Consumers Demand a Strong CFPB

Conference Call - 12 pm ET Today

WASHINGTON - Americans for Financial Reform (AFR) will host a conference call with reporters and bloggers today at 12:00 PM ET to hear first-hand accounts from victims of deceptive financial products and schemes and why efforts to weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are wrong for consumers.

On Wednesday, a House Financial Services subcommittee will mark-up legislation to weaken the CFPB.

Consumers and advocates, through their own stories, will make the case for an effective agency to maintain and police fair rules of the road for consumer finance. Participants include Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) (invited), a former servicemember, a retiree, a single mother, and leaders from consumer groups.

FRIENDS: Now More Than Ever

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
