The Fun and Excitement of Civilization Wars (Fought from Afar)
In response to my post on Friday pointing out that nobody outside of the handful of Muslim-obsessed faux-warriors is moved any longer by the Government's endless exploitation of Terrorism to secure more and more unchecked power, National Review's Mark Steyn said:
He may have a point: It's psychologically exhausting being on permanent Orange Alert, especially as the reason for it recedes further and further in the rear-view mirror. A lot of Americans are "over" 9/11, and, while the event had a lingering emotional power, the strategic challenge it exposed has not been accepted by much of the electorate.
The truth is exactly the opposite. There is nothing more psychologically invigorating than the belief that you are staring down the Greatest and Most Evil Enemy Ever in History, courageously waging glorious war for all that is Good and Just in the world. Nothing produces more pulsating feelings of excitement and nobility like convincing yourself that you are a Warrior defending Western Civilization from the greatest threat it has ever faced, following in -- even surpassing -- the mighty footsteps of the Greatest Generation and the Warrior-Crusaders who came before them. For those who crave and glorify (though in their lives completely lack) acts of warrior courage, play-acting the role of the intrepid Warrior is uniquely satisfying. That's why nothing can fill the bottomless spare time of bored, aimless adolescents like sitting in front of a computer commanding vast armies and destructive military weapons, deployed against cunning, scary and evil enemies. That's why the Mark Steyns of every generation create such Enemies, becasue they are purposeless and aimless without them.
Steyn deeply flatters himself into believing that only he and his tragically small (and shrinking) band of warrior-comrades can bear the "psychologically exhausting" burden of defending The West and its freedoms. Sadly, most Americans -- he says -- are too weak, too brittle, just not up to the task of bearing the heavy burden of prosecuting the war against the omnipotent jihadi super-villains.
But not Steyn and friends. They are society's freedom fighters, the Progeny of Churchill, Patten and Napoleon, bravely and tenaciously manning the barricades of Civilization itself. They'll find a powerful and protective Warrior who leads them; advocate all sorts of fascinating technologies and complex spying schemes to wage the War; spend hour upon hour chatting about battles and tactics and strategies; and endlessly depict themselves as besieged though tenacious. Far from being "psychologically exhausting," convincing yourself that you are all that -- as Steyn and comrades explicitly do -- is to bathe oneself in self-affirming and self-glorifying virtue. Nothing could ever compete with such glory when it comes to psychological fulfillment.
Adam Smith, all the way back in 1776, in An Inquiry into the Nature And Causes of the Wealth of Nations, described the fun, entertainment and deep psychological fulfillment which Wars against Supremely Evil Enemies provide to many who don't have to fight them:
In great empires the people who live in the capital, and in the provinces remote from the scene of action, feel, many of them, scarce any inconveniency from the war; but enjoy, at their ease, the amusement of reading in the newspapers the exploits of their own fleets and armies . . . . They are commonly dissatisfied with the return of peace, which puts an end to their amusement, and to a thousand visionary hopes of conquest and national glory from a longer continuance of the war.
One finds vivid illustrations of the twisted syndrome Smith identified in most of Steyn's war cheerleading comrades, especially its leaders. From Jeffrey Goldberg's New Yorker profile of Joe Lieberman:
Lieberman likes expressions of American power. A few years ago, I was in a movie theatre in Washington when I noticed Lieberman and his wife, Hadassah, a few seats down. The film was "Behind Enemy Lines," in which Owen Wilson plays a U.S. pilot shot down in Bosnia. Whenever the American military scored an onscreen hit, Lieberman pumped his fist and said, "Yeah!" and "All right!"
Far from being "psychologically exhausting," the Wars against the Most-Evil-Enemies-Ever that take place inside the head of the Mark Steyns and Joe Liebermans are exhilarating and fun, and they provide the weak, purposeless and powerless with their only opportunity to feel strong, purposeful and powerful. Here, for instance, was the response from Steyn's warrior-comrade, Andy McCarthy to my post on Friday and his response to what Steyn wrote:
Glenn Greenwald? Yawn. Wake me up when he's interviewed some of the people trying to kill us and spent a few weeks with people maimed in terrorist attacks (I'd have spoken with the dead, but they were unavailable).
Look at how personally vital -- how indispensable -- the War of Civilizations is to McCarthy, to his identity and sense of purpose. He doesn't even need to go anywhere near combat, or fight in the Wars he cheers on. He still gets to be on the front line -- a gruff, hard-nosed, no-nonsense veteran-warrior who has been in the trenches, who has stared down the ugly realities of the Civilization Wars and -- despite it all -- still soldiers on. Think of the emptiness and loss of purpose if the Threat from the Enemy were exaggerated and all of that faded away. This is why our nation's faux-warriors can never be reasoned with. It's why their greatest fear is having the Threats from Our Enemies be put into rational perspective, alongside all the other garden-variety manageable threats we face. To argue that they are exaggerating and melodramatizing the Enemy and the threat is to take away from them that which is most personally important to them.
Just consider the grandiose, baroque rhetoric they employ. What they are defending -- today's U.S. -- is not merely good. It's not even great. It's not even the greatest thing there is on the Earth right now. No -- it's much more grand than that: it's the Greatest Country ever to exist on the Earth in all of human history. That's what they're defending; that's the magnitude of the burden they bear, the incomparable importance of the crusade they lead.
Conversely, the Enemy they are facing down (from a safe distance) is not merely threatening or evil or scary or formidable. No, it's much, much more than that. This is the greatest Enemy that exists on the planet, the most cunning and nefarious and evil force the world has ever seen -- not just now, but for all of human history. There is nothing remotely like the depravity and power of this particular Enemy -- and there never has been. Ever. Everything these faux-warriors face and defend is superlative; there has never, ever been a war like the one they are waging. None of the old rules apply. This is all unique, unknown, the first and most important of its kind.
What's most confounding about all of this is that they completely evade the most basic instruments of self-evaluation. All they have to do is look back and realize that every generation, in every country, is plagued by factions suffering from the same self-glorifying delusions -- that they alone are the Brave Warriors willing to engage in the Most Important Battle for Civilization Ever. None of it's new. Back in 1964, Richard Hofstadter described exactly this psychological affliction in his famous Harper's essay, The Paranoid Style in American Politics:
The paranoid spokesman sees the fate of conspiracy in apocalyptic terms -- he traffics in the birth and death of whole worlds, whole political orders, whole systems of human values. He is always manning the barricades of civilization. He constantly lives at a turning point.
Shouldn't basic self-awareness compel the faux-warriors who read that to at least entertain the thought: "Maybe my belief that I'm waging an apocalyptic War of Civilization against The Uniquely Evil Enemy is grounded in a psychological need, one that is extremely common if I look to the past, rather than an objective assessment or any sort of political belief or ideological conviction. Maybe I'm exaggerating the threat posed in order to inflate my own importance and give myself a sense of purpose and power as I convince myself that I'm waging all-important (though risk-free) war." Over the past couple decades, prior to the Bush Era, the people who needed the sort of psychological fulfillment that comes from prancing around as Hofstadterian faux-warriors waging Civilization Wars obtained their fulfillment from playing board and video games or, at worst, dressing up on the weekend in camouflage costumes and -- rather than playing golf or going fishing -- marched around in militia formations, primed to defend the nation from Janet Reno and her squadrons of hovering U.N. black helicopters. It was equally pathetic, but at least the damage was minimal.
But the 9/11 attacks and ensuing events catapulted their paranoia and powerlessness syndromes from clownish sideshow to dominant political faction. And their fevered, self-serving fantasies have empowered the Federal Government beyond anyone's wildest dreams, created a completely out-of-control domestic surveillance state, subordinated even the rule of law to the lawless dictates of Security State officials, and dismantled long-standing constitutional protections and political values so basic that they were previously beyond debate.
All of that is bad enough. But listening to the authors of these events martyr themselves by claiming that their crusades are "psychologically exhausting" is really too much to bear. The reason they pursue those crusades endlessly, and will continue to pursue them until stopped, is precisely because the only thing they find "psychologically exhausting" is the prospect of having to live without their Supreme War of Civilization, whereby they defend the greatest things ever, under siege from the most Evil villains ever, with them -- and only them -- courageous and tough enough to "do what needs to be done" to triumph.
Glenn Greenwald was previously a constitutional law and civil rights litigator in New York. He is the author of the New York Times Bestselling book "How Would a Patriot Act?," a critique of the Bush administration's use of executive power, released in May 2006. His second book, "A Tragic Legacy", examines the Bush legacy.

Show AllExcellent! Mr. Greenwald depicts, with some fine articulation, the very essence of the sickness from which those still supporting the neo-con agenda suffer - this grand struggle, like unprecedented in history.
My fatigue comes from the effort to comprehend how anyone, no matter how 'conservative' they may be in their economic or political views, cannot see through this smokescreen of deception, and, quite frankly, a betrayal of our true sense of patriotic decency. I am tired of hearing this revolting rhetoric spewed out at every conceivable opportunity, as the 'Great War' plows on, laying waste to so much, while there are numerous priorities going unmet in this country.
In this election year, please think priorities, and press them upon those running for office. Then hold them accountable for the promises they'll make just to get your vote.
Not my cup of tea, but imagine how different it would have been, if only the Wingnut Warmonger Cheering Section had taken up paintball combat instead of encouraging the real thing-- all for the sake of getting their tiny rocks off.
I believe that it was imbecilic wingnut infotainwhore Hugh Hewitt who once wrote that he was, or considered himself, to be on the Front Line of the Global War on Terror by virtue of the fact that he occupied an office high in the Empire State Building.
Presumably, we were to admire his tenacious courage and patriotic selflessness as day after day, he sat in that office and cranked out paeans to the criminal maladministration's heinous wars of aggression and imperialist occupations in the Middle East. This despite the fact that he worked in a tall building into which a terrorist evildoer could fly in a single bound! It's a life in the crosshairs that's alien to the complacent or deluded masses, but which endows the keyboard kommandos with a deep solidarity with front-line troops risking life and limbs to preserve the much-abused and under-appreciated freedoms of Amerikan citizens.
Theirs is a tragic, lonely, and noble destiny, alas! And they don't mind constantly blowing off their big bazoos to themselves and each other to remind us of their sacrifice and heroism.
thanks glenn. i now get it. when seen thru the eyes of paranoid, narcissistic sociopaths, our current foreign policy makes complete sense.
"Now showing at your local cinema, the gut-wrenching story of war fought by the noble GW Bush and his tough as nails side-kick, "Big Dick" Cheney.
The war movie to end all war movies as these two Valhalla bound heroes save the enter world against swarms of dusky skinned savages, ready at a moment's notice to cut up our Bill of Rights.
Be sure to see "FULL DINNER JACKET" soon to appreciate the effortless posings of these two Congressional of Medal Honor winners.
It took the German people from 1914 to 1945 to get their heads turned around and recognize the MIC-Nazi mantra as a lie : "The world ( including Jews ) is out to get us; They hate us for what we have ;We have to invade ( or bomb ) in order to avoid the same "
It may take American citizens that long or longer to recognize the same lies .
Of course Kaisar Wilhelm and Josef Goebbels didn't have the diversionary Superbowl or Paris Hilton as allies so it may take longer . Even starvation and massive devaluation of the deutch-mark in the early nineteen-twenties was insufficient to induce a healthy dose of sobering national humility.
The very sick "masters of war" are not only getting their rocks off but are making a tidy profit through investments in the military industrial complex, at the taxpayer's expense of course.
Meanwhile the "war on terror" is bankrupting the nation and fueling inflation while wealth is transferred from the many to the few via war and other corruption.
The twisted mental gymnastics of turning war crimes and sadistic brutality into a source of pride is a very old imperial mind game.
Randal Robinson states in: "Quitting America"
"Murder and plunder would be known for centuries to schoolchildren as heroic exploration. Slavery and colonialism would costume in their time as "civilizing missions" and Columbus' great, great, great grand offense, transnational corporate avarice, would find modern expression adorned in an array of diverting garments, "industrialization for a season, "development" for another, "free trade" and it alias "globalization" for still another."
If there is no inherent "Clash of Civilizations" why is the Organization of the Islamic Conference on the rampage again over a repeat of the Danish Muhammad cartoons, which were in turn a response to the alleged discovery of a bomb plot in revenge for the original 2005 run? Of course, Muslim demands are quite reasonable; they ask only that the government suppress publications that illustrate Muhammad (especially in a negative way) or otherwise offend their sensibilities. Isn't that what we, as liberals or leftists want of our government? To be free from hurt feelings?
Time to overthrow this Bush/McCain/Neocon phoney 'war of civilizations' that the Israel Lobby has us fighting -I've been reading up on Samantha Power and I know this chick must be on Obama's short list for Secretary of State. With Obama as president and Samantha as Sec State the prime war in the middle east - the slow genocide of the Palestinians by Israel - will be stopped.
Samantha's smart, sane, and aware of Walt/Mearsheimers seminal work on the Israel Lobby at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Time for Obama in the Middle Peace with the sanity of people like Samantha instead of Bush/McCain's coming war with Iran and continuing our 'Wars for Israel'.

Dennis Ross, on the other hand, is a NEOCON and Obama needs to ditch Dennis IMMEDIATELY. Dennis is the DIRECTOR of the Israel Lobby's WINEP Washington Institute for Near East Policy - this is Grand Central Station for Neocons in the US. This guy is utterly unfit to be in Obama's campaign - Obama might as well have Paul Wolfowitz, Perle, Doug Feith, Eliot Abrams, or Scooter Libby on his staff - these guys (including Martin Indyk) are Dennis's FRIENDS http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/templateI01.php
Obama must dump Dennis Ross from any foreign policy post considerations in his adminsitration - Dennis is a neocon - a Scooter Libby defender and fully credentialed AIPAC operative, for god's sake. Does anyone want a 'Warmonger Joe Lieberman' in his cabinet? Hell No! DITCH DENNIS - he's DANGEROUS!
I got a crush on Samantha!
I sent hundreds of e-mails to Senator Lieberman and that other Israel Republican, Senator Clinton, to stop supporting the criminal atrocities being inflicted on the Palestinians. My last missive to this pair was on the evening of September 10th, 2001. AIPAC got the wars they wanted but like the Sourcer's Apprentice they know not how to end it.
Please...that war between civilizations.
First, most of those who view the world this way know very little of Western Civilization's great music, literature, poetry, cinema, visual arts, its history and which other civilizations influenced "it".
And they never analyze ("anal"eyes) the economic system that might actually be destroying widespread appreciation of, and the continued support and creation of non-commercial folk arts and the cognitively complex and emotionally more profound serious arts that make Western Civilization worth while.
Of course, they know very little of the history and cultural acheivements of the those civilizations their Masters declare threatening to Western Civilization...the same Masters whom increasingly destroy the foundations and best expressions of Western Civilization
We can expect more wars, turmoil, impacts from natural disasters, plagues, famines, injustice, torture, atrocities, etc. in a world where overpopulation is not addressed.
Overpopulation of elephants, deer, crown of thorns starfish, sea urchins or other animals causes damage to ecosystems. If not controlled naturally, they must be controlled by culling and other human interference.
Some think that humans are exempted from natural controls because money rules, not nature. And that people rule nature.
We can ignore overpopulation and extreme resource/power concentration, but nature never does. It lets animals starve, die by disease, lets the hyena kill the baby antelope and the invading male lion kill the baby lions. Mostly all cruel and nasty.
The other day on NPR, Diane Rheam was interviewing three people concerning the coming extinction of bluefin tuna and tuna's high mercury contamination. The man representing commercial fishing said that health and environment should be separate issues and Diane agreed without questioning why.
One can say that health and environment are separate issues if one assumes humankind is not part of the natural environment and is somehow exempt from the health consequences of human environmental destruction.
Too many articles focus on the micro and not enough on the macro. I would like to see some CD articles focus on the overpopulation and extreme wealth/power concentration, the two issues that underlie all others.
Labeling a grubby colonial to claim oil fields as "a clash of civilizations" or a "war on terror" is necessary in order to get enough of the populace to go along and let their sons and daughters in the military fight to make corporate entities like Haliburton rich. Even in red state America, there are very few people who are willing to shed a drop of blood in order to enrich Exxon and their ilk. Thus the PR snow job is enacted.
The same fringe band of nuts uses the same rhetoric on nearly every issue, too, whether they are "saving American civilization" by stopping illegal immigrants and deporting as many as possible or saving civilization via the preservation of the institute of marriage from the Gays Who Hate Civilization so much they plan to marry-up until it's destroyed.
According to the Pentagon, the biggest Enemy of Civilization is... US!!! That's right - our Military considers catastrophic global climate mutations the Number One threat to Life On Earth! Too bad our Warriors of Protection aren't marshaling forces to defeat Mother Nature!
IOW, our most dangerous enemy on Earth... is ourselves.
Excellent appraisal. One of my favorite writers. We satisfy our need to feel important and end up sacrifing our own children.
With free speech comes a responsibility not to promote hate speech. If the cartoons depicted Africans, Jews, Latinos or any other minority group in such a hateful manner there would be an uproar. However, Muslims always get the double-standard. Lets apply the same standards to everyone as human beings and lets not participate in the hate or this clash of civilization nonsense promoted by various elites. We are all part of one civilization, the human one.
Very good article.
However, I think the author is wrong when he says that it's all about the deep-rooted psychological issues the ones who are pushing the "terrorists will kill us all in our sleep" phobias at us have. I think the real reason why they're doing this is simply for their own financial benefit. It's not really a psychological thing for them, although they're certainly doing their best to take advantage of whatever psychological issues Americans have, collectively (and we're all people, so we all have issues). It's a financial gains thing, actually. It's cold-blooded and it's purely evil.
ticonderoga - I agree the reason the author states might hold for all the auxillary players, like the Fox News loonies. But I too don't think that's the reason behind the main players - Bush, Cheney level neocons. And I don't think financial gain is it either. Look, they already have all the financial resources and power they need. I could be wrong, but I think money and power are just means in the quest for Christian world domination. Sounds trite and goofy to progressives, and even to run of the mill Christians, but these guys aren't run of the mill. Read 'American Fascists' for details.
This is a most powerful and enlightening article. It is enlightening because it is an entirely new perspective to me. It far broadens my understanding of why this insidious Neocon theology has been so successful.
In a diabolical way, this Neocon ideology has also been successful because it has catered to a sense of loss of true spiritual purpose in our materialistic, militant, nationalistic and Christian- right or wrong culture. It is about the delusions of American destiny, driven by an intoxicating and intrinsically evil capitalistic culture.
Regarding the "clash of civilizations", to me it is a clash between the materialism of the corporate capitalistic West versus the rise of spirituality, one example being a deep hunger for justice for all of humankind.
I'm "over 9/11", for-sure.
SO over-it (wish more were!].
Hell, everyone having ANYTHING to do with it is 'over-it', and has-been since the 12th-or-so...
Are YOU over-it?
The 'Day that Changed Everything', I hear -- but the literate know it changed "nothing at all"... [click my Name]
Wordy shit ......... so it goes.
Speaking of 9/11:
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn02162008.html
THEY ain't 'over-it', they all Capitalized on it...
Kane, I agree with you --- to a point. I think it's partly for financial gain and partly for world domination and power (with world domination and power comes, of course, financial gain). I agree that there's a Christian element at play here, but I suspect that the people involved in this "game" aren't actually Christians at all, but are, instead, secular men who are manipulating Christians to help them gain world domination and power (and money). They have taken Christianity, which is something its followers love dearly, and have subverted it into a tool to get what they want. For them Christianity is simply a business, a business that uses extreme violence and prejudice as part of it's money-making tactics.
In the long run, though, I don't suppose it matters much whether the people doing the manipulating are really Christians or not. What matters is what they're doing, which is purely evil.
To make an oddball analogy, which I admit is something I tend to do a lot, Afghan hounds are considered by most dog trainers to be very difficult to train. Afghan hound owners and breeders defend their breed by saying that the reason why they're difficult to train isn't because they're stupid, but is because they're too independent to train easily. But does it really matter whether they're stupid or independent if you can't train them?
There is a perception amongst Americans, that people of the world are not like them, and are a danger to them. They believe the difference in systems of values is too great to accomodate and that American values, being superior, must be imposed for our protection. The leaders have the same perception and act on it. Cheney knows his time on earth is limited and is going for broke in a cause he feels is just. The end justifies the means. They do not see themselves as evil and neither do I. I just believe they are American, and thus alienated and incapable of having a realistic perception. We reject the world regularly and don't feel part of it. We see no choice but to fight because nobody comes up to our standards. Nobody. The only hope for America is to integrate into the world community, something that will happen after the US gains a critical mass of poor people.
Okay, lizard, maybe Cheney doesn't see himself as evil, but it seems to me that killing 800,000 or so people because they're unfortunate enough to have vast amounts of oil underneath the ground in the country they live in is on the evil side.
But, yeah, once there's enough poor people in America, things will change. Which is why Cheney and his buddies, if they're smart as well as evil, will do whatever they can to make sure we don't get QUITE poor enough to rock the boat.
ticonderoga - So would you say that Catholic Priests are just secular men who are using the cover of their religion (and position in the church) to satisfy their perversions? At what point do we stop letting religion off the hook? If it can't stop lifelong adherents from commiting crimes, from committing mass killings, from resisting being led like sheep to support crimes of others...at what point do we say enough is enough, and place the blame where it should be placed? And similarly, if evildoers like Bush and the neocons act in every way religious, then why NOT just call them what they are...Christians. (And I feel fairly certain Jesus himself would agree with me on this one. He'd be ashamed at the religion created supposedly in his honor).
I watched the 2nd plane hit live and the 2 towers collapsing, from 10,000 miles away and 12 time zones. I had no doubt it was OBL at the time and in my rage felt we should nuke Afghanistan immediately to send the proper message.
It was not until we went into Iraq and I read Richard Clarkes book that I started to doubt the official version, and the foot dragging over the 9/11 commission led to me start looking into it a bit more.
But when the official 9/11 report came out in 2004 and after reading some of David Ray Griffins stuff, I had no doubt a cover up of massive proportions had been executed. As an engineer, I knew that the 3 towers had to have been exploded to collapse as they did, and while unsure how that was accomplished, I believed that terrorists could have arranged it as a backup or supplementary plan, and fully expected this to have been investigated, and it was not.
The other major issue to me was no air defense over Washington DC, and this was not adequately addressed in the report either. When you are unsure where and when the enemy will strike, and have insufficient resources to go hunting every possible threat, you stay home and protect your most valuable assets, and Washington DC was certainly that. Our military and government may be many things, but one thing they are not is incompetent or stupid (although they like you to believe it so you will accept the incompetent, accident, coincidence theories).
Now I believe I know with a reasonable certainty what happened. Most people still deny what should be obvious if they had an open mind and are able to think, and for good reason I suppose, since once the line is crossed , there is no going back, and they are safe in their ignorance.
For those who do realize the truth, if you go back and look at the "real" history of the 20th century, you will realize that 9/11 is just a small part of a Grand Conspiracy of a small group of rich and powerful Anglo,American,Zionist elite.
New World Order and Globalization are terms used by those in this conspiracy, and they are the first to discredit any conspiracy theory as absurd. I mean, how can any group of people who control the money, media, government and education fool the people. The people are too smart for that, and they are too stupid. LOL. They actually publish their plans in books, some of which are disguised as fiction, knowing that people do not read much.
They (meaning the conspiracy elite and some elements at the higher levels in government)do not fear terrorists. They create terrorists. What they fear is 300 million people awakening. This is the purpose behind creating a "completely out-of-control domestic surveillance state, subordinated even the rule of law to the lawless dictates of Security State officials, and dismantled long-standing constitutional protections and political values so basic that they were previously beyond debate".
Wake up people. You are the enemy they fear. Not men hiding in caves 8000 miles away. Thats why they need a Homegrown Terrorism Act. Since your collective numbers terrify them, given the crimes they have committed against you, you are their terrorists.
For the last 30 years, they have reduced your standard of living, taken away your rights, exported your jobs overseas, denied you access to health care, imprisoned you over drugs they import and profit from, impoverished you with health care costs, Greenspan bubbles bursting here, there and everywhere, usury interest rates, fraudulent CPI which reduce COLAS, etc. And by the end of 2008 or 2009, they will give you a Depression that is man made.
They are also poisoning you with GM foods, aspartame, fluoride, anti-depressants, antibiotic and bacteria laden foods, and other medications. They attack you with events such as the OKC bombing, TWA 800, 9/11, and some of these mall/school shootings have all indications of being MK ULTRA type operation.
Can't blame them for being a wee bit nervous if even 1/2 of it is believed by 300 million people.
Good article Mr. Greewwald, but the guys you talk about are merely tools, in the popular vernacular sense.
ezflyer said what I would have, and how are you, by the way?
We are wrong to believe that the evil being perpetrated by our nation is solely an American phenomenon, a point repeatedly made in the article. This is the true meaning of "globalization." Nothing new here.
Several years ago I bought the book "A Theory Of Everything" by Ken Wilbur on the recommendation of my brother. The first few chapters smelled so new-agey that I almost threw it in the garbage can, but I persevered nonetheless. Though not the gist of it, what I took away from it is this: Yes, we are all the same or indistinguishably similar in the distribution of those among us who would dominate, those who would be happy living modestly, in those that would make peace, in those that would make war, etc., etc.
The greatest threat to humanity today is not the rise of religious fundamentalism (of any stripe) but the rise of the idea of Homo Econimus. The idea that economic reality is the ultimate expression of human development and all other aspects of our human existance are subservient to this. This is the Republican mantra as well as the globalizers mantra, but it is only the mantra of those "memes" that live to dominate.
I am aware that Michael Shermer has just published a book with the title "Homo Econimus" and I'm anxious to read it, though by the short review that I read he is not using the term in the same way that I may be. My use of the term "Homo Econimus" identifies a (not so) new philosophy that is the greatest threat to the existance of our race and our planet.
Cheney and his lot are evil. They know what they are doing, and why. Some are evil because they are DTS (Dumber Than Shit), but I think all of that is an act. Reagan played the DTS card early because he was involved in a number of crimes, starting with his deal with Iran to ensure the US hostages would not be released before Carter lost the election.
"We were like men in a dream, and The Lord filled our mouths with singing...." This is American imperial history from the beginning. So said Captain John Mason (the most comically inept would-be killer of Native Americans on colonial record, second only to "Captain Shrimp" Myles Standish)---as Mason and about 75 other Christian-Colonial fools set out to march across Connecticutt, "undetected" by thousands of interrelated Native peoples, in order to surprise and massacre the Pequot village at Mystic. They wanted that good country just as we today wanted Iraq's oil. And yet, "It's as if they know we are coming," reflected Mason's idiotic Bible-belching partner, John Underhill (another man who so enjoyed holy butchery that he named his later estate Killingworth)....So the Pequots and other tribes set up decoys, gave the English "guides" who took their mighty guests and made complete fools of the English bearers of civilization, and the clowns went back to the colonies to write about their non-existent great victory. Their writings we call the first generation of "how to conquer the wilderness and savages" instruction-manuals---and thanks to the ministers who built our schools with businessmen close by, we've followed their disastrous dick-headed models ever since. And did the truth ever come out? Here and there---and yet, of course, the colonists, so busy already with stuffing themselves, were no longer interested, except in a myth that made them God's holy anointed, blameless despite each mass murder and "windfall" of resources. The rest (including Custer and Calley) is history---a nightmare from which we are trying to awaken. People(s) who hate life as it really is, who live in their heads to "escape" from it, MUST eventually either give it up/get real, or FORCE THE WORLD to resemble their delusions---until it breaks them, of course, every time. How long will our turn take? How much more blood? .... http://ancientgreece-earlyamerica.com
"ticonderoga - So would you say that Catholic Priests are just secular men who are using the cover of their religion (and position in the church) to satisfy their perversions?"
For the most part, Kane, I would. That doesn't mean that the church isn't guilty of letting those men get away with what they've done to avert scandal, however. And the Catholic Church is guilty of other things that have little to do with what Cheney and Co. are doing, as well, such as its ridiculous prohibition against birth control.
So, yeah, the Christian Church, regardless of denomination, is by its very nature tailor-made to be used by secular men to further their own needs, and the leaders of its various denominations should, assuming they actually believe in the teachings of Christ, tell their members that war is not the answer. Some of them do, and some of them don't. It's my contention that the ones who don't aren't really Christians at all, but are simply unprincipled businessmen, out to make a killing (bad pun intended).
And, no, The Church shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. But neither should all churches be grouped with the ones who tolerate evil in the name of God. Some do good things.
And, just so you know, I don't believe in the god of the Bible.
War between civilizations? When I look around the world I see little that suggests a civilization let alone a war between them.
I see something closer to the uncivilized world run by the pigs in Animal Farm.

Jack 37, Randolfski, little brother,Grayling, et al have nailed it as well.
The empty, shallow, narcissistic sociopaths seem to find a life-purpose in some Platonic conception with emotionally powerful, if not seductive, manichean undertones embedded deep in their heads.
The rest of us have opted to live in an existential planet with human beings worth reaching out to. Unfortunately, the slick and greedy are aware of the seductive power of the tribal and territorial impulses hard-wired in our brains by evolution.
The S&G's will use whatever words, symbols or iconography at their disposal to stimulate these primitive impulses and con the unfulfilled, mediocre and unvalidated "True Believers" into recklessly joining some great crusade to liberate the universe from evil, once and for all. Shades of the GRAND NARRATIVES of _Lord of the Rings!_, "Star Wars" and the Holy Inquisition. In these "grand wars" for universal peace and freedom no holds are barred and all manner of cruelty and torture is allowed. After, all we represent virtue/good and "they" are evil incarnate.
You get the picture. _Our_ "ism" is better than _their_ "ism." And in victory (or death seeking it)personal mediocrity will vanish, personal fulfillment will be at hand and one will finally be validated as a human being. As if it were that easy!
Kind of has its Jungian narcissistic appeal doesn't it? To me these
"emotion-grabbing" narratives and our primal need for them have always explained the commercial success of the aforementioned films. The vicarious success is emotionally satisfying. The difference is that after 120 minutes in the dark, nobody dies. It's all stage action. And I gladly pay 10 bucks for the thrill. Then I walk away and it's over.
Not so the 800, 000 dead in Iraq, our thousands of mutilated vets, the thousands with PTSS and our half-trillion dollar national debt...
For the infamous chicken-hawks in this administration and their friends in the press, sending others to their deaths for the sake of "tribal" glory is way too easy. And entertaining, psychologically uplifting and satisyfing. Hip, hip, hooray! Adam Smith had their number back in 1776.
The pigs took over the farm.
Dear MiMicCs: I hope you read this....You mentioned no air defense over Washington DC. Now here is a scary scenario: If the fourth plane had not been brought down in Pennsylvania by a passenger revolt, it would have hit the Capitol. Suppose, just suppose, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, et. al. WANTED that to happen?
Not only would you have the perfect excuse of the WTC and the Pentagon strikes to go to war over, but the entire Congress or most of it would be dead. Who would stop you from declaring martial law, seizing power, and establishing rule by Presidential decree, since there IS no one else to make decisions? BushCo must have wet themselves with gleeful anticipation. When the plane went down in a field in PA, instead of wiping out the whole Congress, what a tragic disappointment that must have been.
And one more thing. Who has ever wondered why the third plane came in from the north, circled almost completely around the Pentagon to come in from the opposite side, and hit it on the west where most of the offices were vacant, and diametrically across from Rumsfeld's own office? Suppose, just suppose, someone who was organizing the whole thing fed the terrorists false information about the layout of the Pentagon, directing them to circle around and hit the least important part of the building?
(I live in Arlington. You have to understand that West of the Pentagon is the suburb of Roslyn, composed of a dense collection of high-rise buildings sitting up on a hill overlooking the Pentagon. If you wanted to hit the Pentagon with a plane on the west side, you could not fly in from the west - you would HAVE to come in from a different angle and circle around it. I believe the point of attack was deliberate, and predetermined - by someone.)
It's worth recalling how eager the entire American public was to invade Iraq. Even a tiny amount of research would have revealed that Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz were lying about a Saddam/911 connection. But at that moment, no one wanted to be bothered with facts.
It's also worth noting that the reaction of the Brits and Spaniards to the terrorist bombings in their respective countries was quite different from ours.
I would argue the defect isn't just in our leadership.
Cheney doesn't believe in killing-people for Oil -- that would 'bother his conscience', and he knows 'oil ain't Scarce'. He (like Kissinger, and all-other 'realists') believes in 'killing for Life's-sake' -- because he knows "G_D made too-many of these damn-humans". BUT, he won't ever kill any of 'his people' (unless he is drunk and hunting clipped-wing 'game' -- but that'll be more 'collateral-damage', and defensible under even Martial-Law), also known as 'Bush's Base' [but I know them as 'Bush's Masters', and YOU know them as Central Banks and 'Bilderberger's'].
"Want fries with your Bilderberger" -- sorry, talk to Gates&Buffet about their Arctic-Preserve -- Monsanto screwed-up all your-potatoes...!
Guess you'll have to 'eat' a Bilderberger all by Himself/Herself! [Start with Hillary, she was in Toronto, like her Rhodes-scholar husband was, once before...]
In contrast with all the character assaults that accompany articles (on this site) focused on our election "choices," this informed discussion is why I log onto this site. Thanks to intelligent, interesting comments from; J. CONRAD, TICONDEROGA, FRANK, NATE W., KANE JEEVES, SOCRATES 2, and JACK 37.
We are so fashioned by academia to look into universal matters through a specific prism. The angle that directs our view might be economics, or religion, or politics, or population numbers, etc. All events come about through a series of forces. The psychological allure of power through warfare is a very strong imprint not due to genetics as some have postulated, but due to conditioning. Although human-like beings existed many thousands of years into the past, recorded history goes back at best 3-4000 years. The Ancient Greeks and Romans believed whoever won a wore gained the support of the gods, and Mars in particular. In modern America, the favor of the gods is leveraged by investing in a diabolical military budget and enough arms to blow up our world MANY times over; but has this madness stopped? Instead, the military budget continues to grow in the face of evaporated funds for everything else.
I argue often that this asymmetric paradigm of purpose, as seen by and through WHAT we invest in, is corrupting this nation. Of course media must be used to pump up a sense of glory to get young people to fight wars that only benefit the industries directly seeing profit through war. MANY now see the truth, but how to be set free, when the apparatus of state, the checks and balances this nation was ingeniously founded upon, the premise of a vote, are both absolutely corrupted but with small, notable exceptions.
Even if small men who lack potency identify with war, weapons and the PR to deploy both, that does not address the Smedley Butler issue of the fruits of warfare and who they serve. I am glad that some have commented on the religious aspect of war and how the use of FAITH to move people beyond reason has fit so well into this M.A.D paradigm of destruction. When bad policy is inked in the delusion of god's name, many will not question it. Where I live, when I speak freely about what is going on in this nation, I have recently had someone say they wanted to 'report me' for speaking against the government. Can you imagine? These (and they are Christian red neck, right wing idiots because their authoritarian training does not allow them to see outside a paradigm that ultimately would support a czar, pharaoh, dictator, or other absolute ruler) thought-less types see government as an entity we MUST respect. They do NOT understand the premise of "government by, for and OF the people." They do not recognize the government is THEIR representative, rather than their master. They do not understand the 3-branch system intended to balance power has been corrupted. They are raised by religious families to believe they must respect authority.
Between this schism in the nation (awakened souls versus the authoritarians who bow to false creeds and "powerful" bosses) and the very real destabilization of weather (tornado outbreaks where I live as a growing constant), the concept of security is itself fast becoming a failed notion. It was published a few years ago that climate events would pose greater challenges to world security than any force of purported terrorism, and yet the US churns on to the tune of "more, bigger, faster, 'better'," and consumes far more than is necessary through greed, ignorance and carelessness.
The spiritually aware recognize their role in the fate of the earth, see their common chords of brotherhood/sisterhood with all other sentient beings, and seek to live more simply. Many of us try to awaken others to create a critical mass that would burst through this dense cloud of darkness that directs US foreign and domestic policy. It is absolutely tragic to note all the things being misused in the name of a variety of gods, real and newly invented, when the resources exist to turn off the time-bomb of weather implosion; and we've also been given by Martin Luther King and Desmond Tutu the means to Truth and reconciliation among tribes.
War creates profits, so those who profit from war will seek to own the means to socializing people to continue the ways to war. It's both media, and religion. It also includes economic paradigms and the frames that enculturate, hero worship, the oily muscle, machismo STRONG on that list. Who does war serve? The god of vengeance and those who identify with the transitory, profit over people, carnage over peace. This also explains why pot (peace pipe) is illegal, while alcohol and drugs are practically our national insignia(s). The crimes of this nation are enormous. The leadership barely human. The masses rendered dull from drugs, bad food and hypnotic faux entertainment, ever at the ready to use the glory of film media to make war look sexy and exciting, a great "career." Earth mother can't take much more of it all... GAIA can do much to reduce the little man's enormous ego. You can count on that.
Right on. It is highly disturbing to me that one of two things is the case: we have simpletons at the helm who really believe the "good guys vs. bad guys" uh, "explanation" of world events; or we have a crew of clever manipulators that deliberately appeal to the worst in the public mind - the jingoism, the xenophobia, the cultural ignorance - for its own purposes.
Whatever their hidden agendas and purposes really are, much has been concealed. These days it's hard to say what is not a matter of "national security" and "executive privilege" that must not be investigated - for the good, of course, of the American people – something from what I've seen, that's about as dear to this administration as its lofty ideal of "Iraqi Freedom" ever was.

Glenn Greenwald: Please, PLEase PLEASE!! write another article, along the same reasoning, only replacing "Enemies/Terrorists" with "corporitist/rightwingers etc", and "Warrior-Crusaders" with "progressives/CDposters".
I loved the article, agree tremendously, and would love to hear the analysis on someone like myself... who thinks the greatest enemy of all time is Fascism and we (the intellectuals/liberals) are the greatest people of all time. Of course- we live among more relevant threats, but it would be a much needed article.
"John Williams, a former Foreign Office aide, said last night that publication of his document would expose how members of Tony Blair's team were locked in a mindset that made military action inevitable."
I was stunned at the number of 'Americans' who had malfunctions in their Bull Shit Filters when this was going down until I realized that these were the self same churchgoing 'christians' who had been trained for generations to believe what they were told, to do what they were told and never to ask questions. AKA true believers all - following the Anti-Christ into Hadies.
So what, specifically, are we going to do about them? What will WE do to STOP THEM? "Elect" Dims who will continue our march of "impunity" for the monsters while waging war on innocents with OUR GWOT? Blog indefinitely until Erik Prince drives an M80 tank down your Main Street and the net is gone? Will you do NOTHING? When will WE organize the shut down of this government? Never? Just suck thumbs and write pretty words til we are living in smoking rubble. How many of your relatives will have to be "disappeared" before you will consider taking strong action?
WHAT FOOLS: right on! John Dean's book, "Conservatives without Conscience" does an astute job of locating the authoritarian mental "disease" for what it is; and it truly IS anathema to democracy. It sees the US as an intended christian theocracy. What fun for all! Dictatorship that their faux Jesus would love... but hell for the rest of us (and nothing Jesus would ACTUALLY endorse, being a hippie mystic and evolved soul, after all!)
Luckylefty...
Ignore the 'spirituals', the 'academics', and the 'rational-thinkers', and especially the Mogan-Davids in here...and listen to Me (most of them are 'plants' or 'idiots', anyway).
I can actually Answer your questions (but 'don't shoot the messenger').
YOU can actually 'do' very-little about these 'Plans' in a 'so-complex' World, because of the sheer-Inertia behind those Plans and the Interests that are 'behind' them-all, multi-'generationally', and acting (while 'reacting', constantly) to overall-Plans -- that were in-place and Devised and enabled WELL before you were even-born.
I can tell you the Family-name of the single biggest 'evil-influence' and Family behind all the Crap so many in here decry -- but you know it already, and THAT will do you NO good at-all (nor any-good for the worlds-poor, who are nearing the End of their 'run' -- but if you want a 'clue', watch "24" on Fox, and note the 'writer-humor' behind "Bauer"). The poor were tolerated when they were a 'fully controlled-Market', and will be henceforth -- but FAR less of them will 'exist' soon, because there are just too-damn-many and our Western Civilization was NEVER designed to be 'sustainable' (it's called "Malthusian-extinction" if 'Nature' was behind all this, but what it really-is can be called 'a culling of the Herd'). And No -- no matter how disgusted you may be (or 'get') you can't "stop this". [And, as a semi-Realist, I can make a fine-case and Argument about 'why' you should not want-to -- just like Darwin could&did]
It's all been 'unpleasant' for hundreds-of-years -- and its going to get a whole lot-uglier in the next decade-or-two, you-betcha.
Here's what you CAN 'do':
Learn to be a Realist, yourself -- and 'join in'. There really is a LOT of money/comfort/security to be made soon, IF you play your cards-right, don't 'oppose' them and you can profit with them (just not as-much), and they WILL leave you-and-yours alone (and let you 'thrive', even) if you are 'smart and ruthless' -- like Them.
And, 'there's your answer', like it or not (they AND I don't really 'care' which you pick. You can beat your head into the wall you've only recently 'recognized' was there, but IF you figure out a way to 'effectively' oppose OR expose them, you WILL surely be eliminated before you are much of a 'Problem'. Your family may be spared, if they are 'innocent', but they will 'miss you'.
Do this:
Always Obey the Law and current-Authorities...
If you don't/can't, at-least 'don't get caught'...
Trust in no one...
Be 'smart'...
Read a lot...
Work hard...
Plan for your family's Future...
Smile -- while being watched, or questioned...[innocent folks are happy, and don't 'flinch']
Find out what any new (even if 'silly') Laws are, then Obey them...
For the immediate-future, even in the US, don't trust "water, food, inoculations, courts, anyone" -- these are what will 'thin the Herd'.
Oh...and make as much 'money' (however that concept may change over Time) as you can, but Legally.
If all of that is simply too-'hard' or too-Distasteful, just try to see what 'they' are doing, and copy-them (just like cheating on an Exam...just don't 'pick' a dumbass to 'copy-from').
Pray (if Religious) that YOU ain't their new-target.
All kinda 'simple', really. And, you've heard this all before.
How long has this Crap been going-on? Click my Name...
Quo Vadis? Well, by 2030, there will be less than 2-billion keeping you company (if you/yours are still here). Neo-Libs and 'Democracy' will kill far-more than any Neo-Cons or 'Totalitarians' ever dreamed-of...and yet 'look real innocent' after doing-so (they are Good at That -- that's why Rhodes-scholarships and an Ivy-league Education is Coveted!). The 'West and Civilization _will_ Win'...hooray!
The rich will be ... richer, and you Know about the Poor, right?
The World will NOT 'end' anytime-soon (one can Hope, anyway).
Someday, we will leap off of this Planet (probably made possible by the Fusion-power waiting for us on the moon, in form of H3), and into 'Galaxies far-far-away'. Maybe then, when EVERY point-of-view imaginable can have their very-own planetary-system to screw-up royally (perhaps after slaying all-Natives -- or maybe enslaving them, firstly?) -- there MAY actually be Peace Among Men (but personally, I doubt it -- SOME asshole ALWAYS wants 'yet-more').
And...there you have it.
Did that 'hurt'?
And really-now, didn't you 'already-know' (except for all the Details, which I haven't time to explain just-now)?
"No Worries -- Be Happy!"
Siouxrose, I like your post, too. Especially the "Gaia" reference. Find that whole "interconnected world" idea to be a very interesting one.
Microcosm:
By far the most efficient land predator on earth is the African Wild Dog, which is successful 7 out of 10 times in the hunt. By comparison, African lions are successful only about 2 out of 10 times. This raises a question: Why, if African Wild Dogs are such efficient hunters, don't they overrun their prey species and run out of food, and eventually hunt themselves into extinction? Why are they relatively rare, if they're such efficient hunters?
The answer to this is that they're very susceptible to distemper, which sometimes wipes out entire packs.
So nature --- Gaia, if you will --- has devised a way to keep African Wild Dogs in check.
But what keeps us in check? We are so much more effective, not as predators but as killers, than African Wild Dogs that the comparison is ridiculous.
We are our own distemper, what with our incessant warring on each other and our destruction of the global environment. Global warming and our addiction to oil will keep us in check, just as distemper keeps African Wild Dogs in check. The difference between us and African Wild Dogs is that we are intelligent enough to know this and can keep ourselves in check, instead of letting "distemper" do it for us, if we can override our greed. But if we don't, Gaia will do it for us.
Maybe some people will think this sounds kind of New Age-y (it's not, really, but is instead simply biology), but I suspect that the powers-that-be know this to be true, at the bottom of their cold black hearts, and will start doing something about it someday. Hopefully it won't be too late.

Utopian ideals like
"might makes right!"
are for losers with

Evil can be overcome by good example.
There is no other way.
To resist evil is to prepare for defeat
on the *home field* of the evil one.
The only way to win is to create a new model
whose attractiveness allows ALL to win,
and thus makes the temptation to do wrong unappealing.
(People do what is appealing. If there are no
positive alternatives, we will have evil by default.)
The heritage of any sustainable, peaceful society
will be the weakening and literal disintegration of evil
by the brilliance of good deeds
whose reality shames the bad,
as light eliminates the dark.
The bad will want to become good, or be very lonely otherwise.
Boo hoo.
Not even the so-called cabal
that may or may not "run the world,"
can stop the power of love; nor the
massive armies whose cohesion depends upon an illusion.
They are harmless when you yourself are completely harmless.
But this love must be practiced, widely, universally, and pervasively.
Were we to heed the advice of the wisest in our history,
of the saints and prophets,
of Jesus and Buddha,
and of all of the messengers of love,
we would not be in trouble now.
The questions before us would be quite different.
They would be,
How can we be even happier, more harmonious,
and improve our lives even more?
And you leftists who cringe at the words "love" or at the mention of Jesus or Buddha, might want to actually ponder the concept of love,
and read the texts for the first time, perhaps, in your life.
And to you rightists who so publicly talk of love, and broadcast your religious affiliations in public, you might want to ponder the concept of love,
and read the texts for the first time, perhaps, in your life.
This path of unconditional sharing, of love, of meeting the need around us,
is ever available to us, as long as we live and move and have our being.
That is the secret of transformation, of the fact of now, of the opportunity in the now.
If what I write seems naive and airy, and unrealistic, then for you, it is. So be it. As colorful people say, I could give a rat's ass. And I apologize for being out of character. Pardon me while I laugh.
Like a hologram, the truth may be deduced from the short passage; the part always reflects the whole from which it came, or of which it is. See in there, then.
Siouxrose nailed it. As more and more of humanity awaken into higher consciousness the psychological gamesmanship Mr. Greenwald so accurately describes become ever more transparent and less effective. It is one of the more heartening things about modern life.
Siouxrose.........Your thoughts mirror my inner-most feelings.
It is an emerging higher global consciouseness that can only save us, the evolutionay destiny of humankind. This is what makes it exciting times.
As a progressive peace activist Catholic, I personally view this emerging higher global consciousness as the universal consciousness of the risen Christ. But by no means do I feel others need to view it that way.
I need to say this to offer CD readers some hope that there is a similar higher consciousness taking place in both Catholic and mainstream Protestism.
To me, this is where the Church needs to be in the 21st century, as a praxis, not a ruling force, humbly embacing all of humanity with non-parochial wisdom.
Please be assured, this viewpoint is banging inside the doors of most religious orders.
Thank you for your contributions to CommonDreams.
