Sunrise Movement Responds to Biden’s Potential Infrastructure Counteroffer: You are Making a Huge Mistake

WASHINGTON -

In response to news of President Biden’s potential counter-offer to an infrastructure proposal from U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Ellen Sciales, Press Secretary of Sunrise Movement released the following statement:

“If Democrats learned anything from the past ten years, it has to be that negotiating against ourselves doesn’t work. We saw it in the fight over the Affordable Care Act, we saw it during the fight over the Waxman-Markey climate bill, and we saw it when Republicans stole two Supreme Court seats when Democrats failed to fight for them. Let’s not mince words: this is a demonstrable failure of a political strategy. We can’t repeat the same mistake and expect a different result.

“President Biden knows this is a once in a generation opportunity to make real change, which is why he campaigned on a bold climate vision and began his administration with a historic Covid relief bill. He can’t follow that up by going small and selling out our multiracial, cross class movement of working people to compromise with politicians who would rather ensure billionaires get tax cuts than make sure we get paid a living wage.

“Not a single Republican Senator voted for the popular, much needed Covid relief package and Democrats passed it anyway. That’s the correct strategy – Democrats must take their power seriously and do what’s needed with or without the GOP. The more this package is watered down, the more people will die from extreme weather, families will break under the struggle of under and unemployment, voters who put everything on the line for Biden will lose hope in what the government can do for them, and Black and brown communities will be hurt the most.

“Our message to President Biden is simple: you are making a huge mistake. Voters in 2022 and 2024 will not ask whether you were nice to Joe Manchin and Susan Collins; they will look to whether or not you dealt with the climate crisis and created millions of new union jobs when you had the chance. Biden must answer that call.”
