Life Aboard an International Activist Ship
There is nothing easy about planning or conducting an international action, especially with moving parts called ships! Yet, activists on board keep their spirits afloat!
After delays caused by damaged propellers and broken steering mechanisms, the Gaza Freedom Flotilla now reduced to seven ships is heading for Gaza.
Yesterday, May 29, 2010, in a major confrontation, the Greek Cypriot government, under substantial pressure from the Israeli government, refused to allow members of the Irish and Scottish Parliament, and other dignitaries, board Challenger 1 that would bring them to the flotilla waiting some 50 miles from Cyprus. The group travelled to the Turkish Cypriot side of the island and boarded Challenger 1, whose steering had been repaired.
Despite delays and damaged ships, spirit on board the ships is high, particularly on board the Challenger 1 that arrived in the flotilla this morning at 1:30am carrying German members of Parliament, Belgians, Irish and UK citizens, some of whom have been on the three-day odyssey from Crete to Cyprus and now to the flotilla.
In the 36 hours I’ve been on board the 600-passenger Turkish ship, life has developed into a routine of sleeping, eating, watching the horizon. Virtually everyone is sleep-deprived. All of the passengers are activists in their home countries. They have been fundraising, speaking and travelling for months and years for the plight of the Palestinians. They are seldom without email, computers, mobile calls. Yet, on board the ship, there is only expensive satellite phone service, if you brought your own sat phone, and satellite internet service on the ship is only for journalists to file their stories about the flotilla.
So, for the first time in many months, very active people have extra time on their hands. Time for lengthy conversations with activists from the other 50 countries, time for interviews with the considerable media and time for a well-needed nap on the floor of the deck or in one of the passenger lounges.
The Mava Marmara is a day passenger ferry with no cabins or private areas. About ninety percent of the passengers come from Muslim countries, mostly Arab-Muslim, but substantial delegations from Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country and from Malaysia. In deference to cultural norms, one lounge has been turned into a women’s only lounge, where women eat, sleep and hold conversations on humanitarian programs, religion and a variety of other topics, as women are wont to do. Women have free run of the ship and participate in all the activities of the ship, but do have a “refuge” from the activity of the ship.
Meals on board an activist ship rather than a cruise liner are basic, but very good. Hot tea and Nescafe are available 24 hours a day as is powdered soups. Breakfast is tomatoes, feta cheese, bread, honey. Lunch and dinner is from cans—the choices are beef and potatoes, beans and rice stuffed peppers. Apples and oranges are available during the day. Snacks of nuts, bread and muffins. Last night, we had our first hot meal. The IHH staff cooked a meal of grilled meat kabobs, with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.
Conversations automatically turn to Gaza.
Those of us who have been in Gaza, particularly since the Israeli 22 day attack over one year and five months ago that killed 1440, wounded 5,000 and left 50,000 homeless, describe what we saw—the destroyed buildings, lives turned upside down and yet an incredible spirit of the Palestinians to survive the horrific effects of the Israeli attack and long term brutal effects of the three year siege that has made Gaza an “open-air prison.”
Last night, all the passengers on the ship gathered to hear from the leaders of the various groups that had sent materials and delegations. Turkey, Greece, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Scotland, Ireland all gave spirited talks about why they have worked so hard to be here.
I’ve just been told that we are going to transfer 4 of us whom have been on the Marmara onto the Challenger 1 so 4 on that boat will be able to come on the big ship.
So, off I go to back to the small boat and then off to Gaza we go, I hope!

Under what authority does Israel claim rights to the waters off the coast of Gaza? Doesn't maritime law recognize every country's right to claim ownership of and control of the sea out to a 12 mile limit, with some countries insisting on more, but never claiming rights over waters adjacent to other countries? Just exactly what would Israel require of the Palestinians if the latter were to state willingness to follow any directive that would result in peace? I believe the answer is, "Die!"
They claim the waters as theirs by right because it home to a massive natural gas field.
This the same rationale used by the US to claim Iraq.
That's incorrect: they claim the right to do whatever they want because THEY are Israel and nobody is, and god said they can do that. No gas is needed; it's like the little girl who told me, when I was 8, that I had to let her on the swing because her daddy owned the park.
The explanation is really quite simple and perfectly legal. For confirmation, you only need to visit the web site of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs at http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA
"In accordance with the authority granted to the State of Israel, the Minister of Defense issued warrants that prohibit the entrance of the vessels to Gaza."
The source of that authority is a bit vague, but one assumes that it comes directly from the same divine real estate agent that handles land claims for the "chosen people" according to the book they wrote on the subject.
Good luck to you all and may peace be with you.

You win whatever happens, whether you get through or are stopped.Like Gandhi's Salt March almost eighty years ago, yours will be the victory of truth and non violence. After this the Israeli Govt would have lost their moral legitimacy in the eyes of the world.
May the hopes of all freedom loving people guide you like protecting winds to a safe harbour!
Keep track of the flotilla's progress to Gaza today:
- Live video stream from one of the boats (If Israel attacks the flotilla, barring electronic jamming devices, it will be broadcasted live):
http://www.ihh.org.tr/canliyayin/en
- Continuous updates on the flotilla and a Mediterranean map with GPS locations that track the flotilla as it heads to Gaza.
http://gazafreedommarch.org/cms/en/flotilla.aspx
- Another site that is providing constant updates including videos.
http://witnessgaza.com/
Live stream was offline, but is now back online.
- (7:30 pm CDT) The IDF has already contacted at least one of the boats in the flotilla and approached them and seems to be shadowing the flotilla.
The Israelis, under international maritime law, have no right to Gazan Waters, even the 12 mile limit. God speed.
Godspeed.
The logos of your own God, Israel: " Let there be light."
Shine on activists!
As there have been many holocausts in the history of the world: there is no reason to honor yours, Israel, if you insist insist on starting another.
May the flotilla arrive safely at its destination.
Why can't UN forces be made to accompany such international expeditions, which are designed to break an illegal blockade? Why doesn't the UN suspend or expel Israel or otherwise penalize it for non-compliance with its resolutions and for its violations of human rights?
(Well, we know why -- the US, the UK, France, would veto any such move -- but it still behooves us all to ask these questions really loudly.)
To all the saviours of Gaza: May your will remain iron-clad and your irrepressible thirst for justice nourish you in the challenging days ahead. May the God of all beings strengthen you through calm and turbulent waters and deliver you in peace to your destination.
Your actions are a beacon to the world and a clear sign of hope to the desparate citizens of Gaza.
With admiration,

May we be moved to drop ARROGANCE and pray from the bottoms of our hearts!!!
> The group travelled to the Turkish Cypriot side of the island and boarded

In 1974, Turkey invaded the island of cyprus, taking control of %37 of the island, an area comparable in size to that of the west bank. 180,000 Greek Cypriots were evicted from their homes by the Turkish forces.
In 1983, Turkey declared that the north part of Cyprus, under its control, is an independent state. Only Turkey recognizes this state.
Since then 150,000 Turkish settlers have colonized the northern part.
I wonder how and why Ann Wright and her group feel so well about the help from Turkish Cyprus, as well as the massive involvement of Turkey in the Flotilla.
The Israelis gathered for Gaza to destroy it.
Gazans gathered together to reveal an index finger for Israel.
International activists gathered together to preserve and nurture Gaza's right to extend that finger.
Ships were gathered to carry activists and supplies to open a door to systematic genocide of Palestinians by Israel.
Will the hearts of the world be gathered to cheer or to moan the courage of these few heros who would comfort Gazan heros?
The US gathered weapons, the Zionists gathered troops and Palestinians gathered death and destrution.Tony
> Gazans gathered together to reveal an index finger for Israel.
> International activists gathered together to preserve and nurture Gaza's
> right to extend that finger.
This sums up nicely what the Flotilla is all about.
Yes, it really is very "provocative" as Israel's official publicity calls it. They should be ashamed of themselves. Cluster bombs and phosphorus shells are much more appropriate ways to make one's points in and about Gaza.
Face it. Israel dug itself into a no-win situation and appears likely to dig the hole even deeper. If so, even its bought and paid for U.S. congresscritters may have a problem handling all the fallout from this fiasco -- assuming Americans hear anything at all about it, that is.
To Ann Wright and the hundreds of activists: Respect Respect Respect. You are all true WORLD leaders for peace and humanity.
May this (hopefully)realistic scenario unfold: Israel confiscates the ships and cargo. You are treated humanely in detention in Ashdod. International pressure humiliates Israel into delivering the cargo to Gaza and into a speedy and safe release for all of you, so that you can train hundreds more to do the same.
Stardust: every holocaust, every atom bomb, every environmental disaster should be honored...so that we stupid humans evolve to honor ourselves. Our painful pasts, our painful present and (if we act like adults) perhaps our more enlightened future.
OURS...not yours, not theirs.......get what I mean?
SHALOM SALAAM PEACE
Meanwhile, Netanyahu is in Canada (Israel's current best friend): addressed a friends of Israel rally Sunday, will meet with prime minister Harper (aka Herpes). CBC TV is running an interview with him tonight (Sunday), with Peter Mansbridge the anchor of the National news.
George Galloway, British MP, was refused entry to Canada for supporting humanitarian aid to Gaza last year, but the Gaza blitzkriegfuhrer gets a full statesman's welcome.
oh canada, how pathetic.
Canada runs on Loonies
Turkish TV is reporting that Israel has attacked ships of the flotilla in international waters. On one ship, the Mavi Marmara, it is reported that 2 are dead and 20 injured.
Heard over live feed from the Mavi Marmara via Turkish TV: "We have critically injured people here. We need help. Do not fire on us. We are civilians."

Also another link to see live video of Israel warships. Also see my links below regarding following the flotilla.

Thanks. Mostly Turkish so far. Other Eastern media coverage is only beginning to catch up. The question now, of course, is whether there will be any significant coverage by the Western media and, if so, whether it will include any of the "piracy on the high seas" aspects.
The BBC has been fairly quick off the mark with an item that actually quotes Hamas at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/middle_east/10195838.stm
__
The Palestinian movement Hamas says the Israeli navy has intercepted a flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza strip.
Hamas says the interception took place in international waters, more than 150km (90 miles) off the coast of Gaza.
__
Correction to my first post. Before it was cut off, the live feed actually reported: "We have 3 people killed."
Zionist fucking pigs! Killing innocent people trying to help others who are suffering.
If the vessels were attacked with casualties, it is an act of piracy and murder pure and simple. Every country with nationals on that ferry should sever all diplomatic relations with the Zionist entity. No more visa's for Israeli's. Lets see how they like being isolated in a little prison on the Med. This is beyond an outrage. They have no right to interfere with the vessels but even if they did, the passengers are unarmed human rights activists. Send immigration police on board and insist the vessel be redirected, you don't land commandos on the deck and start shooting people. What ever moral legitimacy Israel may have had was lost today. It can't even pretend to be a country anymore it's just exposed itself for the whole world to see as nothing but a war crime.
HAIFA, Israel — Israeli warships attacked at least one of the six ships carrying pro-Palestinian activists and aid for blockaded Gaza, killing at least two and wounding an unknown number of people on board, an Arabic satellite service and a Turkish TV network reported early Monday. -HuffPost
My congressman and both senators are on record as supporting these Israeli atrocities, I'll NEVER vote for any of them again!!! Is our Commander-In-Chief going to kiss the ass of the Israeli King of Pirates or Lynch him on the lawn? I think our Peace Prize winner will support these bloody pirates.
PS: PressTV reports 20 murdered and more than 50 maimed.
Turkey has summoned the Israeli ambassador to the country over a deadly strike by Israeli navy on a Turkish-sponsored humanitarian Gaza aid convoy.
This is a High Seas Massacre!
Latest reports are that 10 killed and over 30 wounded. Israel is towing the ship to Haifa and barring all newspaper reporters from the docks where it will be interred.
The attacked ship was a TURKISH vessel in International waters, making this an act of war against Turkey and an act of High seas piracy.
The IDF claims it acted in self defense as civilians on the vessel were armed with sticks and knives.
Netanyahu should be arrested before he leaves Canada for the thug that he is. This is an act terror and illegal under any and all international laws.
No doubt the Zionsts, as In 1948 . 1956 < and 1967 (each a war where THEY initiated hostilities) will claim "self defense" with endless tales of how Israel once agin the victim of Anti Semitism.
Quite predictably, the Gaza Freedom March site* reports that the incident is already being spun in tweets describing the flotilla as "provocation", and that IDF commandos were attacked by "peace activists" wielding axes and knives.
You know, an ambush by terroristic peace activists.
(The ironic quotes around "peace activists" is theirs, not mine.)
Stay tuned for the Hasbara Brigade deploying here in force with such patently preposterous ultra-righteous mendacity as CD begins filling up with articles about this atrocity.
It's tragic and deplorable.

Zionist Israel has no more right to exist than Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, Napoleonic France, or any other such murderous, terrorist regime. Does the Mafia have a right to exist? Does Al Qaeda have a right to exist?
These are war crimes and crimes against humanity.
UNGA Resolution 242 was never ratified by the UNSC.
The 'state' of Israel has always been illegal.
Eating utensils and courage against a mindset for murder;they had many options and made a choice for murder and maim.Yea,what if you a gain Gaza, persecute a palestinian, murder on the open sea and lose thy Soul;what have you gained?Ye have been found wanting.Tony
I'm just now listening to Danny Ayalon, Israeli deputy FM, (live on http://www.presstv.ir/llnw/ ) and it's incredible the lies he is spewing out. These Israeli officials are fanatics and gangsters.
The one bottom line is, at the *best* interpretation for Israel, this was piracy, a massacre, and kidnapping, in international waters, and a blatant violation of law.
The other bottom line is that the US empire will continue to support Israel regardless of what they do. First the US empire will fall, then Israel will fall. It will take some time, and much misery until it happens, but it's inevitable.

** Up to 16 killed as Israeli forces storm aid convoy **
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/05/31/2914131.htm
----------
Israel's defence force says at least 10 people were killed when commandos stormed a convoy of six ships carrying aid to Gaza.
----------
----------
Israel denies there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying food, medicine and medical equipment are allowed in regularly.
It says the restrictions are necessary to prevent weapons and materials that could be used to make them from reaching Hamas.
The European Union has called for an inquiry into the deaths aboard the Gaza aid ships.
----------
The videos taken by the passengers clearly show a large number of armed passengers and at least one passenger viciously beating an Israeli while trying to take his gun away. The passengers started the violence, at least from that video. Oh and the press mostly has edited out that part.
So yes, they were armed, and yes, they attacked the Israelis, and yes, the Israelis opened fire when their lives were put in danger, making it self-defense. Just remember these facts.
What video would that be?
I have been following this all night, including videos when first released, and saw no such footage. But isn't it convenient for you have to say you have somehow seen things that has mysteriously disappeared?
In any case, it doesn't matter; these were civilians attacked in international waters in clear violation of international law, and people would have had the right to defend themselves against piracy. The FACTS are the well armed Israelis illegally invaded the ship!
Sorry -- there is no way this can be spun as 'poor Israeli victims" -- they were a a large armed military force which attacked civilians on a relief mission to people under an illegal and unhuman siege.
The ships were in international waters, which makes the Israeli an international crime; the sea off the coast of Gaza is not Israeli, no Israeli jurisdiction there. So, maybe it wasn't wise of the people on the ship to defend themselves, considering the over-kill Israel likes to use against it's opponents, but they were in their right to do so. Only liars and fools still defend the Jewish state of Israel with it's record of human rights and it's contempt for UN-resolutions. But Western diplomacy and politics will find a way to put the blame were it shouldn't be and sweep the rest of this action under the carpet.
The facts are that this Turkish passenger ship was sailing in international waters.
The passengers have every right and duty to repel masked pirates and kidnappers.
This is a case for the ICC or the UNSC and/or a declatation of war.
Since there were deaths involved with this crime all the Israeli attacking forces
and their associates are liable for murder charges. Please no more Jew Lies!
"Jews" come in many shapes, sizes, and political beliefs. I would not lump all Jews into the class of murderous idiots who are doing these acts. Many "Jews" have fought for progressive values we all cherish, let's just focus our attention on the mindless subset that pulled this stunt.
There were no weapoms on the ships. Where did you get this information? This is a humanitarian effort and not military. The source of your information should be investigated. It is a sad commentary you leave on this site
Your stupidity is sickening. If someone enters my house illegally with armed force I am entitled to defend myself with whatever implements I can find. The attacker cannot claim self defence while shooting me dead.
The ship was in international waters and the Israelis had no right to board the ship.
This sounds just like one of those bigots who declares "I didn't really 'rape' her, she was just asking for it, she made me do it"
It never ceases to amaze me what mental contortions these people will perform in defending the indefensible
So, dumbass, you believe that the flotilla participants control what video and photographic evidence is shown? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the flotilla participants seized, along with their possessions--including video and still cameras? So what do you think the Israeli's are going to show? Their initial assault, or do you think they'll cherry-pick footage for something that makes their actions seem justified. Your ignorance is breathtaking.
Yesterday I had wished God speed to this brave band of altruists. They were sailing the seas with magnificent courage to bring succour to those who were groaning under prolonged hardship and repression.Though the world is aware of how vicious and rabid the Israelis have become,I did not anticipate this massacre.
Israel, your days are numbered. An indignant world will curse you and act against you,you will be abused and isolated in public forums, good people will turn their faces away from you in embarrassment when you are near. And if anti Semitism once again diminishes you ,you know who is to blame.
I am also worried that you will somehow or the other cause the next World War.Steps must be taken to prevent you from causing more mischief.
The story has not yet gotten very wide circulation in the US. I'm shocked, SHOCKED! The US response to this will confirm what we've known for a long time: Zionists control our foreign policy, and our press. IF we manage to get this discussed politically, it will be framed as a group of anarchists assaulting Israel. Seriously.
Cicero: "Freedom is participation in power."
I googled Google's text only news just to see what was up this AM and the Israeli navy in international waters had ordered commandos to storm a ship of peaceful activists where they killed 16 to 20 of them with live ammunition. This is a clear-cut case of Israeli State-sponsored terrorism. The activists were part of a flotilla preparing to run the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza to provide much needed medicine, food and other supplies.
The U.S. and Israel are now acting completely outside international law in these State-sponsored terror wars and armed ghetto-izations when the U.S. was the nation most responsible for creating international law after WWII. Time to cut Israel loose from our annual $3 Billion dollar handout. When the second economic collapse comes later this year or early next year I hope Israel will face our existential budget ax.
This massacre surprises even me, one of those people who has never believed Israel occupied the moral high ground, which of course makes me an "anti-semite". Even I thought the Israelis would show more restraint than this(I wasn't surprised at all by Israel's attack on Gaza last year, since I had long anticipated that). My heart goes out to the victims of this massacre and their families. Let's hope those responsible are punished for their crimes.
I honestly do not know what this will lead to as far as Israel's foreign relations go, but it will almost certainly have negative consequences for Israel. In the very least, Turkey may either sever all ties or at worst retaliate(I'm no fan of Turkey, but they do have the right to defend themselves, right?). This won't do anything to Israel's sacred relationship with the U.S or even most of the EU I believe. This tragic incident is Rachel Corrie x 1000, so it will be so much harder to bury it or twist it. In case you forgot who Rachel Corrie is, to many militant Zionists she's sort of like Hitler - do your own research on her background though. This pro-Palestinian flotilla of course included many such little "Hitlers", including, paradoxically a brave Holocaust survivor.
Hopefully it will be a lot harder for Israel to play the victim card from now on, even though the Israeli/Palestinian kill ratio always suggested otherwise. Sure, they can play the victim, but this will increasingly fall on deaf ears.
Mucha Gracias Ann Wright, I have met you and know your heart. My prayers and love to all of you...Israel, all eyes are on you and in God's eye this maybe a turning point in your behavior towards Gaza and your Nuclear Weapons...

How long before news of this incident is suppressed?
