'Women's Assembly For Climate Justice' Event

Brings women’s voices to the forefront on eve of global climate action summit

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, Calif.

Tomorrow, Tuesday September 11th, women leaders from across the U.S. and around the world will share their stories and analysis at the 'Women's Assembly for Climate Justice: Women Leading Solutions on the Frontlines of Climate Change' in San Francisco.

This dynamic public forum is being hosted by the Women's Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) International, just days after the global Rise for Climate march, and on the eve of the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) taking place in California throughout the week.

International advocates and policy-makers, and grassroots, Indigenous, and frontline women leaders will demonstrate why and how women are indispensable actors in climate change solutions - as they speak out against environmental and social injustice; draw attention to root causes of the climate crisis; and present the diverse array of visions, projects, and strategies with which they are working to shape a healthy and equitable world.

WHEN:Tuesday, September 11th from 1:00 to 8:30pm

WHERE: The Green Room (second floor), 401 Van Ness Ave, downtown San Francisco, in the War Memorial Building across the street from San Francisco City Hall

OR online via Facebook livestream - www.facebook.com/WECAN.Intl

WHO: Corrina Gould (Ohlone, Co-Founder of Sogorea Te Land Trust, Co-Founder of Indian People Organizing for Change); Her Excellency President Hilda C. Heine (President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands); Honorable Mary Robinson (President of the Mary Robinson Foundation-Climate Justice, former President of Ireland); Annie Leonard (Executive Director of Greenpeace USA); Pennie Opal Plant (Yaqui & undocumented Choctaw & Cherokee, Co-Founder of Idle No More SF Bay); President Mirian Cisneros (Kichwa, President of the Pueblo of Sarayaky, Ecuador); Casey Camp Horinek (Ponca, Ponca Nation Council-Woman, WECAN Advisory Council Member); Amy Goodman (Host and Executive Producer of Democracy Now!); Jacqueline Patterson (Director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Environmental and Climate Justice Program); Kandi White (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lead Organizer on the Extreme Energy & Just Transition Campaign with the Indigenous Environmental Network); Eriel Deranger (Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Indigenous Climate Action, Canada); Antonia Juhasz (Oil and Energy Analyst, Author and Investigative Journalist) - and many more remarkable presenters!

WHY: The stories of global women are perhaps the most pressing, yet under-reported stories of the climate crisis. Women worldwide are disproportionately impacted by accelerating climate change, but in the midst of hardships, stand as vital stakeholders and visionary solution-builders. It is imperative that their experiences and expertise are centered in the context of the Global Climate Action Summit and related events, and in all media, policy, and decision-making.

The press is invited to record powerful testimony and analysis shared throughout event presentations, and/or to make use of a reserved media space at the Green Room for interviews.

Additionally, press quotes from event speakers are available via our previous press release here - and more information and statements from a Women For Climate Justice Press Conference held earlier in the week may also be explored here.

On September 12th, the day after the event, representatives of the Women's Earth and Climate Action Network, and allies, will formally deliver to the leadership of the Global Climate Action Summit - 'A Call For Climate Justice & Immediate Action: A Message from Women for Climate Justice to the Global Climate Action Summit Steering Committee, Government Representatives and Participants' - a document endorsed by worldwide organizations, and launched at the Women's Assembly for Climate Justice.
