One In Four Mammals Risks Extinction
BARCELONA, Spain - A quarter of the world's mammals are threatened with extinction, an international survey showed on Monday, and the destruction of habitats and hunting are the major causes.
The report, the most comprehensive to date by 1,700 researchers,
showed populations of half of all 5,487 species of mammals were in
decline. Mammals range in size from blue whales to Thailand's
insect-sized bumblebee bat.
"Mammals are declining faster than we thought -- one in four species is threatened with extinction worldwide," Jan Schipper, who led the team, told Reuters of the report issued in Barcelona as part of a "Red List" of threatened species.
He said threats were worst for land mammals in Asia, where creatures
such as orang utans are suffering from deforestation. Almost 80 percent
of primates in the region were under threat.
Click here to see additional photos.
Of the 4,651 mammals for which scientists have data, 1,139 species were under threat of extinction. Schipper said the data was far broader than the previous review of mammals in 1996.
Threats to species including the Tasmanian Devil, an Australian marsupial, the Caspian seal or the fishing cat, found in Asia, were among those to have worsened. At least 76 mammals have gone extinct since 1500.
"Within our lifetime hundreds of species could be lost as a result of our own actions," said Julia Marton-Lefevre, director general of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which compiles the Red List and is meeting in Spain.
IBERIAN LYNX
Of the 2008 total, 188 were listed as "critically endangered," the worst category before extinction, including the Iberian lynx of which there are just 84-143 adults left. Cuba's rat-like little earth hutia has not been seen in 40 years.
Habitat loss and hunting -- for everything from food to medicines -- "are by far the main threats to mammals," Schipper and his team wrote in the journal Science. "The population of one in two is declining," they said.
Among other threats, global warming blamed by the U.N. Climate Panel on human use of fossil fuels, was hitting species dependent on Arctic sea ice such as the polar bear.
But the report, issued during an Oct 5-14 IUCN congress, was not all gloom. Five percent of species were recovering because of conservation efforts, including the European bison and the black-footed ferret, found in North America.
The African elephant was also moved down one notch of risk, to "near threatened" from "vulnerable," because of rising populations in southern and eastern Africa.
And a total of 349 species have been found since 1992, such as the elephant shrew in Tanzania, it said. Schipper said some species may be vanishing before they are even described.
The report focused on mammals but the situation for some other types of animals and plants is even worse, according to the IUCN, comprising governments and conservation organizations.
An updated "Red List" said that 16,928 species, or 38 percent, were threatened out of a total of 44,838. Among animals most at risk are amphibians, such as frogs and toads.
Schipper said governments urgently needed to work out ways to protect life on earth. "Conservation action backed by research is a clear priority," he said.

Find and read GAINING PEOPLE LOSING GROUND By Werner Fornos.
My copy is lost somewhere in my house - please excuse me If the author's name is mis-spelled.
We are overdeveloped and overpopulated. That isn't all that we are but I won't get into that now. One of these days and it will probably be to late, people are going to realize and I will say this again and will keep saying it, The human species have overdeveloped everything and we are overpopulated. Until we face this truth anything we do will have no effect at all except on a temporary basis.
There is no willingness to change. People struggle to remain the same. Animals suffer the consequences. People ultimately will follow the animals to destruction. People strongly deny this but I believe it to be true. The religious doctrine of dominion justifies planetary destabilization and destruction in the name of Jesus Christ. Christians seem hell bound to test this religious theory. There will be no peace on Earth or long term survival unless organized religions eliminate their belief in dominion. I see no evidence of that happening and the orgy of religious destruction continues. It's a strange paradox.
Wow--some of this site is really thought-provoking and good. And, then, it just "descends"....some of thsi stuff is just wierd. What are you talking about???? Isnt this supposed to be about the Endangered Species List? That Dubya, just changed to only include "actions that DIRECTLY" resault in death of an ES?
thegreatrockyhill-your post took the words right out of my mouth (well in this case right off my keyboard!) You are right about that. I see a life that deserves to live, i see a soul too! what a sad shame when people can look at life and beings, and only see a 'commodity' to be plundered.
syndly, thanks for the recommends...
Abbybwood, that sounds most mouth watering! i suck at cooking, but roasting vegi's couldnt be that hard...
Recently i quit smoking, after nearly a decade of on again off again, AND I FEEL GREAT! people need to heal themselves, before they can heal others....(it was hard at first, but after a few days i didnt crave it at all; two weeks later i got so so sick, ten years of stuck on mucus making its way out, but now i can BREATHE AGAIN!!!!how liberating it makes me feel, to not be dependant on this outside poison for temporary "diversion" anyways, i just thought i would share that with you.
now to only get the water company to stop putting flouride in our water supply!
Wow. I didn't know there was such a thing as a bumblebee bat.
What's happening to them will happen to us too, aside from the elites who'll surely be living in domes or colonizing other planets.
I look at that pic of the seal, and I see a soul. I see a creature that says "please don't hurt me." Look at those eyes, so fearful and sad.
Now look into the eyes of Cheney or any other card-carrying elite.
Don't succumb to misanthropy people. We're being ruled by rogue humans. They are not God's creatures.

a simple solution is not to pig out on the resources we do have by stuffing your face with another steak, burger, or fried chicken. reject animal agribusiness (including the cruel egg/dairy industry) and don't support them in any way by going veg. if everybody did this, then think of the improvements already with that alone.
"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."
--Albert Einstein, American physicist
One year after Einstein became a vegetarian he died.
and how is that supposed to negate the sentiments he expressed? even if it were true, this goes to show that had he followed a veggie diet years earlier, he probably could have lived longer.... all those years of eating flesh can clog the arteries and cause other health problems. i believe he was an old man by then too.
"If man wants freedom why keep birds and animals in cages? Truly man
is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the

the use of meat." -Leonardo-da-Vinci
"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."

It's not that difficult to change over to a vegetarian diet that is healthy and will also help one lose unwanted pounds!
I awaken and brew a pot of fair trade organic coffee from Thecoffeefool.com "Fools Velvet Hammer" is my choice.
After a few large mugs of that, black, I do my Poland Spring Water and pure cranberry juice (no sugar!) cocktail with a heaping teaspoon of psyllium husks.
Then I do my shake around noon of organic almond milk with no sugar, a touch of Martinelli's unfiltered apple juice, a heaping teaspoon of organic peanut butter, a teaspoon of probiotic stuff??, 2 T. of no hormone, organic whey protein powder, an organic banana, a swig of Noni juice and about a tablespoon of organic flaxseed oil plus a little Gogi juice. That carries me until around 3pm. If I get thirsty I enjoy more of the no sugar NATURAL cranberry juice and some San Pelligrino or, if it's cold outside, just some cranberry juice and hot water. It's like a soothing and hydrating cranberry tea.
Around 5 or 6ish I take a big frying pan and put some organic vegetable broth in it. Then I'll add my favorite veggies. First the hard stuff, like brussel sprouts, chunks of carrot etc. I'll throw a potato in the oven to bake. What ever is in season gets thrown into the skillet. Lately I've been cutting corn off the sweet husks from the mid-Long Island areas. I'll saute this until it's just tender/crisp. (Not mush).
I'll take the baked potato, cut it into chunks and perhaps cube up a nice tomato (locally grown) and some nice canned black beans and put it on top of the potato with a dressing I get from the health food store called, "Bragg All Natural Ginger and Sesame Salad Dressing".
Believe me, all that is a MEAL!!!
Once in a blue moon I'll buy a can of wild caught red salmon and add that to the mix.
If I feel like it I'll have a little glass of red wine, maybe a nice Chianti.
Then in the evening, if I'm hungry, say around 10 pm, I'll have some no hormones added organic lowfat cottage cheese with a sliced peach and some organic wheat germ added (plus a teaspoon of my homemade peach butter!! with very little sugar!) for a snack.
And then a cup of organic Yogi Bedtime tea at the end of the day.
So, you see, except for the occasional salmon, I am a happy vegetarian who does a little dairy and no eggs. I can live without the salmon if necessary.
We could all easily live very well, and quite healthily, with the diet I suggested above. Imagine what this would do for the planet if we started a campaign to eat organically and with predominately things that grow in the ground.
Thanks for reading this!
Good thing our CO2 is preventing the next ice age, this would kill off more than 1/4.
Interesting article here that discusses the IUCN
http://larouchepub.com/eiw/public/2008/2008_10-19/2008-17/pdf/60-63_3517.pdf
BTW, many of these animals get eaten by each other. Species evolve or become extinct. The way I see it is man is in a state of splitting into 2 distinct species, one species is the 10% or so who have evolved, and 90% are those who have not and even de-evolved. Humans need an entirely different skill set in the industrial age and less workers are required than in the past. This is why we have wars since we can produce much more than we can consume.
The neo-malthusians that make up the IUCN would like to make most of us extinct, leaving them behind to evolve the new master race.
As an environmental photographer I have seen what is happening around the world.A sad statement for mankind and his greed and gluttony.Too bad its not humans facing this sort of extinction.I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Do you have a site with pics?
This is, for the most part, sad news. But obviously there is hope, as conservation groups have proven. Given more effort from more people, really the downhaul of cannibal lobby groups, resurrection rates would go up. No need in giving up, it's going to get better, just as long as we keep reporting on the endangered species as well.
It's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better at all. And it won't be back to what it was for half a millenia minimally.

Habitat destruction... No mention of the extreme weather in this propaganda piece. Which is directly blamable on the heads of industry who chose to burn fossil fuels rather than exploit water and air motion.
Global warming wins a mention as destroying only the polar caps, no mention of the severe humidity we're experiencing (80+% average for more than a year now)... No mention of the ice age we've begun. Search common dreams for the article "How Global Warming May Cause the Next Ice Age" for info on that. We are observing exactly what the article describes which is the precipitous leap into ice age following a period of greenhouse gas caused warming...
Hunting!? Funny they offer no justification to this baseless claim. People are just hunting rats right out of existence and wombats and koala's oh my...
1/4 of mammals hunted out of existence!? That'd be some heinous shooting spree. People who "hunt" for survival still hunt with arrows or spears. Let me guess, 1/4 of animals will soon be extinct due sport. I'm going hunting wabbit with my machine gun, hehehehehehe.
Disease and the mid summer chill nights living outside maybe? All the mites that have been released to kill the bees to set on the famine maybe? The mites vectoring other diseases maybe? I've seen that lots of places where city's encroach on wilderness the monkeys live alongside the people. Why not the Orangs?
Fungus growing constant in this extreme humidity is the most likely biggest cause. It's extincting bananas and some frogs. That fungus would extinct some mammals too would make sense.
In near 200 thousand years of people hunting animals evidence exists that ONLY very large very threatening species were ever hunted out of existence. The short face bear, the saber tooth tiger, the ten thousand pound terrestrial sloth... 1/4 of mammals means we're now extincting mice and rabbits. I'm 99.9% sure that's not happening by bullet. Holes are pretty easy to dig.
It sure would be convenient for global gun control in this run up to maxfascism. It's also a good psywar propaganda tool against straight shooters.

My post Humans: Dumb Beyond Belief is pertinent to this thread. We, judged by our actions, are moronic. Even the simplest forms of life don't foul their nests.

In regions on Earth our own brothers and sisters are suffering famine and drought yet because of money they are left to suffer and die, even though our governments are spending many billions on wars which only bring death, destruction and further fear and hatred. Something is very wrong and that is those who control society. We have to wake up to this sickness which is maligning our entire species and due to this is causing grave harm to Earth and all who co-habit upon her.
We can change our course by taking control of our own destiny and making the ruling elite obsolete. This will be difficult as they are using as many different ways to keep us subservient to them. They use politicians to create division, fear and unnatural laws to keep us down and allow them to continue ruling over us, they use religion to keep us disconnected from all, create division and hatred, they use media to brainwash us with greed, lies and broadcast fear into our minds, they use money to get us addicted to greed and selfishness as well as bring distress, fear and worry to those who are denied the means of survival or have barely enough to live on (through no fault of their own). All the time they rape Earth for her resources and through the by-products of industry are poisoning the atmosphere and it is all for their own greed and lust for power. If we keep staying asleep or worse silent we might as well accept that we, along with almost everything else we co-habit Earth with will be gone within the next two or three decades.
We can stay unconscious and silent or we can wake-up and stand up and take our destiny into our own hands and rid ourselves and Earth of the sickness which plagues us all, the ruling elite.
It is time for us all to think outside the box and go beyond the matrix which has been created for us to live inside and to realise that we are all one with everything there is and to start living in harmony. We have to cast away the illusions that have been created by the ruling elite and realise that we are strong, clever and able to do anything we put our minds too. We can end all suffering to all our brothers and sisters if we are determined and working together for the good of all and not for the ruling elite. We can help Earth get back in balance and prevent the extinction of species which we co-habit Earth with. We can not rely on the politicians or the political system to do this as they are all controlled by the ruling elite and if you still think otherwise then you are sound asleep and it’s time to open your eyes and use your own mind.
Time to put the past behind us and realise that we are all one and as such we are stronger together than divided and heal all the hurt by working together for the good of all, Earth and all species who co-habit upon her. We have the power inside us all if we just reject the illusions which we live with, take control of our own lives and spread the love.
Let’s not stay stupid but use our intelligence, I know we can.

Check out: "Blessed Unrest", by Paul Hawken.
Good comment. So let's have a discussion about progressive policy toward ecosystems and species. 1.) According to the time/energy that their evolution requires, we place great value in each species. 2.) Some species tend to dominate ecosystems and we value them less because of this, so our tolerance of their exploitation is greater. 3.) If we suppress a predator, e.g. the wolf, to protect our economic pursuits, e.g. cattle, and thereby cause population explosions, e.g. deer, then we have to reign in our idiotic economic pursuits. 4.) our appreciation of the natural world is greatly enhanced by increased exposure to that as children instead of exposure to the capitalist consumption propaganda.
Stupid? Stupid who? I satisfied my iodine need by a chest and abdomens stain of iodine and have been consuming minimally two drops a day since. My thyroid is growing my brain HUGE. I'm scared I might extinct myself by the Bruce Lee disease swollen brain. Anyhow, anyone who wants to email me I'll tell you how simple putting together your own electric facility is. If you stock a few grow lamps, seeds, magnets and wire coil, you can survive the impending nuclear warfare in your basement. Unless the nuke goes off within about 7 miles of your home which is no worry either because you won't feel a thing.

You can see how stupid humanity is as a species is when you look at all the exposure given to the so-called financial crisis. What you have to understand is that money is an illusion, as is the alleged value of different things – value is a concept people have put on an item it is not real but purely an illusion.
Those of us who are still blinded by the lies of the politicians, media, corporate, religious and financial leaders, all of whom are interconnected and controlled by the ruling elite are worried about an illusion which not only holds us back but disconnects us from a fundamental truth about our being – we are all connected to everything there is.
As we are blinded and distracted by the illusions we are allowing parts of our World to become stripped of their resources which is having untold consequences on the whole of the planet.
To get to the resources whole areas are stripped of their natural habitat which are vital to us all. When you take away something as seemingly ordinary as some trees you are in fact not just removing a tree but also in doing so are destroying an entire micro-system, which we are part of. The damage may seem not worrying about but once this pattern is repeated over and over again it becomes a major catastrophe and we are all going suffer for it.
The planet we co-habit with, the Earth is as fragile as any other organism which lives upon her.
We are now facing an extinction of 25% of mammals which we co-habit Earth with. Let us not forget that we are mammals so to face a loss of a quarter of our own phylum is worrying. And if 25% of mammals are at risk of becoming extinct the number of creatures in the other phylum groups is likely to be even higher, we are looking at a possible loss of a third of all species we co-habit with.
You may argue that it is normal for species to become extinct, look at the dinosaurs, but the fact is that humanity is responsible for the impending loss of all these species due to the disconnection that we have allowed to happen by wrongly believing that we are special and something apart to all other life on Earth. We are not.
In our slumber and allowing of the ruling elite to dictate over us, who are in league with the Darkness, and have used many different methods to blind us from the Universal truths, in order to control us, we have lost our connection and by doing so we have allowed our Earth and a lot of species who co-habit upon her to suffer atrociously.
We have spent too much time (and a lot of it unknowingly) serving the ruling elite and falling for their lies that we have never as a species looked after our own species but rather just looked after the ruling elite who have through their allegiance to the Darkness sought to enslave us all and blind us to everything that is real.
The ruling elite have actively used methods such as religion, nation states and politics to divide us. The use of war and threat of ‘terrorist’ violence is used to keep us living in fear. And then there is money and the entire financial system which has instilled greed into us and also more fear. We live in a society which is completely dominated by the concept of money. Nearly everything we do in society revolves around the concept of money, we are told that to acquire wealth is something to be proud of. Money is an illusion it holds no value whatsoever and nothing else does with the exception of life itself.
[as common dreams only allows 1000 words per post the rest of this is in the next comment]
You know what money's worth? Food and a warm place to live. If you're real clever you'll buy seeds and a plot of land near the equator, better sun and rents there. Then you don't have to worry too much about the warmth. But you could still buy magnets and wire coil to build your own electricity turbine and power it with water motion, wind, steam or a heat engine. That way you could live well your whole life for a couple hundred dollars. Nice bunch of words you typed there, windy and mostly meaningless. You must be a politician. Next step toward fascism: get them to accept their stupidity, view the setup as their own fault, accept scarce resources, eat bugs and give us their guns...

Facts and evidence point to us being dumbed down and further facts points strongly to us being distracted by illusions and becoming disconnected from the real and by doing so we are allowing insidious people to destroy our planet for profit. Yes some people do stand up for the environment but as a whole most people are happily glued to the X-Factor and happily believe what they are told without question - this I think you would agree is stupidity. I don't believe that humanity is stupid but rather dumbed down to further the interests of the ruling elite and that it is time for us all to use our intelligence to further all of humanity, Earth and all we co-habit with.
And as for your jumping to conclusions as to my profession let me just say my friend assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups.

The Living Planet Index out earlier this year shows the devastating impact of humanity as biodiversity has plummeted by almost a third in the 35 years to 2005.
The report produced by WWF, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and the Global Footprint Network, says land species have declined by 25 per cent, marine life by 28 per cent, and freshwater species by 29 per cent.
The report (http://www.panda.org/news_facts/publications/living_planet_report/index.cfm) states that the sharp fall is completely unprecedented in terms of human history.... have to go back to the extinction of the dinosaurs to see a decline as rapid as this.
The Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event was 65 million years ago.
Man has had an unprecedented effect on his environment, leading to, among other things, global mass extinction and climate change.
Of course, eating meat is as large a contributor to these events as using non-renewable resources. 1/50th as much land is required for a practicing human herbivore diet as is required for a person practicing a Western style meatarian diet.
Meat-eaters suck.
MEAT is hugely WASTEFUL.
1 pound of beef requires 16 pounds of wheat to produce.
1 pound of beef requires about 3000 gallons of water to produce.
US meat eaters require an average 6 arable acres per person.
World Average 1.2 acres per person.
Vegetarian .6 acres per person.
Vegan .3 acres per person.
If every person on the planet was vegan the worlds arable acres 8b would be enough to sustain 24 billion people. At todays world average diet acreage requirement we've already passed the sustainable population.
8b arable acres/1.2 acres per person=6.67 billion peoples worth of growable soil...

Good post. I've even read that if people would stop eating meat and other flesh foods, they'd be less aggressive, more peaceful and wars would eventually stop. I'd say it's worth a try.
I believe it was Leo Tolstoy who said "Vegetarianism is the taproot of humanitarianism".
Anyone urging to list humans yet?
Wasnt a list like this published 2 years ago?
hunting--for food and medicines.
Hmm--isnt it the wishy washy eco groups that say we need "wise management" and that we need to preserve the amazon so it can be exploited for human value?
Only an anti-human supremacist, pro animal rights(and plant rights) type of philosophy can counter this.
Not the "let's go back to 19th century plough horse farms" romanticism.
Slow food wont work. It needs to be "slowest food." That's strict vegetarianism/veganism.
That's just the ones large enough to be seen. I wonder how long the list is of already extinct lesser life forms that are too small to be bothered with or those that can't be seen with the naked eye.
Don't worry too much about it. Micro life is mass profligate. You almost can't slow them suckers down.

I sincerely hope that George Wanker Bush and Cheesedick Cheney are in that one quarter. Republicans and Democrats too. The Caspian Seal and Tasmnanian Devil don't deserve it but the political ruling class does. I realize the list could be a lot longer but that's a good start.
Perhaps the ruling class will finally take notice of what environmental destruction, extinction of mammals, toxic affluence (and impoverishment of the rest of the world) are doing to the Earth when their mansions are overrun with cockroaches and spiders.
