part of the machinery of division and fear those politicians rely on for power, but we have a plan to stop them. This November, we’re going to defeat the white nationalist movement that seeks to destroy us all—and start building a country that is truly for all of us.”
