Repair Our Democracy Blasts GOP Lawmakers for Shamefully Defending Voter Suppression During S. 1 Hearing Today

During today's Senate Committee hearing on the For the People Act (H.R. 1, S. 1), GOP Senators like Roy Blunt and Ted Cruz defended efforts by Republican state lawmakers to pass new voting restrictions--shamelessly making false claims about the For the People Act and showing how far Republicans will go to keep more Americans from voting.

WASHINGTON

During today's Senate Committee hearing on the For the People Act (H.R. 1, S. 1), GOP Senators like Roy Blunt and Ted Cruz defended efforts by Republican state lawmakers to pass new voting restrictions--shamelessly making false claims about the For the People Act and showing how far Republicans will go to keep more Americans from voting.

In response, Repair Our Democracy spokesman Ryan Thomas issued the following statement:
"Today's hearing was a stunning reminder that GOP senators will stop at nothing to erode the massive public support for this bill and block its passage in the Senate.
"Republicans are clearly intent on acting as co-conspirators to the deluge of state legislatures pressing to enact Jim Crow-style laws to keep voters of color from the polls and make it easier for Republicans to win elections.
"If Senate Democrats want to stop the GOP's shameful efforts to suppress the vote, the only option is to heed the dire warnings of the experts who testified today and move immediately to pass the For the People Act."
The For the People Act strikes at the heart of our broken democracy, rebuilding it from the ground up and returning power to the people by rooting out corruption, enacting a small donor, matching funds system, protecting voting rights, and securing our elections. Repair Our Democracy has a breakdown of the bill's key provisions here.
Recent polling from Global Strategy Group and ALG Research shows that 83 percent of voters support the For the People Act--including 96 percent of Democrats, 74 percent of Republicans, and 73 percent of Independents.

Repair Our Democracy, a project of Democracy 21, is focused on defending the For the People Act against bad-faith attacks and outright lies.
