A Big Fool Says to Push On
Obama’s Afghanistan War: Waist Deep in the Muddy and the Captain Says Push On
On the eve of the beginning of the tenth year (October 7) of the U.S war in Afghanistan, Bob Woodward’s new book “Obama’s War” about presidential decision making on the war in Afghanistan is pretty scary reading. It sounds to me like folk singer Peter Seeger’s song about the Vietnam war “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” describes the U.S. war in Afghanistan.
The song “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” tells about an Army platoon slogging through a Louisiana river during field exercises in 1942. The Captain of the platoon ignores the platoon sergeant’s advice about the depth of the river and commands the platoon to continue on until the platoon members are up to their necks in swirling water. The Captain orders the platoon to “push on” and disappears underwater to drown. The Sergeant immediately orders the platoon to turn around and head out of the deep water.
Pete Seeger sang “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy” at anti-war rallies in 1967 and 1968 during President Lyndon Johnson’s escalation of the U.S. military involvement in Vietnam. The verse in which the Captain calls the sergeant a “Nervous Nelly” reflects President Johnson’s attitude toward critics of the Vietnam war. The song touched a raw nerve in the White House which was transmitted to the CBS TV network when it refused to broadcast Pete Seeger singing it on the Smother Brothers TV show because of the song’s “political tone.”
Would Sergeant Obama Challenge the Captains of War?
I had hoped that when Obama became President he would have been the Sergeant challenging the “Captains” of the Department of Defense and the U.S. military, the architects of the Afghanistan and Iraq war policies, on the depth of the water of the wars he had inherited.
But Sergeant Obama has not said “turn around.” Instead, Sergeant Obama gave himself a field commission to Captain and joined the Captains of the military and the Captains of industry who are leading the platoon into the deep waters of Afghanistan.
How did Captain/President Obama decide to head us for deeper water?
In his book “Obama’s War,” Bob Woodward recounts that “At critical points in the review, the ghosts of Vietnam hovered. Some participants openly worried that they were on the verge of replaying that history, allowing the military to dictate the force levels. While Obama sought to build an exit plan into the strategy, the military leadership stuck to its open-ended proposal, which the Office of Management and Budget estimated would cost $889 billion over a decade. Obama brought the OMB memo to one meeting and said the expense was "not in the national interest."
“For two exhausting months, he had been asking military advisers to give him a range of options for the war in Afghanistan. Instead, he felt that they were steering him toward one outcome and thwarting his search for an exit plan. He would later tell his White House aides that military leaders were "really cooking this thing in the direction they wanted."
“He was looking for choices that would limit U.S. involvement and provide a way out. His top three military advisers were unrelenting advocates for 40,000 more troops and an expanded mission that seemed to have no clear end. When his national security team gathered in the White House Situation Room on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2009, for its eighth strategy review session, the president erupted.”
"So what's my option? You have given me one option," Obama said, directly challenging the military leadership at the table, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen and Army General David Petraeus, then head of U.S. Central Command.
"We were going to meet here today to talk about three options," Obama said sternly. "You agreed to go back and work those up."
Mullen protested. "I think what we've tried to do here is present a range of options."
Obama begged to differ. Two weren't even close to feasible, they all had acknowledged; the other two were variations on the 40,000.
Silence descended on the room. Finally, Mullen said, "Well, yes, sir."
No options but war!
But Obama ended up not forcing the military to provide any real options to increased war.
And now, we are waist deep in the big muddy of Afghanistan and the President says “push on.”
We desperately need a sergeant to turn our platoon around and head us back to the safety of the shore before we all drown in the costs of war-human and financial.
Lyrics to Waist Deep In The Big Muddy
By
Pete Seeger
It was back in nineteen forty-two,
I was a member of a good platoon.
We were on maneuvers in-a Loozianna,
One night by the light of the moon.
The captain told us to ford a river,
That's how it all begun.
We were -- knee deep in the Big Muddy,
But the big fool said to push on.
The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sure,
This is the best way back to the base?"
"Sergeant, go on! I forded this river
'Bout a mile above this place.
It'll be a little soggy but just keep slogging.
We'll soon be on dry ground."
We were -- waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool said to push on.
The Sergeant said, "Sir, with all this equipment
No man will be able to swim."
"Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nellie,"
The Captain said to him.
"All we need is a little determination;
Men, follow me, I'll lead on."
We were -- neck deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool said to push on.
All at once, the moon clouded over,
We heard a gurgling cry.
A few seconds later, the captain's helmet
Was all that floated by.
The Sergeant said, "Turn around men!
I'm in charge from now on."
And we just made it out of the Big Muddy
With the captain dead and gone.
We stripped and dived and found his body
Stuck in the old quicksand.
I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper
Than the place he'd once before been.
Another stream had joined the Big Muddy
'Bout a half mile from where we'd gone.
We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy
When the big fool said to push on.
Well, I'm not going to point any moral;
I'll leave that for yourself
Maybe you're still walking, you're still talking
You'd like to keep your health.
But every time I read the papers
That old feeling comes on;
We're -- waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.
Waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.
Waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.
Waist deep! Neck deep! Soon even a.
Tall man'll be over his head, we're
Waist deep in the Big Muddy!
And the big fool says to push on!

Show AllThe problem with this scenario, as Amy Wright should have realized, is that determining an "exit" strategy is not something the military should be charged with.
How to get out of this mess will require statemanship and diplomacy, not military action.
Once a plan is in place, the actual orderly and safe withdrawal of American troops becomes the responsibility of the military.
Why not let the military just run everything and put all of government under the DoD?
There's no escaping it, Obama is truly clueless.
Sorry it took me so long to see it.
Who is Amy Wright?
q
If you had read the bottom of the article you would have discovered who Ann [not Amy] Wright is. She was also one of the activists who had been on one of the relief aid ships that had been attacked by Israeli commandos last May.
Yes, of course Ann. Carelessness on my part.
Does Barack Obama really need someone from the military to advise him that a military solution to Afghanistan is no solution at all? It is as if in Obama's world the Vietnam conflict never occurred. But of course it most certainly did happen with close to 60,000 Americans returning home in body bags, hundreds of thousands maimed and crippled, and approximately 3 million Vietnamese slaughtered by the U.S. military. Unfortunately Obama's memory lapse should not come as all that much of a surprise as he has been on record as stating that he was never a big believer in the values of the 1960s. Perhaps like George H.W. Bush Barack Obama believes that he too will someday say to the American people that he has licked the Vietnam syndrome. But one strongly suspects that the Afghan people will have something to say about that.
Obama is no fool. Obama is a tool. I for one can hardly believe that all the made up chatter about seeking 'options' is no more than a pretense of leadership. This country, in it's distant past actually produced political leaders now and then. It was possible for a real candidate to run and win so along with all the chaff, occasionally an actual leader could emerge. That does not seem possible any longer. All the great leaders of the past, from Washington to Lincoln,to Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt warned the American public about the dangers of private wealth and power to overwhelm our republic. They knew the difference between honest assessments and a careerist's ambition. Obama does not know. He thinks all those jackals are 'savvy' He gained the trust and votes of many millions of people campaigning on the virtue of change. Now in office, he no longer trusts their assessments.
Don't forget that Obama's personsl wealth is well over five million and he himself is now "as dangerous to our republic" as the others of private wealth and power!!!
He is only masquerading as "one of us!"
Masquerading?? He's always been a tool for the man, we just turned a blind eye to all that, just as we turned a blind eye to GWB's drug-addled past. But it's not B's fault, the presidency itself is a tool to much more sinister powers who write their own history.
And Pete Seeger is still singing and standing tall [at 91] once a week at the peace vigil near his home in Beacon NY!
To every thing (turn turn turn) there is a season (turn turn turn) and a time for every purpose under heaven.

I turned over the piece of paper, and there, there on the other side - in the middle of the other side, away from everything else on the other side - in parentheses, capital letters, quotated, read the following words:
( "KID, HAVE YOU REHABILITATED YOURSELF?" )
I went over to the sergeant, said, "Sergeant, you got a lot a damn gall to ask me if I've rehabilitated myself, I mean, I'm sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug." He looked at me and said, "Kid, we don't like your kind, and we're gonna send your fingerprints off to Washington."
And friends, somewhere in Washington enshrined in some little folder, is a study in black and white of my fingerprints. And the only reason I'm singing you this song now is 'cause you may know somebody in a similar situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if you're in a situation like that, there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into the shrink wherever you are, just walk in, say "Shrink, you can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant". And walk out.
You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and they won't take him. And if two people -two people do it, in harmony - they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.
And if three people do it, can you imagine, three people walking in singin' a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day walking in singin' a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. And, friends, they may think it's a movement.
--Arlo Guthrie

Alice's Restaurant-one of my all time favorites. Every Thanksgiving since the song was written a radio station, KSHE, in St. Louis has played it at 12:00 noon. It just so happens that a my group of grade school buddies, various other friends we've met along the way and now even our kids get together to play a soccer game on Thanksgiving(it started out as bone crush football in 1972 but we all got a little to old for that). We all try to get there by noon when we crank up the car stereos and sing along with Arlo-even the hardcore conservatives that make up most of my grade school buddies. Then we divide up teams, now we do over 30 vs under 30, and play a game of soccer. So for almost 40 years we've been enjoying Alice's Restaurant at high noon on T-day!!
OYE
In 1967, in the Chicago Loop, I attended a standing-room-only concert of Arlo Guthrie. We sang our heads off. You have a found a wonderful tradition for Thanksgiving Day.
Not long after this concert, other youth and I who chose exile sang:
..Pussywillows cat-tails soft winds and roses
..Rainpools in the woodland water to my knees
..Shivering quivering the warm breath of spring
..Pussywillows cat-tails soft winds and roses
..Catbirds and cornfields, daydreams together
..Riding on the roadside the dust gets in your eyes
..Reveling, disheveling the summer nights can bring
..Pussywillows cat-tails soft winds and roses
- - - Gordon Lightfoot
Careful you're going to show your age-ha ha! Would have been great to have been at that concert.
It's interesting that you say you "chose exile". Was that in resistance to the draft? If you don't mind my asking, where did you end up? I was fortunate to be "young" enough to have missed the draft--they stopped it the year my number was to have come up-it was probably low enough-183-that I would have been drafted. I then would have had to made a very difficult decision. Originally, I wasn't going to sign up for the draft as a protest but I was told that I wouldn't be able to get a passport if I didn't sign up and I had plans to live in Peru after high school so I signed up.
I just don't get it.
Where did Obama get the idea his options were controlled by the military?
I thought he was their Commander in Chief. I thought he told them what THEIR options were, not the other way around. Plus I thought he set the options in the campaign.
He really fooled me. I thought his promise about Afghanistan in the election was to send in some elite forces who'd hunt down Osama Bin Laden and when they got him we'd bug out with a Victory March down every mainstreet in the country. Wasn't that what "Finish the job" meant?
Instead he channeled Bush's attitude that Bin Laden didn't matter but somehow securing all of Afghanistan did.
Frank,
I get it.
I agree with you.
C:)
I guess somebody missed something: I recall clearly that he justified the Afghan war/occupation as a worthy and honorable endeavor and promised to draw down forces in Iraq and escalate forces in Afg. In this rare case, he is keeping his promise. He lied about a great many other things, but not this. I reckon we should congratulate him eh?
Get real. Do you really think the military would let a mulatto be CinC in anything but name? I'm sure it didn't take much for Obama to "stand down", these are people who kill millions without losing a wink of sleep.
As if Osama Bin Laden was responsible for 9/11.....................
Does anyone really believe that?
Even the FBI doesen't believe it - he is not listed as a suspect. Check the website.
Exactly. I think it is becoming a bit obvious that Woodward's piece is actually cover for his "decision" to escalate rather then impose a decision to de-escalate, or at least draw a firm line for the end of occupation.
Now he and his "defenders" can point to the intransigence of the military (just like he blame shifts on to Republicans) not his own contract with the MIC that determines our Foreign policy.
Woodward's piece is a well conceived farce. Don't buy into it, its biz-as-usual ammo.
Barack Obama is an uncle tom to the power of ten. The man is pure evil.
“(Obama) was looking for choices that would limit U.S. involvement and provide a way out . . . But Obama ended up not forcing the military to provide any real options to increased war."
Obama is not merely the very antithesis of a leader; he is a truly evil human being. I can't read this any other way.
I agree....in fact, the Evil that Obama envelopes is the CLASSIC definition by the nuremberg trials lead american prosecutor psychologist who interviewed the nazi criminals...
that he was taken aback more by how "ordinary" or "RESPECTABLE" these criminals and evil people were...and how CLINICAL their attitude was....JUST LIKE BARACK OBAMA....with what he called "a complete ABSENCE of conscience" - an emptiness of empathy or SENSE of what others are suffering from....as what he "learned" EVIL is among human beings.
and you can readily observe this "clinical" hollowness , emptiness in obama ...every moment he opens his mouth:
"we've accomplished some things, folks"
"but there's more to do"
"it's only been 2 years folks"...
as if , like the Nuremberg Nazi criminals interviewed , merely LISTING OUT a shopping list of ingredients for a house painting...nothing more.
...and joining their Commander and Chief, the Common Dilemma Singers found their positions, struck up another chorus of Evil, Evil! There's Evil Loose In The World!...and once again...and again...and again...started to turn, turn, turn...another season of The Rock Of Sisyphus -- how classically, ordinarily, human -- "Push On! Push On! Push On!"
Obama--A perfect example of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Well...that gives us something a little more then "evil" to work with. What's the best way to engage with, or go around, a person displaying NPD actions?
Our wars will finally end when our people, the pawns used by the Ruling Class to fight their wars for profits, wake up and refuse to be dragged into them any more.
This election season, use the facts and figures from the National Priorities Project (http://www.nationalpriorities.org/) to show how much $$$ our wars cost us and how that $$$ could have been better used (see Trade-offs).
Then DEMAND of all candidates that they support a progressive war tax, especially on war profiteers, so our war-caused budget deficits can be decreased. Any candidate who refuses to support a tax to pay for our deficit-causing wars can then be accused of treason and not supporting our troops.
As USMC Major Smedley Butler told us long ago, "War is a Racket".
Tax that despicable, sociopathic racket into oblivion.
Ed, It is Major General Smedley D. Butler. Please don't demote the poor man five pay grades!
Sorry! In my haste, I demoted him!
I'll re-promote him now: Major General Smedley D. Butler
The US military is a disgrace. Their leaders don't even do what the President commands them to do. Gates, Mullen and Betrayus should have been removed from government as soon as they failed to provide Obama with real options. Monkies could do better work than these miscreants.
This country is being run by the a shadow military government which came into power with the military coup for Florida's electoral college in 2000. The illegally counted military absentee ballots cast after the election and counted gave Bush the lead in the vote count and then the SCOTUS selected Bush as president. Had these vote been disallowed according to law Gore would have had the most votes and the SCOTUS couldn't have intervened. Due to the electoral college a coup in the USA only needs a few key states, not the entire country.
Obama was carefully selected. Monies to win office would not have gone to him were he not meeting the approval of the Corporations and special interest groups sending him that money.
This not and issue of "Bad advice" or being "used by the Military officers". It has nothing to do with ghosts of Vietnam or terrorism.
It is to implement a long sought after policy to dominate the energy rich regions of the world with the US Military, and to encircle Russia and checkmate China so as to maintain American Hegonomy.
This at the behest of the Corporations which want to extend their tentacles everywhere and control the worlds resources.
Hilary Clinton has already warned China that unless they support sanctions on Iran, China would risj losing the Middle East as a source of Oil. Anti Missile bases being put in Poland can not possibly intercept Missiles launched from Iran.
GW North: "It is to implement a long sought after policy to dominate the energy rich regions of the world with the US Military, and to encircle Russia and checkmate China so as to maintain American Hegonomy." (Hegemony)
nicely stated
True. And to find a use for all our very profitable military technology industry. Profitable to a few favored individuals, that is. Bankrupting for the rest of us.
Joe
Hillary took obama to AIPAC conference in DC for the stamp of approval, before the nomination, remember? with Hilarry vouching, ohbama gave the pledge of "unconditional support" for the AIPAC agenda first before the approval.
Ann Wright is a very brave individual, not because of her military service, but because of her stand against injustice and institutional corruption. She was on one of the boats that attempted to break through the illegal Israeli blockade. (she had her personal belongings stolen by the Israeli military thugs if I recall)
One thing that I find a bit inconsistent about using Woodward's account:
I recall very clearly that throughout Obama's campaign he repeated that he would draw down forces from Iraq and escalate the occupation of Afghanistan and repeated the usual Teorrism blah blah, Al-Quaeda blah blah, Taleban blah blah lies of the Cheney administration. He spoke of the Aghan war/occupation as being a worthy and just endeavor.
Perhaps I am missing something, but why is Obama portayed as being against escalation and occupation?
>"...why is Obama portayed as being against escalation and occupation?"
A lot of people who voted for the Obama brand heard what they wanted to hear.
They weren't listening closely, nor were they thinking critically. In their minds, Obama was one of the "good guys," and he would save us from the previous 8 years, and give us "change" from Bush/Cheney, and he promised to get us out of Iraq.
But somehow the "escalate in Afghanistan" part just didn't register with many Obama voters.
Me, I heard the war President rhetoric clearly -- from both Obama and Clinton -- and so I voted for McKinney.
socialist. I believe it is because the Woodward piece is a very cleverly contrived cover for Obama to blame shift away from Obama the hoper and allow Obama the politician to do what he is told, ie; maintain the policies of the MIC.
Are we really to believe that Woodward would continually be able to access all the inside "scoops" without an underlying benefit to those who are his subjects?
These wars are completely criminal! Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should be in jail cells awaiting trial for crimes against humanity. All troops should be withdrawn IMMEDIATELY! No more bullshit! Every day the criminals of the military industrial congressional complex make millions more in blood-soaked profits. The heads of the military industrial corporations should also be tried right along side Bush and his criminal cronies.
Yes of course assuming that morality was not external to economics and politics. (externalities and normative values), Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Bush family crony Robert "uncle Bobby" Gates would be on the dock in the Hague as well. But as we say in my native working-class vernacular: that aint hapnin
Obama should to sack the whole warmongering lot of 'em, Mullen, Gates, and most of all, the lousy Petraeus. Then he should put some decent, rational people in there, like maybe General Tuguba, and force the military to come up with a decent exit plan that will quickly move us toward peace.
Oh, and he'd better have the Secret Service step up patrols of the White house. We don't want any military-industrial fascist coups here!
The USA has had a military, industrial, fascist coup and it is the shadow USG which is what rules the country. The coup in 2000 was accomplished by the counting of the illegal absentee military ballots, cast after the election which enabled the SCOTUS to select Bush as president. A coup in this country only requires a few key states because of the Electoral College and doesn't need too encompass the entire country.Plus, I don't think Gore wanted to win.
If not Obama, who? If he can change, terrific.
And, I hope it happens soon as we're all on a collision course with the fate of this nation, such as it is.
China waits for the hammer to fall.
Wright sez: "I had hoped that when Obama became President he would have ..."
***
It's probably not your fault. That "hope" thing was pretty contagious at the time.
WHY? WHY?? WHY??? didn't you guys READ THE CANDIDATES' VOTING RECORDS before you cast your vote? Then you complain that we're speeding toward Fascism ...
Obama is not a leader. He isn't even a good follower.
Real leaders keep their promises and they govern in ways their constituents expect and can understand.
Real leaders stand up for what they believe in.
Obama leaves the military to run itself and puts BP in charge of the environment. He puts vicious health care corporations in charge of our health and crap shooters on Wall Street in charge of the economy. He lets the Democratic Party suits decide policy. He's not even a good figurehead.
You'd think someone of his race and background would understand the special importance of his presidency and at least put a little effort into it.
cadawa,
Well stated.
"You'd think someone of his race and background would understand the special importance of his presidency and at least put a little effort into it."
The election of Obama as POTUS proves that race and background really do NOT matter.
This is what the end of empire looks like. It's not pretty. The oligarchs have already gotten out. Off shore tax havens anyone? The military is in charge of the government. It exists simply to justify itself. Expect more wars in more places before the whole thing comes crashing down. The idiots are in charge.
