BP Oil Spill Confirmed as Worst in U.S. History; Environmental Groups Challenge Continued Oil Operations in Gulf Excluded from New Moratorium
Although President Obama has extended the moratorium on new deepwater drilling permits for six months and halted operations at thirty-three deepwater wells in the Gulf of Mexico, some oil rigs are continuing their operations. The Center for Biological Diversity has filed a lawsuit to halt forty-nine offshore drilling plans in the Gulf of Mexico that were approved without full environmental review. Meanwhile, the group Food & Water Watch is leading an effort to shut down the Atlantis, another BP oil rig in the Gulf. The group warns an oil spill from the Atlantis could be many times larger than the current spill and even harder to stop.

Show Allextending the moratorium while at the same time allowing waivers and exemptions?
if obama had one iota of empathy he would take complete control of the cleanup - leaving the attempts to stop the spill to bp - but take over the cleanup and bill bp -
bp hasn't even given masks and gloves to many of the cleanup workers!
where are the numerous skimming ships, etc
obama has taken orwelian double-speak past even the the war pig shrub bush !
an interesting link: http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6518#comments_top
when considering that the left has largely vanished (up rahm's ass i guess) obama is a bigger disaster than bush almost!
and how about that freaking idiot jindall - now mr anti-goverment wants the federal gov to come in and build barrier reefs in a few days when the morons can't even rebuild the levees around new orleans.....
and how does the state of louisiana have ANY RIGHT saying anything about this disaster - the louisiana gov has been in bed with big oil from before huey long's days....
hell big oil probably killed huey long....who was one guy that you could say - "he's a crook but he's OUR crook"....
we sure can't say that about obama - that fascist ass yuppie scumbag......
jetting into new orleans BUT needs to be back in chicago tonight for his dinner reservations at his favorite italian restaurant....
"extending the moratorium while at the same time allowing waivers and exemptions?"
Yes. To allow both ideological sides a stake in the plunder, so that it may continue. Ingenious, ehh?
If they succeed in capping the leak - aren't the "relief wells" just more hazardous deep sea wells that BP will be pumping oil from?
and isn't the "rational" for these "relief wells" - at the point the flow is capped - driven primarily by "drill baby drill"?
How will BP frame their "success" in such a way that they get those relief wells (plural) drilled and pumping?
Those are my questions at this point.
The Manchurian candidate is so proficient at fake left go right !
Boycott BP Station, ARCO and AM/PM stations worldwide please.
Boycotting BP is a VERY important step for everyone to take along with demanding that the US government seize and kick their assets. These actions will be pointless unless we change our need for petrolium-we will only be taking those dollars away from one wicked oil comnpany and giving the $ to another wicked oil company.
Oh, look!
Obama lied.
Good for the environmental groups! How about some criminal indictments? Put pressure on State Attorneys? Putting a few CEO's in jail will do a lot more to prevent this in the future than almost anything else.
Prior the Gusher ---------
Did an environment Group get an injunction against Deep Horizon which was overturned by Obomber's Justice Deptment?
It seems that the timing for the Mexican Gulf's spill creates suspicion of being a purposeful event. What would be the consequences of local oil coming to fulfill the USA needs and its independence from south western Asian or Muslim Oil? Well, that Israel factor is out of the equation and for USA, that has no friends only common interests, then Israel becomes an unneeded, unnecessary problem.
We could guess that it could be a too early reaction for Israel but this country is really nervous about that possibility and will do whatever at hand to avoid it happens, not the next decade, not next century but never.
USA has to baby sitter Israel for ever no matter what, and the Jew mighty lobby is there to make sure to keep it going on for ever. So USA could be destroyed but not Israel.
too darned bad there isn't/wasn't more emphasis on prevention iinstead of having to deal with 'cure' - same w/t Exxon Valdez: if shipping companies were required to build double-hulled tankers, the EV 10b gal leak would most likely not have occurred - and it looks like in this latest mess, a few careful precautions, even a little more adhering to proper procedures, would have made all the difference. the crappy extra time and money it would have cost them probably looks pretty good now that they are looking at 1B+ to clean it up - dumb-asses :(
BP is just a regular CORPORATION doing what most CORPORATIONS do.
After the medical care for profit ripoffs, the financial "crisis", and this oil spew, it must be apparent that CORPORATIONS either cannot or will not bring the kinds of results that make a sound, viable nation/society.
The for-profit CORPORATE BUSINESS FORM is at the root of most, if not all of the threats and problems we face.
CORPORATIONS are a greater threat than Al Qaida to a decent way of life.
Yet, large-scale organized response may be a big factor in surviving the coming climate shift. We cannot afford CORPORATE business as usual. We cannot afford PROFIT.
CORPORATIONS must be re-defined to directly benefit society as a whole, and soon.
Corp is Borg.
There is never going to be a root cause analysis of this disaster. Indeed, there is no need for one because we finally have a florid example of what happens when "regulatory" agencies of the government become hand maidens of the industries they are supposed to regulate. In a way it's quite good that this happened under circumstances which allow even the dullest of our citizens to see how such powerful business entities as Big Oil, Big Pharma, and Big Agra can do whatever they want without fear of any significant punishment. The bottom line is the Holy Grail of the mega national corporations and lawlessness is the practice of the day. Corruption of governments goes hand in hand with their quest for the all might dollar and it represents the highest level of engagement of the majority of our elected officials. Somewhere along the line it appears to have been forgotten that there is a limit to which nature can be pushed before serous and life threatening consequences appear. Has everyone forgotten about Love Canal? Slowly but surely our air, food and water are being irreversibly contaminated by unregulated organizations which have no concern for the future of life on this planet. Why are they allowed to flourish while they continue to put the very existence of all life at risk? This question should be of concern to everyone as we and our children are dependent upon how it is answered if life as we know it is to survive. We are being used, without our consent, in experiments which may be life threatening. Auschwitz has returned and we are all on trains rolling to the final solution. The bankers and Wall Street criminals may think they are safe but they they will, in due time, be making the same trip.
BP Oil Spill Confirmed as Worst in U.S. History
That can't be allowed to happen.
Expect history to be rewritten......again.
Top Kill---dead.
I sent Biden a plan that might work if there is a clear shot from the top of the BOP to the wellpipe under it. (yes, I'm just loose enuf to do that...)
BP is talking about cutting the top of the BOP off even, so they can try to snap on a cap, or snap a sleeve on and progressively close the hole.
My plan involves REBAR. Picture 20' X 1/4" and 1/2" rebar linked together with 21" breakable links (or heavy chain), lowered from the surface into the hole, every tenth one set to break as it enters the hole to let 10 pcs free-fall until they get jammed on the inside of the pipe at a joint, or the bottom of the hole. Repeat as necessary to create a jam-up that restricts the flow enough for the mud/concrete fix to work.
Rebar is heavy enough to fall through the pressure of the oil, and, if rigged with cuts/jam-producing imperfections, would probably ball up readily.
A string of rebar could be lowered from a surface vessel, maneuvered and snipped by an ROV. A longer, heavier train of rebar might be able to pull a lump of something into the hole to further restrict the flow.
So, I guess I'll just have a beer, put my feet up, and watch as Florida is transformed into what looks like an oil dipstick off an old Chevy.
Come on, Iceage!
"BP Oil Spill Confirmed as Worst in U.S. History"
Ummm........so what is the biggest oil spill in world history and why didn't we hear about it?
Oh yeah......our 'free' press.
The Gulf oil disaster by Deepwater Horizons is probably 100 times a greater tragedy than 9/11 and the bombing of the World Trade Center (1,2,7 WTC). The food chain in the Gulf has some 3.2 billion fish which is enough to feed the entire nation in perpetuity.
I wondered what would be the human toll in jobs, lives and future sustenance, in the next 10 years. I think the fisherman, and the peripherally economies of stores, shops, and people etc. that are disaffected should be compensated 10 years in businesses profits and wages by BP.
I hope Obama will help the people directly rather than help corrupt industries (BP) like he did in the Sub-prime mortgage scam, where he should have reduced mortgage rates overnight for homeowners where they could have re-finance their mortgage instantly, and cut the mortgage principle of homeowners by 30 percent as well, as a result of the predatory Sub-prime mortgages, securitizations markets and the 600 trillion dollars Financial Derivatives Market, which gutted families and caused the Great Recession (9 million people unemployed, 18 trillion dollars lost in pension funds and home equity and wealth).
Obama, by comparison, let banks and corporations be compensated directly for defaulting homeowners and their families, in setting up the PPIP (Public, Private, Investment Plan) program (Banks and investors got a 10 to 1 multiplier) for them exclusively-- and let the banks nonetheless-- foreclose on homeowners even though the Banks (JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs) got their money for those individual mortgages directly and proportionately, rather than a program in helping or compensating people--homeowners keep their home--directly.
I hope analogously BP isn't JP Morgan Chase (WAMU, Bear Stearns, CAMU --2008), Wells Fargo (Wachovia--2008), Citigroup, Bank of America (Merrill Lynch--2008) and Goldman Sachs
