A Nobel Worthy Effort: Ending Youth Violence From Chicago to Afghanistan
But to many parents, students and teachers in Chicago, Duncan’s visit to Chicago represented the perpetrator returning to scene of the crime.
That’s because Duncan’s “Renaissance 2010” initiative that he helped launch beginning in 2005, ordered dozens of Chicago's public schools closed and thousands of students reassigned to campuses outside their neighborhoods —and often across gang lines.
The closure of these public schools was a move by Duncan to bring in privatized charter schools that take public funds and place them in schools outside of public oversight. In numerous school board meetings and protests, community members have warned Duncan that the reckless closing of schools would have dire consequences—from the loss of cherished education programs and neighborhood schools, to the increase in gang violence.
Before the 2006 school year, an average of 10-15 public school students were fatally shot each year. But as schools were shut down and public education was eroded, deadly shootings soared; 24 in the 2006-07 school year, 23 in the 2007-08 school year, and last year ended with a record 34 deaths and 290 shootings.
"You have a trail of blood and tears ever since they launched (Renaissance 2010)," said Tio Hardiman, director of the anti-violence organization CeaseFire Illinois, in story by MSNBC. "There's a history of violence associated with moving kids from one area to another."
Investing in our public schools and after-school programs (rather than siphoning off money from them in the form of charter schools), and investing in job programs and universal healthcare before investing in failed banks, could go a long way towards alleviating the conditions of hopelessness that breed violence.
But even reprioritizing spending on social services and education isn’t enough to save America’s youth from violence.
Inauspiciously, the Obama administration chose October 7th to issue its press release calling for a “National conversation on values to address youth violence.” October 7th marked the 8th anniversary of the War in Afghanistan—a war that has enlisted tens of thousands of America’s youth to carry automatic weapons to a foreign land to participate in the unhinged brutality of an occupation. As Obama considers whether to bow to the generals and send an addition 40,000 troops to Afghanistan—a war widely becoming known as “Obama’s Vietnam”—already some 800 Americans and thousands more Afghans have been killed in this conflict.
If Obama wants his national conversation on youth violence to be more than platitudes and media hype, he would do well to revisit these words delivered by fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King, Jr. in his famous “Beyond Vietnam” speech:
We were taking the black young men who had been crippled by our society and sending them eight thousand miles away to guarantee liberties in Southeast Asia which they had not found in southwest Georgia and East Harlem. So we have been repeatedly faced with the cruel irony of watching Negro and white boys on TV screens as they kill and die together for a nation that has been unable to seat them together in the same schools. So we watch them in brutal solidarity burning the huts of a poor village, but we realize that they would hardly live on the same block in Chicago…
…I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government.

Show AllAnd these are the kids being recruited for the army. No wonder we're so screwed up!
It should also be noted that Obama's old basketball pal Arne Duncan also militarized the Chicago school system, at least in the low income sections. Chicago schools rank first in the presence of ROTC and recruiters. Many are essentially military schools for the poor who have little employment opportunities and thus end up war fodder in our many wars. The tendency for youth violence is cultivated and encouraged by this system and is sadly predictable. As Michael Moor said about Obama's Nobel prize, congratulations, now earn it. Dumping Arne Duncan and ending our occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq would be a great start.
Several times, on CD, I have written about the issue you raise in your post. At this time, Chicago has six high school military academies -- more than any other city in the United States: 3, Army; 1, Navy; 1, Marines; and 1, Air Force. All of this information is included on the Chicago Public Schools website.
More than 300 parents, teachers and community supporters turned out to protest the turning of Senn High School into a Naval Academy, under the banner of reform, but the citizens did not prevail.
When asked if his Quaker roots and his focus on military schools were at odds, CEO Arne Duncan replied, "I come from a Quaker family, and I've always been against war. But I'm going to put the Naval Academy in there, because it will give people in the community more choices."
It is my understanding, as Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan wants to expand the numbers of high school military academies -- into cities across this country.
Militarization of poor youth starts at an early age. During my childhood, instead of camping and outdoorsmanship, which required buying some uniforms and paying some fees, we were offered Youth Corps experiences in marching and obedience, free of charge.
I could be wrong, but I see the trend toward giving inner city youth classes in synchronized "Stepping" as a cheap mind-numbing alternative to lifetime physical conditioning activities like swimming, track and tennis, which require facilities.

Nobel prize for 'not being Bush'!!!
God bless America and Barak Obama for not being Bush.
George W. Bush represented evil in the world and Obama represents civility. God bless Barak H. Obama!
Thank you Jesse Hagopian and Common Dreams:
This is true reporting. Common Dreams is publishing the articles that reveal the facts of Obama's abuse of power.
The cowardly and fraudulent Obama hides behind the propaganda that his sleazy P.R. people arrange.
Announcing a anti-youth-violence initiative in Chicago, where his Education Secretary has closed schools contributing to youth deaths, and on the 8th anniversary of our war against Afghanistan, is supposed to put Obama in a positive light?
The majority of people will not be fooled.
It is clear that Obama's presidency has been a continuation of the Bush administration.
Obama has KEPT the Bush era policies of preemption and has continually THREATENED IRAN with the possible use of nukes on them. The Obama administration continues to construct bunker buster nuclear weapons. One of Mr. Obama's biggest campaign contributors was Exelon--a nuclear industry which pollutes the environment here in the United States. I suggest you all read David Swanson's new book Daybreak and understand that Obama has not rescinded Bush's so-called "antiterror policies."
Kathy Kelly is the Chicago native who most deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.
If there was ever a time when the "Nobel Peace Prize" award has NO VALUE, it is now. Obama is more about war than peace. I wonder what kind of drugs this Nobel Committee was on when they voted in favor of Obama for this "award."
U.S. Politicians who support American Imperialism, Empire and the lawlessness of human rights do not deserve this award, and Mr. Obama is part and parcel of U.S. Imperial aims and goals. Obama DOES NOT DESERVE this award whatsover. I am not Rush or Hannity saying this either. There are many, many individuals who have been fighting for the cause their entire lives who SHOULD have RECEIVED this Nobel Peace Prize way ahead of President Obama.
This afternoon Obama will be laying out more strategy to BOMB People and yes, innocent people have already dies THANKS to President Obama. Innocent People will continue to DIE on the ORDERS of Obama.
I can think of many people who DESERVE this award way ahead of American politicians for EMPIRE do. The Chicagoan who really DESERVED this AWARD is Kathy Kelly. Kathy Kelly's entire life is devoted to peace and she actually goes to war torn countries and literally helps out the people in those countries. So, yes, it is Kathy Kelly, the real PEACE ACTIVIST FROM CHICAGO who most deserves the Nobel Peace Prize over a PHONY PEACE ACTIVIST NAMED PRESIDENT BARACK H. OBAMA!!!!!
This Nobel Committee must have been Hallucinating and highly Delusional in giving Obama this award. Obama sells more nuclear weapons to India and let's Israel do whatever it wants to the Palestinians. Obama bombs innocents in Pakistan and Afghanistan and takes out entire families. Obama's speech in Cairo was not as well received around the world, including the Middle East region, despite what commentators in America might suggest. Noam Chomsky has been very critical of Mr. Obama's Middle East policy.
Anyone who advocates peace and justice cannot accept that the war mongering President Obama led by his team of war-like advisers, including Hillary Clinton, Dennis Ross and Richard Holbrooke could ever win this thing.
From Noam Chomsky to the Berrigan Brothers to Tariq Ali to Kathy Kelly to Arundhati Roy, there are plenty of people whom DESERVE THIS AWARD LONG BEFORE the WAR-MONGERING President Barack H. Obama!!!!
In Paul Craig Roberts fine article at Counterpunch.org, entitled: "Warmonger Wins Peace Prize: Upside Down World," he writes that:
"...The Nobel Committee has awarded the 2009 Peace Prize to President Obama, the person who started a new war in Pakistan, upped the war in Afghanistan, and continues to threaten Iran with attack unless Iran does what the US government demands and relinquishes its rights as a signatory to the non-proliferation treaty. The Nobel committee chairman, Thorbjoern Jagland said, “Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future.” Obama, the committee gushed, has created “a new climate in international politics.”....Tell that to the 2 million displaced Pakistanis and the unknown numbers of dead ones that Obama has racked up in his few months in office. Tell that to the Afghans where civilian deaths continue to mount as Obama’s “war of necessity” drones on indeterminably....No Bush policy has changed. Iraq is still occupied. The Guantanamo torture prison is still functioning. Rendition and assassinations are still occurring. Spying on Americans without warrants is still the order of the day. Civil liberties are continuing to be violated in the name of Oceania’s “war on terror.”...Obama has done nothing to hold the criminal Bush regime to account, and the Obama administration has bribed and threatened the Palestinian Authority to go along with the US/Israeli plan to deep-six the UN’s Goldstone Report on Israeli war crimes committed during Israel’s inhuman military attack on the defenseless civilian population in the Gaza Ghetto....The US Ministry of Truth is delivering the Obama administration’s propaganda that Iran only notified the IAEA of its “secret” new nuclear facility because Iran discovered that US intelligence had discovered the “secret” facility. This propaganda is designed to undercut the fact of Iran’s compliance with the Safeguards Agreement and to continue the momentum for a military attack on Iran...."

ACTION JACKSON: Thank you for your passionate post that shares many useful facts. I, too, thought of Kathy Kelly immediately for this award. What a sham-scam the whole charade has become, just another "marketing" gimmick to make the obvious (war) into what it is not (peace). SOME will indeed fall for the packaging, as they haven't got it in themselves to recognize the authentic, having been long immersed in the world of everything from faux food to false news , with pseudo opinions manufactured in the process.
sue1403: "Common Dreams is publishing the articles that reveal the facts of Obama's abuse of power." That they are, along with a number of articles that minimize those abuses by their excuses-making for Obama. But most of those who post here can be counted on for "setting them straight." Thank you for your moral clarity in your own contributions to the setting-straight project.
Seems to me that what Obama could best do to "launch an initiative" against youth violence in Chicago and elsewhere would be to launch Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan out of the door and initiate a program of "education reform" the direct opposite of the busting of ghetto schools that Duncan undertook in Chicago. This should help Chicago and other cities to re-discover the value and potentialities of social control through revitalized communities that Duncan's privatization agenda as well as the barely avoided further gentrification of the city from Olympic hosting have so weakened. The "conversations" will do no more to bring peace to the cities than over-blown "speeches" have brought peace to people around the world. That's the "effort" that's needed, not a lot of silly symbolic conferences and more Obama lectures to black youth to behave themselves. The effort would be well worth the Peace Prize, but where is the slightest indication that Obama intends to undertake it?
obama isn't the hero..
also chicago sucks
regards,
anunturi
I will continue to say that giving Obama this award is an abomination. The good Obama cheerleaders on HuffPo are calling people who don't agree with this award unAmerican and the phrase keeps coming up "Why do you hate America?" This is the same scary stuff that came up during the first half of the Bush Administration, particularly from post-9-11 until 2004, after which it was finally discovered beyond a doubt that the emperor had no clothes and had liked to us about Iraq (even though so many us were devastated the day we attacked Iraq). This country is far more divided than ever with Obama in office.
What you said.
And on what basis anyone could say he deserved this will be forever unknown. It is embarrasing for all concerned.
What about the despicable example of Obamanible ADULT violence from DC (District Corporate) headquarters to Iraqiranistan, 'round the world? What an IGNOBEL prize!
Seems everytime o opens his sweet tongued mouth he becomes an even bigger oxymoron, I mean where in the hell did corporate america get this guy and why is he continuing the hell of the past 40 years? Sorry, I forgot his payoff will be considerable, but will he be given a second term? If he his that will be at least very close to century of tyranny of american hegemony via the elitist controllers.
April Fools comes but twice a Year.
Congradulations to the macrabre corporate jester !!
Bombing is violence,
War is violence.
Obama is a propagandist.
