When Extremism Learns to Blow Things Up
The revelation by CNN that Norwegian right wing terrorist Anders Behring Breivik kept a diary in which he obsessed about the dangers of cultural Marxism, multiculturalism, and the “Islamification” of Europe will remind many Americans of the tactics of our own right wing (only these themes have been taken up by people much more mainstream in the US than Breivik is in Norway!) The movement to ban the shariah, the castigation of a progressive income tax as “Marxist,” the condemnation of multiculturalism as a threat to Western values, are all themes commonly heard in the US Tea Party and in the right wing of the Israel lobbies.
It would be wrong, of course, to suggest that anyone who hits these themes is a terrorist in waiting or supports violence.
But here is the reason for which such rhetoric is dangerous and can easily lead to social violence.
It is black and white, allowing no nuance. Immigration is not a smooth process, and is attended with problems in some cases. The history of the United States, an immigrant society, suggests that whatever the problems are, they are not insuperable. But Breivik saw Muslim immigration in particular as a threat to the very identity of Europe. That is, if the immigration from the Middle East were allowed to continue, then ultimately there would be no Europe, just a big Iran on all sides of the Mediterranean. Moreover, he imagined this process of Islamification as happening very quickly.
Breivik’s thinking is not new under the sun. Protestant Nativists of the “Native American” and later “Know-Nothing” (i.e. secret society) movement in the 1830s through 1850s in the United States felt exactly the same way about Catholic immigrants to the US. America wouldn’t be America if this went on. Their values were inherently incompatible with the Constitution. Their loyalties were to an anti-modern foreign court dedicated to reinforcement of political and intellectual tyranny. The hordes of them would take over the country before too long. The combination of black-and-white thinking and a conviction that undesirable change is coming very rapidly often provokes violence. Brian Porter’s When Nationalism Learned to Hate makes the point about Poland, that peaceful democratic processes depend crucially on patience and a conviction that the future can be won. When members of a movement become impatient and believe that the situation could quickly and unalterably shift against them, they are much more likely to turn to violence.
Catholic immigrants to the US, like Muslim immigrants to Europe, cannot in fact be characterized in a black and white way. Catholics in the contemporary US are politically and socially diverse, but on the whole are more socially liberal than evangelical Protestants. That is, if the Know-Nothings were afraid of an anti-Enlightenment religious movement, it would have been to their own, Protestant ranks, that they should have looked.
Likewise, making a black-and-white division between “Christian” Europe and “Islam” is frankly silly. The European continent is itself a fiction (it is geologically contiguous with North Africa, and there is no eastern geographical feature that divides it from Afro-Asia). Islam has been the religion of millions of Europeans over the past 1400 years, whether in Umayyad Spain, Arab Sicily, or Ottoman Eastern Europe, and Muslim contributions to European advances are widely acknowledged.
As for contemporary Muslims in Europe, they are diverse. Overwhelmingly, e.g., Parisian Muslims say that they are loyal to France. About half of the Turks in Germany are from the Alevi sect, a kind of folk Shiism, and most of those are not very religious and politically are just social democrats (oh, the horror of Breivik’s nightmare– Muslim progressives in Europe!) That the few hundred thousand Muslims in Spain (pop. 45 mn.) , or the 4 million in Turkey (5 percent of the population) could effect a revolution in European affairs of the sort Breivik fears is frankly absurd, especially since Muslims are not a political bloc who agree with one another about politics and society. They are from different countries and traditions. Many do not have full citizenship or voting rights, most of the rest are apolitical. But even if they became a substantial proportion of the population, they would be unlikely to change Europe’s way of doing things that much.
Breivik, of course, also exercised black-and-white thinking about the left of center currents in Europe, amalgamating them all to Marxism, presumably of a Soviet sort, and seeing them as taking over. In fact, ironically, it is parties and rhetoric that Breivik would have approved of that are making the most rapid strides in Europe. Right wing parties that would once have been pariahs have been power brokers in Sweden and Finland, and Nicolas Sarkozy has borrowed so much rhetoric from the LePens that some accuse him of legitimizing them.
Worrying about the impact of immigration is not pernicious. Opposing leftist political ideas is everyone’s right in a democracy. Disagreeing over religion is natural.
But when you hear people talking about lumping all these issues together; when you hear them obliterating distinctions and using black-and-white rhetoric; when you hear them talk of existential threats, and above all when you see that they are convinced that small movements that they hate are likely to have an immediate and revolutionary impact, then you should be afraid, be very afraid. That is when extremism learns to hate, and turns to violence.
Democracy depends on a different kind of rhetoric. Healthy politics is about specific programs, not about conspiracy theories as to what underlies someone’s commitment to a program. Most Americans don’t want people to die because of not being able to afford health care. Lambasting that sentiment as tyrannical Bolshevism is a recipe for social conflict.
Unfortunately, some unscrupulous billionaires, Rupert Murdoch and the Koch Brothers prominent among them, have honed their propaganda skills in the media and public life. The promotion of hate, panic, and fear, especially if it is tied to specific political, ethnic and religious groups, always risks violence.
The real message of Breivik is that we should all take a deep breath and step back from the precipice.

Show Allfirst off my sincere condolences to the victims of this crime and their families as well
i see on drudge today a shooting of 5 at a texas roller rink and 10 at a seattle car show
now we see the nwo develop this concept of the white al queada
as reported on drudge last week dhs identifies whites as the most significant terrorists in america
so - diary notwithstanding - let us wait and see how this plays out before making quick judgments about this shooting
it is a mass murder so far
when you hear the mainstream media push it as an act of terrorism over and over and over again - then you know its all part of a plan
to me this guy looks like a classic patsy - head shots and all - he reminds me of lee harvey oswald and tim mcveigh
mkultra material
so be wary about this - let's hold off judgment until we actually have some facts to consider instead of our we don't need no stinking facts attitude of the past
"to me this guy looks like a classic patsy" -- what an incredibly strange (and fucked up) thing to say
Now it looks like conspiracy theorists don't even need a murmuring of paranoid rumour to get them cranking. Just a headline. Just wait for Oslo Truthers.
oh candide - loved your opera btw - people like you who believe everything you see on tv or wherever make me laugh
fyi: the police are now "looking into" a second gunman which would in fact make it a conspiracy theory
your the kind of sheeple who got a buzz out of the bin laden psyop and believe he is sleeping with the fishes in the indian ocean
like 9/11, 7/7. oaklahoma city (which clinton admits got him re-elected), jfk, mlk, paul wellstone, vince foster, ron brown and on and on
glad to know you believe the gov in all things cause after all - they wouldn't lie would they
i guess you are not familiar with american history mate
read a book
the classic "lone crazed gunman" is the psyop that keeps working over and over again because folks like you believe what they see on tv or wherever you get your misinfo
as i say - classic patsy
Med: I don't see McViegh as another Lee Harvey Oswald. This was clearly an act of revenge for the unwarranted and badly botched violent attack by local authorities, then the outright murder, burning alive of 80+ men, women and children by the Federal Government. I don't care who or what occupied the compound in Waco, the violence used against them was morally wrong, illegal needless and disgusting. In the end, the universe dispensed its justice. For every action there is a reaction. I'm not defending McViegh, I'm not condoning what he did, but there was a reason and clear method to his own violent madness. It could have easily have been your kid, mom, dad, wife or husband that died – in Waco or Oklahoma City. Law enforcement and Bill Clinton overstepped their bounds. Its important to remember that. Next time they may be coming for you.
Moonpie, I agree that based on what can be reliably discerned about LHO and McV, they were quite different "Lone Nuts". Unlike Oswald, McVeigh lived long enough after his arrest to provide a limited first-hand account of his mind-set and possible motivation.
The common denominator is that the government and mass-media Combine successfully trimmed off all of the controversial and problematic loose ends and open questions, and reduced multi-dimensional actual people into a pasteurized processed Lone Nut product that went down smooth with a credulous and complacent Amerikan public, was appropriately filling, and left no unpleasant aftertaste.
FYI, check out this article if you haven't already done so:
The Meaning of Timothy McVeigh by Gore Vidal - September, 2001*
"Americans were fed the story of Timothy McVeigh’s trial and execution as a simple, unquestionable narrative: he was guilty, he was evil, and he acted largely alone. Gore Vidal’s 1998 Vanity Fair essay on the erosion of the U.S. Bill of Rights caused McVeigh to begin a three-year correspondence with Vidal, prompting an examination of certain evidence that points to darker truths—a conspiracy willfully ignored by F.B.I. investigators, and a possible cover-up by a government waging a secret war on the liberty of its citizens."
* http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2001/09/mcveigh200109
yes, the massacre perpetrated at Waco by Janet Reno on behalf of our government is worse than anything the Sirian or Libyan governments may have done or are doing, and, just to set the record straight, I am totally against the NATO bombing of Libya; saying that they wanted to protect civilians that Gadafi was killing in the "tens of thousands" (turned out to be 110) NATO has killed about 700 civilians
"white al queada"
In fact, al-Qaeda was initially an all white organization, as Semites are Caucasian, which is to say they are "white" in complexion.
essay is 20 years too late
There is no precipice to step back from. We are hovering over an abyss and it is bottomless.
Kinda like this: http://nationalpostcomment.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/wile-coyote.jpg
This essay also reminds me of the many, many cases of violent rehtoric I've read in CD comments over the last year or so.
Yes, where have all those pro-violence rats scattered off to? They'll wait it out and then sleaze back here when the heat cools. It's got to be awkward for them when they see their dreams realized by their violent counterparts on the right. Then again it is the weekend, and since most of them are FBI agents they're probably home watching ball games.
The situations are not analogous, but we both know you don't do conversation.
So....here's your chance to sell me on the error of my analysis. What's your plan? Sell me on your plan and how you hope to accomplish your unnamed goals and I'll sign up if your persuasive enough. Can you do that?
One other thing: for someone who excoriates the tin-foilers on their assumption of Israeli shenanigans (and rightfully so), don;'t you find it odd that you draw equally absurd conclusions about those who disagree with you as all being, on various days, CIA, FBI, NSA, or EPA agents? Just an observation.
Hopefully you can enlighten me at your convenience. I'd like to hear your actual plan.
Bueller? Bueller?
I guess I would be one of those 'pro-violence rats' you're referring to. I don't condone any aggression against anyone who hasn't aggressed against me. That being said, I don't need a history book to show me just how this government has aggressed against me and my people (blacks) so, if you don't like the fact that I desire to defend myself and my folk against those who would destroy me and mine, fuck you. Even a mother squirrel would fight to the death to defend her children. This man was scum and no revolutionary. He's a racist xenophobe who was simply too cowardly to do anything other than kill a bunch of kids to show his 'power'.
Drudge! Drudge! Yes, fine extreme right wing yellow journalism from which to base your political life! No thanks, Medmedude! Juan Cole often makes good sense (except where he has flipped out concerning Libya and Gaddhafi). He does here, above, in this article.
and, of course, Juan Cole was an initial supporter of GW Bush's invasion of Iraq. How he made that mistake is beyond me. I lost a bit of respect for his political opinions and analyses.
"Juan Cole was an initial supporter of GW Bush's invasion of Iraq", if I check this and it turns out to be true, for me it's goodbye Juan Cole
and yes he did, the swine, when push came to shove, he did
One thing to note, "When Extremism Learns to Blow Things Up" the country moves further to the right and not the left.
What happened to Chile on September 11, 1973 is happening to US. A good book on the subject: "A Nation of Enemies: Chile Under Pinochet," by Arturo Valensuela. Half of Chile hated the other half and everyone lost in the end. The animosity was used as cover while Pinochet and his gang robbed the country.
Hitler used hate to bring his Third Reich to power. Hitler recruited extremists, thugs and dupes but had no place for them in his grand design. The extremists were vehicles used and the dangerous ones discarded on the "Night of the Long Knives."
Rupert Murdoch and the Koch Brothers are modern day hatemongers using dimwitted tea baggers as soldiers to advance their agenda. They also use guns, gays, God and guacamole to drive public opinion. The dimwitted have no place in their grand design either. The dimwitted are just too dimwitted to get it.
Don't feel too sanctimonious about 'the left'. Most voting (D)s are not news junkies, are not politically aware and have never read sites like CD. They have never been exposed to the idea that Obama is a 'rightie' and you would never convince them. It's all those damned (R)s. (D)s are just as naive as (R)s and combined make up probably 90% of the voting public. We are all being used and have been for years.
Did Cole mean to say only 4 million Turks were muslim?
"or the 4 million in Turkey (5 percent of the population)"
I think he meant Germany.
A terrible thing for the people of Norway, and something I can barely imagine other than in an abstract manner. I grieve with the families of the victims...
That being said, there are disturbing observations to be made if one looks beyond the obvious. Breivik is definitely pathological, but no more so than our leaders and motivators who bomb innocent people from afar in other lands. The massacre in Norway is only startling to many in the West because that sort of thing shouldn't happen HERE... it should be directed to 'others' elsewhere. Again, my sincere condolences to the people of Norway, regardless...
Very few people who see themselves as beholden to tradition-- whether or not they are extreme right-- would allow that most of the violence in the world comes from reactionary forces IN ANTICIPATION of harm from outside. In this sense, the so-called resistors are always "more sinned against than sinning".
No one can fail to see the atrocity of this incident... and yet few Westerners would question Obama's Nobel Peace prize... or the claims that Israel is a genuine egalitarian democracy. Living in a topsy turvy world can be very disturbing indeed.
This attack in Norway reminds me of operation Cast Lead. In particular when the Israeli's bombed the police headquarters in Gaza to decapitate leadership. It also reminds me of settler violence against both Palestinians and the International Solidarity Movement. It reminds me of last years Gaza relief flotilla and the way the Israeli commando's used head shots to finish off their wounded and bound prisoners. Check out whatreallyhappened.com for more details on this shooting that are not making into the controlled media.
Getting really sick of all the crap being posted here implying Israel is behind what went on in Norway. This was indisputably a violent attack on the left by a Norwegian rightwing extremist. God knows the Israeli right have earned the contempt in which they are held around the world, but in this instance they simply were obviously not involved.
Haven't got up to speed? To many CDers, Israel is behind EVERYTHING much the same way that John Birchers saw "Commies" under every rock.
Everything is or definitely might be a Mossad operation.
And what Israel doesn't do , MEN do. It's all every man's fault. Except men of other races, then they are just copying the bad behaviour of white men. Same goes for women.
Please read more carefully before making insinuations. Cascadian did not imply that Israel is BEHIND the Oslo massacre. I took the comment to mean that the violent way in which the trapped victims on the island were killed reminded him/her of Cast Lead, where over a thousand innocent, unarmed people, locked within the confines of high walls were mercilessly massacred by heavily armed IDF soldiers. Israel slaughtered over 1,400 people, including 350 children. Israel itself lost around 10 or 13 soldiers, some from by "friendly" fire. Massacres seem to be just fine for many people, as long as the perpetrator is a violent super power. What an example to emulate, eh?

Propaganda spin lead many Americans to believe in short wars, waged with little cost, paid for by our victory, and improving life for ourselves and our defeated enemy. As the popular phrase goes... "How's that working out for you?" Has the past decade of endless war paid for itself? Are you safer than before? Do the citizens of Iraq, Afghanistan, their neighbors in Iran, or Allies in Palestine praise our efforts and report great strides in their economy, their health care, personal freedom and relationships with us? How much longer will it take to attain these goals? Perhaps you question if their might have been a better way, and if we should look for a new path going forward. When our wars move beyond self defense against an aggressive neighbor, and/or the defense of a nation at risk to expanding attacks against those who hold ideas different than our own, understand it is inevitable that the conflict will come home. Already our nation has fallen into paralysis with our dysfunctional political debate. The hardening of this debate will bring the war home. Families are divided, neighborhoods are divided, your co-workers are divided. Who will win this war you dare not lose, victory is an illusion and impossible. Pray and grieve with the citizens of Norway as the search for a way through this grief which supports the victims, defends the innocent, brings the guilty to justice, and resists the call to wage wars without clear enemy or danger.
Welcome to the New Fascist Century. Just like 1911. Groundhog day again.
Christianity is traced back to the life of Jesus of Nazareth, who was a pacifist. Anyone is free to kill people in Jesus's name. Jesus Himself is not around to refute such yahoos, although His words, "Love your enemies", probably meant that you shouldn't kill them.
If your Church has lots of war-worship as opposed to Jesus-worship, good luck with sorting out your own conscience. Also, if your Church has lots of rich-worship, as opposed to the Bible's constant, persistent affirmation of the poor, good luck there too.
What Cole ignores again as usual is how it's only muslims/islamists that perpetrate terrorism when such is usually NOT the case, as Greenwald's column on the matter proves beyond doubt.
Since the end of WW2, the leading global terrorists are US presidents, and Obama is no different. When the supposed historian Juan Cole finally admits and publishes that fact on his blog, I'll again call him a credible expert.
OTHERS
The suspect has a crusade against others. Others can often
be blacks, hispannics, "illegal" immigrants (with no understanding
of the role of US business and government in their exodus), Muslims,
Irish, Italians Native Americans. The list goes on.
I agree with many that those in the "Tea Party" in the US are responding
to their anger and while I abhor the results, I find no
reason to lump all those on the right together .
While I cannot speak for activist Noam Chomsky, I have sensed in some
of his writings that we need a more profound understanding of the
anger. That is no absolution.
It requires those of us who are critical not to play so easily into
the quick categories of themass media PR.
(After all, doing this was what "made" Tea Party meetings daily news
while hundreds of meetings in almost all 49 states in favor of single
payer health care were invisible in the media.)

Fuck you with your kudos. Hopefully some day you'll be in the wrong place when one or more "men of actions" decide to make a statement.
“This is an impressive crowd -- the haves and the have mores. Some people call you the elite -- I call you Al Qaeda.”
I have been reading more and more about our evolutionary history and if you ask me, we are doomed. I bring up our evolution, because I am certain, that the only way for us to have a planet left to live on, is to go back to some, some of our more natural methods or lifestyles. Hunter gathering, or small subsistance farming...don't laugh or be mad at me.. okay, this is extreme, but we have to stop the murder of our planet somehow. How we get there, without loosing people in the process, is the question. It would take a very different approach, than what we are seeing the powers that be, taking at this point in our evolution.
You see, people like this young man, whose ideology is based on the assumption that HE has a right to make money, more money and more, any way he sees fit, no matter how it affects any one or the earth, is OUR biggest problem. I read and heard about his focus on making money and how he is into the "free market" etc. It seems to me that the problems that the world is facing, here in the US and in European countries, in the Middle East, all deal with the split between those who believe and worship "money making" and those who don't.
The extreme captitalist is the earth's biggest problem. Those in power with the money, do realize that the game is up. If they do not put in place the "right kind of policies and laws, they will loose that power. They know that with the coming effects of climate change and peak oil, the wealth will have to be redistributed. The powers that be will NOT live in equal status with the rest of the masses. Can you imagine one of them having to clean their own toilet? How about this, what if they had to grow their own food or could not drive a luxury car, or fly their leer jet to some vacation island. They will not give up their luxuries and definitely will not give up their power over labor. They would rather have slaves and are more or less thinking along those lines. I mean, they really already have slaves, working away in sweat shop around the world, while they make millions and billions off them.
the earth cannot afford this type of thinking anymore. But they know this. They have concluded that not everyone will survive the coming chaos that is already stirring. The speed with which the chaos is occurring will increase by the month, the year until it has reached a whipping torrent and anyone not hold up in a walled off gated community with a black water type guard protecting that gate, will parish. It is evident in Somalia as I right, soon it will be even more evident right here in the US. With many suffering from "natural disasters" (man made form climate change), it won't take long before the few deaths here and there from these, increase before our eyes. People dying from no health care, not enough food, many things that we can't even foresee yet.
Maybe I sound like some crazed conspiracy theorist and this is my own take on the events as I see them. I just can't help it when I see how certain factions in our world, our country are manuevering into position.... positions that in the past would have screamed out as acceptable. Like Bachman and others, wanting to get rid of minimum wage. Like the govenor in one of the New England states, passing a law to allow teens to work an extra two hours a night AT LOWER THAN NOW FED MINIMUM, 5.50 and hr..... AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL THE SUPREME COURT'S DECISIONS OF LATE, GIVING MORE AND MORE POWER TO CORPS...
LET'S NOT SIT BACK AND LET THEM SHOVE US ASIDE WHILE THEY HOARD ALL THE POWER AND GOODS(NOT JUST MONEY)... They will be more prepared if we let them, to survive in a messy world in which living will be a daily competitive, survial show like existance.
WE MUST RISE UP AND NOT LET THEM GET INTO POSITION. hIT THE STREETS....
Good constructive comment and not at all ironic in relation to the content of the original article. I especially liked your use of capital letters.
Backlash against immigrants is commonly attributed to religious, racial, traditional, and economic reasons, but exclude the environmental pressures from overpopulation, wealth and power concentration and invasions over depleting global resources in the native countries of these environmental refugees. Problems that fuel the rise of conservatism and extremism in the developed countries with good government that ironically attract immigrants in the first place
This nut case is a lot like the United States, Great Britain, etc., seeing only violence and death as a solution to problems. Nothing new in this article that we haven't seen all over the world in the last 15 years. If governments think blowing things up is the best way to deal with complex things, why would anyone question it? This guy just did what the leadership of the Western world does on a daily basis.
You're a nut case, too. Your use of the word "only" gives you away.
Yeah, just keep focused: it is a class war, stupid.
When the rich give up most of their money to the social good, we can have a truce.
In the wake of the Gabrielle Gifford shooting there was a lot of hollow talk about the temperature and civility of public discourse but the undertakings to do better were forgotten long before Gifford got out of hospital.
It’s only a matter of time until another tinfoil-hat wearing, Travis Bickle in the making here is finally inflamed sufficiently by poisonous talk-back hooch to start blasting again. We can only hope that he doesn’t do as much damage as that odious moron did in Norway. Of course when it does happen just wait for the two minutes of crocodile tears from the choristers of hate before they start canting on about free speech. O Reilly and Beck should be free to say what they want I believe but on a milk crate on street corners not on national TV stations that wish to keep blood off their hands. But of course, if it bleeds it leads, right Rupert?
