Engaging American Muslims Will Give a Far Better Message to the Muslim World than Speeches
President Barack Obama is planning to address Muslims from Egypt. But we American Muslims believe he would have made a better choice by engaging Muslims at home first.
He has been reaching out to Muslims since he took office. He mentioned Muslims in his inauguration speech; he gave his first interview as President to an Arab broadcaster instead of a U.S. television network; he visited Turkey in his first 100 days and appointed a special envoy, who is more balanced than his predecessors, to deal with the Israel-Palestine issue; he also promised to speak to the Muslim world from a Muslim capital.
Although these are excellent first steps, it is critical that the President engage Muslims at home first. He must remember that he represents us, too.
President Obama could begin by making his address to Muslims worldwide from a mosque on American soil. Why not Masjid Al-Fatir, the mosque in the President's Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago? Muhammad Ali, the former world heavyweight boxing champion, built this house of worship. Ali is an American Muslim respected throughout the Muslim world. President Obama visited churches and synagogues in the U.S. during his election campaign, but not a mosque. This was most likely because of Islamophobia, which created a climate where he felt it necessary to keep a distance from American Muslims.
American Muslims are grateful for the steps President Obama has taken to lessen hostilities abroad. He banned torture, ordered the closing of Guantanamo Bay and the CIA's secret interrogation centers.
The last presidential administration treated American Muslims as virtual enemies of the state, discouraged our civic involvement and suppressed our voices. We were isolated and essentially shunned. In this new era of change, however, it is vital to U.S. interests to engage American Muslims as partners in building relationships with the Muslim world. This is not only a matter of respect, but one of common interests.
American Muslims are a global village made up of diverse communities of African-Americans and immigrants from many nations. Among Muslims, they are one of the largest groups of highly educated professionals in the world.
Tens of thousands are physicians and surgeons. Others serve in higher education. Many proudly serve in the U.S. military. I personally know of at least six Muslims in Chicago who played critical roles in key Muslim governments. Many are directly connected with the ruling elites of the countries of their birth.
Part of the change that American Muslims hope for is to be valued as an asset by their country rather than viewed as suspects. We long for a president who will welcome our voices and our public service. Nearly 3,000 prayer locations, mosques and Islamic centers serve an estimated six million Muslims in the United States. We invite our president to stand with us publicly and vigorously in the struggle against Islamophobia - the bigotry he tasted during his campaign http://www.smearcasting.com/case_secret.html and that we experience daily.
Although American Muslims delivered the second largest block vote for President Obama after African-Americans, (79% http://www.muslimwestfacts.com/mwf/116461/Muslim-Americans-National-Port... according to Gallup) hardly any Muslims have been appointed in the current administration
Muslims are not looking for handouts. We're simply striving for equal opportunity and inclusiveness. That will give a far better message to the Muslim world than speeches.
The choice of a U.S. mosque for the President's address would affirm what he stated at his inauguration: that Muslims are part of the fabric of our nation. More importantly, it would acknowledge that the key to repairing relations between America and the Muslim world are those who know both best: American Muslims.

I need 25 cents. I could get it by sticking a tooth under my pillow.

Post-Constitutional America
The only people Obama appears with in the US are force-and-violence oriented organizations such as the Marines, AIPAC, Naval academy, and the Columbus, OH police dept. Notre Dame being an elite "pro-life" institution (with an ROTC program) was not an exception.
Obama was, early in his political career, very close to the Arab-American community. No more.
Having distanced himself from, not only Arab-Americans, but his own African-American pastor and church, it is unlikely he'll appear before Code Pink or a Muslim congregation.
Hey, there might yet still be an answer to all of this 'fighting over God'. Set up an "inter galactic council", invite all the "mental wizards" from all of the "faiths"--and of course the other 'Planets'--and give them the ultimatum.
Prove that "God" exists, once and for all.
Or "Shut up about it", don't "bother others with it", and keep your opinions to your self.
How's that for an answer.
Personally, I would worry about a "God" that needed so much help from so many human beings
AIPAC disagrees.
Remember that Obama's greatest and possibly only strength is spouting hot-air, admittedly in the form of glorious, well-rounded but otherwise meaningless sentences. The more this gigantic blabbermouth gives speeches the less the remainder of the world trusts him. Words are cheap.
I pointed out the truth two years ago: Obama is a dyed-in-the-wool imperialist.
He is about to suffer a humiliating defeat by Pakistan which is about to sign an agreement with Iran for the direct delivery of Iranian gas, albeit not yet to through Pakistan to India. The vaunted Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India, the darling of the Pentagon, is dead. This is at the level the nationalization of the Suez Canal by Nasser.
If this speech is like the others he has given it will be condescending. He will be telling Muslims to practice their own religion better. Presumably he'll be doling out millions to the tyrant Mubarek, tweaking on Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, plotting to overthrow Hizbollah , bombing the Taliban, and continuing to squeeze the Iranians all the while.
Don't forget, he's already disavowed the Rev. Wright so what should that tell you?
Maybe someone ought to tell Obama to practice HIS religion better,no?
I'm with you pfgetty.
And as a Muslim Citizen of the World, if Obama cannot by any volition of his own shake off the corporate dogs hanging from his coattails, then I will speak for the Muslims of the world in telling him to go suck it.

My consideration is Creator is watching & listening to us all here upon planet earth. Perhaps Creator considers us all to be weird? I don't know? Perhaps Creator is amused if any us think we own him? I don't know?
For me life is simple. I just live in my symbolic Tipi in symbolic Turtle Island, pay my bills, go to the store, and render unto Caesar what is Caesars.
All I know is my friend Old Mr. Death is creeping up on me each second of day that I am alive & once I leave this world I will no longer our European's friend's God of Paper to live or have to render unto Caesar anymore?
Already sounds like Heaven to me.
I do wonder if Jesus knew, when he said, Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's & unto God what is God's, that while it may look like Caesar is building some really grand swell worldly paradise upon the earth all it will do long run is turn into Hell on Earth?
Jesus actually did not go about killing people. Jesus went about warning people. What organized or even un-organized Religions did in his name is a far different thing altogether so I never joing anyone's Religion & especially not if they are talking about killing people.
A Buddist friend of mine was talking about UFO's. I said historically the Prophet Ezekiel said he was visited by or had a vision of being visited by some kind of Chariot & after than had a vision of the Abominations of Israel in those days.
Like I discuss with people the Hopi prophecy of this land being pretty much burnt off the face of the earth by man made fire, but the Hopi did not seek the worldly knowledge to invent such things as they would think people who would invent such things to be pretty stupid. So I consider them to be smart.
Then I wonder if such things are perversion of Creator's atomic structure & an abomination before Creator? I don't know but I do consider such things.
As the prophecies of Mystery Babylon read a lot like the Hopi Prophecies, and according to that prophecy Mystery Babylon is an utter abomination before Creator/God.
Whoever Mystery Babylon is in prophecy Creator does not like at all & she is an utter abomination before Creator/God.
I consider Creator has already seen all things from beginning to end so I am not concerned about these things at all.
Life is good. What an experience! It's always best to forgive.
Can Obama engage American Muslims in the peaceful way that seems implied here while waging a hot war against 3 Muslim countries? Even Darth Cheney insisted that the US did not fight Islam per se.
I can see that there might might be some value in a still-popular American president making a gesture of endorsement for the community so that people with dark beards can return to airports. But I'm having trouble imagining what message would not be overwhelmingly hypocritical coming from Obama.
Meanwhile, let's at least hope that Obama does not engage American Muslims militarily.
