Statement on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization

WASHINGTON -

Today, the Supreme Court announced that it will hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a challenge to Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban that could have significant ramifications on the future of Roe v. Wade. Battle Born Collective Senior Advisor Tré Easton released the following statement:

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to take up the case challenging Mississippi’s flatly unconstitutional ban on abortions after 15 weeks should be a shock to the system for anyone claiming to give a damn about reproductive justice in the United States. The conservative political plan to remake this country in a 1950s image is well underway. If Democrats want to stop this conservative project to outlaw abortion, they can do so tomorrow by getting rid of the filibuster and passing laws to safeguard reproductive rights and abortion access.

“Last Congress, the vast majority of the Senate Democratic caucus cosponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act—legislation that would have prevented the passage of Mississippi’s draconian ban (and others like it) in the first place. It would have provided a federal floor of reproductive rights protection for pregnant people across the country. Congress must reintroduce the legislation immediately.  When Senate Republicans block it as they’ve vowed to do, Senate Democrats should abolish the filibuster once and for all.

“This is not a game. To protect this right and others, Senate Democrats cannot leave the filibuster in place and hope for the best from this 6-3 conservative Supreme Court. They must end the filibuster and codify these critical rights legislatively. This is the only path. Democrats who have long championed the right to choose with their rhetoric finally have a real opportunity to prove their commitment to it through action.”
