American Sustainable Business Network Responds to Senator Manchin's Decision on Build Back Better

The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) expressed extreme disappointment with Senator Manchin's apparent decision to halt negotiations on the critically important Build Back Better (BBB) legislation.

"With new evidence every day of the threats from the climate crisis and COVID, and the strong business case demonstrated in numerous reports, the need for immediate action on the Build Back Better Act could not be clearer," said Thomas Oppel, ASBN Executive Vice President.

WASHINGTON

The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) expressed extreme disappointment with Senator Manchin's apparent decision to halt negotiations on the critically important Build Back Better (BBB) legislation.

"With new evidence every day of the threats from the climate crisis and COVID, and the strong business case demonstrated in numerous reports, the need for immediate action on the Build Back Better Act could not be clearer," said Thomas Oppel, ASBN Executive Vice President.

Manchin unexpectedly announced Sunday on Fox News that he would not vote for BBB despite his participation in months of negotiations. He cited concerns about the bill's impact on inflation and suggested he could not explain the measure to his constituents.

But most economic studies have reported that BBB would have a positive impact on the economy, including Goldman Sachs cutting its projection for US economic growth following Manchin's announcement. Many polls also show strong support for much of the legislation from West Virginians.

Build Back Better is a monumental piece of legislation that makes critically important actions to tackle dangerous climate change even as extreme storms driven by climate change worsen as seen recently in Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois. The need for a national paid leave program is spotlighted as a new COVID variant surges, extending the childcare tax credit would put money in the pockets of families, even as childcare provisions would reduce their expenses.

"Given the strong business case and the economic positives in this measure, we can only hope the Senator will reconsider and get to yes on Build Back Better for the good of our country and our planet," said Oppel.

The American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) advocates for policy change and informs business owners, policymakers and the public about the need and opportunities for building a vibrant, broadly prosperous, sustainable economy. Founded in 2009, its membership represents over 250,000 businesses in a wide range of industries.
