Death Threat, Vandalism Hit ACORN After Accusations
WASHINGTON -- An ACORN community organizer received a death threat and the liberal-leaning voter registration group's Boston and Seattle offices were vandalized Thursday, reflecting mounting tensions over its role in registering 1.3 million mostly poor and minority Americans to vote next month.
Attorneys for the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now were notifying the FBI and the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division of the incidents, said Brian Kettenring, a Florida-based spokesman for the group.
Republicans, including presidential candidate John McCain, have verbally attacked the group repeatedly in recent days, alleging a widespread vote-fraud scheme, although they've provided little proof. It was disclosed Thursday that the FBI is examining whether thousands of fraudulent voter-registration applications submitted by some ACORN workers were part of a systematic effort or isolated incidents.
Kettenring said that a senior ACORN staffer in Cleveland, after appearing on television this week, got an e-mail that said she "is going to have her life ended."
A female staffer in Providence, R.I., got a threatening call from someone who said words to the effect of "We know you get off work at 9," then uttered racial epithets, he said.
McClatchy Newspapers is withholding the women's names because of the threats.
Separately, vandals broke into the group's Boston and Seattle offices and stole computers, Kettenring said.
The incidents came the day after McCain charged in the final presidential debate that ACORN's voter-registration drive "may be perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history" and may be "destroying the fabric of democracy."
McCain's comments provoked a response from ACORN.
"I would not say that Senator McCain is inciting violence," Kettenring said, "but I would say that his statements about the role of this manufactured scandal were totally outlandish. We would call on Senator McCain to tamp down the fringe elements in his party."
McCain's campaign didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
Kettenring said that ACORN had received growing amounts of hate mail in recent weeks, but "the campaign debate sort of tipped it over to a scary point, where raising allegations of voter fraud went from a cynical campaign ploy to really inciting racial violence."
Since McCain's remarks, ACORN's 87 offices across the country have received hundreds of hostile e-mails, many of them containing racial slurs, Kettenring said. "We believe that these are specifically McCain supporters" sending the messages, he said.
The e-mail to the Cleveland employee was traced to a Facebook Web page in the name of a Baltimore man. It featured a photo of a McCain-Palin sign.
Kettenring said that the bulk of the e-mails had been either "flat-out racist" or had racial overtones. Most of the group's 400 members and about 80 percent of the 13,000 voter-registration canvassers are African-American or Latino.
It's unclear whether the alleged threats violated federal law, but Jonah Goldman, the director of the National Campaign for Fair Elections at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a nonpartisan, nonprofit legal organization that battles discrimination, argued that the Voting Rights Act should apply.
"A real concern is the impact that these terrible acts have on the people who registered through these registration drives," Goldman said. "Legitimate, eligible voters who sign up through these registration drives may be understandably intimidated and choose not to show up at the polls, and the Voting Rights Act prevents voter intimidation."

Show AllIt won't be long until McCain and Palin begin converting their rallies into book burnings.
Demand proof, or sue for slander. If there is any truth to McCain's accusation, root out the problem. ACORN has a long and honorable history, and deserves far better than the treatment it has received from the McCain campaign/media.
I see the Repungnat Hateful Sexually Repressed NEOCON Christian Right Holier than Thou Fascist Fanactics are back at work.
Coffeelover,,,,,, did I leave anything out?
bible thumpers?
It seems to me that all this proves is that there as many nuts among that bunch as there are among the Animal Rights bunch, the Anti-Abortion groups, enviornmentalists, the Radicals left and right, etc.
Thre are just some nuts out there.
Half of America doesn't bother to vote once. How will you get people to vote many times when it is a lot easier to just fix the count? How much would you have to pay to get people to risk long jail terms?
These charges are 99.44% BS. There are more cases of suspicious counts than suspicious votes.
No one has explained the thousands of elderly Jewish votes for Pat Buchanan from 2000 in Florida. Do you think there were Nazi multiple voters or a fixed count? Even old Pat denied the possibility that those votes were really for him.
Unfortunately, this whole ACORN episode is a high farce of multiple crooks and interweaving plot lines.
First some facts about ACORN - coming straight from my brother who worked for ACORN in Louisiana in the 1990's and is also familiar with ACORN in Pittsburgh. He has no political agenda, and his credentials as a leftist and an activist, Catholic Worker and anarcho-syndicalist are impeccable.
Basically, ACORN, with rich boss Wade Rathke at the top, is a crooked, top-down enterprise with rich, predominantly white people running things at the top and underpaid predominantly black poor from the neighborhoods they are supposedly serving at the bottom. They largely exist to exploit donors (United Way, CFC, philanthropy) at one end, and the poor at the other.
Embezzlement, cheating it's workers, and unaccountability are rife within the organization.
BUT, conspiracy to commit electoral fraud is probably the one crime they are not committing! The right-wing "electoral fraud" claims are just a big Katrina-in-at-teapot.
The phoney ACORN registrations are the result of the low-wage, piece-work paid system they use to gather voter registrations. Gathering genuine voter registrations is hard work, and the people hired to do this work have lived under hundreds of years of poverty and racism, where earnest, hard work virtually never paid. ACORN continues this tradition by cheating them with low pay and paychecks that bounce. So they cheat too - making up names and addresses on the voter cards to meet their quota. However, here is NO evidence, or any credible reason to believe that this is part is of an elaborate scheme to commit electoral fraud; that is, having people vote multiple time under these nonexistent voter names, which would also require forged ID's that are needed for first time voters. The main reason we can be sure of this is simply because ACORN is a money making outfit, and with the old Chicago-style machines long gone, there is no money in electoral fraud.
What a sad situation we are in! Because when ACORN goes down (along with the similarly crooked Andy Stern/Hoffa Jr.-led SEIU/Teamsters/Change to Win gang) They will bring a lot of honest activists, and those chapters of the above organizations who are honest, down with them.
There are NO good guys in this fight - the Republicans, the FBI and ACORN are all crooks and enemies of progress.
Fox News has a new show starring Governor Huckleberry. Last night he interviewed two young African Americans who had been "registered" by Acorn wotkes almost 100 times between the two of them. This was then cited as an example of systematic democratic voter fraud... (It followed Plumber Joe and his not getting a straight answer from Obama about his future taxes. Then there was a promo about Hannity exposing Obama as a communist and terrorist because of his association with W Ayers.) BTW, I've lost all respect for Huckabee. He's just another shill, but with a warm smile and easy going folksy demeanor.
Its a shame the demos haven't controlled this better. It plays right into the Rovian exploitation of anything and everything.
What will Fox talk about ater Obama wins? If they keep up the present tone and focus, they could be called seditious.
My elderly Dad watches Fox almost all the time. A year ago they had him convinced we need to bomb Iran. Now its Acorn's campaign for fair mortgage lending practices has brought down Wall Street!
Yes, but on election day, those people who registered multiple times (probably at the same address every time) will vote only once. So this isn't voter fraud!
It reflects the corruption and incompetence of the ACORN managers, but why should conservatives be so keen on ACORN being a well run organization. It would be all just high comedy if it wasn't so effective!
I'll bet you get ALL your news from Faux Noise.
As soon as I saw that Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama I turned on FOX news and all they could do was bad mouth Colin Powell. Hilarious.
Powell has been totally bought and paid for. I respect his judgement (after the fiasco at the UN--with the little bottle) not at all!
He helped to convince our rep. to enter this war!! He squandered his credability on that.
I try to imagine what the reaction would be if one of McCain's campaign headquarters was broken into, vandalized and computers were stolen. The FBI would, no doubt, swoop down and conduct a dragnet.
It's also instructive to know that the FBI program Cointelpro (Counter Intelligence Program) conducted break-ins and stole files and records back in the 60's and as late as the 90's activists' offices were broken into and computers were stolen containing mailing lists and other sensitive information.
Then there's Sarah Palin's denunciation of "community organizers" in the pejorative much as the word "liberal" was used as a pejorative term. The closest historical analogy would be Senator Joe McCarthy's communist witch hunts back in the 1950's.
When you have a successful grass roots organization like ACORN organizing poor people to claim their birth right to vote it's only natural that the ruling elites will do everything in their power to thwart and intimidate any movement seeking to challenge the "right to rule" of the ruling elites.
I'm starting to think we need to add the GOP to the 'people who need arresting' list. Talk about Un-American.
Why are the wealthiest politicians democrats? Why are dems the party of wealth and elitism?

Well, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being wealthy in of itself. But to be wealthy while promoting socialistic ideology, which most Democrats do, reeks of hypocrisy.
They have effectively fooled the masses into thinking that they will somehow transfer other people's wealth to them. So they keep voting for those who promise the most goodies. Meanwhile their assets are well protected and off limits.
Personally I think those in elected office should not be allowed to invest in stocks, it's a conflict of interest and they do not have to report for 2 years. We have to report our trades immediately. They have the power to promote or punish certain businesses with regulations and tax laws.
You wonder why Congress wants to bail out the banks? They are heavily invested in them.
Vote Libertarian!!
I am accepting your facts on faith, and see the hypocrisy.
I am not sure that your conclusion follows.
But, I dont "believe " in the stock market , anyway.
The entire Libertarian philosophy is that all state assistance, in any form, encourages people to be lazy by rewarding those without the drive to become wealthy. Not only is government assistance derided, but the people who have been commonly downtrodden, those who are largely invisible, are derided also. Libertarianism is an assault on all communal values whatsoever in favor of those who love the law when it protects them from the poor and hate it when it is used to help sustain common bonds.
So for a Libertarian to be pointing the finger at those wealthy people who believe that they are morally obliged to enter public service to attempt to help those who are economically & socially outcast is ridiculous.
Larry King asked Bill Maher why guys like Joe Wortselbacher [sp], who aren't wealthy, think that tax increases on the wealthiest will hurt them. Maher's response was that "they live in Republican Fantasy Land, where one day they'll be wealthy too." Libertarianism is cuckoo-land click-your-heels infomercial economic & political absurdity.
When you want to drown "Government" in the bathtub, you mainly drown real live people.
To call Democrats Socialists is an insult to Socialism.
But I agree on everything else, completely. Except for the vote Libertarian part. Vote Nader!
You forgot to include the Republicans. Besides, real Libertarians wouldn't be giving bailouts to Wall Street or spending in endless wars.
Nietzsche
The Republican Party has been in the process of becoming a terrorist organization for nearly forty years now, at least since Nixon.
An American civil war would be more in the nature of a slave revolt. When the richest 1% has more than the poorest 90% all competition, in the form of business, grinds to a halt. The poor can borrow until their credit becomes worthless. That is the present situation.
What are their choices? Giving us more money with which to buy? No. Loan us more money? No.
The only way they can keep getting richer is for us to work more hours for less money. For those not already in slavery, they soon will be. When we become so poor that our lives are not worth living, then we will revolt.
Many are not far off. What if we are too weak then?
Apparently non of the posters here have bothered to read about the FBI voter fraud investigations in 8 states against ACORN. There is nothing wrong in going out and registering people to vote, legally. I know most of you "progressives" would just love it if all the ILLEGAL aliens in the US could vote, WHAT PART OF ONLY U.S. CITIZENS CAN LEGALLY VOTE DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND? This is not the first time ACORN has been accused of voter fraud but this time they are really trying to stuff the ballot box. You "progressives" screamed foul when you claimed the supreme court supposedly gave the 2000 election to bush, will you scream foul just as loud when ACORN stuffs the ballot box for obama? I didn't think so. Turn the situation around, ACORN is registering homeless people multiple times, dead people, illegal aliens and in some cases non existent people and animals FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, ambiguous-future would you still call it "domestic terrorism instigated by the rants of" obama / biden? I thought not. Would Humbaba call it Democratic "'Brown Shirts' at work again, eh?" Most definitely not.
As a Libertarian I look at your posts and see it is YOU the "progressives" who are the Red Guard, Brown Shirts and Political Terrorists.
Sigh, you're right, the FBI is involved...because ACORN advised them of the situation! They found out that some paid workers had filled out some cards fraudulently and ACORN did what they should have done.
Hey schmuck, have you read that ACORN is required by law to turn in all registration forms it collects, no matter what they have on them? They try to flag the ones that are no good. Why don't you read about how GOP SecStates of various states are purging millions of voters? 10 million so far and counting...
I have nothing against Libertarians, but YOU are an idiot.
GOT ONE FOR YA! I can get more.(Unregistered commenter)
The name of the political group was Young Political Majors, not Young Party Majors.

I wanted to make everyone aware of the Young Party Majors organization. YPM is a firm hired by the Republican Party to register voters. They are paid $7 to $10 for each voter registered. In California, voters who were told they were signing a petition to create stiffer sentences for child molesters were tricked into switching their registration to Republican. Some were told they had to become Republicans to vote for the measure. Others were plainly duped into switching. Some were asked to sign a separate piece of paper after signing the petition, which was probably the registration form. This won’t affect their ability to vote Democratic in the election, but they will not receive Democratic campaign literature and cannot vote Democratic in future primaries. YPM is under investigation in Florida and Massachusetts and is the target of a civil rights lawsuit in Arizona.
Correction: Young Political Majors
Bout damn time that somebody with some clout took on the Repugs and their crooked
antics on
Do you have any documentation for any of this? Or do you just want to act like a badass.
This appears to be domestic terrorism instigated by the rants of McCain/Palin. Contact you local media outlets and let know that this should not be swept aside and should receive the same serious consideration as any other act of terrorism.
This may sound silly, but it is just an example.
I was at a blog yesterday at Truth Dig-in the thread about Ohio voter fraud, and some OSU student was in there ranting about minority voting from "people who dont even pay their bills and stuff", an kept referring people to posts on his college blog to back up his statements.
I called him on it(as anyone here knows, I am NOT a strong supporter of Obama) (I am extremely humiliated by what people are trying to do in Ohio again and it is pissing me off), and---he posts my name, add. , phone and a MAP to my house. He said he was "coming over to have a beer". But he didnt say it liek that.
I got a EMAIL from teh WEBMASTER (!!) that my "language " was not correct--cussing, I guess. I said "what about the map to my house??" He finally took it down, but the guy called me several times (my boyfriend was here) and keep sending me "perosnal mails" through TD.
That is nothing, but, guess what --it will get worse!
You dont have to be a strong Obama suppoerter to be hassled--all you have to do is advocate for minority's votes to be counted!
I'm afraid it will get worse as things in general get worse. I've been in a similar situation, KDelphi, and yes, it was from a right-winger. While there are wing-nuts of every persuasion, it seems like the ones on the right show their displeasure through threats and violence.
The worst thing we can do, however, is to stop doing what we're doing. They are reacting this way because they are threatened, and I think they sense their days are numbered. We need to keep working to make that a reality.
Racism in this country is suddenly, alarmingly, out-of-control. I can't believe what I'm hearing.
Ive have worked for the State Police for 24 years and now I see the conservative movement going up to high gear to start riots/unrest to scare voters, to changed the election outcome with intimidation/fear. Remember the "night of the broken glass"!!!
God save democracy and a free society.
It's terrible what the GOP is up to. The Democrats should speak out about it. Obama should address it, I don't know why he doesn't.

I guess McDuck never heard of Diebold.
Republican 'Brown Shirts' at work again, eh?
Where is the Red Guard when we need them...

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. cheneybush needs only the flimsiest excuse to declare martial law. The labor camps are ready and waiting. Even if there is an election and Obama wins, cheneybush has until Jan. 20 to act.
The human race, put a fork in it, it's done.
There is no way to Peace. Peace is the Way.
It looks like the losers are coming out in full force showing their hatred. Typical rightwing nazism. I can't wait for the rightwing trolls to spew this topic and go out of their ways to defend these violent criminals.
Terrorism is defined as the use of violence or the threat of violence against non-combatants (civilians) for political ends.
These death threats clearly meet the definition of terrorism. But will the media refer to these acts of terrorism as acts of terrorism? I somehow doubt it.

New ad: McCain supporters are terrorists...so McCain palls around with terrorists! I wonder if anyone would air that.
"I somehow doubt it."
Yeah, me too. But maybe we'll get lucky and be proven wrong.
Velvet Revolution has today announced at $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for break-ins at the ACORN offices in Dorchester, MA and Burien, WA. If you have any information about these crimes, please contact Chris Leonard or Mimi Ramos of ACORN at (617) 436-7100.
See this blog item at the Velvet Revolution Election Protection Strike Force site for the announcement.
Conservative violence.
Seems like senders of these emails could be prosecuted for hate crimes because of the racial slurs. And isn't threatening people's lives terrorism?
Like I said in a post yesterday, the time is near when these rabid hate mongers start another American civil war, not between the north and south, but between the right and left. How many deaths could already be attributed to their spread of venomous hatred that incites violence and destruction?
Why dont they (or we) secede? Not a shot would have to be fired.
You only need a civil awr, if one side wants to hang onto the other.
