CAIR Asks DHS to Probe Whether Trump's Muslim Ban is Being 'Implemented Informally' on UK Muslims

WASHINGTON

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today asked the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to investigate whether leading GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump's call to ban all Muslim from entering the United States is being "implemented informally" by department officials.

That request came following reports that British Muslims are being blocked from boarding planes for travel to the United States without explanation.

In a letter to DHS, CAIR Senior Staff Attorney William Burgess wrote in part:

"Media reports indicate that a Muslim family of 11 was stopped by DHS officials from boarding a flight that would take them on a trip to Disneyland and that one British imam knew of 20 recent similar cases.

"DHS officials provided no justification whatsoever for their actions. The family had reportedly received approval by the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for their travel to the U.S."

CAIR's letter quoted a report in The Telegraph, which said:

"[T]here is 'growing fear' among British Muslims that aspects of [Donald] Trump's plans are becoming reality, even though they have been widely condemned. . . . [S]ome Muslims believe the public condemnation of Trump's position 'contrasts with what is going on in practice.'"

The letter continued:

"These concerns reflect a real and growing perception in the Muslim community that it is being increasingly targeted by DHS officials and that Donald Trump's call to ban Muslims from entry into the United States is being implemented informally.

"We respectfully request that your office investigate these most recent incidents and ensure that DHS officials do not religiously profile those seeking to enter the United States."

Earlier this month, CAIR joined other national American Muslim organizations in condemning a policy statement by Donald Trump "calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."
