Sanders, Jackson, Platner Take Aim at Oligarchy With Maine Labor Day Rally

"We do not live in a system that is broken. We live in a system that is functioning exactly as it is intended," said Graham Platner, running for US Senate. "We live in a system that has been built by the political class to enrich and support billionaires on the backs of working people."

Sen. Bernie Sanders headlined a Labor Day rally in downtown Portland, Maine on Monday as part of his ongoing "Fighting Oligarchy" tour, where he joined hands in solidarity with the two candidates—Troy Jackson and Graham Platner—both of whom embrace the Vermont independent's democratic socialist message and a critique that argues concentrated wealth and power have corrupted both major political parties at the expense of working people.

Platner, an oysterman from the small coastal town of Sullivan seeking to win the Democratic primary in order to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in 2026, launched his campaign last month by stating flatly that "the oligarchy is the enemy."

Sen. Bernie Sanders Holds "Fighting Oligarchy" Rally In Chicago

Sanders Will Bring Fighting Oligarchy Tour to Maine, Joining Collins Challenger at Labor Day Rally

"We need to make clear that there is a real opportunity for change—an opportunity for working people to see themselves reflected in our politics," said Senate candidate Graham Platner.

Maine, home to the latest electoral challenge from a progressive candidate who's hoping to unseat a corporate-backed establishment politician and represent the interests of working people, will also be the site of US Sen. Bernie Sanders' next stop on his Fighting Oligarchy tour, the lawmaker announced Monday.

Sanders (I-Vt.) said he plans to hold a rally in Portland, Maine with Senate candidate Graham Platner and gubernatorial contender Troy Jackson on September 1 as the country marks Labor Day—bringing national attention to Platner's bid to unseat five-term Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).

Sanders Endorses Working Class Champion Troy Jackson for Maine Governor

"Troy knows what's going on with the working class of Maine because he's part of that working class," said Sen. Bernie Sanders.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday endorsed Troy Jackson's Democratic gubernatorial bid in Maine, calling the former state Senate president and fifth-generation logger "different" from establishment Democrats who have abandoned the working class.

"The working class is under attack from oligarchs and their friends in Washington and in state capitols across the country," Sanders (I-Vt.) said in a statement. "It's no wonder working folks are angry. They are angry because they feel like no one is in their corner and Democrats just aren't listening to them."

    Sen. Jeff Merkley

'More of This!' Merkley Leads Senate Demand for Separate Vote on Manchin Deal

"Thank you to these senators for their solidarity with frontline communities against more fossil fuel pollution!" said one activist.

Environmental justice campaigners on Thursday welcomed a letter from eight senators demanding separate votes on a government funding resolution and Sen. Joe Manchin's fossil fuel-friendly federal permitting bill.

The letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)—who made a backroom deal with Manchin (D-W.Va.) on permitting reform to pass the Inflation Reduction Act—echoed a message that dozens of Democrats sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) last week.
