When Will US "Journalism" Be Held Accountable for Promoting War?
Duh. The Bush Administration deployed a dishonest but very effective propaganda campaign to sell the Iraq War to the American people on virtually every media outfit. Their "Culture of Deception" is now acknowledged.
How do we know? Scotty McClellan told us so. It's all in the former Press Secretary's new book. And, happily, it's all over the news.
It's easy to put McClellan down. On the right he's a traitor. The President dismissed him as "sad." Karl Rove compared him to a left-wing blogger. Most of the real left-wing bloggers were equally contemptuous suggesting he's just trying to sell books, some asking: Why did he wait so long? Wasn't he part of the plot? Is this just the pot calling the kettle black?
Yes, but, at least, he had the courage, these many years later, to confirm what I and other have been saying for years. And he didn't avoid taking a poke at the media which did the Administration's job for them by carrying unverified claims as facts, while blocking out any other narrative. To his credit, McClellan called our media "deferential, complicit enablers."
He's not the first rat to jump ship and won't be the last. Think of him like the informants who turn on the mafia. The fact that a high profile former propagandist blew a whistle matters in the same way that it was a former Vietnam strategist named Daniel Ellsberg, who with Anthony Russo, exposed the Pentagon Papers. We all knew the government had lied then, but the Pentagon Papers explained how they did it. (The Papers came out in 1971; the war had been underway since l945.)
Ellsberg was branded a rat too. But without rats, prosecutors can't get convictions. In Ellsberg's case, he was the one convicted. Let's hope that in McClellan's case, we can get to the real criminals in the dock along with the many who collaborated with them.
To be honest, what's needed here are not more confessions by political insiders but an actual trial of the perpetrators. This government strategy, and the media coverage that served it, were not just mistakes or lapses in otherwise accurate coverage but crimes with real world consequences. Try a million dead in Iraq, and 4,000 Americans. And counting...
As I and others probed into the daily indifference to Iraqi suffering and the continuing orchestration of pro-war coverage, we came to see the problem not as continuously flawed reporting or even as a series of institutional failures, but in the same way as many whistleblowers tend to view the practices they expose -- as a crime.
Given the number of lives lost and the amount of money wasted, these were the moral equivalents of serious felonies. When crimes take place in other settings, eventually government officials step in. As the scandals become public, there are exposés and then prosecutions. In this case, it is the government committing the crime, and the media, in essence, covering it up.
Yes, media crimes rationalize war crimes. Both are shameful and worthy of indictment.
Official scrutiny of media practices rarely happens, partly because of Constitutional protections afforded journalists and media outlets, and partly because wronged parties have little recourse.
It's hard to fight back against media irresponsibility. Public shaming seems the only response, and its effectiveness depends on whether critics can be heard in the so-called public square. In the case of Iraq, there were 800 experts on all the channels in the run-up to the war. Only 6 opposed the war. No wonder judgments like this are left to historians.
After the Second World War at the Nuremberg Tribunal, American prosecutors wanted to put the German media on trial for promoting Hitler's policies. State propagandists were condemned. More recently, hate radio was indicted by the Rwanda tribunal investigating the genocide there, while in the former Yugoslavia, Serbian and Croatian TV were criticized for inciting a war that divided that country, encouraging murderous ethnic cleansing.
The principle that media outlets can, for reasons of omission or commission, be held responsible for their role in inflaming conflicts and promoting jingoism, has been well established. Many remember William Randolf Hearst's famous yellow journalism dictum: "You give me the pictures, I will give you the war."
In February 2005, Italy hosted the citizens-initiated World Tribunal on Iraq, which put the media "on trial" for its role in selling of the Iraq War. It was of course not covered here. The Tribunal was modeled on an earlier initiative during the Vietnam War by the then-leading international intellectuals Bertrand Russell, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone du Bouvoir. As a young journalist, I covered their sessions in Stockholm in 1967. I saw it as an act of conscience.
Most of the U.S. media saw it as an exercise in propaganda. Most of the charges they made then about U.S. war crimes are largely corroborated by the historical record even though only a few were reported when they occurred. I still remember watching CBS correspondent Morley Safer filming a stand-up in Stockholm, denouncing the Tribunal. Decades later, his "60 Minutes" returned to the scene of the My-Lai massacre interviewing former US soldiers who charged the U.S. military with the very war crimes Safer had dismissed when it mattered.
Critics today believe the media has covered up war crimes in Iraq, minimized civilian casualties, downplayed the destruction of cities like Fallujah, and misreported the reasons for going to war and how it was conducted. And they are right.
Will any of the "enablers" in TV news, or our leading newspapers, face consequences for their actions? I am not just talking about high profile journalists but their editors, producers, executives and proprietors.
Unlikely.
Many pro-war reports won awards; many of those who engineered the propagandistic "coverage" were promoted. Their patriotically-correct 'all the war, all the time' approach raised ratings and revenues. Some were hailed as heroes, critics dismissed as zeros. Dick Cheney even dropped into a post-invasion media dinner to thank them for their service.
Media companies were happily co-opted as embeds while naysayers like Peter Arnett were banished. Later, many reporters were killed and wounded while trying to tell a story that has now largely disappeared from view.
Has there been any outbreak of conscience in newsrooms over the last five years or, more importantly, any commitment to cover Iraq in a less jingoistic manner? Not that I can see, even though there is occasionally some "good" reporting. The title of the book by Editor & Publisher's Greg Mitchell sums it up: "So Wrong for So Long."
No wonder many of the outlets abandoning journalism for "mili-tainment" lost viewers and credibility.
So thank you Scotty, whatever your motives, for reopening the debate. (And thank the indy media and a few gutsy websites and mainstreamers for telling the truth.)
Now it's time to consider potential remedies even if we lack the power to enforce them. Our main media outlets have already been convicted in the global court of public opinion.

Add Lou Dobbs, Barbara Starr, and Glenn Beck to the rogues gallery of war criminals.
Treason is a crime. For any change in media bias, or the dispensation of IraqWar, change must occur in the Justice Dept. The courts will not hear what the AG does not indict. When last I checked the AG was an Israeli Jew. Additionally the investigative arm of BigGov, Homeland Security, is controlled by an Israeli Jew. The media reflects this racial bias. Since the voting process is controlled by the CorpPress, Americans who are dissatisfied with our system can stay/leave/speak impotently. There is no other better choice.
Dr. Jones and his peer reviewed paper points to only one thing. 911 was an inside job.
It is time to arrest the baby killing, war criminals for murder.
Time for "Lucky" Larry to return the insurance money and choose between the end of a rope or death inside a prison.
Time to freeze the war profiteer's bank accounts and seize their passports.
Patriots! Rise to defend the Constitution now before these rogues kill any more of us!
Simple Scotty McClellan WAS, and IS, a scum-sucking bottom-feeder! Just because he did something morally correct now that will make him millions of dollars, does not make him a good person.
I signed a petition over at MoveOn.org asking him to donate all proceeds from the book to a fund for Iraq veterans and the families of those who lost loved ones there. IF he does that, and I'm fairly sure he won't, he will rise by a few points in my opinion of him. But, I'm not holding my breath while I wait for that!
Let's start with the biggest, most "respected" newspapers--the New York Times and Washington Post. The Times, of course, had Judith Miller, who was shamelesly shilling for Chalabi. But they also had Thomas Friedman (aka Tommy Freedom)! And the Washington Post had, let's not forget, Bob Woodward. Of course, there were others. But these two were the biggies, and their opinions and writings were influential beyond belief. They are the first ones who should face retribution, because their moral burden was greater! MoveOn suggested that Scott McClellan give the profits of his new book to wounded war veterans. I think it would be even more fitting for Thomas Friedman and Bob Woodward to give ALL of the profits of their books since 9/11 to Veteran's Benefit groups. Of course, that will leave both still very rich men, but it would begin to right a wrong that has gone completely unaddressed!!!

I am sorry to disagree strongly with you. I happened to be acquainted with her work and charities. She was a pre-Fox newsperson too popular for them to toss when they bought KTVU. I vouch for her integrity, for what it's worth.
I find your questioning out of place unless you know facts that I am not aware of. She was not the only local news person let go ffor the same sentiments. The Bushies began sending polished 'goon' squads to sit in on editorial meetings and push the agenda - "The President would like to see the news presented this way, and, by the way, he will look with disfavor if this story is aired."
In the SF Bay Area(I cannot speak fo other venues), Jewish groups would deluge news directors with calls, e-mails, and letters anytime a story was neutral or positive about Islam, or anytime a story questioned the Bush propaganda. Heavy threats of pulling corporate advertising were included. This pressure was pushed down, especially at Fox, to the now news readers.
Who lied? Who died? Who pays? Who profits? Answer those questions and you'll appreciate "what happened?" even without reading the book. This St. Paul peace vigil paid tribute yesterday to Scotty-Come-Lately's admissions. If the horn honking was any indication, there are a number of people who believe that war crimes have been committed:

It is incredible that all circumstancial evidence supports HUGE AMOUNTS OF LYING TO THE WORLD TO START A CRIMINAL WAR FOR PROFIT and NOW WE HAVE WITNESSES and just because Nancy Pelosi says impeachment is off the table we are paralyzed here? Let's impeach her too!
Impeach Pelosi first for complicity to war crimes, then kick Bush's nastiness right smack over to the Hague!

"...the Internet took off and all over the country local news ratings dropped as viewers turned to the national networks for news from the war fronts..." -- Leslie Griffith
You distrust for Dan Rather would also be well placed in Leslie who you're selling. Local news ratings dropped at the same time the FCC began deregulation and mega corporations came to dominate local news. All manner of mega corporate news is being rejected, newspapers, local broadcasts, national networks... People got their fill of Fox Journalism apparently. That she doesn't mention the FCC, deregulation, and claims "we as journalists are about to regain our voices and America's trust...", speaks to her continued service to the financial dominant. Obomber's line is "change that can be believed..." or some such rhetorical garbage. Essentially the both of them are saying it'd be time to let the nukes fly if Americans decide to get uppity and start making demands. So long as they're willing to sit back and wait for the bogus journalists and the less obviously corrupt politicians to make things right, as long as there's a bunch of faith in murderers going on, then they'll keep building weapons with the US infrastructure.
Doesn't it just fit that her to be believed journalistic voice shows up in the new media of choice for The People...
I was unaware of that Tilman quote John C. I was also unaware he was in contact with Noam the turncoat Chomsky. Funny Noam hasn't had much to say about Pat since his brain was splattered by US troops.
bornfreemen!?!?
Are we really born free men? Or in reality are we born toothless, subject and dependent?
"according to recent court rulings." -- Arvy
What happens in court these days is not justice. Most of it is bought or corrupted at the legislative level. Some of the injustice in court is due unjust precedent. A lot of it is due bad parenting (of judges) and indoctrination to fascist ideology by the educational establishment.
When people die because you lied, and it was reasonably expected that the result of your lieing is that people would die, as is the case when you sell a war across The People's airwaves, that is called MURDER and TREASON, which carry the ultimate punishment.
What about the 80 billion dollars being spent on the new nation wide security spy network.Non bid private contracts.
If these companys want to stay in business, they need suspects.
Warrentless phone and email survielence is the tip of the ice burg. DHS, NSA, FBI are using Citizen Corps and Nieghborhood watch groups to conduct 24/7 survielence on innocent Amerians all over this nation. They use Red squad and Cointelpro tactics to slander a suspect and create fear in a community to swell their ranks of nation wide spys. They use Directed Energy Weapons to torture thier victoms, cause them to go crazy so they can justify to thier new recrutes the importance of thier survielence. This is East German Stazi gangstalking tactics used on people who speak up against the war, or the military complex, or certian politicians.
They are heavily funded by right wing extreme fringe groups or welthy corporations. These are private armys.
The reason reporters have not exposed this evil nation wide network is beacuse they are afraid of becoming targets. These vicious groups work until they have destroyed there targets.Years if needed.
But , if we don't do something soon , they are the driving force which will grow like a cancer and destroy the Constitution and this Country.
They operate above the law, and get way with it every day.
Thank you King Dick Bush and the USA Patriot Act.
Imagine a society of unemployed American workers getting the only jobs available in a ruined ecomomy, warrentles survielence of Americans.Easy money. Just sit in your car and follow people around until you break them.
And who are the leaders in each community that choose the suspects, where are the checks and balances to keep them honest, and stop abuse. No where.
stazi regime is not too far off, impeach busch / cheney,
stop warrentless survielence on all levels,
NO IMMUNITY
"He (Tillman) brought the Koran with him to Iraq when he was deployed there"
His big mistake was expressing his opposition to the Iraq war - quote: "it's a f-----k illegal war" and then making contact with Noam Chomsky, the "notorious" anti-war MIT professor.
I'm sure that did not go down well with Rummy, a man with so much blood on his hands that one more didn't phase him at all.
Must watch McCain video:

What happens if more Americans begin to realize all the lies..and that the news media is untrustworthy?
I can barely watch those vacant emotionally empty news presenters on tv...They seem like Stepford Wives...mechanical people with perfect hair and empty smiles...
Definitely the media is complicit in this mass murderous crime called the Iraq war. Americans (some of them good Americans) have been killed in war for the media's complicity as propagandists to the bushites. In my mind as I believe the facts prove this out, they're all prosecutable for treason.
Pat Tillman was shot by his own company while deployed to Afghanistan. He brought the Koran with him to Iraq when he was deployed there, thinking he would have an opportunity to share sentiment with Iraqis. He turned down a multimillion dollar NFL contract to join the army after 9/11. He was shot at by his company who at first missed. He popped a purple smoke grenade to mark his position. No Afghani militant is carrying purple smoke grenades. He was then shot while waving his arms screaming "It's me, Pat Tillman."
"rat to jump ship"?
He's still onboard. Much overlooked is that he claims in his book that the real reason Bush invaded Iraq was to "bring democracy to the middle east."
Which, as the wsws.org says, is the most ludicrous pretext attemptedly sold.
I didn't read it, but I have a feeling he does more than make the claim, but probably advances it with a chapter or two of propaganda.
Thanks for at least mentioning Anthony Russo's part in the Pentagon Papers exposure.
As few know, he did much more than assist Ellsberg. Does he still have a website? I lost the URL and Google does not turn it up.
The REAL story here should be that no one in the administration or in the media is calling McClellan a liar. The perpetrators and the enablers like to gloss over these revelations as "old news". The crime here is that they did their darnedest to make sure none of these stories saw the light of day when they were "new news" and destroy the credibility of anyone who had the audacity to tell them. Hooray for McClellan! Better late than never.
It's like in "All The President's Men". The truth has been leaking out, piecemeal, over the last five years. We just needed corroboration. Now we have it!
Colleen and others,
Some departed members of the media HAVE tried to tell their side. (caveat here - I'm very ambivalent about Dan Rather)
Leslie Griffith was a highly respected news journalist who refused to turn pro-war news reader. Here's her side:

From the article:
"what's needed here are not more confessions by political insiders but an actual trial of the perpetrators"
********
Well, McLellan's book certainly advances that objective, so we can't really knock it. And maybe it will generate the level of public (and international)rage that will force a squaring of events, even after Bush and Cheney are out of office.
And just wait 'til the real story of Pat Tillman's death comes out, and if it turns out (as some suspect it will) that he was the victim of an assassination hit team ordered by the Pentagon to prevent him from becoming an embarrassment as an anti-war activist.
There is plenty of evidence of the motive to assassinate him. He had become an outspoken anti-war soldier. And his wounds strongly suggest a murder - not an accident. Add to that the government lying and obfuscatiion from Day 1. Check out the info available on the Web.
I like that idea of trying people in the media for inciting and covering up war crimes...but it is tricky to do..because the press needs to be free to make mistakes.
I'd like to see some sort of method for making sure all points of view are heard. The left has been shut out.
But maybe this won't matter..news is now being read on the internet and viewers have access to international news now. And with You tube you can see the actual events without a filter by a manipulated media.
It would be interesting to see if someone from the media exposed what happened the way that Mc Clellan has exposed inside the White House..Imagine if Russert confessed to being manipulated by his bosses : )
I thank McClellan. He could have remained silent...
McClellan did the right thing when he wrote his book. He told the truth.
The Rwanda war crimes trial already created a precedent that media who incite violence are subject to prosecution for war crimes:
http://www.mediachannel.org/views/dissector/affalert202.shtml
"Yes, but, at least, he had the courage, these many years later, to confirm what I and other have been saying for years."
That's a good one! Courage? I think he sees the writing on the wall concerning war crimes trials down the road. He just wants to jump from a sinking ship like any other f*cking rat!
Its not 'media crimes enable war crimes'. Its 'media crimes ARE war crimes'.
There's a precedent for this. Some of the defendants at Nuremberg were media types who'd willing aided Nazi propaganda.

5280 has it right. The correct response is simply to turn them off. If you can't trust a news-source not to lie to you, its worthless. So, turn it off. Use the parental control features on your TV to block all the corporate 24-hour news channels. Then let them see their ratings numbers fall (or continue to fall is more like it). You might also want to contact them to let them know exactly why your turned them off. Don't beg them to change. Just tell them you've turned them off because you don't trust them.
The advertisers pulled the strings - they were much more than enablers !
It's not called The Mighty Wurlitzer for nothin', folks.
Maybe if a few dozen like Blitzer, Couric, Brokaw, Matthews and their crooked lying editors started falling out of windows like a lot of other people do, we'd start to hear some truth.
(see Bill Clinton for details)
"Rove compared him (Scott) to a left wing blogger" ?
There is a huge difference between left wing bloggers and Scott McClellan...left wing bloggers addressed these issues in detail from late 2002 through 2003. McClellan is just now addressing them.
While our media will never serve a day for aiding and abetting these criminals we call our government, we can do one important thing when it comes to over-the-air, cable and national print media: when at all possible -- refuse to buy from their sponsors that make it profitable. You can easily start with all national media outlets then carry it through to your "local" media. You want to weaken them?, then hit them in the pocketbook.
Its the only way because obviously they know no shame.
Don't buy from their enablers: the advertisers.
Remember that the "news" media have no legal obligation to tell the truth according to recent court rulings.
No responsible journalist would stoop to attending a "press conference" unless the actual leaders are present. Asking questions of a "press secretary" is absurd.
In England they MP's ask questions directly of the PM. That is how it should be, assuming any of it means anything.
Scott McClellan was a rotund moron. Why ask him anything? How about asking questions of real thinkers? Americans are so touchingly gullible and innocent. And stupid.
The over 1,000 mercenary dead, the murder-for-hire and their assistants, shouldn't be forgotten in accounting US fatalities; they underscore the point that the war has been a cash cow for those who engineered it & for their allies.
Scotty can swim and squeal at the same time...what's not to like?
