The Land Mines Obama Won't Touch
Many people are troubled that Barack Obama flew to Oslo to receive the Nobel Peace Prize so soon after escalating the war in Afghanistan. He is now more than doubling the number of troops there when George W. Bush left office.
The irony was not lost on the President, and he tried to address it in his Nobel acceptance speech. "I am responsible for the deployment of thousands of young Americans to battle in a distant land," he said. "Some will kill. Some will be killed. And so I come here with an acute sense of the cost of armed conflict -- filled with difficult questions about the relationship between war and peace, and our effort to replace one with the other."
Granted, there's a gap here between the rhetoric and the reality. But there's always been something askew about Nobel Peace Prize, in no small part because it's given in the name of the man who invented dynamite, one of the most powerful and destructive weapons in the human arsenal.
It was rumored that after Alfred Nobel brought his version of Frankenstein into the world, he was torn by guilt over his creation, his shame said to have intensified when a French newspaper prematurely ran his obituary with the headline, "The Merchant of Death is Dead." The article vilified him as a man "who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before."
What's more, until the end of his life he corresponded with a woman named Bertha von Suttner, who had briefly worked as his secretary. Many believe that Nobel was moved by a powerful antiwar book she had written titled "Lay Down Your Arms." Whatever his reasons, when his will created the Nobel Prizes he specifically included among them a prize for peace. Von Suttner became one of its first recipients.
After Nobel's death, events turned grim, as if to mock him further. The arms race exploded beyond anything he could have imagined. From the coupling of science and the military came ever more ingenious weapons of destruction that would take even more lives in ever more horrible ways.
One of the most insidious was the land mine, that small, explosive device filled with shrapnel that burns or blinds, maims or kills. Triggered by the touch of a foot or movement or even sound, more often than not it's the innocent who are its victims -- 75 to 80 percent of the time, in fact.
As a weapon, variations of land mines have been around since perhaps as early as the 13th century, but it was not until World War I that the technology was more or less perfected, if that can be said of weapons that mangle and mutilate the human body, and their use became common.
The United States has not actively used land mines since the first Gulf War in 1991, but we still possess some 10-15 million of them, making us the third largest stockpiler in the world, behind China and Russia. Like those two countries, we have refused to sign an international agreement banning the manufacture, stockpiling and use of land mines. Since 1987, 156 other nations have signed it, including every country in NATO. Amongst that 156, more than 40 million mines have been destroyed.
Just days before Obama flew to Oslo to make his Nobel Peace Prize speech, an international summit conference was held in Cartagena, Colombia, to review the progress of the treaty. The United States sent representatives and the State Department says our government has begun a comprehensive review of its current policy.
Last year 5,000 people were killed or wounded by land mines, often placed in the ground years before, during wars long since over. They kill or blow away the limbs of a farmer or child as indiscriminately as they do a soldier. But still we refuse to sign, citing security commitments to our friends and allies, such as South Korea, where a million mines fill the demilitarized zone between it and North Korea.
Twelve years ago, at the time the treaty was first put into place, the Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and Jody Williams, an activist from Vermont who believes that by organizing into a movement, ordinary people can matter. She proved it, despite the stubborn refusal of her own country's government to do the right thing.
Last week, Jody Williams condemned America's continuing refusal to sign the treaty as "a slap in the face to land mine survivors, their families, and affected communities everywhere."
The Nobel Committee said that part of the reason it was giving the Peace Prize to President Obama was for his respect of international law and his efforts at disarmament. And twice in his Nobel lecture, the President spoke of how often more civilians than soldiers die in a war. Then he said this:
"I believe that all nations, strong and weak alike, must adhere to standards that govern the use of force. I, like any head of state, reserve the right to act unilaterally if necessary to defend my nation. Nevertheless, I am convinced that adhering to standards strengthens those who do, and isolates -- and weakens -- those who don't."
And still the land mine treaty goes unsigned by the government he leads. Go figure.

Show AllWe only have to wait until the companies that made the mines start to get paid for recycling them ---- K-Street will make an enormous profit; as will the parasites in Washington who will temporarily "oppose" the destruction of said mines. Those would be the same traitorous parasites who approved the deployment of the mines.
All is well in Washington: 'the money is for nothing and the chicks are free....'. In a just world each and every one of these creatures who so love war will pay an enormous price in personal suffering ... soon..
We are all paying that enormous price in suffering, especially in countries where these weapons are being used. Most of the people profiting from mines will probably have to wait for death to pay. It's not a just world, but it might be a just universe. It's one reason I believe in Karma. Check your portfolios carefully, you post yuppie Americans, to see what you are investing in.
I just saw a program on television about the price Vietnam is paying for land mines. It's over 30 years, and kids are still loosing their lives or limbs over these 'toys'.

I'd like to see a global Ralph Nader style initiative that holds weapons companies to account for the damage done to civilians. Let the land mind manufacturers pay for all the prosthetic limbs, let them pay to clean up the lethal litter left behind when the home team (soldiers) packs it up for the next target location. If we saw real accountability attached, the flagrant use of heinous weaponry that tends to impact civilians 80% of the time might be done away with, or at least vastly reduced.
While we're at it, I'd LOVE to see a regeneration of a bill from congress aimed at war profiteers. First in line to pay dues would be Blackwater. It is a crime to humanity that great minds, insofar as an understanding of science/engineering goes, choose to use their cerebral endowment for the design of obscenely efficient weaponry.
That is an excellent idea and long overdue given the countless number of victims over the years. The war profiteers need to be divested of their profits and have that money directed towards reparations for the victims. Families and loved ones of the victims also need to be compensated for they have almost as much pain and suffering to live with for the rest of their lives.
Very good idea, Sioux Rose. Oh if only I were ruler of the universe....
I remember hearing about a top aide for Bill Clinton reporting that during the final days of his administration, he was faced with the dilemma of whether or not to sign a petition advocating a ban on land mines. He commented privately that he MIGHT sign the petition if he thought the american people gave a damn. This is part of the problem facing the left. How do we galvanize the public so that they will demand an end to the carnage being inflicted on people ten thousand miles away?
perhaps if bill was told that some women would sleep with him as a result of him
signing we would be part of that treaty!
Imagine being so detached from humanity that whether to save kids from being maimed and killed is a *political* decision!
God, what a lame ass excuse. I wonder if Bill is listening to himself. This man had a chance, and he gave it up and is blaming the 'American people'. Clinton is a moral dwarf not because he couldn't keep his zipper zipped, but because so many of his choices were morally bankrupt. Clinton is an intelligent man, and very articulate. I'm afraid Obama is in the same mould. We need someone with moral fiber who is also smart and well spoken. With our murderous corporate oligarchy, electoral process and two party system, we will never get such a person. It all ends with revolution, every time. I'm afraid that's the only solution. The socialist 'takeovers' in Latin America may be relatively bloodless, but the American corporate oligarchy is much too powerful to go without a fight.
Finally someone else is talking about this country being a corporate oligarchy. Most people just look at me like deer in headlights when I talk that noise. It really hasn't mattered who was in office the last 60 years. And we don't have a two party system just a one party system masquerading as a two party system. If we could only implement a maximum wage. But of course those few companies that control this country will never allow it. And in reference to the land mines most likely still being made are made by one of the big three. If not all of them.
What would a truly Christian Nation Do.. If there was a God in the Greecian tradition of Thor and those, The usa would be in deep trouble..
Hope obomba sleeps well at night.
There is no defensible moral foundation for any weapon that kills indiscriminately by design, where 75% percent of its victims are foreknown to be innocent civilians. In addition to doubling the Af-Pakistan War, while saying "war is peace", Obama rises to the status of great pretender, great deceiver.
Deception works. Even The Nation now joins the choir of neocons and other MSM 'liberals' in a sycophantic chorus of praise for this deceiver warrior.

John Nichols writes: "Obama acknowledged both the absurdity of his circumstance with a grace that was as appealing as it was commendable...The president's frankness ... and the humility he displayed throughout his address Thursday in Oslo offered a glimpse of Obama at his best."
Soaring bullshit at its best from The Nation Magazine! Obama is Reagan 2.0 with non-stick armor. Sickening.
The USA is using landmines in Afghanistan as we saw in the video of recently captured USA munitions in Nuristan.
The photo was clear enough to read the serial numbers.
Also Korea is not an excuse because South Korea plants it's own landmines.
In all of this corporate dictatorship the people of the USA are as much victims as the rest of the world and face a myriad of problems to solve with a practically totally unresponsive, except tp repress, government.
So to blame the low level of opposition of the victim is disingenuous and distracting.
Blaming the USA people for not doing more to oppose the corporate dictatorship is like blaming a battered women for not shouting back at her 6'6" 250 lb. brute of a husband.
Bush Sr. refused
Bill Clinton refused
Bush Jr. refused
Obama refused.
Very predictable, no surprises here, just following an established historical precedent. Maybe the Bushs and Clintons will get a so-called peace prize as well.
The same could be said for almost every single politician in Washington since Vietnam. Unless it hurts them, I don't expect any of them to consider. It would be like trying to get them to pass laws giving us the same health care coverage they are getting.
There should be a campaign, or call your congress people: Ask congress to refuse their public health care coverage (they can buy private) until the people get public coverage..
Let's also not forget cluster-bombs, that twin-brother to the land mine delivered from the air and designed to be especially atractive to small children. These too, ought to be banned.

CLUSTER BOMBS ARE UNBELIEVABLY CRIMINAL. AND THIS NATION CLAIMS TO BE A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY? WILL THE PEOPLE WAKE UP???
Land mines, like ground-attack aircraft, are terror weapons.
If we had a democracy, I'd put a proposal that any legislator that doesn't sign a bill outlawing terror weapons be forced to personally spend the rest of his time in public office clearing them out of the ground somewhere.
Agree!
Some elected officials just like to dismember little children,
Blowing off their little arms and legs like the opening scenes in Orwell's 1984.
Happy Holidays.
"this land is your land - this land is mine land . . ."
Thank you for the chuckle on a very serious subject.
Reminds me of the old days when they said if an atomic bomb falls, stick you head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.
Well the government's made a document
To help prevent embarrassment
And in the event of an accident
Catching us with our trousers down
It's no use to you when you're dead
Nor even when alive
And the name of this piece of paper is
"Protect and Survive"
Ch:
So when the nukes come raining down
It's great to be alive, well
World War Three can be such fun
If you protect and survive
Protect and survive
Well a nuclear strike can be recognised
It would stand out in a crowd
There's a flash, then a bang, then a blast of heat
Then a bloody great mushroom cloud
So if you happen to see one at the end of your street
Would you please pick up the telephone
And inform your local police
ch.
Put sticky tape on your windows
Block your ears and close your eyes
Though it won't make a blind bit of difference
You won't have to watch yourself fry
If you find yourself in the target zone
And you haven't got a shelter
Take a spade into the garden
And dig like merry hell, sir
ch.
They've got strategic ICBM's
Both theatre and tactical
With independently targeted
Multiple reentry vehicles
Backfire bombers, Polaris subs, cruise missiles
And the boys who hang around the Pentagon
Can't wait to use these toys
ch.
When Armageddon gets underway
And the rockets come pouring down
All the bloody politicians who started it
Will scuttle off underground
And when they finally reemerge
With no life to be found
They can administrate the rubble
And order each other around
ch.
For they give us a four-minute warning
When the rockets are on their way
To give us time to panic and Christians time to pray
So when you hear the siren going
Place your head between your thighs
Whilst maintaining this posture
You can make a final gesture
And with a little muscular pressure
You can kiss your arse goodbye
So when the nukes come raining down
It's great to be alive, well
World War Three can be such fun
If you protect and survive
Protect and survive
Protect and survive
Protect and...
Obama's refusal to ban landmines is not as troubling as his being given the Nobel Peace Prize for being another warmonger. Now that he has it, all he has to do is show off with it and continue the war plans whatever they are. Even Bush never had it this easy.
"The United States has not actively used land mines since the first Gulf War in 1991, but we still possess some 10-15 million of them, making us the third largest stockpiler in the world, behind China and Russia."
Total bullshit. The "demilitarized zone" between North and South Korea has been mined for decades.
The United States is right up there in the manufacture and sale of weapons that mutilate. Land mines and cluster bombs are used against civilians, and must be outlawed, along with atomic weapons. Come on, people, this is basic. How can we even begin to stop war while this is going on? We had better get our shit together as a species, or the prophesies of doom for 2012 will come true. It will take a miracle, and I do believe in miracles, but not much. Besides, I have a funny feeling it's way too late.
" the force must be proportional and that whenever possible civilians must be spared." Obama's comment at his speech. What a farce! There is no way to determine proportionality in wars with such weapons being used and left to kill and maim mostly children long afterward.

Obama is the greatest leader this country has had. I mean, it is historical that a black man got elected. He is working to make our nation safe, how dare you all critisize him. he is pragmatic and doesn't live in a fantasy world like you all obviously do. Like he said, since the first human there has been war AND there is evil in the world that the us has to work to exterminate. Obama said that we will never completely conquer evil, but that is what defines goodness and the god given right of safedom - never ever giving up the eternal Christian vigilance against the evildoers. The enemy uses landmines as well and most likely blames thier land mines on USA. How could MLK defend America against 9/11 style attacks? We must all sacrifice to prevent another attack, never again. How can you be free when you're dead? The cameras and listening devices take away far less freedom then death does. Same goes for the wall we should build cross the Mexi border, minimal freedom loss maximal safedom. Our founding fathers guaranteed that all men should be granted safedom for all. It is only in safedom that we are true nannymen, all beholden to the nanny bossum of the motherland. Our forefathers, when they bargained for farm land peacefully with the Indians and brought some friends from Africa over to housesit, saw the threat from jealous mouchers who would try to destroy what they didn't earn. Wealth that is created out of thin air by the brilliance of the white mind is what these terrorist are after. Muslims, who ban the charging of interest, prevent the creation of wealth and thus have to rob it. Bottom line, Obama is a christian in disguise of a moucher , who will end the jealousy of the Muslim mouchermen, bring safedom back to the nannystate, thus bringing the god given lands of America back into harmony, freedom achieved through the creation of great walls protecting these lands forevermore.
You really should have added a 'sarcasm' tag because there are lunatics who actually *believe* that kind of mindless dreck and I'm sure you wouldn't want to be mistaken for one of them.
