Islamofascism Awareness Week: Anti-Muslim Smearcasting On Campus
"Islamofascism Awareness Week" is back on college campuses across the nation this week.
Organized by David Horowitz, who has a documented record of spreading hysteria and bigotry against Muslims, and featuring other noted anti-Muslim bigots, the week would seem to have little to do with promoting "awareness." The central theme of the first IFAW, held on campuses across the U.S. in October 2007, was the "oppression of women under Islam." How did Horowitz et al express their concern for the "plight of Muslim women"? By featuring talks by Ann Coulter, who has stated that the U.S. "would be a much better country if women did not vote", and has called Muslims "ragheads." IFAW's pro-women position was additionally manifest in calling on students to sit-in and picket women's studies departments (because of course feminists support the oppression of women!).
Some people were so confused by Horowitz's message that at Michigan State University a sympathetic student group hosted an actual fascist guest speaker, Nick Griffin--the leader of the racist British National Party--during IFAW.
Featuring a line-up of guest speakers whom the media-watch group FAIR has named the nation's top anti-Muslim "smearcasters" (see the full report at www.smearcasting.com), IFAW 08 promises to bring students another heavy serving of hypocrisy.
First there is Horowitz himself, whose anti-Muslim and anti-Arab writings at Horowitz's FrontPage Magazine have been exposed for inaccuracy (New Yorker, 4/14/08). At the University of California at Santa Barbara, he is known for denouncing students for wearing green (he accused them of supporting Hamas), and wearing Arab Keffiyehs (for Horowitz, wearing the traditional Arab scarf is apparently as tantamount to honoring terrorism) (Santa Barbara Independent, 5/15/08).
Robert Spencer, a featured guest speaker of IFAW 08, is the founder of the notoriously Islamophobic website Jihad Watch. Specializing in one-sided interpretations of Islam, he has been widely criticized by respected Islamic scholars such as Louay M. Safi, Khaleel Mohammed and Carl Ernst (one scholar has dubbed Spencer "the principal leader...in the new academic field of Islam-bashing").
Then there is Daniel Pipes, whose "expertise" on Islam has included erroneously linking the Oklahoma City bombing to Islamic groups (USA Today, 4/20/95), and warning that (National Review, 11/19/90) "Western European societies are unprepared for the massive immigration of brown-skinned peoples cooking strange foods and maintaining different standards of hygiene.... All immigrants bring exotic customs and attitudes, but Muslim customs are more troublesome than most."
Steven Emerson, another featured speaker of IFAW 08, is a "terrorism expert" with a long record of being wrong. Emerson erroneously blamed the Oklahoma City bombing on Middle Eastern groups (CBS Evening News, 4/19/95), and has in more recent years taken to accusing the State Department of collaborating with extremists because it is doing outreach to mainstream American Muslim groups.
With a line-up of speakers so clearly geared towards promoting anti-Muslim smears rather than raising awareness, many students will undoubtedly see straight through Horowitz's hoax. In fact, last year it turned out that many campuses Horowitz had listed as participating in IFAW were reportedly not actually participating in Horowitz's Muslim-bashing week. When contacted by the Anti-Arab Discrimination Committee, many reportedly asked to be taken off of Horowitz's list of participating institutions.
Sadly, many major corporate news producers and editors do not seem to be so wise.
Robert Spencer is a favorite on Fox News and on CNN Headline News' Glenn Beck show. Despite his long record of error, Steve Emerson continues to be cited on NBC, CNN, and in the New York Times as an expert on "Islamic terrorism." And Daniel Pipes' writing has been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Time magazine, while he has been praised by CBS as being "years ahead of the curve in identifying the threat of radical Islam."
IFAW's "must-see" movie--the anti-Muslim propaganda "documentary" Obsession--has been shown in full on Fox News, with clips also shown and raved about by CNN, and it was recently delivered to some 28 million newspaper subscribers as an advertising supplement by some 70 newspapers across the country.
In short, news consumers have been subjected to "Islamofascism Awareness" for years! It's time to wise up, speak out and de-list from the media's year-round IFAW.

Show AllWhat's good for the goose is good for the gander. Hwow about Christofascism Awareness Week?
You don't think that exists in Saudi Arabia?
Indeed, in the House of Saud from Mecca to Medina, they reserve the 2nd week of every leap year, every university has their calenders synched as to not interfere with prayer times. Quite a hit from what I hear.
Twit!!~!

.Hatred is such a useful emotion for controlling folks..Just look at how it has served to control you.

To be exact, no, there is no such thing there.
Does that quell your worries?
Now, I've heard that that an "Islamofascist Awareness" club might be starting up at my uni. If it does happen, I might look into starting a "Christofacist Awareness" club just so people like you can rest assured that the reality they think exists, actually does end up existing-- right here.
I am sure the Christians will pay at LEAST as much attention to your club as the Jews did to the Mad Mullah's "Holocaust Cartoon Show" last year in Tehran...
.Nice distortion of the actual words spoken there...

"Denouncing students for wearing green"? Boy, St. Patrick's Day must be quite an experience for the dude.
Yeah there's a Young Israel center showing Obsession here at school this weekend. I plan on protesting it. maybe since I'm Jewish any Christian fundies that go to watch it won't attack me so much?
Thank you Zach P. You are just what we need. Clear-headed courageous Judeo-Christians who stand up and say NOT IN MY NAME!
I used to think the same thing too.
However....
....it was a fundie Christian who called my a "self loathing Jew" because I refused to support Israel's illegal policies and go along with the Islam bashing. Then he screamed at me "I bet you eat pork chops, don't you?!" No I don't but I do enjoy the occasional cheeseburger.
That being said it's not only fundamentalists that concern me it's also the ultra-Zionists. I haven't seen the inside of a temple in 2 years because of the reaction to my outspokeness on Israel.
Mmm. I go for bacon cheeseburgers :-)
As for temple, my temple is awesome, it's a Reform synagogue. When I was very young and through to a little past my Bar Mitzvah, we had a lesbian assistant rabbi. Our current cantor is a gay British guy. It doesn't get more tolerant than that. But I haven't been there in forever.
.There are extremists in every walk of life, just look at Red Sox fans!
My Bar Mitzvah was held at an orthodox synagogue, many, many, many years ago...I do not practice that religion any more but not because of a few radicals who do, they are found everywhere.

Typical hatemongering propagandists. I'm not surprised that these guys would be fan favorites on Glen Beck. I've only been able to stomach a couple minutes at a time of that guy, but from what I've seen, he should be a defendant in the war crimes trial with Hannity and Limbaugh.
The US electorate has fallen for fear and greed election campaign tactics for several decades. Islamofascism is without substance and simply another weapon in the fear arsenal.
Although I don't hold much hope, I continue to hope the US electorate surprises me on Nov. 4 and doesn't fall for fear and greed AGAIN.
I think that, instead of protesting against Christian nutcases, I will go to Egypt and walk around with my prophet mohammed in a bomb turban T-Shirt and a Danish flag. I am sure they will respect my freedom of speech....
Difference is images of the Prophet are forbidden in and of themselves, whatever he is depicted doing.
Bad analogy. Try going into a nutcase "evangelist" church wearing a "Who would Jesus bomb?" T-Shirt and waving a Chinese flag.
I'm SURE they will respect your freedom of speech.
Excellent analogy! You win!
I'm sure our democratic elections are 100% fair. Just like elections in Pakistan or Palestine where propaganda videos of Judeo-Christian fascism are distributed widely.
I got an anti-Islam DVD in the mail "Obsession: the rise of Islamo-fascism" where they compare Muslims to Hitler's Nazi's.
Meanwhile, the Muslim nations have zero military bases built all over the world while America has 750 active military bases in foreign countries. Who's paranoid?
"every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that I (Jesus) am your Lord and personal saviour." (a very common scripture read frequently all across America).
Who is trying to take over the world, them or us?

The evangelists probably won't kill you though ....
WTF are you inferring, please? This shit is tired, I've fucking had it with the ignorance of those aka dumbed down, thinking they are a damn laugh riot with their innuendo, 1/64th of an inch below the surface hate speak, tired of assinine comments from persons that rail on about the Occupant @ 1600 yet piss on the Constitution when it suits them, the First, bligh4, the First!
If you are ignorant of World Religion's leave it alone, you are as those in the crowds as the Murderess of Animals for sport whips the watchers of FOX scream, "Terrorist!, KILL HIM!, Off with his Head!". When I had to endure post 9/11 frenzy that caused citizens to literally murder a human being because they 'thought he looked like a Muslim', berate, terrorize, demonize and humiliate my 9 year old daughter because she is Muslim I knew then this nation was forever lost, you allow this to never have and end.

Bill of rights,
I would respond if I knew what the heck you were talking about. Take a deep breath, and calm down. My daughter plays with a Muslim girl and I certainly have never tried to berate, or humiliate her. ( I save the embarrassing for my daughter, which is one the the benefits of having a 14 year old).
Sorry for your daughter, if some idiot or some kid said something unkind to her. Wasn't me.
"Sorry for your daughter, if some idiot or some kid said something unkind to her. Wasn't me."
But you keep supporting such societal intolerances even though indirectly. Time to come clean or you're part of the problem.
bligh4
O.K. Johnson, now I don't know what the heck YOU are talking about. You know, that part of me being the "problem". Or is that something like "You're either with us or against us"?
"You're either with us or against us"?
Is that what you tried to force on your 14 year old daughter? I guess she luckily outwitted you.
Wow, you really do have a tolerance problem, don't you? You'd embarass your own daughter for trying to get along with good people regardless of race, religion, etc ...? I hope your daughter leaves you alone completely or she'll never see the light of day.

Thank you Jason, for once again misrepresenting my views. I meant "embarrasing" her in a general sense- and in a joking manner- like last week when I picked her up from school while I was wearing a Hawiian shirt that she rolled her eyes over.
Of course a dogmatic, humorless person might get the wrong idea .... I guess.

Instead they will condemn you to hell, which in their mind is far worse than simply killing you. There are psycho preachers that come to my campus every now and then. This one time, they had a kid handing out some literature, I declined it, saying I wasn't Christian. This kid, he looked about 10, said without hesitation "You're going to wish you're Christian when you're burning in hell, sir." So do not assume that Muslims are alone in teaching their children to hate people of other religions.
I piss on the prophet. Images of his child molesting self are not prohibited to ME. And certainly not in America.
As to going into church with a bunch of snake handlers and insulting Jesus, I somehow doubt they would riot, kill hundreds, and make a video of my beheading.
.Of course , when one has a born again christian in the White House who has perpetrated acts of torture and murder almost unprecendented, your remarks are perceptive and timely ( errr not at all).....
.

My great-grandparents tried to assimilate into the Austro-Hungarian society in the late XIXth Century and early XXth. Quite successfully. Then, my Grandparents were hated during the 30s, Numerus Clausus applied to my Parents at university, and were taken to Auschwitz in 1944 and after the war even the commies hated us...
My Parents have renounced religion, and so have I.
I have become tolerant of people and their behaviour, as no scripture dictates my views. I don't mind homosexuals, I don't care for divorce, I don't even care for polygamy (be it Muslim or Mormon). If a woman wants abortion, I say: it's her body and conscience.
I don't box people in because they believe in a certain deity or deities. I don't care for people who go to church every Sunday, or observe Shabes. Each to its own.
I don't care if people dress up in a burnus and jellabah, wear a sarong or go topless. And really, how ridiculous does a Hasidic Jew look in his getup???!
Christians? All I see is that they hate even each other: Northern Ireland, anyone? Arabs? Where is their unity??? All they agree upon is the hate of Americans and Jews.
Atheism? Not sure... Dialectic materialism is quite logical, but maybe our sould needs some food, so maybe I am agnostic
Good post, toad_goddess! So, why you're agnostic? To leave all options open? Pascal's wage in a case?

Islamofascism Awareness Week?
Isn't former Marxist David Horowitz a fascist himself?
This person must have a kinda radical gene, either extreme left of extreme right.
This guy is so full of hate-filled lies. One of many examples
v.p. I think all religions are some kind of phylosophy, trying to explain our being; the reasons mainly, but also trying to justify our imagined superiority. The philosophers have become with time the "gods". Their enemies the "satans" and their way of life the blueprint for the particular religion.
Well, I do believe in a superior being, but it is far from benevolent. I also believe that we, the Earth, maybe even the Universe is a giant experience. What happens when you let emotions and instincts run amok.
I dare not think that we are in the last stages of the experience...
As for any extremists: they should be silenced by being ridiculed. I've found that ridicule works best in silencing or at least marginalizing silly nonsense spouted by angry men
Islamofascism is an oxymoron, a total contradiction of terms IMO. Islamic societies have in fact been the most successful in keeping out global corporate entities like YumYumKFCTacoPizzaBellHut, McDonalds, or Wal-Mart. Fascism is rule by big business (as defined by the coiner of the term, Mussolini) not some umbrella, generic term for authoritarian socially-oppressive regimes. If anything, the Islamic societies are the most anti-fascist in the world. Now the post-millennial "Christian Dominion" crowd, however, fits the bill perfectly. Post-millennials believe that Jesus won't make his second appearance until after Christians establish one-world government/business and keep it for 1000 years!
"Freewill and proof of the existence of God cannot co-exist in the same Universe"
"All that is, is metaphor"
"There are extremists in every walk of life, just look at Red Sox fans!"
LOL
This Horowitz creep has been making an irritation of himself for decades, now. He's convinced that the LIBRULS are discriminating against (rabid)Conservatives at colleges because so few of them are given tenure, never noticing that they are if anything, over-represented vis. their numbers in the Population.
A neighbor of mine who once was a fan of David Horowitz sent him a letter asking him what he thought about the prospect of winning against them Muslim terrorists he complains about by legalizing hemp for fuel and ending our reliance on oil from the Mideast especially the Saudi royal elites and Iraq. Horowitz, unfortunately, shot back at my neighbor with a life-threatening letter lying about hemp being some "dangerous evil" and even going so far as to saying that "The Saudis are helping America win the war on terror" ! My neighbor was very disappointed and has since given up her redneck ways. Even her husband has turned from "conservative" to independent but liberal and he cannot tolerate people who would put his or his wife's life on the line.
It's really shameful that a descendant of the people vilified and almost wiped out by the Nazi extermination machine should apply the same hateful thinking and speech to America's Muslims. Freedom of speech is one thing, but hate speech like this would not be allowed in a country that actually valued freedom.
As JK October elucidated earlier, "Islamofascism" is a contradiction in terms. Islam has amongst the most stringent anti-usury provisions of any major monotheistic religion (google "Islamic banking"), while fascism is the concentration of state power under a unitary party controlled by an all powerful executive to benefit business interests. David Horowitz is a former 60's radical who switched sides and cashed in. His income depends upon putting on a good show that gets attention. The best thing that could happen is his fading into obscurity.
