Republicans Confirm Anti-Voting Judge on Selma Anniversary

WASHINGTON

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the confirmation of Eric Murphy to be a United States Circuit Judge for the Sixth Circuit:

"The Senate's confirmation of Eric Murphy is an affront to our civil and human rights. Given how hard Murphy has worked opposing voting rights, it is particularly troubling that Senate Republicans voted to confirm him on the 54th anniversary of the historic Bloody Sunday in Selma. Murphy's home-state senator Sherrod Brown justifiably opposed his nomination due to Murphy's demonstrated commitment to stripping people's rights. He also opposes marriage equality, the rights of transgender people, just immigration policy, and women's reproductive rights, and he promotes death penalty practices for juveniles. His record demonstrates the extent to which he is unfit to serve as a fair and impartial judge."

The Leadership Conference's letter in opposition to the confirmation of Eric Murphy is available here.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States.
