Don't Fix The Economy - Change It
Sticking with the model that is driving us toward ecological catastrophe will eventually kill us
Amid the discordant clash of solutions being served up to address the global financial crisis, a common refrain can be heard: Most global leaders and their economic advisers key their policy prescriptions to "sustained economic growth." The prevailing debate is how to get there most quickly. In Canada, how this debate plays out could bring down the government in a matter of weeks.
Unfortunately, it is the wrong debate. Neither the Conservative minority nor the opposition has proposed anything that will set Canada on a long-term path toward the kind of economy that will both provide for the well-being of Canadians and enhance and preserve the ecological community of which people are but one dependent part.
All eyes may now be on the kind of fiscal budget the Conservatives might produce next year, but a more essential budget also demands urgent attention: the global ecological budget. The financial crisis has brought into sharp focus the need to fundamentally change, not merely repair or rebuild, our economy. Because, quite simply, sticking with an economic model that is driving toward ecological catastrophe will kill us. So, it is essential to address the financial and ecological crises together.
The ecological budget, on which all life and, consequently, the human economy depends, is already in dramatic deficit. Why is this budget ultimately more important than the fiscal budget? Sept. 23, 2008, was Earth Overshoot Day. The period after Sept. 23 represents the time the human population causes an ecological deficit, using up the Earth faster than it can regenerate.
Every year, Earth Overshoot Day comes earlier. This moving date tells the story of a global environment rapidly losing its ability to support life: accelerating climate change; the loss of species and habitats; declining fisheries; the proliferation of ocean dead zones; diminishing freshwater resources; and more. Ecological overshoot is climate change on steroids.
Here are six steps we can take toward a truly balanced budget that will allow Canadians, and all people on Earth, to live fulfilling, healthy, yet more ecologically compatible, lives.
- Recognize that the economy is part of the biosphere. A comprehensive economic plan must be based on the scientific fact that the global economy is a subsidiary of the natural order. Economic policies should be attuned to the limited capacity of Earth's biosphere to provide for humans and other life and to assimilate their waste. Photosynthesis and sunlight are as essential to the framework for economic budgets and expenditures as the laws of supply and demand.
- Acknowledge that we need new institutions. An economic renewal tailored to the 21st century would establish institutions committed to fitting the human economy to Earth's limited life-support capacity. Canada, with its token efforts to address climate change, is far off the track. We need something like the central reserve banks, but which look after shares of the Earth's ecological capacity, not just interest rates and the money supply. Money should be recognized as a social licence to use part of Earth's life-support capacity. Some functions of governance would have to operate at a global level, through a federation modelled perhaps on the European Union, with enforceable laws designed to assure that individual nations don't overrun Earth's limits. The rules for the developed countries that are responsible for the current ecological crisis should be different from those for developing ones.
- Acknowledge that unlimited growth on a finite planet makes no sense. Most people wrongly believe that unlimited growth and wealth accumulation are the "natural laws" of the economy - inviolable, even though together they undermine the Earth's ecological and social systems. We face a moral challenge: bring the global economy into a right relationship with the planet and its human and non-human inhabitants or suffer the increasing destruction of Earth's finite life-support systems and social structures. Growth in consumption is a nonsensical response to the sharp decline in Earth's biophysical systems that is caused by overconsumption. Our new ecological and climate reality demands new ways to live within the means of the Earth.
- Fairness matters. A "right" human-Earth relationship would recognize humans as part of an interdependent web of life on a finite planet. The economy must recognize the rights of the human poor and of millions of other species to their place in the sun. In a world awash in money, addressing poverty only with growth reflects a tragic lack of moral imagination. Indeed, in pushing for more "free" trade as it is currently understood, Canada would entrench an ongoing addiction to consumption, pursued in a manner that often ravages the bio-productivity of developing countries.
- Expand the discussion. The new knowledge that will forever mark this period in human history is the overwhelming scientific evidence that we are overconsuming the planet and accelerating toward ecological catastrophe. The short-term approaches of most ministers of finance and professional economists don't account for how the planet works, or even that the economy exists on a finite planet. Scientists morally committed to protecting the global commons and researching ecological limits to the global economy need much more funding and influence in policy-making.
- Look beyond technological fixes. Bold new leadership is needed that will focus on all four policy "theatres" relevant to human ecological impact and provide the moral footing that will lead people, individually and collectively, to choose lifestyles with radically lower impact. The four policy variables are: technology; population; wealth and consumption; and morals and customs. These factors should together shape Parliament's rethinking of the current economic system. Technology can increase efficiency of energy and resources use, yet it is overemphasized as a solution. Pushing technological solutions like hydrogen cars and genetically modified agriculture is much easier politically than asking people to consume less or have fewer children. Unfortunately, technology alone cannot solve the ecological crisis. For one thing, efficiency gains often lead to greater, not lower, consumption. An example is the squandering of Quebec's underpriced hydroelectric power.
Investments in new "green" technology need to be coupled to a regulatory structure that ensures that efficiency does not result in more impact, along with massive investment in creating or restoring natural systems that build bioproductivity. Economic policy must promote not more affluence as currently defined, but more sufficiency for all Canadians - so that all may live with self-respect, without overconsumption.
Perhaps most difficult to come to grips with is that Canada is an overpopulated country - if you compare the individual impact of each Canadian with what the Earth can withstand. We should escape from the current treadmill that considers more people necessary for more growth.
Lastly, we must greatly increase investment in educational and civic institutions that teach that we are not "consumers," but citizens of the Earth, and guardians of life's prospect on a small, beautiful and finite planet.- Posted in

Republicans, every last one, plus a majority of Democrats, perhaps even Obama himself, will say that talk like the above comes from the deluded minds of idealists and their fellow travelers . . . greenos, replacing the pinkos of old. Shrinking violets, pussies, cowards, milktoasts, pansies, tippy-toes and others politically and economically light on their feet. Standing grinningly behind these Republicans and Democrats, perhaps even Obama himself, will be the same army of strutting, phony tough guys, thieves and grasping MoFo's who have shoved us into the corner where we are now. Since no one is clairvoyant, no one can say we won't recover from the calamities of the last eight years, learn from them and be better off. But no one can deny that the United States has been in decline for at least forty years and the last eight have been akin to driving a nearly empty clunker into a Shellgame gas station, putting two gallons of 100 octane gas in the tank, then roaring away like there's no tomorrow, into the tomorrow where there is no tomorrow.
You said it! Peter G. Brown and Geoffrey Garver, and you too, Mordecai, with the kind of re-education that creates and changes awareness in the very young on up, to wit, "that we are not "consumers," but citizens of the Earth, and guardians of life's prospect on a small, beautiful and finite planet."

Don't Fix The Economy - it's only being used to inflict American hegemony on the world.
If you really believe that -- and I don't doubt that you do -- then you should have campaigned for McCain/Palin.
We not only need to change our economy, we need to change the way we look at ourselves and and our place on Earth. There are just too many of us. We are destroying paradise. We must limit our numbers.
The change needed in our economy is one of fair taxes. The extremely wealthy are not taxed according to their ability to pay. It is obscene to have some people with more than they need while others are in dire need of food, clothing and shelter. We must get over our fixation with our sense of independence. We are not independent at all. We require community. Our government should be the means by which we support community and take care of the needs of all the people and the environment. The hell with number one!! It is this kind of thinking that has gotten us to the point of collapse---our economy, our government and our planet.
The riches of the earth must be shared by all the life on our planet. Human beings are not the only life that counts!!
We need to learn to care and share. And we don't have lots of time to come to this realization.
Luddite rants notwithstanding, the human race has no choice but to either keep developing its standard of living, or to perish.
Whatzat??? Define "standard of living".
While you're at it, define "Luddite" and "Luddite rant" so that we can identify them.
Huh?
The whole problem is that this is all based on scientific evidence rather than scientific fact. When you tell people about climate change and attribute it to man, they ask for proof and there is none, just scientific opinion.
kloro
If folks refuse to agree with opinions, its hard to think of them as Luddites and the human race has plenty of choices. Thats problem #2
In the world of Common Dreams lies do not become true no matter how many times you repeat them.

Climate change at the poles IS man-made
Scientists refute sceptics by proving that human activity has left its mark on the Arctic and Antarctic
Changes to the climate due to human activity can now be detected on every continent, following a study showing that temperature rises in the Antarctic as well as the Arctic are the result of man-made emissions of greenhouse gases.
It is the first time scientists have been able to prove the link between the temperature changes in both polar regions are down to human activity and it also undermines climate sceptics who believe the warming trend seen in the Arctic in recent decades is part of the climate's natural variability.
The findings contradict the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which said that Antarctica was the only continent where the human impact on the climate had not been observed.
The new study shows that Antarctica has been caught up in the changes to the global climate over the past 60 years and that this warming cannot be attributed to natural variations.
Using four computer models and data from dozens of weather stations sited around both the North and South Poles, the study conclusively shows that humans are responsible for the significant increases in temperatures observed in the Arctic and the Antarctic over the past half century.
"We're able for the first time to directly attribute warming in both the Arctic and the Antarctic to human influences on the climate," said Nathan Gillett of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, who led the study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

"In the world of Common Dreams lies do not become true no matter how many times you repeat them"
I would certainly agree with you and wishful thinking doesn't make a fact. Nor does attribution or computer models.
"Scientific facts are generally believed to be independent from the observer in that no matter which scientist observes a phenomenon, all will reach the same necessary conclusion"
You can be assured that nothing these guys did fit this definition or any other accepted model of scientific fact.
So no matter how many times the lie that climate change, as a scientific fact, is man made it won't become so.
Many scientists agree it is, many others dispute it because it is not scientifically proven to be a fact.
If you wait for proof then it will be too late. Why take a chance on destroying the world?
Change it...very true...
Please read Riane Eisler's work: Real Wealth of Nations...creating a caring economics. She concurs that we have to change our economic system and offers a Full spectrum economy. This deals with the realities of our changing times and a need to measure our economy beyond the production/consumption/profits to one that is measured based on caring for humans and the planet.
To achieve a Full spectrum economy, we will shift from an economy which is 70% on consumption--yet not sustainable to one that broadens what we measure and include in our economy--this means adding 3 new sectors to the current 3 sectors we're accustomed to--
Current sectors: markets, government, illegal activities (a big part of the consumer economy!)
New sectors--household, unpaid volunteer and natural (true cost accounting and ecologically tapping into resources in sustainable ways.)
In the US 96 million jobs are tied to the consumer economy....To replace these, the household sector--investing in human infrastructure/care for children, adults and elderly--offers a truly vibrant opportunity to finally pay for the 'caring' work that has been invisible for so long (and valued at $135,000 a year!). It could 'employ' upwards of 34 million people--and would sponsor many new industries around more caring work--supporting the arts, music, education, health care etc. This would be the start of a new, Full Spectrum economy.
Buckminster Fuller said: "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." A Full Spectrum Economy is a new model....
Ann@partnershipway.org
The earth will not live forever, nor will the sun. Man must evolve and develop so as to be able to travel to other worlds, or ultimately the species must perish.
Scientists rarely agree on anything. Science is by it's nature one based on skepticism. Theories can not be proven, but are disprovable, so skepticism is necessary. However, skepticism is discouraged when it comes to mans role in climate change, and most of the funding that is provided goes to promote the idea that man is responsible for most of it, since there are political and economic interests at work to sell this.
Even Big Oil is no longer funding skepticism, and their funding paled in comparison with overall funding, and the scientists found it hard to get their papers published by the Journals which are owned by those having an interest in feeding the man made climate change idea. Interlocking directorships with banking and other industries and their control on virtually all energy makes green energy and carbon trading a win win for them, especially if you believe in peak oil. If their product is going to run out anyways, why would they not want to get into controlling the alternatives.
All of the projections made for the future are based on climate models which did not predict the lack of warming over the past decade. They are flawed mainly because we only have 30-60 years of accurate data, which is barely 1 small climate cycle of warming and and cooling the uncertainty over conditions in past climate change.
And even among those better models and scientists with integrity, the dooms day crowd is a small minority of scientists, There is no consensus that catastrophic climate change will occur.
Recently 650 international scientists dissented from the IPCC latest report.
http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.Blogs&ContentRecord_id=2158072e-802a-23ad-45f0-274616db87e6
This number is 12 times more than the UN scietists who sold the report, a few dozen.
If anything, the warming we have experienced and that which may occur in the next century have made and will make this world a greener planet. Warmth and CO2 are good for plants. Climate is always changing, and for every area that may experience adverse affects, others will experience good effects.
Whats lacking in all these reports is planning for climate change in the event it is inevitable. For example, if drought is being predicted in the southwest, why not improve our system for storing and transporting water, even desalination plants.
Why is anyone is still buying the Inhofe/Morano (Limbaugh-guy) endlessly recycled and dishonest trash?
It's the same people who try to prove that most scientists don't believe in evolution. Standard Republican pap.
There is already some early stuff about the "report". Google Inhofe 650 to see what our Swift Boating pals are trying to pull over this time.
Evidence for man-made global warming is inconclusive. However if we wait for proof it would be too late. Besides, it doesn't cost that much to take effective action. Why take a chance?

MiMiCcS is right on target. After you read the link below, you will no longer wonder why the price of oil dropped so dramatically in just a couple of weeks.
http://www.energyandcapital.com/report/big-oils-buyback/141
You are underestimating the stupidity and resistance to change of the average big company executive. How do I know? My uncle was a big time steel CEO and you should here his stories.
Also, if big oil wanted to raise capital to invest in green technology they would be selling their own stock, not buying it.
"Also, if big oil wanted to raise capital to invest in green technology they would be selling their own stock, not buying it."
Einstein: Get with the program!
They are currently buying-up all the oil stock they can at some of the lowest prices we will ever see again in our lives. We are now at a point where the cost to explore and extract oil is far greater than the price we are paying at the pumps. Do you think these oil CEOs don't know that the price is going to skyrocket again once the G-8 starts spending trillions of dollars on green technology and upgrading infrastructures? How in hell do you think they'll accomplish this without oil?
Here's what the report said: "Energy is this century's first great bull market. Regardless of what tech stocks do, or if housing remains in the tank for years, the energy sector will outperform everything and make money for its investors."
Meanwhile, they'll be investing much of their oil profits in green technology to maintain control after the oil is used up. It may take 30 years or more, but these ruthless, corporate empires are positioning themselves for the future. Make no mistake about that.
since the thrust of the article is about "CHANGE THE ECONOMY":
Questions that always have been so obvious but suppressed by entrenched POWER , PROFIT interests , once again keep rearing up:
and NOW the PLANET itself is groaning and giving warnings:
but the questions:
WHICH ECONOMIC SYSTEM is the MOTHER of the very things that have LED to the RAPE and CONSUMING of the Planet, tantamount to slowly murdering your own Mother?
CAPITALISM:
"expand the economy, find NEW markets, CONQUER the MARKETS, OPEN UP NEW markets , SELL., SELL, CONSUME, PRODUCE, OVER_PRODUCE, DRIVE DOWN costs, CUT CORNERS, FORCE the planet to OBEY PROFIT motives,
there is no alternative"..........
well -- there is -- CONTINUE WITH CAPITALISM and DIE as we all surely shall from the poison spewed out by CAPITALIST Profiteering .
in capitalism,...the BOTTOM line is:
"innovation, technology, scientific discoveries, comforts, security, etc. etc. etc. "
are ALL SUBJECT to ONE and ONLY ONE THING:
PROFITMAKING above ANY other consideration.
HUMAN LIFE is UNimportant except as "markets" and "cheap labor" .
the EARTH is UNimportant except as a source of PROFITEERING.
ONLY PROFIT and POWER is important. THAT is the essence of capitalism.
all of the innovations or discoveries are important ONLY as a source of PROFIT. -- rather than as a collective effort , collective sharing for the GOOD of society AND the planet..
CAPITALISM is EVIL, PURe, UNADULTERATED EVIL.
that's......about it. very simple.
it has NO respect for our Mother Earth , nor for Human beings, nor for LIFE itself. it only Glorifies POWER and MONEY for their own sake - and as a way for the principal adherents who "lead" nations and societies in this economic model to MAINTAIN and "expand" their power and profit
as their only way, banal way, to FEEL IMPORTANT.
it boils down to a VERY JUVENILE characteristic.
imagine that? to FEEL IMPORTANT _- one HAS to be surrounded by so much WEALTH, RICHES< MATERIAL GOODS, and feel POWERFUL over others, the more the better because of HOW one can "master the highways and byways of" CAPITALISM as its tool?
what a LOW kind of mentality in reality.
GROW UP people. GROW UP.
CAPITALISM KILLS
it kills human beings and it kills species and kills the planet.
it is ANTI life and ANTI JOY, and ANTI decency.
it is NOTHING but the most craven invention of SOME misguided soulds with the power to force it on everyone else AND the planet.
these people should be put on a spaceship and sent to PLUTO and there they can find "markets" all they want and KEEP all the minerals and diamonds and make paintings of themselves all they want and feel "IMPORTANT".
just DON"T involve the REST of US in the world who have a business of being at ONE with our Beloved Mother Earth, whose land and riches and what our labor on it can't be , and should NEVER be, DEBASED by the IDEA, the VERY idea of "profit" which is the ONLY reason for existence of CAPITALISM.
And Those that STILL try and WILL continue to try to DEFEND IT - or "fix it" - are only showing that THEY have been SWALLOWED UP by the DOGMA of PROFIT - where the earth NEVER belonged to any in order to make a PROFIT FROM , whether by our labor and its collective "residue" and surplus, or into the hands of a few in power and money through social insitutions -- most egregiously and cravenly exhibited BY CAPITALISM . they are only showing that they STILL believe in the ONLY THING that is really left in them when all is said and done:
what LITTLE ACTUAL SELF_RESPECT they retain for what they IMAGINE Capitalism GIVES THEM in their sense of being "worthy" or "important".
what a waste of human potential capitalism REALLY is.
and what a WASTEFUL RAPINE institution it is towards our own Mother Earth!
and let's make a CORRECTION.
CAPITALISM is NOT the system , that by ITSELF produces useful, benevolent innovations and discoveries.
HUMAN ingenuity and creativity and a sense of WONDER at our life around us IS what produces such things.
CAPITALISM is ONLY a system that EXPLOITS such things for ITS PROFITEERING motives AND THEN , ONLY INCIDENTALLY spreads them BECAUSE of its profiteering motives --
but ULTIMATELY WILL TWIST THEM and CORRUPT THEM (wars, BOMBS, killing machines, satellites to SPY, to have a "race" in arms wars, to deliver MAPS to soldiers to KILL for PROFIT and MONEy and POWER for those that send them to kill and invade and conquer and PILLAGE continents and the EARTH ).
THAT IS THE ONLY FUNCTION of capitalism.
it is NOTHING ELSE BUT A CORRUPTING ideology.
it corrupts human beings, it corrupts discoveries, it corrupts what the earth has given us for FREE for ALL to share and NOT to "create wealth" for the few at the expense of the many AND the Mother Earth!
Capitalism is the Vehicle of VAMPIRES. who will suck blook of all living things until there is none left but dry bones and dead stone and dust.
and all that , because people who adhere and promote it are , underneath -- FULLY AWARE that they are NO BETTER nor more PRECIOUS than any other living creature or fellow human being and therefore must have "other means" to experience something SO JUVENILE and so CHILDISH --
TO FEEL IMPORTANT!!!!
what a laughably OBSCENE thing it is.
A huge problem with the American psyche is that people believe that 'growth' is synonymous with 'progress'. In reality a countries GDP is not an indicator of whether its citizens are bettering their quality of life. In fact there is ample evidence that economic growth benefits a small minority at the expense of the majority in most scenarios. The U.S. is a prime example of this.
The War on Drugs or Terror trumps the War on Poverty. Corporate welfare instead of welfare for the disadvantaged is far more socially acceptable. Issues like universal healthcare, public housing, the building of public transit or global warming are routinely discarded by our government and the corporate state as evil egalitarian fantasies while we sit idly by and watch the Big Brother run roughshod over the public interest.
"Managing without Growth" by Peter Victor is one book that deals with this concept of replacing the annual GDP reports, stock market fluctuations and retail sales quarterlies with a new model that instead measures the quality of life its citizen’s experience. Clean water and air, food on the table, security, a collective and shared responsibility towards each other, a roof over our heads, a gentler and kinder society are better yardsticks than a good bull run on Wall street.
But Americans are subjected to a mass campaign of sophisticated misinformation to keep us off the scent of the villain. Corporate media infiltrates every tier of our lives from newspapers, TV and radio right down to our school classrooms. We are nursed from childhood to believe that bigger is better, more is good and that technology can solve all of our problems. To send an alternative message to the public is virtually impossible as the public interest does not possess the deep pockets of the ideologically bankrupt (but financially obscene!) sponsors of this current predicament.
To finally understand the roots of this controlled but socially destructive path, only seems to accentuate the futility of reversing the status quo.
this is because of the partnership of american MYTHS with CAPITALISM -- that collude to produce a mentality NO DIFFERENT from that which led to the "conquest" of "the west" - of opening up lands to EXPLOIT . and it began with the atrocities against the Native Indians and THEIR thousands of years of living at one with the earth -- and living in AWE of its wonders and dangers and challenges and beauty.
HOW is it - for example: that the old civilizations that have continued for thousands of years, whatever the WEST thinks of their "backwardness" - such as INDIA and CHINA -- have NOT "expanded" beyond their thousands of years of boreders? they remained the civilizations they were without UNDUE disregard for the earth.
in the space of a MERE less than 300 hundred years -- what has the american SYSTEM of ECONOMICS wrought? granted that technology has greatly accelerated its POISONOUS effects BY TWISTING what COULD and SHOULD have been beneficient, benevolent, SOCIAL IST - use of advances to PRESERVE rather than EXPLOIT what WE HAVE collectively as our legacy from our own mother earth? and to SHARE with others and other lands what THEY don't have from the mother earth and then RESPECTFULLY accept from THEM what THEY can offer -- WITHOUT the PRINCIPLE of "getting one OVEr the OTHER" for personal profit in order to feel "successful and important?"
it has brought US not just to global economic COLLAPSE after RULING the world with ITS institutionns and forcing all countries to FUNCTION WITHIN its CLUTCHES or ELSE destroy or punish them or isolate them -- it has already brought us to the points of NO RETURN on our own Mother Earth!
and WE and the generations after us and other creatures will PAY for the SINS of capitalism and capitalist fomentors!
it should be REMOVED from the face of the planet and human civilization.
teddy, your excessive use of CAPS make your posts difficult to read. I doubt if it's just me, it's kind of understood that you need to use discretion with that sort of thing.
I'll second Jake, teddy. I want to look at your postings, but CAPS make it tough and with so much to read anyway... That kind of stuff gave character to many of the old 19th century periodicals and later modernist manifestos, but somehow it doesn't work on the internet...for me anyway.
I have to agree. I like reading your postings but the overuse of caps make them difficult to read, and because of that I often skip your messages. Sorry to "pile on". I would look forward to reading your comments without all the caps. OCCASIONAL use to emphasize a point is fine.

Capitalism insists it must use up more planet every year than it did the year before. Increase the gdp. Those of us who want to save the Earth with a sustainable economy know this is suicidal. The math is so simple you don't even need arithmetic to do it. Capitalism demands infinite resources, but our planet is finite. So capital can no longer have its stupid, blind, greedy, selfish way. The attempt to do so has brought us way too close to extinction. It must end, or our grandchildren will no longer have a planet to live on.

"Acknowledge that unlimited growth on a finite planet makes no sense. Most people wrongly believe that unlimited growth and wealth accumulation are the "natural laws" of the economy - inviolable, even though together they undermine the Earth's ecological and social systems. "
Most people may believe in unlimited growth, thanks to the corporate opinion-makers of the ruling crass who want to keep us in wage slavery, hoping to become millionaires, and as a way to deflect attention from the basic problem of incredibly skewed wealth distribution.
"Most people wrongly believe that unlimited growth and wealth accumulation are the "natural laws" of the economy - inviolable, even though together they undermine the Earth's ecological and social systems. "
I don't believe there are any natural laws to our economy. Its like any other system...without the proper controls it gets out of hand.
Unlimited growth in anything is bad, but with climate change and the problems its bringing, especially in water tables, we'd better get things in better order.
Unawareness or ignorance of the natural 'laws' that govern things does not mean there are no governing natural laws. In this case, ignorance of the law (if there be such a law) will not absolve one from its consequences. And natural law (if it exists)is constructed for the good of all, unlike man-make laws, which benefit only the few.

the new york times article on german "passive houses" - costing 5-7 percent more than traditional abodes to build and taking energy from the sun, keeping the heat for water boiling, etc.. for the amount of energy it takes for a hair dryer .....
NO furnaces needed. the "house adjusts itself" .
but in the USA -- the device that converts recycled heat (including from the bodies of people living there) is considered "not up to green standards".........
how BACKWARD can the world's richest and most powerful nation can be in comparison?
i guess this is partly a result of decades , even 2 centuries of thinking that the USA is the :"leader" in everything and knows what's best.........

heck -- even the IGLOOS of the eskimos who had no technology to speak much of conserved heat and insulation better at less cost....even the mud houses of more "primitive" cultures are worth more in efficiency and usefulness for the amount of "spending" they needed than the overconsumptive US households always wanting more , more, more....decade after decade after decade......
ECONOMIC TSUNAMI: BUSH’S LEGACY !
Farhat Maquami
IN the past few months after initial denial we are being told that we are officially in Recession. Then, we suddenly without having an economic theory start throwing money at all direction to “Bail-out” the Bankers, Wall Street Gamblers, and may become the Biggest TARP in human history to save every Capitalist, Financier, Investors, Real state Gamblers and failing manufacturer. Obviously the TARP means the Government is now overtly would become an instrument of ruling class. We fought socialism in the Cold War, advocated Free Market Economy so now our government become the prime advocate of Socialism for the Rich.
What defeated Communism was not Reagan or Reaganomics but the stupidity of Russian communism to build an Empire and then devoting their resources to free the Colonial world from their masters. Internationalism not nationalism was the Communist Logo. Helping to Liberate the Third World from the Yoke of the antiquated imperialism finally brought the undoing of Communism and Socialism, not the Free Market as Conservatives made us believe. Our Bankers, financiers turned Marxism on its head and changed “internationalism” to “Globalization” ideology and start advocating it as the best way to control the World. Indeed “Globalization” become the nemesis of Capitalism!
That is why throwing Public money, like a drunken sailor, at Bankers, owners of means of production and more militarism to save the empire would make the matter worse. We must change our frame of reference, our perspective and our way of life to survive this Economic Tsunami.
The problem is not what is being painted for public consumption but that the whole system is based on Propaganda! The ruling elite, who owns the media, is presenting the problem “upside down”! First, they brought old Greenspan, the Guru, to explain the Sub-prime mortgages as the source of problem. Oblivious to the fact that Federal Reserve was facilitator of the Great Depression. Then they found out he was the cause of much bigger problems! Afterward, by threatening some representative with possibility of Marshal law and lots of armtwisting, Obama and Bush together put a 700 trillion “bail-out” plan which the Bush administration distributed half of it to Bankers who bought other banks without affecting the downward spiral of recession..
It is still going down and they now plan to spend nearly three trillions Public Money on what Obama calls “infrastructures” which simply means road, social services, school projects, to provide green Jobs, never mentioning the real problem to be solved! Never addressing the basic structural problem facing the country, Globalization, NAFTA, and Reaganomics that caused the transfer of technology and Capital abroad.
Without a solid economic base, i.e. production facilities , factories and sub-structure all infrastructures would become road and bridges to nowhere! If you do not have the trains, building railroads is a wasteful expenditure, Economic 101. It only would benefit the owner of trains and factories who build manufactured products, China, Mexico, India and others That is why we have to change our frame of mind otherwise we must “bailout” the whole Capitalist class in a downward economic spirals with bogus virtual Obama dollars! Indeed, everybody is now asking to be covered with TARP or maybe a much larger TENT, a three trillion dollar one, is needed.
That means our next generation would have an additional three trillion dollars on top of over 10 trillion dollars existing National Debts. Add to that an over 1 trillion dollars yearly trade deficit we would be adding a third to our National debt during the first year of Obama’s Administration.
Obama and his Gang of know-nothing advisors, who put the world into sleep in election times, by painting a rosy picture bringing change to America are throwing everything but the Kitchen Sink at the Economic Tsunami that is threatening our prosperity. 750 Trillions of Bail-out of Big banks, whose analysts right up to the election of Obama, were telling the public that the Wall Street and the Banking system, were the problem. Yet, it was Obama who went on an arm-twisting campaign and push the black representatives and others to vote for the TARP, for Bankers.
Then Bush, without proper accounting to Congress, distributed 350 billions to Banks and investment firms. Now, under the guise of “buying mortgages from the Banks” and purchasing “Toxic Assets” to ease up credit to the public! Nothing happened, banks got the money and the credit never eased! The banks issued more line of credit for the Builders who would build more buildings no-one buys. Then comes the “Bail-out” money of 15 billions now for the bankrupt auto makers. Now, as if there is no economic plan, Obama is espousing the “infrastructure Hoax” to spend billions and may be trillions to build roads to nowhere!
"Now, under the guise of “buying mortgages from the Banks” and purchasing “Toxic Assets” to ease up credit to the public! Nothing happened, banks got the money and the credit never eased!"
And, yet, the entire financial system has not crashed, and the stock market has not lost 4000 points as predicted without an emergency gift to the banks of $700 billion dollars, $850 billion after added pork, funds which were borrowed of course and must be repaid with interest by taxpayers and their great great grandchildren.
The only way to avoid this disaster was to free up credit which remains frozen. Could Henry Paulson have been lying to us? This couldn't have been a blatant ripoff in the waning days of the Bush administration could it? Certainly not in America. Right?

Well put, teddy. There are too many "interests" in overconsumption; and, as selling those interests for short term gain is now what the established USA is about and which carries a phony "moral" charge for those subject to sophisticated marketing, there is no choice but to develop an alternative economy, IMO.
Stop Globalization: Drop Reaganomics to save our economy
FARHAT MAQUAMI
If the Neo-Cons who run the government had any nationalism, or had been conservatives, we would not have been here in the first place. Where were these pinheads a few years ago? Why they did not think of our economy when they were driving us to NFTA, the War in Iraq and Afghanistan, Globalization, and de-industrialization.?
Why even at this point no one is addressing the real Issues facing the US. We have become a consumer society, based on greed.
Providing 3 millions jobs by borrowing three trillion dollars is not the solution as the survival of our economic system would be based on the type of jobs we are creating! We have to denounce Globalization and start manufacturing products we can sell abroad to improve our Balance of trade deficit of almost 1 trillion dollars. We have to stop the useless war in Iraq and Afghanistan, that has cost us 1 trillion dollars, and bring our troops home. We have to be a producer of goods and provide manufacturing jobs. Spending money on infrastructure would not cure our economic cancer caused by a misguided Globalization policy. We don’t need part-time, seasonal, insecure service jobs, or build more roads to bring Chinese and Mexican products here. We need real productive jobs, to lift our selves out of debt. We should not be dependent on Communist Chinese products while with a little bit of diplomacy we can produce the same thing at a lower cost in Cuba.
Our problem is the War in Iraq and Afghanistan that we are throwing good “money we don't have” “to kill people we don't know”! Our problem is NAFTA! Our problem is that we were deceived by our leaders that we can be “Bankers for the world” and have our manufacturing elsewhere. Our problems was that we financed our greedy Captains of industry to transplant their factories in Mexico, China and India to “Maximize their profit” and now we want to “Bail-out” the same Bankers who caused these Economic Tsunami.
We are paying the price of Reagan’s anti-Union stand. We have to come to terms with our Unions again rather than taking our factories to China so we can make money out of the enslavement of their workers by their Communist masters. We have to have subsidize factories here and tax products that comes from abroad.
It is Globalization which transferred our technology and our industries out side, to exploit their cheap labor, and changed us to shoppers at Wal-Mart! It is our Government which encouraged ,subsidized, invested and helped this shameful transfer of our technology, manufacturing and investment abroad and closed its eyes to Bankers who financed “out-sourcing”, even our office jobs and printing of our phone bills abroad, that is the source of our problem. We should start rewarding those who “in-source” and tax those who “outsource” jobs if we want to be prosperous again.
Federal Reserve caused the Depression and caused this recession and economic Tsunami, we should not trust a semi-private body to control our economy.
How can we put the same foxes in charge of our Chicken ranch! They are the ones who drove us to this disaster! Their “Bail-out” is a Hoax. To increase our National Debt to pay to create
temporary fixes for a misguided economy is a fraud upon this nation!
It was not the sub prime lenders and housing problems which started this but the stupidity of our political leaders who were bought buy our greedy industrial elites who got us here. It was our Bankers who financed industrial production from Caribbean to Vietnam. The War on Terror business should stop and we should go after Peace and Reconciliation. This war is not good for economy and must be stopped. It is not profitable!
We have to fight all those who promoted Reaganomics., cheated our workers, rejected our products , destroyed any effort at self reliance, busted our unions, and sent our jobs abroad, all under the Globalization slogan!
We have to stop thinking Globalization. We have to change our frame of mind before spending money and mortgaging our future to China and India. Globalization did to Capitalism what Internationalism did for communism. We did not learn the lessons. Now that we have introduced “Socialism for the Rich” by spending Public money to save banks, and other capitalist institutions, our government has really become an instrument of transferring public wealth to the ruling elite so they can invest more in Mexico, India and China. This should not be acceptable to the Canadian public!
We should stop bailing out the Bankers and start bailing out average Americans. We have to take back our nation from these economic morons who encourage us to shop at Wal-Mart.
Saving the US starts by stopping the Banks from investing abroad, and investing inside the country. Stop financing the GM that we know is on the verge of bankruptcy. Stop the outsourcing of our economy. Encourage manufacturing in USA! Require all foreign Corporations to invest and build subsidiaries here. Imposing heavy taxes on any “out-sourcing” of services; and provide subsidies and tax incentives to exporters of finished products.
As a trading nation we must clean our tarnished reputation by taking our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan. We should denounce torture and admit to the world that Bush and Powell lied to the world by launching a preemptive war and the US reject and denounces all such acts.
Nowadays the economic news sounds just like that of the “Titanic” ………………………..women and children first over board. Oh, excuse me was that supposed to be “into the life boats”.….right!
The crooked Ponzi scheme we try to pass for a monetary system here in the U.S. necessitates never ending "sustained economic growth," which, as a matter of practicality, is impossible.
Google "Money as Debt" and drink in that presentation. Also, see Zeitgeist: Addendum.
The new Earth conscious and environmentally responsible economy Brown and Garver would like to see evolve in Canada should begin here in the U.S. with a thorough rethink/redesign of our monetary system, which for starters, must be pried loose from the private hands of the Fed and the international banksters who control it.

Perhaps we need the CCF back and the Regina manifesto, a product of the last "song of praise" to greed and sleaze. We need, dare one say it in these fearful paranoid times, a revolution particularly in thought, word and deed, a change. Williams has it right the resources of the land belong to the citizens not the corporations.
Corporatism is the giant method of transfering COMMONS land , which is the foundation of any "private property" rights - from COMMONS to private hands.
once the concept of "private property rights" in england centuries ago was codified - that was the end of the idea of "commons" given by the earth to the creatures on this planet.
it started when some people argued that portions of land which they would "develop" or farm, etc. , should be "theirs" and that the way to do it was to create some legal means of recognizing "fences" to demarcate what one claimed as "his" or "hers".
make a claim, make it legal if you have the power to do so, and then it's "private property". ..hence TODAY:
"PRIVATIZATION" of everything under the sun..maybe corporations will find a way to "privatize" AIR and the SUn and Stars to have an "orderly society".
heck - they DID try that in south america...german corporations and multinationals tried to privatize WATER in countries like chile, i believe, but the people beat them back. they are doing that also in countries in asia...controlling the "access" to water and charging people for "delivery" .
same thing with the airwaves..the internet..and what ARE corporations for profit?
they are a bunch of faceless investors secure in their "privacy" , counting their dividends, and their boardrooms and ceo's - private individuals - trying to OWN the world.
that is the purpose of the idea of the PRIVATE corporation".
perhaps countries ought to do them one better:
INCORPORATE the commons into PUBLIC hands where they really belong . imo. fundamentally....the only "private" possession people ought to have are their own house, personal effects and possessions , their personal work ..but once you STEP out INTO the public arena - can NOT own anything but enter into a common property that everyone is only "renting" and must all pay together for its use - because in reality - the earth belongs to NO ONE privately. we are only here at her kindness and tolerance. your house, even that, is only a temporary "rental" UPON the land that belongs to no on really..and is tolerated by society because everyone has a need for a house on a land that belongs to no one. so - it's a balance of respecting each other's need to have dwellings - BUT not as a mark of forever having a "title of ownership" to the land on which it sits.

This article is merely a rant. Though manmade global warming has not been proved, none of those scientists would say it has been DISproved. The evidence suggests it is occurring.
