New York's Rebatable Bailout
You can't make up the following realities in New York State! Note the following series of events driven by the preposterous plutocrats and see if you get steamed.
Greed, power, reckless speculation and theft of other peoples' money by Wall Streeters collapsed the U.S. economy into a deep recession that started in 2007-08.
These super-rich Wall Street banksters looted and drained trillions of worker pensions and mutual fund savings while nationwide eight million jobs were lost.
Panicked that their overweening avarice was pushing their companies over the cliff, the banksters rushed to Washington, terrified members of Congress with the help of ex-Goldman Sachs CEO turned Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and propelled the Bush White House into a series of massive taxpayer bailouts and guarantees amounting to trillions of dollars during the last quarter of 2006.
By the end of 2009, the Wall Street welfarists were recording once again record profits and sky-high bonuses. Month after month it became clear that the banks were not lending to small and larger businesses to get the economy moving again-a major reason give for the bailouts.
A good slice of the money went to bonuses, mergers and other empire building by the remaining five giant conglomerate banks. Today these banks are sitting on mountains of cash and many credit-worthy businesses and startups still cannot get loans.
As the Fiscal Policy Institute wrote in April: "Essential services like fire departments and schools, recession-buffering social safety net programs like homeless prevention and senior services, and critical infrastructure systems like hospitals, roads and mass transit all face severe cutbacks.
"But Wall Street is not suffering from the budget catastrophe or from the crash. ...The financial industry rang up $61.4 billion in profits for 2009 alone-that is nearly triple Wall Street's previous record. These are truly windfall profits-they are courtesy of the taxpayer-funded bailout [and federal policies uniquely privileging the big banks with virtually free money] and not because the big banks made money from financing the recovery of American businesses. Never before has Wall Street made so much money from doing so little for economic and job growth."
Making money from speculation instead of from investment is exactly what the legendary British economist, John Maynard Keynes, warned about almost eighty years ago in arguing for a securities transaction tax.
The conditions where many regular New Yorkers live are grim. Poverty, unemployment, home foreclosures, and small business bankruptcies keep growing.
On the other side of the tracks, the top twenty-five hedge fund managers recorded an average of $1 billion each, or over $80 million each a month in 2009. Quite a quick rebound on the backs of American taxpayers and privileged tax policies.
Low-moderate and middle-income New Yorkers already pay a higher percentage of family income in state and local taxes than do the richest one percent of New Yorkers!
Surprisingly, there is a simple way to eliminate the state deficit and prevent tens of thousands of layoffs and large service cutbacks.
What most New Yorkers do not know is that for about a century there has been a state stock transfer tax on purchases of securities. This year, this tax, similar to ones imposed in 30 other countries, will amount to about $16 billion. Amazingly, since 1979, this tax has been instantly rebated by New York State back to the brokers or clearinghouses who paid it. A 100% rebate every year for the bailed out industry that caused the recession and its immense human damage.
Obviously the stock exchanges and their brokers wield big political power. Flush with arrogance, bailouts and profits, they have no shame. So after blocking a tax on those unconscionable bonuses that outraged so many Americans, the securities industry has made sure that neither the Democratic nor Republican candidates for Governor utter a peep about retaining this $16 billion in tax revenues to get the state out of its dire straits.
One man, Howie Hawkins from Syracuse, NY, is challenging both the big boys on Wall Street and the duopolists' candidates. He is the Green Party candidate for Governor, nicknamed the Green Hornet. Pollinating truth and justice across the State, this ex-Marine, author, long-time citizen advocate, working blue collar teamster and public interest thinker, challenged Mr. Cuomo's self-imposed taboo:
"Why is Mr. Cuomo, the anointed front runner, hiding the Stock Transfer Tax from the public when it is an obvious way to bridge the state budget deficit? Why does he rule out higher taxes on the rich when they have more money than ever, why won't he make them pay their fair share, when they'll still be rich after paying their fair share?"
All the politicians in Albany act like we're out of money and debate over what services to cut, all the while refusing to tell New Yorkers about the $16 billion they hand back to Wall Street speculators," he added.
Mr. Cuomo is a recipient of campaign contributions from hedge fund managers.
Take any poll. Betcha New Yorkers overwhelmingly support Mr. Hawkins' position (see: www.howiehawkins.com). Unfortunately, the two major parties predictably exclude him from any debates this fall.
If you are a New Yorker, and after reading this you are less indignant than you would be were you overcharged by a cab driver or were hurled a racist or ethnic slur from some passerby, it is unlikely you'll hustle up a neighborhood or workplace petition to demand that your lawmakers in Albany legislate keeping that $16 billion and all the jobs that can be saved with that revenue.
My guess is that if a million New Yorkers sign such petitions in the next three weeks and talk it up where they live in city, town and countryside, they'll win. You'll also signal that you're ready to jettison your political servitude and assert the sovereignty of the people as expressed in our Constitution's preamble-"we the people."
If you can't wait, call your Albany legislators at 518-455-2800 (State Senate) or 518-455-4100 (State Assembly) to see when they will be near your town during this summer. Go and give them two earfuls and demand that they commit.

Show AllSo good they posted it twice. Go Nader!
Dear Mr. Nader,
You are a hero of mine. I first found you when you went after the auto industry. Your policy changes have saved millions of lives with seat belts and other auto safety changes.
If you run for president or any other office, I will send you money, again.
Good luck.
Ralph, i watched your IN-Depth interview on C-Span this morning.
Great stuff! And yes, I'm voting for the uncorporatized Howie Hawkins for governor.
Good for you and thanks.
the 4th paragraph, is typographical error on the date, should be 2008~~ not 2006.
whocares;)
if people really are serious about "taking this country back" a piece at a time, Hawkins SHOULD be a shoo-in ....
And I'm saving up my money for Ralph ...
The people do not yet understand how manipulated we are, and, while Hawkins is a good and sincere candidate, he will not win this election. Nevertheless his candidacy is another step towards the light.
~~who else is making money? AIG thats who. Responsive back to the NY Fed. with a sell off here and there of a few holdings, so they are makeing money the 'old fashioned way' by liquidating some assets. Remember those 'preferred stocks' that were kina in the middle of the $700B swindle, well those are coming out of inventory now, just as soon as the Chicago boys in the leadership give the nod. And you knowwwwwwwwwwwwww they gotta nod yes on those, cuz Barney and Dodd wanna ballyhoo something, anything.... and expect the boy Andrew to be all over it first politically, wouldn't wanna miss the train yanno, and the sleeping never did care anyway.
~~hey green hornet you know they are going to cash in the preferreds, consult with Ralph and others and pick THE BIGGEST, to ride into office.
~~hey green hornet you could even 'demand' they sell those preferred now, you know 'in the interest of the people' an all that. Don't worry we won't ever see a penny of the money anyway, but politically as you demand it 'as a green hornet principal', and Timmy is going to do it anyway, why shouldn't you cash in alittle of the ole AIG asset for us?
~~ride AIG green hornet ride
whocares;)
The fact that people can solely make so much money in a year makes me sick especially with all those essential services and social safety net programs getting cut. It is very sickening.
Don't forget Nader caused Bush to be elected rather than Gore and we would be in a different world today if Gore had run things-- I doubt he would have gone into Iraq War and no doubt we would be more active in getting rid of carbon dioxide and moving forward with alternative energy.
I do NOT want the Republicans-- the party fo NO in power in 2012 and a Green party candidate could just do that again.
Hahahahahaha!
Thanks for showing us why democrats are truly as evil as their republican twins!
Progressive party candidate no matter who in 2012!
Gore defeated Gore by employing the triangulation beloved of the Blue Dogs/Democratic Leadership Council, of whom he remains a prominent member. It meant he didn't campaign in his home state. It meant that he agreed with the corporate control of the presidential debates & the exclusion of anyone other than the two oligarchical candidates. It meant that he prevented any Democratic senator from certifying the complaint of election fraud by the Congressional Black Caucus (remember the opening of "Fahrenheit 9/11"?) .
The Blue Dogs handed the working people of the US over to the corporations by complicity with the Republicans under Clinton, who pushed through NAFTA and the Telecommunications Act which consolidated media under right-wing control and who put his signature to the abolition of Glass-Steagall - and now the same crowd remains in control. We saw what the current lot's attitude is towards unions when they mocked the failure of Blanche Lincoln's opponent to knock her out of the primary with union help.
Elections will never improve things in the United States again because elections are designed to exclude the citizenry from exercising any actual control.
Thank you for the clarification and exposure of this typical myth of Green Party collusion with the GOP. This false flag is more that unworthy of the light of day, frankly, and is only used by blindly loyal democrats who simply cannot think outside the box of the American political Duopoly.
I do stand in opposition to your negativity regarding changing the course of the American ship of state through elections. I believe that all the power ultimately resides with the people, that the fascist corporate forces spend huge sums to keep us like mushrooms ( in the dark and fed shite ), and that to negate the power of the electorate is to be on the side of violent revolution, one doomed to fail as that plays directly into the hands of the rulers of this nation.
"The only way people give up their power is to believe they haven't any" Alice Walker
George Bush was not elected, he was appointed by the US Supreme Court! And as far as I'm concerned Al Gore kept Ralph Nader from being elected! Besides after all the great things that the Clinton/Gore team did for us such as, NAFTA, GATT, The Telecommunications Act, The Commodities Modernization Act and a whole slew of other anti worker legislation, why the hell would you want Al Gore to be President anyway? It was the Clinton/Gore dotcom bubble along with the policies of Bush/Cheney that helped tank the economy at the end of the Clinton and beginning of the Bush Administration. Face it, Clinton/Gore laid the ground work for a large majority of our manufacturing based jobs to be out sourced over seas. So exactly why would you have wanted those policies continued by having Al Gore as President instead of Ralph Nader, a man who has always taken the side of working Americans and fought for their economic, educational, saftey and health concerns? Why?
BTW, for your own edification, check out C-Span 2's archives of this last saturdays In Depth program interview with Ralph Nader, he did an excelent job of shooting down your arguments about the 2000 election. He also spent most of the three hour program talking about fixes for our government and economy that you will not hear other politicians talking about!
You appear to be mentally enslaved. You are hopelessly hopeful and unbelievably believing. You feed the machine with your shallow perception. You believe when the evidence clearly shows you to be wrong. You believe anyway. That is called Faith. You are full of it. Faith that is.
To your first point...ah, no, the Supreme Court ensured Jr's win, not Ralph Nader! Trust me, it was Jr's Divine Right to sit in the oval office, and it was gonna happen no matter the reality of the election.
Secondly, while Nader was implying support for the Green candidate, he was also making a call to action to New Yorkers to fight a very specific abuse of the law, one that's costing us dearly. I for one am extremely grateful to him for the information and plan on taking action.
Many hearts and souls can be purchased, but NOT all. The seeds of respectful cooperative civilization remain ready to spring from the ashes of corruption.
Thanks Ralph Nader.
Similar in WA: "Bilderberg" Gates has evaded $1.24 Billion in tax in the State of WA. WA has been closing schools. I guess Bill needs more numbers on his page to donate to the poor widows and orphans. Gates runs Microsoft sales through his Reno, NV office to avoid WA B&O tax. (Just like GE shows all their profit from foreign operations and payed no federal income tax in 2009.)
Reagan started all this when he said, 'Companies don't pay taxes, people do.' Mention paying tax to the wealthy and they will threaten to move to SC or India!

(Google: how much income tax did Microsoft pay in 2009? There are all sorts of interesting sites.)
It's time to start taxing capital again because, that's where the money is.
Bill Gates, and his billions, are funding the charter school movement -- and the current national Obama -approved education program, Race to the Top. No surprise that Bill Gates wouldn't blink when public schools in Washington State are closing due to lack of funds.

I'M PROUD TO HAVE VOTED FOR RALPH NADER IN 2008!
The jug-eared compromiser who has surrounded himself with SWINDLERS in lieu of advisers has me so angry, that if there were any progressive alternative who had a chance I'd pledge life and limb to support that person. The fact that the foul-mouthed, fork-tounged nondemocrat rahm is correct in assuming progressives are retards who have nowhere else to go makes me especially furious.
