Cuomo Administration Denies New Fracked Gas Pipeline in NY Harbor

“This is what real climate action looks like: preventing new fossil fuel infrastructure buildout before it begins.”

WASHINGTON

Last night the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation denied a necessary water quality permit for the construction of the Williams pipeline, which would have carried fracked natural gas from Pennsylvania through New York Harbor. In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter issued the following statement:

"We are thrilled that the Cuomo Administration has seen fit to reject this fracked gas pipeline, which would have threatened the stability of an important ecosystem and further tied the region to a future of dangerous, polluting fossil fuels. This is what real climate action looks like: preventing new fossil fuel infrastructure buildout before it begins.

"This victory came as a result of tireless organizing from a wide, diverse coalition of advocates all focused on stopping new fossil fuel development in the Northeast. After tens of thousands of calls and letters, and dozens of protests aimed at Governor Cuomo, the right decision was made. This is further proof that an organized, mobilized movement of concerned residents can make real change possible."

Food & Water Watch mobilizes regular people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water, and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people's health, communities, and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.
