Gingrich on Palestine: Small Truths In A Big Lie
If Newt had really said what the headlines claimed: “Gingrich Calls Palestinians an ‘Invented’ People,” I would have shrugged and said, So what? Americans are an invented people too. So are British, Chinese, and every other national group. We’ve been teaching that in our college classrooms for twenty years or more as an obvious no-brainer.
But that’s not what Gingrich said. He said “We,” apparently meaning the United States, “have invented the Palestinian people.” Wrong! The Palestinians invented themselves, at least as early as the first Palestinian National Congress in 1919. So it’s the “we,” not the “invented,” that should get headlines and stir angry reactions.
Gingrich got another small piece of the truth right when he said that the Palestinians “are in fact Arabs and are historically part of the Arab people.” the dream of one big pan-Arab nation was a powerful idea before World War I. But it died for all practical purposes after that war when Britain and France divvied up the Middle East between them and started creating new nations.
Those smaller mistakes by Newt and the mass media pale, though, before their big ones. Read the whole transcript.
Newt blandly asserted that the Palestinians -- both the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority and Hamas -- are “a group of terrorists who are firing missiles everyday” because of their “enormous desire to destroy Israel.” In fact, missiles aren’t often fired at Israel any more. And when they are, it’s in response to Israeli provocation.
Fatah has renounced violence and shown itself eager to negotiate a two-state solution once Israel stops eating up Palestinian land with its settlements. And Hamas has consistently offered a long-term truce along with de facto acceptance of a two-state solution.
Yet Gingrich said that negotiating with these Palestinians would be like putting your child into the lion’s cage at the zoo, where your child would surely be eaten. Such distortions are not surprising, coming from a politician desperately courting the extreme far right. Do we really expect honesty from him anyway?
No, the really important story here is what the journalists left out of the story. They seized on that word “invented” and totally ignored Newt’s Big Lie: his outrageous caricature of current Palestinian actions and policies.
Well, the news has to be new. It’s long been out of fashion to try to discredit the Palestinians by calling them an invented people. Even Elliot Abrams, long the U.S. government’s in-house lackey for Israel’s hawks, rejected Gingrich on that point, noting that “there was no Jordan or Syria or Iraq, either, [before World War I] so perhaps he would say they are all invented people as well and also have no right to statehood.”
But to charge the Palestinians with constant rocket attacks aimed at destroying Israel? To ignore the Palestinians’ eagerness for a just two-state solution? That Big Lie is still perfectly acceptable in the U.S. mass media. Indeed it’s the assumption that frames most of the U.S. public conversation about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Maybe it’s eroding very gradually when it comes to Fatah and the Palestinian Authority.
When it comes to Hamas, though, the Big Lie rules virtually unchallenged. Even the New York Times, which claims to be our most respected news source, still tells us that “Hamas rejects Israel’s existence” as if it were an obvious fact that needed no evidence or justification. Never mind that the Times itself published an interview with the head of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, two and a half years ago, in which he clearly stated his acceptance of a two-state solution. For journalists as for politicians, facts too often give way to the power of the Big Lie.
The United States government still has plenty of leverage over the Israeli government, very possibly enough to force the Israelis to stop expanding settlements and start negotiating seriously. Israel’s President Shimon Peres bluntly explained why: "Israel must forge good relations with other countries, primarily the United States, so as to guarantee political support in a time of need." But as long as the Big Lie prevails here, no U.S. president will have the political courage to use that leverage.
One more journalistic gaffe worth noting: The usually reliable Christian Science Monitor headlined, “With an eye toward the Jewish vote, Newt Gingrich disses Palestinians.” The Republican Jewish vote in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina -- the states Gingrich must focus on now -- is miniscule. No serious campaign would give it much attention.
The intense spotlight that most GOP candidates are shining on Israel reflects the power of the Big Lie among their non-Jewish voters, who see Israel as (in Mitt Romney’s words) “the embodiment of the great ideals of our civilization. ... the sole nation that truly shares our values.” if Israel is civilized and under violent attack, its foes are presumably savages. And brown-skinned, to boot. Calling the Palestinians “invented” is a coded way of endorsing and promoting that ethnic prejudice. no candidate has dispensed with code and voiced the prejudice openly -- yet.
Here’s hoping that Newt Gingrich, always eager to boost his reputation as a loose-lipped maverick, will eventually take that step. Then the real root of U.S. Mideast policy -- the persistent bias that allows the Big Lie to pass as ordinary truth -- will be out in the open.

Show Alltalk about an invented state - literally
israel was "created" in 1948 and is populated by jews from all over the place
jews are not a race - they are part of a religion and zionism is not a religion it is a political dogma
but it has been - in a horrific sense - quite a spectacle measuring the demise of the good ship amerika through the prism of watching these right wing nuts in the gop kiss israel's ass
pucker up newt
bend over mitt
The US was invented and created, and populated by WASPs from everywhere WASPs were living.
WASPs and "America" are just as closely associated with a particular religion, and the ethnicity and religion are just as closely associated with various nationalities.
Your post is bigoted.
And then there was the ethnic cleansing part of Gingrich's statement:
"And they had a chance to go many places ..."
So those invented people should just get the hell out of what's left of their homes, businesses, lands and villages and leave already! Go leave in a tent somewhere! Christians too. You're all Arabs. Only European and American Jews who understand democracy should live there, says Newt.
Definitely, Emma----"They had a chance to go many places...." It was the Palestinians' duty to recognize God's People and to simply pack up and get out, abandon their generations of attachments to land, homes and history---I could hardly believe even Newt saying such a thing, with his enormous tin ear wholly unaware of what he'd said or what it meant. And where would Newt The Beaut have picked up such an obscene idea? From the Israeli Right, of course. Their quasi-motto for decades has been that the Palestinians can "leave, be our servants, or die." And this is America's great ally? I'm afraid it is. The bi-nation should be called USrael.....
The real issue is not whether Palestine was a state or a place or a nation or a combination before 1948. They are a nation now and the deserve a state and they are not going to get one because no one cares enough to make Israel or the US create one.
It would appear that there is little difference between people like Newt Gingrich and Bill O'Reilly as demagogues realize that so many Americans are easily swayed by emotion and pejorative rhetoric rather than anything that remotely resembles intelligence and reason.
This jerk of a man was basically run out of Congress the last time. What the hell is he even doing in this race? He's a criminal and has no ethics or morals judging by the way he treats women. He left his wife who was dying of cancer, I think that speaks for itself. Why would you treat this person as a normal human when he stinks so bad I can smell him on the west coast? I am tired of the pot calling the kettle black.
The idea of a Gingrich presidency with his hand on the nuclear botton is a NIGHTMARE.
"They had a chance to go many places." What Gingrich failed to mention is that they would be going "from Palestine."
Newt is the Adolf Hitler of America. He is soooo corrupt, and the epitome of extraordinary evil, that statement might even be an insult to Hitler!
The Tea Party people call Obama Hitler and support Newt. I would call it evil and eviler!
1-4ALL." Instead it is NAKED AIPAC POWER THAT'S BEHIND IT". BINGO!
Well, that deflects any attention that might be directed at the actions by the WASP-dominated US ruling class quite effectively, doesn't it?
Bigoted tripe.
"The Jews" are not "behind" anything.
Chernus is a Zionist?
Maybe in your universe.
He has been saying all along AIPIC promotes lies in this universe but maybe it is the opposite in yours. http://www.salon.com/writer/ira_chernus/
Newt knows it doesn’t matter where he spouts his lies, he will get much the same coverage in a small state as he does in the big ones.
Chernus is no radical, he's a moderate... so his thinking only goes so far. And Newt is a danger to the world. The fact that some from the right deify him, is scary; but they are largely people who read little and understand less. Forces on the Right have essentially made Newt into a "giant" of a presence, and a lot of people in the U.S. have been taught to presume that anyone with celebrity status earned it with talent or genuine credentials.
With that being said, your statement is unfair AND prejudicial:
"Thus Chernus exposes the piece for what it is - pretending that Jews are not the driving force behind the US's Mid-East foreign policy."
Just yesterday CD had an article with statistics that showed that perhaps 30% of Jews in the U.S. support Israel's policies. Also, anyone who makes the complexity of foreign (or domestic) affairs about one cause and one cause only, has their OWN narrow agenda.
It IS fair to say that Israel influences U.S. foreign policy, especially in the Middle East. However, to leave out the MIC and the weapons producers, the Haliburtons, the Homeland Security apparatus and its ideological profiteers, the oil companies, and even otherwise neutral companies that profit from war... is a masterful form of propaganda.
Ray McGovern tends to lean his commentary towards Israel's culpability, too; but at least he realizes that oil interests along with war profiteers both vehemently back (and helped to promote) these unnecessary wars. And don't forget, a lot of politicians confuse leadership with a will to go to war; so they, too, profit from these merciless boondangles.
Anyone who wants to make Israel exclusively responsible for U.S. foreign policy is promoting the scapegoat ideology of former decades. No. This is NOT just about Jews, aXX-hole!
Something you never hear discussed or analyzed by mainstream commentators: Americans have huge hate-ons for certain other cultures, and this has been encouraged as part of state policy. At this point Gingrich feels comfortable, as do many others, to speak as he does because this institionalized hatred is necessary to further an unfolding agenda. Love is sweet and everything, but when it comes to controlling land and holding back people, hate will do wonders...
ZEO: Although I am far from a historian, I think one could reliably find an ethnic (or racial) group that was used as foil in just about every major war. What makes the hatred of Arabs, Muslims, and Hispanic "illegal" aliens so "easy," is the fact that so much of the radio dial has been given to voices like Glenn Beck, Savage, and Rush Limbaugh. These grotesque creeps, LOW on the human evolutionary (spiritual) food chain, salivate at the mere thought of promoting a hatred of "other." Back in the l930's & 1940's, the "smart money" was on blaming the Jews. Today, with the Faux Pearl Harbor constituted by the 911 event, Muslims/Arabs newly qualify. And just in case the countless American blue collars workers out of jobs need someone else to harbor a "hate-on" for, the image of the illegal Hispanic alien, bravely crossing the border to clean their bathrooms or pick their peaches is on hand as a constant visceral reminder.
What if they taught Peace instead...
We need to hate the Arabs in order to feel okay about raping their resources for our SUVs. Israel is serving us well in this regard, with their provocations and propaganda, and our money and weapons, the Arabs are left completely dehumanized as they struggle to fight back. Maybe when the oil runs out there will finally be peace.
This is a bit off topic but is it just me? I can't seem to tell the difference between Gingrich and Slobodan Milosevic. They look identical to me. Every time I see a photo of one, I think of the other. Do other people think they look the same? Has anyone ever seen them together? Is one of them really dead?
Could be true, as in people change their names and reinvent themselves. For example, it is also noted that Newt Gringrich is also Newt McPherson.
As Jesus would say, "I am Palestine" for what you do to the least of these you do to me.
Many Jewish people say they are a race when it suits them, and a religion when it suits them.
I have nothing against Jewish people. My daughter considers herself one. Zionists are a different matter. They're total pigs, and many of them are "Christians." Like good old Newt or any number of pigs we call politicians.
Some think I’m hoping to vote for Ron Paul, but not really. Some many moons ago I posted my real wish: Newt for President! The VP would ideally be Palin or Bachmann. That would be GREAT! Any vestigial thoughts that there is intelligence or justice in our fascist state would be insupportable.
Then we’ll see if that old “never underestimate the stupidity of the Amerikan people” line really is true.
Nah. TPTB wouldn’t chance it. Obama’s the man.
"Many Jewish people say they are a race when it suits them, and a religion when it suits them."
You are making a bigoted statement here. What you are saying is no more true for Jewish people then it is for any other nationality, ethnic group or religion. Many WASPs in this country confuse nationality with ethnicity, by calling themselves "real Americans" and confuse both with religion - "this is a Christian nation."
Virtually all nationalities are associated with a dominant ethnic group, and every ethnic group is associated with a religion.
saying "I have nothing against..." and "some of my best friends (or relatives) are..." does not mitigate your statement.
Sorry! Just sharing what I heard constantly around the Passover table. I guess those exes of mine were not representative when they talked about Judaism as a religion and then went on about what tribe they derived from.
You say "What you are saying is no more true for Jewish people then it is for any other nationality, ethnic group or religion." True, and not so true. What's the difference? Consider that damnable word "homeland."
Thanks for the response.
Serbian nationalism and the Orthodox church are closely interwoven, as are Irish nationalism and Catholicism, to cite just a couple of examples. I already gave the example of WASPs, Christianity, and US nationalism.
Virtually all ethnic groups have a "homeland" mythology.
The other day, TWO A, you mentioned that you always stand up for causes, even when they are unpopular. I appreciate your efforts all across this thread. While I abhor the aggressive, RIGHT WING, martial policies of Israel, I also find it very troubling that some who ought to think in wider terms, appear quite comfortable blaming Israel for U.S. foreign policy. That some who reflect this view have served in uniform is telling. For it displaces onto Israel (as shadow) their own personal responsibility for taking part in the U.S. MIC's machinery of destruction, past and present.
I can't remember if it was MED or someone else who posted a very long list of all the wars or campaigns of aggression launched by America in the past 150 years. More nations than we imagine have been the recipients. To suggest that the entity of Israel, about 60 years old, is behind U.S. aggression presents a short-sightened analysis of a far longer lasting pattern and trajectory. It also sets up a very convenient, and historically compelling, fall guy. Scary stuff.
Thank you for understanding what I am saying, and expanding on it so eloquently.

I do have to compliment your comments! I think a lot of people are also missing out on the point that Newt McPherson aka Newt Gingrich also allegedly said that he would release/pardon Jonathan Jay - it is alleged that this guy was imprisoned here for trading secrets with Israel. Here is something I think you will enjoy reading (don't know the truth behind it, because I'm a firm believer of the saying, "those who control the media, controls the message"). It was an article called "Kashmir vs. West Bank," it was allegedly about how to control the populations of these two residential areas/population, much like the water/electricity...http://hurryupharry.org/2011/08/23/kashmire-vs-west-bank/
This isn't difficult. Jews ARE a race. And also a religion.
"Race" isn't scientific. It is cultural. Yes, that means you will end up with a "race" having different definitions, and also a "race" being a religion. You are falling into the trap of believing that race can somehow be defined scientifically. It cannot.
Considering the latest gallup poll has about 64% or americans thinking congress is doing its worse ever, which is tied for a previous poll on the lobbyists, why think that newt or any other members of congress to be anything less but the psychopathic trash that they are by using their positions to influence the notions they want the M$M dumbstream to believe? Small consolation is that it is most probably the americans whom believe such hogwash. After all, politics in this country have absolutely nothing to do with real issues the people KNOW that should be addressed. All the newt is doing is pandering to the elite that might just allow him to become president and his and the other rethuglicans wannabes absolutely prove that with all their bunkum rhetoric.
Oh, the poll presented by one of the M$M venues:

Thanks for a careful, thoughtful, and accurate response to Gingrich, addressing manageable and knowable political realities relevant to current political debate. Very helpful and concise presentation.
One of the things that is relied on by Gingrich is the Biblical picture of the history of the region. This history is actually more the domain of the larger body of fundamentalist Christians, and those who get their history from hollywood, than the relatively small proportion of literalist Jewish worshipers. Even a close reading of the bible should give rise to powerful questions about the long term or consistent dominance of the Hebrew tribes in this region and gives no evidence of their exclusive habitation. One book that sheds very interesting light on that question of who were the inhabitants of the Levant and where the Bible and Judaism came from Is The Bible Unearthed by Israeli archaeologists Israel Finkelstein an Neil Silberman. They provide powerful archeological evidence that this region has for most of its history been a multicultural mix: Phoenicians, Aramaeans, Canaanites, Philistines, city states, speakers of semitic and non-semitic languages and many others . It also dates the writing of the Bible to the 7th century BCE proposing that David and Solomon were invented legends. I have found it very helpful to do this kind of research to help challenge Biblical literalism.
Jona: Perhaps I am reading too deeply into your post. However, if its subtext is offered to suggest that the Jews in Israel have no claim to that region as their homeland, the exact same thing can be said for all Caucasians living on the American Continents. Sure, there's the difference of a few hundred years, here or there; but the premises are much the same.
Also, when some in this forum foam at the mouth in response to Israeli aggression against their neighbors (a very short-sighted policy decision on the part of Israeli elites, I would add), they seem to slide right over the use of far more force by their own government and its MIC apparatus.
There is something spiritually sound about removing the board from one's own eyes before speaking about what others ought to do. (And please don't bother to invert this comment to suggest that I am applauding Israeli aggression. My advocacy is against military "solutions" in any and EVERY nation. No exception. However, fairness demands that EACH be held to the same standards. Until the U.S. cleans up its own significant Mars rules actions, no one in this forum is in a position to brandish what any other nation does. The fact that the U.S. arms not only Israel, but Egypt and other nations that use these deadly tools on their own people suggests a reason to place more responsibility on the makers and traders in these agencies of massive death! Instead, some scapegoat Israel. VIOLENCE is wrong... but keep in mind that the U.S. in acting as #1 Arms Dealer to the world, is a direct sponsor of much of the violence occuring on this troubled planet)
"However, fairness demands that EACH be held to the same standards. Until the U.S. cleans up its own significant Mars rules actions, no one in this forum is in a position to brandish what any other nation does. "
Ah right. So because the US behaves terribly, it is acceptable for Israel to behave terribly too. Gotcha.
"he fact that the U.S. arms not only Israel, but Egypt and other nations that use these deadly tools on their own people suggests a reason to place more responsibility on the makers and traders in these agencies of massive death! Instead, some scapegoat Israel."
Ah right, so because the US arms the Egyptian military, which uses those arms against Egyptians, it is OK for the US to arm Israel, and for Israel to use those arms against Palestinians.
No, Rfloh. Your inversion of MY langauge reveals neither its meaning nor intention; and I thought I had protected myself against YOUR line of logic by clearly stating that I was NOT advocating for violence in any, way, shape or form. YOU are the one setting up a false tautology. But then, you so often do that, as you are an expert at taking a bit of minutiae out of commentary, and attempting to undermine the crux of an argument on the basis of that dishonest agency.
I am speaking about fairness and a sense of proportion. (You are not.) I am speaking to those persons who want to turn Israel into the projection screen for all of our own nation's sins, and pointing out the self-evident dangers in this line of "reasoning." Your "conclusions" about my commentary are the REVERSE of what I've stated. I get the feeling that you were one of those obnoxious kids on the playground who taunted other children by repeating insidious 2-line rhymes, endlessly, knowing these were not even true.
TWO Americas: I appreciate your compliment, thank you. Do save some butter for holiday cookies, too! (LOL)
Siouxrose...Bravo to you! You have a way of stating things and setting things right, that need to be set right. I would go one step further. I have countless friends, leaders in Rabbis for Human Rights and other similar organizations in Israel who are 1. Zionist 2. Anti-War 3. Pro-Palestinian. 4. Pro-Democratic 5. Anti-Settlement 6. Pro water Rights for Palestinians, etc etc etc ... I think you get the idea. For people who throw the "Zionist" word around easily and casually, I ask you to consider that unless you are ready to make the same demands of hundreds of millions of WASPS and Spanish Descendants in the Americas, due to the the mess they've made and continue to make around the world.....
People use the word "Zionist" as a stand-in for "Jew" so that they can express bigoted ideas and get away with that. It is insidious, cowardly and dishonest.
You certainly are befuddled.
"Jews" don't do anything. Some people who happen to be Jewish support the Israeli government and its policies, some don't. Some people who happen to not be Jewish support the Israeli government and its policies, some don't.
"A Jewish Homeland" - a refuge for people from that group - is not inconsistent with my previous statements.
Yes, Jewish people are more likely to support the concept of Israel than non-Jewish people. So what? Polish people were more likely to support the concept of an independent Poland, Irish people are more likely to support the concept of an independent Ireland. In both of those cases, nationalism is closely associated with Catholicism.
Yet you would have it that these terrible things are only true of Israel and Jewish people. That is bigotry, however you may attempt to disguise it.
All people everywhere "have it both ways at the same time." It is bigotry to project that onto one group.
Claims to land are not the same as the desire of peoples, all peoples and especially persecuted peoples, to have a sanctuary.
Peoples: a body of persons sharing a common religion, culture, language, or inherited condition of life.
The Royalty of Europe and more also needed the Bible to show their “Divine Right of Kings”.
So goes the myth that they are moral decendants of King David (the Stone of Scone) and even the story about Jesus’s Daughter in Europe who kept the line of David going.
Maybe Ira can offer more of what he has learned about these legends.
http://www.simpletoremember.com/articles/a/david_the_king/
We are heading towards another Christmas and Hanukkah here in the United States and around the World. Yet bigotry of all kinds still lurks amongst us.
How about we just think about all of our citizens without jobs. Families without food or homes and children abused or murdered here at home and around the world.
We care and worship in all beliefs and tongues but forget we are all citizens of this planet.
We are the people of this World so how about some peace and tranquility.
SHALOM
Gingrich is just another Stepford Candidate - completely compliant to the Zionist Bank.
Are you you of your mind? Jewish people had a right of existence in northern Europe?
Unbelievable.
Non-German people do not have a full right of existence in Germany today. German ethnics whose families have not lived there for hundreds of years have automatic full rights.
"Race" is very easy to determine, You look at someone and you can tell straight away their "race". The fact is that there aren't that many "races" to choose from.
Most immigrants into Israel, particularly, the illegal ones living in the occupied Palestinian territories, look like Europeans to me, therefore as far as I am concerned they are of European origin and thus Europeans. Just as the "white" people living in the US are ultimately of European origin.
The same rule applies to Black people living in the US, you look at them and know immediately that their origins lie in Africa.
Same thing for Asians, etc., etc.you look at them and they have distinguishing features which determine their race.
It's not a difficult process
Judaism is a religion not a race, just as Zionism is a political movement, not religion.
You are "seeing" things that do not exist, and the perception framework you are using is racist and bigoted.
This is one of the most racist posts I have ever read here.
How does one differentiate from a zionist and a jew of judaism whom has to live under the rule of the zionist? The jew has torture marks on them and zionist have blood on their hands?
"The United States government still has plenty of leverage over the Israeli government, very possibly enough to force the Israelis to stop expanding settlements and start negotiating seriously."
Now there's a Big Lie.
