Debt Political Theater Diverts Attention While Americans' Wealth Is Stolen
The rancorous debate over the debt belies a fundamental truth of our economy -- that it is run for the few at the expense of the many, that our entire government has been turned into a machine which takes the wealth of a mass of Americans and accelerates it into the hands of the few. Let me give you some examples.
Take war. War takes the money from the American people and puts it into the hands of arms manufacturers, war profiteers, and private armies. The war in Iraq, based on lies: $3 trillion will be the cost of that war. The war in Afghanistan; based on a misreading of history; half a trillion dollars in expenses already. The war against Libya will be $1 billion by September.
Fifty percent of our discretionary spending goes for the Pentagon. A massive transfer of wealth into the hands of a few while the American people lack sufficient jobs, health care, housing, retirement security.
Our energy policies take the wealth from the American people and put it into the hands of the oil companies. We could be looking at $150 a barrel for oil in the near future.
Our environmental policy takes the wealth of the people -- clean air, clean water -- and puts it in the hands of the polluters. It's a transfer of wealth, not only from the present but from future generations as our environment is ruined.
Insurance companies, what do they do? They take the wealth from the American people in terms of what they charge people for health insurance and they put it into the hands of the few.
We have to realize what this country's economy has become. Our monetary policy, through the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, privatized the money supply, gathers the wealth, puts it in the hands of the few while the Federal Reserve can create money out of nothing, give it to banks to park at the Fed while our small businesses are starving for capital.
Mark my words -- Wall Street cashes in whether we have a default or not. And the same type of thinking that created billions in bailouts for Wall Street and more than $1 trillion in giveaways by the Federal Reserve today leaves 26 million Americans either underemployed or unemployed. And nine out of ten Americans over the age of 65 are facing cuts in their Social Security in order to pay for a debt which grew from tax cuts for the rich and for endless wars.
There is a massive transfer of wealth from the American people to the hands of a few and it's going on right now as America's eyes are misdirected to the political theater of these histrionic debt negotiations, threats to shut down the government, and willingness to make the most Americans pay dearly for debts they did not create.
These are symptoms of a government which has lost its way, and they are a challenge to the legitimacy of the two-party system.

Except that the two party system is the problem...leave the Democratic Party, Dennis.
Exactly. Leave the party, Dennis. Run for president and give progressives someone to vote for in 2012. Your words speak the truth, but.talk is cheap.
Do something.
Makes way too much sense, maciek. This is where the dividing line between sanity and insanity lies. Truth vs hypocrisy. Kucinich doesn't actually mean what he says. If he did he'd be looking for others to work with instead of his lying peers in the democratic party. Despite his words, they mean nothing. He means nothing. Its pointless for him to write, speak or occupy his congressional seat.
He's a talker, not a walker.
The man is in Congress, and has been a candidate for Prezident!
He's done a l i t t l e bit of "walking" now, hasn't he?
Oh I'm with you.
I'm just not sure that will happen until one of the current Two Parties falls apart.
The rest of the problem is that the two parties both have their own special interests/lobbyists padding their wallets. They will always have the money they need to keep playing their games. The system is broken. We need a candidate -- as some of you have noted -- to run as a progressive or create a new party altogether...
to bring back some equality to the process. The current electoral system is rigged, they move and change districts throughout the country with very little resistance or knowledge to the public. The legislative process is so convoluted, so complex, including the pathetic tax code -- which also needs to be revamped --(Obama did use this as a threat to the Repubs last week)... and their are so many bad laws, that we need a real leader to straighten it out. I think Obama started off on the right foot.. but somehow, somewhere something happened.... ( probably pressure from the Corporatocracy) ... and We The People were left on the sidelines. I think they are starting to see the American people are perturbed with all of them, but as far as we having much power with the current system -- doesn't look too good for We The People who work our tails off for Corps, Congress, the Feds and the IRS. They are also trying to pit young against old.. which is pathetic and disturbing. The youth are paying into Medicare and Social Security and they will get ripped off more than those of us already collecting. We should all be ticked off! It isn't even voluntary to contribute, I had to do it and you have to put into it.. and they even want to take that away from us -- that which we are paying for out of OUR paychecks! What's wrong with this picture folks! Keep making your voices heard. Maybe, someone will listen. If not, well--- that's another story.
I confused by the number of people who seem to feel we have a two party system of government, Aside from the fact that "parties" are not part of our government according to the Constitution (those mere words on paper that Rumsfeld found so quaint), there is functionally one party in America. Let's call it the Republicrat Party, although the neo-fascist party is more accurate. Kucinch runs as a Democrat because he needs their money to run. If we had free elections he could split off and join the Progressives and maybe even win. But I think the majority of Americans are domesticated animals more than willing to walk up the ramp toward the whirling blades. I think it is incredibly important for people to read the writings of Mussolini as he not only defines fascism but explains how to keep it in power. His description precisely matches the platform of the RNC! So if they war like fascists, run the country into default like fascists, and speak exactly like fascists, how can we continue to call them "Republicans"? You give them scapegoats to hate (Muslims and Liberals) You keep them in perpetual war. (we just entered a new war, grand total 4) You keep them ignorant by controlling the news sources (Rupert Murdoch ring a bell? Fox News?) You re-write history (Texas textbooks Inc.) You fill the environment with spies, falsehoods, fear and poverty, putting one against the other and none against their true enemy: the State.

So you want to abandon LBJ and let Nixon replace him?
That's the problem, some freedom we have when we have to choose between the worst of two evils. But a third party candidate has little chance, because of the electoral process and how the system is rigged.
I think they were joking.
That's what would have been said in 1968 when people first began this endless "Takeover the Blues vs New Party" debate.
I'm too young to get it at first either. ;)
LBG/ Nixon?
Hey wake up BOB Obama and many democrats are to the RIGHT of Reagan!!
Reagan increased taxes repeatedly albeit on low and middle income earners...
The upper tax rate was higher than it is NOW
He IS a talker, thinker and in this country now that takes guts. If WE THE PEOPLE don't start doing some walking and marching; we are history. Our forefathers weren't concerned about invasion...they were worried about the greed for money and power that would take us down. You can forget about the left (arm) or the right (arm) if the body doesn't come together we're history. Yes Wall Street will fail... they are not socking away the big bucks now to make jobs later (they have had a dozen years to do that)...they are preparing for when women who get less than $500 a month on Social Security stop shopping at Wal-Mart...one more cut in social security should do it.
I'm sorry, but someone who freely admits he's philosophically opposed to the Civil Rights Act is morally unfit for any elected office.
"Perhaps you can even sway RP to increase taxes on the top 10%"
Persuade a Rethug libertarian to increase taxes -- now that's Everclear-proof delusion!
What would be really perfect is if Kucinich would try another "primary" (read "intra-party nominee elections") run. Hit the wall that he has before, AND THEN ditch the Blue Party for an Independent or new-party building run.
That would give him both the greatest public exposure AND be the strongest repudiation of the current Blue leadership.
*sending mind-waves to Kucinich*
I think he heard me. ;)
Every time I get to thinking I'm a pretty bright guy with great answers to a lot of questions I run aground against one that I can never answer.....
With men of the caliber of Dennis Kucinich WHY are we stuck with a pile of dawgschitt candidates on the right and an empty shell of promises in the White House?
Imagine having candidates like Dennis Kucinich & Elizabeth Warren to work for! The current crop couldn't find "integrity" in the dictionary with the page number given to them.
Here's the wikipedia link to the definition if you want to know what it really means, as obviously few inside the DC beltway have a clue....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrity
"These are symptoms of a government which has lost its way, and they are a challenge to the legitimacy of the two-party system."
He appears to be flirting with the idea. ;)
I think he might be thinking of running. I think Bernie Sanders from Vermont is the other one who has been encouraged to run. These are very interesting times, makes me think of the early years when our country was being established and what they had to do to fight for their rights. It's challenging times for us all as Americans.
I know that in the usa cash is king.. but I would like to hear a little about the dead kids in these wars cause, the killing fields that your tax dollars create.
Some how the human cost of empire building seems to be lost and is not spoken of
any more..only the money ..
An old indian told me that mother earth will rise up and shake the fleas off her back.
That time draws near.
Many have written and spoken about this many times -including Rep. Kucinich.
We need to be able to discuss other aspects of the situation as well.
But we should never forget the cost in lives and misery.
Thank you.
Are you reading that ALEC thing? The repubs have been planning this for over thirty years, and had everything ready when they got their chance.
So, let's plan.THEY didn't sit around howling about how difficult it would be, or how stupid americans are, or all that other roll-over-and-die crap. They got ready.
we produce more good and services with less labor than ever before
we can easily take care of everyone
agree this is a totally manufacturered "crisis" caused by the greed of the few
So damned agreed!
I'd recommend P. Kropotkin's "The Conquest of Bread" as a starting point for anyone interested in the practicalities of reforming the production system to satisfy need not greed.
Thank you everyone should read Kropotkin one of the few political thinkers who rose to the level of poet and visionary and all that WITHOUT religion or faux spirituality. We need to figure out the worker self managed co-op thing soon or be squashed like bugs.
"we produce more good and services with less labor than ever before"
Yet still we are enslaved ~ by consent at the moment.
Then do everyone a favor Dennis, you or Russ Feingold must run against Obama in 2012! If not throw your public support behind Cynthia McKinney or Ralph Nader for President. Just don't accept anymore rides on Air Force 1 OK?
If Dennis made a decisive break with the Dem ruling class, they wouldn't hesitate to give him the McKinney Treatment. And that would silence him just as it's silenced Cynthia.
He's doing all he can to wake people up to what's going on. It's up to us to make use of it.
They already gave him the McKinney treatment last time around...
Kucinich voted for the insurance health care bill and in this article criticizes the insurance companies. Kucinich voted for tax cuts and criticizes the transfer of wealth. He is already silenced by M$M.
If the entire Progressive caucus walked out of the D party, it would destroy the D ruling class. This is what the radical Lincoln Republicans did to the Whigs (thus killing off the Whig party). They can then start a Progressive/Populist party. It's basically the only way, historically, a 3rd party ever gets started here, with a substantial number of insiders from already-established parties, with established contacts, and established "favors" to call in.
Nicely stated: but...
Do you really believe that is going to happen given the progressive caucus already caved to OBama on the Health Bill?
Odds are against it. But we ARE living in strange times, where "business-as-usual" will give way to "something completely different" (like the birth of the Republican party, and the resulting 4-way race for the presidency, leading into the civil war). Maybe we'll have a Democrat, a Republican, a Teabagger, and a Progressive/Populist faction vying for dominance, in a very "heated" way.
I like your optimism, lnb. :)
A lot has happened since progressives caved on the health care bill and none of it indicates that caving is a winning strategy.
Good comment.
Yes, Very good comment. The handwriting is on the wall, the ceiling, the floor, the lamp. Everywhere we look, the signs are there. The rhetoric is never ending. Wheels spinning in sand against the monster created. I think of three things. Professional wrestling, Invasion of the body snatchers, and a puzzle. Jesse Ventura said that politics are like professional wrestling. In front of the cameras, they all hate each other and put on a show. Behind the scenes, they are all buddies and have dinner together probably talking about how to best dupe the public.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Can we really tell who is who ? The general public can't discern the monster disguised as a neighbor, friend, politician feeding them lies, ready to assimilate and destroy. A puzzle. Staring at the same pieces for 10 years, slowly the picture comes into focus as it assembles. Wait, there is a piece on the floor under the table. Something like Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine". Ah yes, that helped bring more sections together, picture almost visible. Wow, this picture is horrible ! Scatter the pieces and close my eyes. Wheels spinning in the sand !
The MSM controlled by the rich power brokers sets the agenda. Look at how the Koch Bros. have used the media to utterly cram their doctrine down our throats. We didn't know for the longest where this was coming from. They will label, lie and distort the facts to make anything populist (for the working people) the Second Coming of Communism! They want the US to follow what they call, "The Great Miracle of Chile." (See below from Greg Palast).
Americans need to get their heads out of their. . . TV's, computer games and pay attention to what is really happening or when the electricity goes off they'll be wandering around in the dark.
ABOUT CHILE
In 1973, the year General Pinochet brutally seized the government, Chile's unemployment rate was 4.3%. In 1983, after ten years of free-market modernization, unemployment reached 22%. Real wages declined by 40% under military rule.
In 1970, 20% of Chile's population lived in poverty. By 1990, the year "President" Pinochet left office, the number of destitute had doubled to 40%. Quite a miracle.
Pinochet did not destroy Chile's economy all alone. It took nine years of hard work by the most brilliant minds in world academia, a gaggle of Milton Friedman's trainees, the Chicago Boys. Under the spell of their theories, the General abolished the minimum wage, outlawed trade union bargaining rights, privatized the pension system, abolished all taxes on wealth and on business profits, slashed public employment, privatized 212 state industries and 66 banks and ran a fiscal surplus.
Freed of the dead hand of bureaucracy, taxes and union rules, the country took a giant leap forward ... into bankruptcy and depression. After nine years of economics Chicago style, Chile's industry keeled over and died. In 1982 and 1983, GDP dropped 19%.
A few of course, did very well. The majority, of the others sadly not.
Yes when there is no label the American public at large is FOR a good system/idea as proven by the study (which title escapes me) showing a vast majority picking the tax/social system of Sweden over the current US system and one favoring even more the few a the top.
Read now or read again "Building a Better America"
Americans across the board want a more progressive share of wealth/ taxes: just don't call it progressive!
All the Progs would have to do is assure the public that their Congressional candidates are willing to caucus with the Blues just like the Progs do now, and that -if it came to it- their Prez candidate would instruct his Electors to vote for the Blue candidate (Obama) to prevent a Red Party victory. In the majority of States where Electors are assigned on a "winner take all" basis, the Prog Prez candidate could simply make clear from the beginning that if the "race" is to tight in a given State, he/she would drop out/endorse the Blue candidate.
Thus ending the silly "spoiler" argument for good (hopefully).
If the Progs have the guts, it would work.
Lincoln and the Republicans were bold, bold fellows fired by great conviction.
Are the Progs?
I'd really like to think so.
Doesn't sound like guts to me.
See, there's different levels of gutsiness.
A Progressive ditching of the Blues is at one level.
Running the Green Party into the ground and then keeping it there for a decade is at another. ;)
It's a good idea. Getting everyone to agree on doing it that is a progressive is the challenge.
"Mairead"
As far as I can tell, Kucinich (and all of the other so-called Progressive democrats) is either just delusional or is a sado-masochist who stays in the clubhouse specifically so that what he claims to believe in will not come about.
Anyone who is not skeptical about him is also, at best, delusional.
Kucinich regularly makes proposals which, he knows, have no chance of success (even within his CHOSEN party) and says lots of things which are very, very appealing and totally at odds with the agenda of the party he CHOOSES to support.
He has a purpose in doing this and I do not believe it is to be found in his words.
He cannot be seen as anything more than a party tool until he rejects the party.
Integrity of words and actions can only occur when he rejects the corruption which he is now enabling.
Dennis Kucinich has lived his principles and wound up sleeping in his car for it!
Remember that when he was the "Boy Wonder" youngest elected Mayor of
Cleveland decades ago he refused to cave to the banking elite who was desperate
to grab Cleveland's Municipal Power.
Dennis refused to give it up and in turn the Banks put Cleveland into bankruptcy
which destroyed Kucinich chance for re-election and his political career for some years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Kucinich
Kucinich has had the guts to begin to bring up the issue of Impeachment against
Obama and gotten a number of votes for it.
I agree it is time for true progressives to leave the Democrats who have become
neo-liberal shills using progressives as a shield to disguise their recent capitulations
to Corporations and the wealthy.
But Dennis Kucinich has fought and lived his principles his whole life.
Right on orbit7er.
I like the article. But wouldn't the article have a better titile if the last part read "While Americans' Wealth is Robbed"? It's a thought. Why don't we at least allow it some consideration?
Don't we know what robberies by Wall Street look like given that 2008 "transformational change we can believe in" going straight to Wall Street with no strings attached?
Just so, orbit7er. Well said.
Do you call voting for tax cuts for the wealthy and voting for Corporate Insurance living his principles? As far as Cleveland's Municipal Power, that was good, but is long ago history, and if that is how far you have to go back to dig up something concrete Kucinich has done, it doesn't help your campaign.
Name another politician who's done something as good for ordinary people more recently.
