The Audacity of the Free Gaza Flotilla
Breaking the Israeli Siege of Gaza May Lead to an Attack at Sea, Detention Camps and Deportation
By the time you read this, we will be on the high seas of the Mediterranean (we hope the seas will not be too high).
Our two U.S. flagged Free Gaza boats, will join two other passenger ships, a 600 passenger ship from Turkey sponsored by the Turkish humanitarian organization, Insani Yardim Vakfi (IHH) and a 50 passenger ship from Athens sponsored by the European Campaign Against the Siege and the Greek/Swedish Ships to Gaza campaign, to sail to the shores of Gaza to break the Israeli naval blockade of the 1.5 million citizens in Gaza.
Four cargo ships from Ireland, Greece, Algeria and Turkey, will carry a total of 10,000 tons or 2 million pounds of construction materials for the housing of 50,000 made homeless during the 22 day Israeli attack on Gaza that killed 1440 Palestinians and wounded 5,000.
Many of us would like to see our boat renamed "The Audacity of Hope" as that is what we want to see from the Obama administration-- courage to challenge the Israeli government on the siege of Gaza. It would be a really brave, bold move as every U.S. presidential administration since the formation of the State of Israeli in 1948 has blindly given free-rein to Israel in whatever actions it wishes to undertake no matter if the actions are a violation of international law. The carte blanche given to Israel by the United States has been dangerous for Israel's national security as well as for the national security of the United States.
Probable reaction of Israeli Navy Ships-Bow shots, ramming or boarding
In less than 48 hours, the Israeli Navy will probably fire U.S. made ammunition and rockets in international waters over the bows of two U.S. flagged boats and one Greek boat with U.S. citizens aboard as well as citizens from 13 other countries and over the bows of the Turkish 600 passenger ship.
Ironically, on one passenger ship will be Joe Meaders, a U.S. citizen who is a survivor of the Israeli air and naval attack on a United States Navy ship, the USS Liberty, in 1967 killed 34 U.S. sailors and wounded 173. The Israeli government has never acknowledged, much less apologized for, the deaths of these sailors, nor the destruction of the USS Liberty.
According to Israeli media, the Israeli military is preparing for our arrival off the shores of Gaza. The Israeli navy has been practicing its plan for preventing us from docking in Gaza, a plan that probably includes demanding by radio that the ships change course away from Gaza, firing weapons in front of the ships, ramming the ships and sending well-armed boarding parties onto the ships.
Israelis prepare a detention camp
As our 8 ship flotilla prepares to depart Greece and Turkey to break the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza, the Israeli military is preparing a detention camp for the flotilla's 700 delegates from 20 countries who are passengers on four of the ships.
Those passengers include Hedy Epstein, an 85 year old holocaust survivor, Parliamentarians from Germany and Ireland, two former diplomats from the United States, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, authors, journalists, activists, businesspersons and clergy.
Additionally, the military has identified a warehouse in the Ashelod area, just over Gaza's northern border that will be used to detain the 700 passengers on the 8 ships.
Taking a page from the New York City police who put over 1500 persons into a filthy, unclean warehouse on a pier in New York City during the 2004 Republican convention, the Israeli government no doubt will make the surroundings as difficult as possible for us.
The Israeli government has extensive experience in warehousing dissent, as over 10,000 Palestinians are in Israeli jails and prisons, including juveniles who are arrested regularly in nighttime raids in villages of the West Bank.
20 passengers on the May, 2009 Free Gaza boat trying to break the siege were imprisoned for 10 days before they were deported from Israel. They included Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.
Wish us luck as we challenge the Israeli, Egyptian, European Union and United State's unlawful siege and collective punishment of 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza!
What will you do to help break the siege of Gaza?

Ann Wright,
I have followed your work for some time. I admire and respect your efforts and honesty. I wish you all the luck, though it isn't really luck that you need. What is most needed at this point, is a law abiding world that is willing to put a belligerent, arrogant and murderous nation in its place. Israel should be treated as the pariah state that it is, and their citizens should be banned from traveling to civilized nations until their government begins to act humanlike. Unless of course, we wish to stoop to Israel's level and use collective punishment, illegal detentions, assassination, white phosphorous, torture, economic strangulation and apartheid. Does despising Israel's policies, and wanting their warmongering politicians to be hung along side their complicit U.S. counterparts qualify one as antisemetic? If Obama had balls and a modicum of integrity, he would make it clear that the first Israeli ship that fired warning shots would be sunk within minutes. Do Americans need a refresher course on the Liberty? Fuck Israel.
Abolition of apartheid is PRO-ISRAEL.
Abolition of apartheid is PRO-ISRAEL.
What brave souls you all are. My heart and prayers are with you.
Godspeed! Sail on oh ship of peace!
More than luck, Ann, I say "God bless.!
The spectacle in today's news of Rahm Emanuel, right-wing Zionism's representative in the White House, veteran of the IDF and the son of an Israeli terrorist, having "anti-semite" screamed at him as he walked with his family through Jerusalem demonstrates the level of lunacy that has been reached in our middle-eastern "dependency".

I hope my humble words will reach those great saintly souls whose conscience is lively shining out like full moon light and whose great compassion and loving-kindness have urged them to sacrifice their jobs, times, money, personal families, and now their own lives on this noble mission Flottila to save vast number of sufferred people in Gaza, that not just me but millions of others pray and wish all of you more well, safety, courage, and determination to overcome MARAs.
In Buddhism, such are truely noble people and are called Boddhisattvas.
May all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, Protectors in the ten directions bless all of you on this noble mission.
"In Buddhism, such are truely noble people and are called Boddhisattvas."
That is utter nonsense.
Dear Lily_otv:
First, thank you for scolding me politely (not harshly, at least that's how I perceive it).
Seconds, what I wrote came from my sincere goodwill --my consciense. It may make sense, make some sense to others or may not make sense to some like you. Sense or nonsense it's just a matter of personal perception. In this particular case it makes "utter nonsense" to you and I am very sorry that my sincere words may have disturbed you.
May you be happy all the times and forgive me for the way I perceive thing (it doesn't hurt any beings, does it?).
I appreciate your sentiment from your heart.
I have difficulty with your attribution to Buddhism and the understanding of Boddhisattvas.
In my experience, the actions of this flotilla would be contrary to Buddhist beliefs.
Lily,
"In my experience, the actions of this flotilla would be contrary to Buddhist beliefs." wrote Lily.
Lily, you're kidding, aren't you?
if not, honestly, may I ask you this:
1. Are you a Buddhist/Buddhist practioner?
2. What are Buddhist's beliefs, would you please explain it from your own view or from what you have learned (if any)?
Looking forward to hearing your reply, and thank you for replying my comments.
P/S: I apologize everyone for being off the topic with Lily a little bit. Thanks.
It's called Buddhist Ethics.
According to Buddhist teachings, the ethical and moral principles are governed by examining whether a certain action, whether connected to body or speech is likely to be harmful to one's self or to others and thereby avoiding any actions which are likely to be harmful.
The proposed actions of the group, mentioned in this article, puts at risk, all those involved. This is why I consider their actions contrary to Buddhist teachings.
The Buddha said, "Hatreds never cease by hatred in this world; through love alone they cease. This is an eternal law."
"Anger is a poison and an obstacle to enlightenment." - Buddha
1. Thank you for spending the time replying to my two questions above. Making sense or not making sense I'm going to leave it to readers to reflect, and stop going astray off the spirit of the above article.
2. True compassion, true loving-kindness is just like magnet and iron. They respond spontaneously and naturally. Look at Mother Teresa, a Catholic nun. People can call whatever they like, but for me and true buddhist practioners, we all bow low to her and venerate her call her as one of Earth's greatest boddisattvas of modern time.
3. If one cannot preserve and love the purity of one's own mind, how can one obtain true love, let alone ever shed love/kindness to others, may I wonder?
4. It takes honesty, sincerity, loving-kindness toward all beings in order to attain enlightenment. There is no short-cut/self-interpretation/manipulation in the Buddha's Teachings.
It is Buddha's Birthday today April 15, 2010 Lunar calendar (May 28, 2010)
May All Buddhas, Bodisattvas, Protectors in all the ten direction bless all the wonderfull Bodhisattvas on the 9 Flottila ships heading to Gaza safely, and protect them and the suffered people of Gaza from MARAs and harms.
May all beings be happy.
Lily says: "That is utter nonsense."
I say: "Lily utters nonsense."
Ann Wright and the 700 others on these ships are SO courageous. As I sit here in front of my computer, doing nothing but posting pithy messages on CD---reading about these people---I feel the waste and the meaninglessness of my life. My inaction amounts to collaboration. I am part of the problem. How can enlightened Americans reap all the rewards of a bloody empire---going on with their lives like it's nothing?
Most of the world is living on less than $2 a day!
While we consume and live our lives of luxury, the world burns and dies from our waste and inaction.

Anti-Semitic terrorists!
But don't worry. Poor, brave, victimized, little Israel will emerge, as always, triumphant over its nefarious enemies and would-be oppressors, to the deafening applause of its U.S. congresscritter chorus.
Go for it. They ( Israelis ) dare not confront this international Armada without arousing international damnation on themselves. The Arab peoples have been wrongly portrayed in the West for long enough, and have suffered enough as a result. God be with you all, whoever your God is or is not.
Don't count on Israel not daring confrontation. They revel in international condemnation. In fact, they often appears quite uneasy in its absence and (not unlike the U.S. in some ways) actually seem driven to create more global hated for themselves. Here's a brief excerpt from a recent article entitled "Hallalujah, the Whole World is Against Us!" written by a Jewish author, Uri Avnery, on that subject:
__
I have a theory which would explain everything.
For many centuries, the Jews were persecuted in Christian Europe. Anti-Semitism turned their life into hell. They fell victim to pogroms, mass expulsions, confinement in ghettos, oppressive edicts and discriminatory laws. In the course of time, they developed mental and practical defense mechanisms, methods of survival and routes of escape.
Since the Holocaust, the situation has changed radically. In the US the Jews now live in a paradise unparalleled since the Golden Age in Muslim Spain. When the State of Israel came into being, it attracted world-wide admiration and sympathy.
That was wonderful, but below the surface of the national consciousness – if one may generalize - a sense of unease, of disorientation, set in. The tried and trusted defense mechanisms, which had given the Jews a feeling of orientation and awareness of lurking dangers, disintegrated. They felt that something was out of order, that the well-known road signs were not working anymore. When the Gentiles laud the Jews or are ready to make alliances with them, that is suspicious. Clearly, something sinister must be behind it. Things are not as we knew them. That’s frightening.
Since then, we have been working feverishly to bring the situation back to normal. Without being conscious of it, we do what we can to be hated again, to feel at home, on familiar ground.
If there is a conspiracy, it is a conspiracy of ourselves against ourselves. We shall not rest until the world is anti-Semitic again, and we know how to behave.
As the jolly song goes: “The entire world is against us, but what the hell.”

International condemnation is apparently a small price to pay when Israel can count upon the American taxpayers to heft eighty percent of their war-making costs. To quote Diamond Jim Fisk, "Nothing is lost save honor".

On NPR this morning some Israeli spokesperson was claiming the flotilla violated international law. Must be a different law than the one against collective punishment. He also ran through the same arguments a pro-Israeli Common Dreams poster put forward a few days ago. Exactly the same arguments.
What a shock. ;-)
Anyway, best of luck to those on the boats.
Sounds like something Mark Regev, the self-hating Australian, would say.
"On NPR this morning some Israeli spokesperson was claiming the flotilla violated international law."
It violates International Law to put a ship on the ocean? Thats real news. Surely you aren't serious?
That's what he said.
And don't call me Shirley.
You guys really think highly of yourselves. You can thank the Arab leadership who, by unilaterally denying peace 3 separate times, are providing you with this opportunity to indulge your self-righteousness. The Palestinians need some decent leaders to guide them from within, not yet another smug coalition of international do-gooders ignoring the complexity of the situation in the Middle East. While your intentions might be good, I highly doubt this mission will do anything but move us further away from the ultimate goal: a lasting peace and a permanent end to decades of hatred and bloodshed.
Yup. Definitely. All of Isreal's problems are completely undeserved and are due only to the intransigence of sworn enemies of its self-proclaimed legitimacy as a "Jewish state", including all those totally unwarranted criticisms by the United Nations itself of course.
Incidentally, you forgot to mention those nasty Persians in Iran. And the Turks aren't exactly playing nice recently either. In fact, apart from USA Incorporated for its own purposes, Israel seems to be losing even its few remaining friends for some strange reason.
It can't possibly be any fault of its own actions. It must be another one of those global anti-Semitic plots that seem to surface from time to time throughout history. Whatever the reason, it's not looking good. Thank God for all those "unofficial" nuclear weapons and the "Samson option" to hasten the ultimate rapture -- although that's not such a great outcome for Jews either if you believe the version espoused by the Zionists' fundamentalist Xian allies.
Is he not just suggesting that all the fault does not lie with the Israeli? Which of course it doesn't.
Well, it sure seemed to me like an effort to suggest, at least by implication, that it was entirely the fault of the Arabs who "unilaterally" denied peace. Even if this particular OP did not actually intend it quite that way, the shifting of blame onto the victims is a not uncommon (often "programmed") Israeli apologist tactic in general.
We need progressive101's usual post setting forth all of the tactical particulars of Isreal's blogging propaganda strategy.
"Well, it sure seemed to me like an effort to suggest, at least by implication, that it was entirely the fault of the Arabs who "unilaterally" denied peace."
Surely no one would want to prove their stupidity by suggesting anything like that. Even the Israeli admit they have made mistakes. About every 10 years or so!
Personally I think there is plenty of blame to go around, starting weith the UN back in 47-48.
But at this point I think we all agree this needs to have a solution. Brilliant statement that. yes?????
Perhaps you'd care to explain how construction materials and humanitarian aid will hurt the ultimate goal of "a lasting peace and a permanent end to decades of hatred and bloodshed." While you're at it, maybe you could tell us how destroying homes and preventing shipments of food, medicine and building materials helps to bring about peace.
You weren't suggesting the Israeli were blameless were you?
I don't think people here are either smug, self righteous, international do gooders when it comes to this, they are just hoping for peace.
Are you referring to the 'Arab Leadership' that hasn't yet been assassinated or imprisoned by the Israelis? Or murdered under the guise of trying to broker peace - Arafat (poisoned by Mossad).
And any reading of history will point CLEARLY to the fact that the Israelis and not the Arabs have been the true 'deniers' of peace.
What the Palestinians need is for the 'occupying force (read Israel)' to withdraw from the occupied territories. Further what they need is for the Israelis to stop cold bloodedly murdering and torturing their children, woman, infirmed, elderly and all innocents.
And if the mission brings hope, food, a new home, the belief that there is solidarity in the outside world it will have been a success.
Israel is the sole cause for brutality and bloodshed in the region and few if any rational people doubt that. Withdraw, at the very least Israel, from the occupied territory and Stop stealing land that isn't yours and stop killing children.
Aggression breeds aggression.
The flotilla idea was just as bad last week as it is this week.
I can see how bulldozing someone's home is aggressive, but how is bringing them materials to rebuild it aggressive?
Please explain.
When it interferes with ethnic cleansing. Key
component of an apartheid state.
Lily_otv's statement could easily have been heard in 1963-64 at the time of the Freedom Riders and the Alabama-Mississippi Civil Rights marches, or at the time of the anti-Nuclear encampments in Britain, or.... any non-violent confrontation of unjust authority or militarism. Aggressive marchers. Aggressive peace encampment.
Is the flotilla armed? No.
Is it carrying weapons, weapons-making materials or combatants? No.
Is Israeli control of the perimeter of Gaza legal under international law? No.
Is threatening and ramming civilian vessels and jailing foreign nationals taken outside the internationally recognized boundaries of the state legal? No.
So please use that word "aggression" more sensibly and sensitively.
Lily says: "The flotilla idea was just as bad last week as it is this week."
I say: "Lily utters nonsense."
'Aggression breeds aggression.'
Perhaps the United States and the Western European countries should not have tried to halt the aggression of Hitler's Third Reich. Perhaps they should have just let him have his way. After all in your words 'aggression breeds aggression.'
One must ask, are you a fool or a shill?
I don't recall you complaining when Israel blanket-bombed Gaza with phosphorus. You pals with Letto?
I just hope these folks don't push it to far and get someone killed.
As I said before, these guys are not bluffing.
If we want this world to change for the better, we must be willing to risk our lives. Israel has lost its way and has become an evil entity. I am not joking. Israel has become a danger to itself and to the United States, and I pray that Obama sees that and calls Netanyahu's bluff. All he has to do is to cut off aid.
God bless all those who sail on the boats! They are the highest kind of heroes, those who risk their lives for justice. If a cause is not worth dying for, then its not worth living for either. I wish them Godspeed!
I have to say that death is very permanent. Its not something to be taken lightly.
Netanyahu and the Israeli aren't bluffing. (at least thats my opinion)
Nazis dealt harshly with those providing aid to Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. The Zionists haven’t taken their own racist supremacist ideology to the same logical extremes as the Nazis, at least not yet.
The Nazis sincerely believed their actions against Jews were strictly self-defense; Jews were undermining Aryan unity, and the Nazis were ready to sacrifice themselves for an endangered Fatherland.
They also believed that the Master Race needed lebensraum to fulfill its destiny; unfortunately most of the prime real estate was already inhabited by untermenschen. According to the tenets of Nazi racist teleology, these subhumans were usurping land that was destined for more genetically qualified occupiers.
For those who accepted the fanatically racist premises of the Nazis, the solution was self-evident.
What Israel and the long standing plentiful Jewish support for Israel is doing is steadily making clear that the Jews asked for the holocaust. I do not mean this in any conspiratorial sense even if there seems to be evidence to that effect.
Concepts such as Anti Semitism and Nazism disguise the reality of a cultural clash between self-consciously elect groups.
This analysis deplores the consequences but indicates one cannot distinguish between it and the premises.
This has happened before in Jewish history. just read the Old Testament. But when doing so see how inventive the Jewish history writers are at interpreting the happenings of history as a justification for their elect status. It is classic self-serving nonsense: a remarkable, ultimately very slippery development of tribal self-consciousness and superiority that relies on firmly positioning oneself as the victim.
One Biblical understanding suffices to make the whole edifice crumble, and that is that God works through history and stress on the nation of Israel even one Jew is therefore a sign of error in the world for which Jews have to pay. Modern Jews see this as an indication of their innocence but this idea is numbingly illogical because it allows the Jew to do anything he likes. It makes him God. This fact is hidden under a cloud of high sounding words; ultimately under sentiment.
Indeed, every monotheist ultimately believes he is God, because the God he worships can only come from his mind. Ironically, the history is there to show this.
I was pointing out similarities between two virulent racist supremacist ideologies, because most Americans have so far been blind to them.
In contrast to Zionism, Jews are a diverse minority, and it’s dangerous to generalize about them with statements such as “the Jews asked for the holocaust.” Not only is it dangerous to generalize about a minority group, it’s especially dangerous to imply that any victims of genocide brought it on themselves by their actions.
Some Jews support Zionism in varying degrees, some don’t.

Your assault on all Jews for what a percentage advocates is chilling. Would you paint with such a broad brush stroke for the United States, presuming all of its citizens back war after war? I do NOT advocate for Israel's aggressive positions and I think these will work against it, however, Israel's carnage is a PITTANCE when compared to what the U.S. has done in terms of a number of modern wars of aggression. And secondly, since you take yourself for such an expert on "The Jews," Christians have PLENTY to answer for in the way of carnage, or do you think such items as The Inquisition and various and sundry pogroms leave them off the hook? Bush found a good part of his support for war against "terror" and that means innocents in Arab lands in the evangelical churches. So before you condemn all those who follow one patriarchal religion, you ought to clear your historical lens of what has been propagated by the one you seem all too prepared to grant the moral high ground to.
I am against war in all shapes and forms, and I hold no group exempt. This is why my posts frequently speak about this dark aspect (which I define as an archetypal component of unrefined human nature) that I believe has been championed by religious elites for centuries. Although a percentage of worldwide Jews and a portion of those residing in Israel may go along with policies of naked aggression, the state of Israel is a relatively new phenomenon. It has much to answer for; however, before you cast a stone so recklessly (blemishing the reputation of ALL Jews), you ought to consider that most of history has been a blood bath. It is THAT mindset that needs to change or there will always be victims and conquistadors. THAT the U.S. and its arms' merchants profit substantially from this outrage is the item that should horrify you.
Your statement that the Jews brought on/deserved the holocaust is unacceptable, and now has you identified as a bigot. From here on in, I will be most cautious with regard to anything further that you see fit to post. You are certainly no progressive!
OSTOGROTH: Thank you for your calm, detached more accurate depiction of what's at play.
I found this Jerusalem Post Article interesting.

Sounds like a propaganda article to me. In the Jerusalem Post article the Israeli Defense Force sends some 15,000 benevolent. Still, Gaza is in a lock-down which sounds more like a Nazi tactic of doling out just so much at a time and only for their own reasons (ref no 2 below).
It says the IDF is sending in all this aid and does not mention even once that they themselves are the sole reason any aid is needed at all. Further, the comments on the article are generally hate filled and almost all against any aid to Palestinians, even from the IDF.

(1) Yitskhok Rudashevski, diary entry (22nd December, 1941)
One must stand in long lines to receive bread and other products. Jews are ousted from them. Germans go to the rows, throw out the Jews. Jews receive less food than the Aryans. Our life is a life of helpless terror. One day has no future. We have one consolation. The Red Army shows a fighting spirit. It has become concentrated. It gives blow for blow, it is offering resistance
The irony, the irony. This was done to Jews in WWII and now the Jews do it to the Palestinians. Only the Palestinians have nothing close to the Red Army in WWII with which to fight back.
We know and acknowledge how wrong it was to have perpetrated so much on the Jews. Why is it so hard for Jews to know and acknowledge the humanitarian crimes they perpetrate?

Sounds like a propaganda article to me. In the Jerusalem Post article the Isreali Defense Force sends some 15,000 tons of food a week from Israel. The article makes it seems downright benevolent.
