Impeach President Bush Now, says Dennis Kucinich
One day before the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Rep. Dennis Kucinich is presenting a petition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with 50,000 signatures urging the impeachment of President Bush -- adding to the 100,000 he has already filed.
Calling the Bush administration's military response to 9/11 "errant retributive justice," the Ohio Democrat called for a Commission on Truth and Reconciliation to "compel testimony and gather official documents" on why the Bush administration went to war in Iraq. In advance of a news conference today with grass-roots organizations lobbying Congress on the issue, Kucinich said:
Impeachment has been the first step in our efforts toward truth. The American people were lied to. We went to war based on lies. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. ...
In the face of a destructive war against Iraq, preparations for war against Iran, the initiation of a cold war with Russia, the inevitable destruction of our domestic economy from the extraordinary cost of a great military buildup, and the gutting of civil liberties, the call for impeachment has been the only remedy. Millions of Americans recognize this.
Kucinich's pitch comes one day before the nation mourns the death of 3,000 Americans killed on 9/11, and one day after Democratic Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington endorsed impeachment. McDermott visited Saddam Hussein's Iraq before the war, earning him the nickname "Baghdad Jim." Here's what he said:
For the last two years I've struggled with the issue of whether the House should impeach a sitting president. Next to declaring war, impeachment is the gravest matter the House of Representatives must consider. I fully understand the gut-wrenching consequences such a national debate could precipitate. Yet there is one fact we cannot over look or escape: America cannot regain its moral leadership in the world if America cannot hold its leaders accountable for their actions at home.
With Bush leaving office in about four months, and a presidential election campaign in full swing, no one in Washington seriously expects the impeachment drive to succeed. Pelosi has repeatedly taken the issue off the table, saying voters expect Congress to work on economic issues, not spend its remaining months trying to push Bush from office early.
But David Swanson, co-founder of AfterDowningStreet.org, argued in a press release that impeachment is crucial to possible criminal trials against the president and Vice President Dick Cheney once they leave office.
When Cheney and Bush finally face trial in a criminal court, their first line of defense is likely to be, "We served the American people, whose representatives chose not to impeach us." If on the other hand they are impeached even after having left office, the likelihood of prosecution and of successful prosecution will increase dramatically.

Show AllIs Dennis Kucinich the only member of the United States congress who respects the Constitution?
A longer term, citizen memory is beginning: we are noticing two, or three, stolen elections, we remember the Vietnam fight and the arguments concerning our stay, and the wizard behind the curtain at the DOD - trillion for What?
The Soviet Union is gone.
A bit of an historical memory would/will change many of the members of Congress.
I wonder, if there were more Greens in congress, whould there be more votes to defend the constitution?
Nobody could possibly be as corrupt as either of our two (faced) parties.
It isn't easy being Green but that's what I'll vote for.
I believe, and very strongly, that such an occurance is the only thing that will save this nation from the creeping fascism that overtakes it.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.

The Green Party has officially been calling for impeachment since July 2003.
I ran as a Green in 2002 for Congress. Got 7,500 votes and spent less than $4,000. It was a great experience and the campaign was a refuge for those who couldn't stomach the lunacy of the corporate politicians.
I worked for impeachment from 2003 on. Damn straight defending the Constitution would have been a priority. It's the only oath we demand of members of Congress.
Just to remind folks, every member of Congress took this oath:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."

FYI,
This is the text of the letter I received from my Congressman recently:
"
Thanks for your message in support of impeaching the President, Vice President, or both. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
I have consistently supported efforts to fully investigate the actions of the Bush Administration. Most recently, I joined the sponsor of the resolution, Mr. Kucinich, to refer H. Res. 1258, the resolution to impeach President Bush to the House Committee on the Judiciary with the understanding the committee will begin an aggressive investigation leading to potential hearings. Earlier this year, I signed on to Rep. Wexler's letter requesting impeachment hearings against the Vice President.
However, the administration has consistently refused to cooperate with congressional investigations, including subpoenas and contempt citations. In response, I have voted to hold former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a legally binding subpoena. Even if the current administration continues to stonewall the nation and Congress, I would expect the next administration to be willing to permit independent investigations into the abuses of the Bush Administration. I look forward to a Department of Justice and an independent judiciary that will apply the rule of law to every American equally, even former Presidents and Vice Presidents.
To prevent further destruction by the Bush Administration I signed a letter to the President informing him that if he authorizes a preemptive attack on Iran absent Congressional authorization, I will organize my colleagues in the calling for the immediate impeachment proceedings for violating Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution that states only Congress has the power to "declare war". While I still believe that impeachment cannot pass the Senate, I do think the threat of impeachment should be used to prevent the disastrous consequences of a unilateral strike on Iran.
Thanks again for contacting me. Please keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Rep. Peter DeFazio
Fourth District, OREGON "
Congressman DeFazio is my congressman and I am not happy with this.
Frankly, although I am not a constitutional scholar, I believe the motion to impeach is the first step in the process and that step belongs to Congress itself -- NOT to a committee or a sub-committee. What DeFazio brags about is a delaying technique, a technique the framers of the Constitution deliberately (and successfully) sought to absolutely avoid.
I'll say it again: This elaborate exercise that Peter goes through about his cosponsorship and vote to REFER the matter to the Judiciary Cmte is a figleaf intended to appear like he is doing all he can.
Don't fall for it. Once the motion to impeach gets actually approved, THEN whatever investigations and hearings are felt necessary can take place. In this case, in fact, such investigations are NOT really needed. Most of the grounds for it are already clear and well known.
I just posted the letter for information.
But Yes, I agree. The Democrats are doing too little, too late. They would rather win more seats in the next election than do something about high crimes of the Executive. The system we have now is designed to move so slowly that nothing is accomplished.
When Pelosi took impeachment "off the table", she took the US Constitution off the table so Bush could use it as toilet paper. It's just like Ford's pardon of Nixon. No king would support those who try to remove their soverign - and they all imagine themselves as kings and the citizens as serfs.
I'm glad that DeFazio is doing something, which is more than I can say for alot of other Congressmen. Kucinich and especially Vincent Bugliosi's statements in support of impeachment from July 25th are still riveting. History will hold the United States accountable for this miserable failure of government if nothing is done about the Bush Administration's crimes.
The real reason it's not too late to impeach Bush/Cheney and co. is because it sets a dangerous precedent NOT to impeach them. Bravo, Dennis Kucinich, a real american hero!!! (:
"America cannot regain its moral leadership in the world if America cannot hold its leaders accountable for their actions at home."
Exactly. GWB has never been legally elected President, but he will be a lasting PRECEDENT if his high crimes and misdemeanors are allowed to stand with impunity. Same goes for Cheney, the actual mastermind of the crimes committed by his stupid, selfish puppet.
Thank you Rep. Kucinich. In a better world, YOU would be our Democratic nominee. Thank you for continuing to struggle and speak the truth. Thank you, Rep McDermott, for being on the right side of history.
My Representative, David Price, is a good man with a good record, but has consistantly refused to rise to the greatness of supporting justice rather than political expediency. I say, shame on him. I tell him so regularly.
Have you called YOUR Rep?
Oakknot
I sent a message to my rep, Earl Blumenauer, but it remains to be seen if he will have the moral courage to sign on to the impeachment bill.
Earl Blumenauer is my Rep. too. 10s of thousands of us have told him to impeach, he will not. I did not vote for him in the primaries. I will right in a vote for myself before I will vote for him again. I watched "Mr Smith Goes To Washington" on cable. What are they holding over you Mr. Blumenauer, or are you in someone's pocket? Spineless Bastard, thats what my Congressmen is!
If your representative were "a good man" he wouldn't ignore the obvious. I regard only two of our representatives "good men". Thank you for speaking truth to David Price. Nothing personal.
My rep. is Louis Gohmert-R., Tx. This "man" is the most useless waste of air, food, and water that could possibly exist on the face of this planet. He couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the directions were printeed on the heel.
No he is the only one that has the guts to stand up to those who control the WH. I can see him have an accident and the press will have a field day of lies about his private life.

Start by impeaching Nancy Pelosi, John Conyers, and Harry Reid, who have prevented impeachment since January, 2007.
what a shame this brave man will not be your next president...........he's too morally and ethically intact for the job.
but i hope his 'solitary' campaign comes to fruition.................
Kucinich should worry about his own political party first. I am unimpressed by this way too late effort that is merely a side show at this point, to help get Barack Obama elected. It's great to help tie the DP liberal base down but that's all it is doing now, and not much else.
When John McCain had his rally this last Saturday here in Colorado Springs the entire Democratic Party (minus 2 teenager girls) was MIA. Thirty thousand of the Republican faithful lined up for hours waiting to enter to see their candidates, and not a Democrat in sight! Do the Democratic Party voting liberals think that all they have to do is to stroll out on election day and press some box with a ballot in hand and all will magically be perfectly right in their country? Wrong, wrong, wrong! A thousand times wrong then. You have to be there and let them know how you feel!
The Democratic Party liberals did not show up at the 2 conventions either, preferring to stay at home and watch irrational irreality on TV. You have to confront authority, Liberals, and make your voices known, not sit passively by and let your own DP bigwigs play as dead as you yourselves seem to be.
Where is 'Dennis' when it comes to mobilizations of the people? He's as absent as the rest of them IMO. Amy Goodman presente! Dennis Kucinich, out to lunch... No, I am not being too hard on the guy either.
You are wrong about Kucincih--I have been following him for years. I think he back Obama because he is a Dem. I am not. Kucinch has quoted Goodman many times. He's far from perfect. But, at least he backs getting out of the war(s) (he was actually there to vote against it), single payer helath care, no more nukes, etc.We should be so lucky (and smart) to end up with a Kucincih presidency.
Way too late? Kucinich has been talking impeachment for years and is the only person to bring it to the house floor. Maybe you haven't followed him closely.
I agree that the Dems are complicit in the rise of fascism in the US, but DK does seem, from my perspective, to actually act with integrity.
Dennis Kucinich was the only presidential candidate worthy of my support and vote. He's one of the few in congress to stand up to the criminals in the White House. My rep, Brian Bilbray - R (CA 50th) is a chicken shit republican who would never side with DK on the impeachment issue.
I am next door in Darrell Issa's district. Same story. Republicans water bearers for Team Bush.
This is not a democratic government that has tranparency. There should be no wonder why Bush will not be impeached he has money and power, that is what it is about in the USA nothing else. Morality of a special brand and crime are guaranteed in the bible and this is a fear mongering religious society.
There will be no impeachment for precisely the reason given in the final paragraph, a quote from David Swanson.
On both sides, complicit politicians fear for their own skins.
Agree. The biggest lie that most Americans willingly swallow is that there are two distinct parties that contest each other for dominion.
There is only "The Party". All else is a charade for the benefit of those who believe our shredded Constitution has any relevance or meaning.
With a few individual exceptions, The Party consists of bought cowards who fight amongst themselves only as a means to gain a better position in line for lining their pockets during the following four years.
Those who vote, only enable this travesty.
"One day before the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Rep. Dennis Kucinich is presenting a petition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with 50,000 signatures urging the impeachment of President Bush -- adding to the 100,000 he has already filed."
You might as well take it to the White House and ask The Punk di tutti Punks to impeach himself.

BREAKING NEWS...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7608500.stm
Ron Paul urges third-party vote
Texas Congressman Ron Paul has urged voters to reject Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain and vote for a third-party US candidate instead.
.
well, at least one person with a modicum of common sense...............
Ralph Nader and Ron Paul will appear this afternoon on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.
CNN says the segment will run sometime between 4:15 and 4:40 p.m. EST today.
Hope you get a chance to see it.
F**K! I just caught the end of it! Isnt he on again at 7:00(?) with LouDobbs (of all things--he has to take the media atten. where he can get it!)I couldnt get the video that a friend sent me fro YouTube to work--apaprentl he was ion C-SPAN this AM. I MAY have it on DVR.
I fear Ron Paul may be a racist. I have not paid enought attention to him to actually know.(My ears closed up when I heard "close all fed. prog".) But i know he received money from some White supremecsit groups.
Thanks for the head up! ANY Third Party candidate deserves a listen and a place in the debate!
.
I was flabbergasted at Wolf , he actually had the audacity to say to Nader " since you know you can't win who are you recommending Obama or McCain?" or something like that. ..What nerve... @#$%^^^& ~that's what I say to Wolf. '
Nader looked like he wanted to reach across the table and pull wolf right out of his chair, Paul looked like he couldn't believe what he had just heard...
.
Have you ever contacted Rep. Kucinich with support?
My name is on the petition.
Dems , as a whole, kept saying "Bush is on the way out" and "lets just concentrate on the election". Well, it turns out that Bush can still do alot of damage. He shoidl; AT LEAST be censured, before he gets us into WWIII!(Georgia/Cheney, Nukes to India, bombing Pakistan, Russia moving ships to Venezuela--which is entirely our fault--the CIA should stop trying to assassinate Chavez--at least he won one real election!)
If "impeachment is the most serious thing they can do" as McDermott says, why did they do it over a sexual affairs and a lie about the affair? This is ALOT more serious, folks. I dont see how we can have real change without justice. And, BTW--I dont think anyone is "waiting around for America's moral leaderhsip in the world" anymore. If they ever were.
Impeach, convict and hang for treason in front of their disemboweled base suporters
- then repeat at the Hague for war crimes.
I wrote in Kucinich for the Democratic nominee, and this article is one of many reasons why I still feel I did the right thing.
Impeachment, trial, conviction, then execution. That would be the right kind of "errant retributive justice."

We need to impeach the system that allowed someone like George Bush to get into office. Impeachment of the little wimp would be a great start. But it can't stop with our politicians. It must include their financial supporters, corporate America. And so called journalists for selling out their integrity for an invitation to to be on TV. And our no-balls generals for not standing up to the little wimp and telling him you are not going to sacrifice American lives in a war based on lies. Impeachment? We need a complete overhaul.

GUILT IS NOT THE ISSUE!!! - COURAGE IS THE ISSUE!!!
Impeachment procedures can only help Obama.
I wondered what the Bush/Cheney oily cabal did with all the ENRON crooks.
What sort of Family Values will we see when we Focus on this family?
"Posted at 03:27 PM ET, 09/10/2008 (The Washington Post)
Report: U.S. Oil Program Rife with Conflicts, Favoritism, 'Promiscuity'
Government officials in a program that collects royalties from firms drilling on federal land partied and had sexual relationships with employees of oil and gas companies; accepted lavish gifts including ski trips, sports tickets and golf outings; and steered contracts to favored firms, according to a two-year Interior Department investigation released today.
Investigators said they "discovered a culture of substance abuse and promiscuity" in the Colorado office of the program.
The former director of the program was among those who took gifts, the department's inspector general says in the report. Another 13 people in the office of fewer than 60 people have been recommended for administrative action for showing favoritism and having had personal relationships with energy company employees from 2002 through 2006."
"I wondered what the Bush/Cheney oily cabal did with all the ENRON crooks"
Well for one thing - they let them keep their mansions - bought with with stolen money.
The ENRON Ceo (criminal Ken Lay) died before his appeal - so the judge decided that he was "not guilty" and his family could keep the stuff they bought with the stolen millions.
ENRON was one of the largest corporate contributors to the Bush /Cheney campaign in 2000 (ENRON also gave zillions of $$$ to the democrats).
The plutocracy now controlls every aspect of American life so well that the only way to get rid of them is to do exactly the opposite of George Bush's advice after 9/11..."Go Shopping" In other words: Kill your TV, Buy nothing, unless it's used from a neighbor, or a local craft.
The insurance companies have prevented the United States from having healthcare, The oil and security companies have committed murder. The media is propaganda.
I wish the sheeple were smart enough to have a general strike. If only we had a brain...and a Constitution!
This is just Kucinish throwing a bone to the idiots on Democratic Underground who are too stupid to see through their fake party's corruption.
Democrats are a farce.
Kucinich is a farce. Why would/how could Democrats impeach Bush when they were the ones who aided and abetted his crimes?
I was about to reply to the comment above this one, then discovered that tetti_tatti had already said a lot of what I wanted to say.
At this point, I view Kucinich's role as one to largely distract the progressive movement. While the Obama-Biden campaign and the Congressional Democrats move so far to the right as to be down below the horizon when viewed from any progressive position, it appears to be Kucinich's role to come up with stunts like this to distract and try to assuage the Democratic base.
I do agree with the arguments for impeachment. Even though it would have been much more powerful to do this last year (when Kucinich refused to do this), even now impeachment should indeed occur if we are still a nation of laws.
But the real, practical political effect of this is to serve as a distraction. Instead of people working to elect candidates who would really serve as allies to Kucinich in the next Congress, instead lots of effort and attention goes to signing silly petitions.
Wow, he presented a petition. I'm quite sure Ms. Pelosi threw it in the trashcan. Probably did it right in front of Kucinich (assuming this actually happened in person), instead of even waiting until he had left for her to show her disdain for this.
But the point is, all of this is meaningles. If you really want this, go work to elect Greens to the Congress. Or work to elect an independent like Cindy Sheehan. Or go work to elect someone like McKinney or Nader as President. Or just work to try to get Nader into the debates where he could at least talk about this in front of the nation.
Those might all be things that might move the cause forward. Kucinich and his motions and petitions is just a silly distraction at this point. In fact, Kucinich has been nothing but a distraction and a diversion of resources all along. And that seems to be the role the Democrats have assigned to him.
The Democrats are indeed a farce. And that includes Kucinich until he gets enough sense to leave that party of evil (albeit it microscopically less evil than the Rethugs).

Samson, I have to agree with you on Kucinich leaving the dems. The two major parties are as you well know, one major party with two two different groups of people saying different things but pushing the same agenda (kinda like a giant Hannity and Colmes.)
I can't remember the name this group has given itself, but they formed during the recent vote on the "new" F.I.S.A. law that Obama and so many other democrats caved on and gave immunity to the telecoms for Bu$h's illegal spying on American citizens without a warrant. The group was started by Ron Paul and his backers and is recruiting the democrats, such as Kucinich, Feingold, and the (very)few in the republican party, and some independants and members of current third parties who actually care about the Constitution and object strongly to laws such as the Patriot Acts, Military Commissions Act, John Warner Defense Act, and the new F.I.S.A. Bill. If I can find the link to this groups website, I will post it. (I stored the damn thing somewhere, but my aging mind cannot remember right off hand what the title of this new group/potential new party is. Sorry!
Samson: "I can't remember the name this group has given itself...."
The name it went by during it's recruiting phase was The Liberty Committee. It has recruited over 100,000 members since it launched just a few months ago. Now that they have held their organizing convention and developed a platform, I guess it qualifies as a political party. It's too late for them to be fielding candidates with ballot-line recognition in any state in this year's election, but it puts them in an ideal position to bring national focus on the Third Party concept.
I am impressed with what Ron Paul is doing for the actual Independent and 3rd Party presidential candidates. He, himself, dropped out of his Independent race for President several months ago before he started this organization.
Several CD posters have mentioned the idea of Nader and McKinney teaming up in some way. This is one way that could allow debates to be held that might get a lot of attention. Bob Barr and the candidate for the Constitution Party would also be included. None of these people will ever be allowed in the "Official" Presidential Debates.
MSM television of course won't cover it, CSPAN is only a maybe. But how about a Canadian broadcaster, or BBC or Al Jazeera or ______ . And there is always U-Tube. I'm sure there is international interest.
For a link, try this: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/ I think the link is still active, it was active 10 days ago. From there you can get the direct link and other related links. The one I mention is the only one I've bookmarked.
