Mr. Netanyahu, Tear Down This Wall
On the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Western leaders are full of self-congratulation. But their paeans to universal freedom ring hollow, when they bear large responsibility for another wall constricting human freedom: the apartheid wall dividing the Palestinian West Bank.
Israeli authorities refer to it as a "separation barrier," but that's misleading. The wall doesn't separate pre-1967 Israel from the West Bank. If that's all it did, it would be an entirely different political object. Instead, the wall cuts deep into the Palestinian West Bank, separating Palestinians from each other and from their land, and signaling to the Palestinians that Israel intends to annex territory that Palestinians want for an independent Palestinian state. The fact that Western countries that support the Israeli government - above all the United States - say nothing about the West Bank wall signals to Palestinians that Western support for Palestinian statehood is merely rhetorical.
Today, AFP reports, Palestinians tore down a chunk of the wall near Ramallah.
AFP notes that 85 percent of the planned wall is inside the West Bank, and it would leave 9.5 percent of the West Bank and 35,000 West Bank Palestinians between the barrier and the Green Line that marks the 1967 border with Israel.
The World Court issued a resolution in 2004 calling for those parts of the barrier that are inside the West Bank to be torn down and for further construction in the territory to cease. Israel and Western countries have ignored the World Court resolution.
Two years ago Israel's own High Court ruled against the route of the wall near the Palestinian village of Bilin, but the Israeli government ignored the ruling of its own highest court.
Today, the Israeli-Palestinian "peace process" and the Palestinian Authority are at the brink of collapse, the New York Times reports.
We've reached this point in large measure because of the unwillingness of the Obama Administration to put real pressure on the Israeli government to implement past agreements - in particular, to implement a freeze on the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. When the first President Bush demanded a settlement freeze, he backed up his demand with real pressure - holding up loan guarantees to Israel. The Obama Administration never indicated that there was any "or else" associated with its demand for a settlement freeze, leading the Netanyahu government to conclude that it could just wait the Obama Administration out - a conclusion that appears to have been borne out by events.
This would be an especially opportune time for U.S. officials to indicate that they intend to meaningfully oppose the ongoing construction of "facts on the ground" that are constricting the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank and undermining their hopes for national independence - facts on the ground like the apartheid wall.

Zionists for Peace are the vanguard of the apartheid state of Israel. They function to create the appearance of a lively debate, and define the 'progressive' or 'liberal' limit on the spectrum of discussion, while fully supporting the continued apartheid division of Palestine that has existed for the last 60 years.
The outline of the oligarchy's propaganda strategy was described by N. Chomsky in his article 'How Propaganda Works in the West', ...
"Keeping the People Passive & Obedient
The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views."
Netty ya HOO and OBOMBA had a secret meeting in the whitey's house yesterday( 1hour and 40mins)oh to be a mouse in the corner. Then Netty made a, I'm a good guy speech to his Florida groupies.
Living as I do in NZ...that is New Zealand..I must say how refreshing it is to join a site where you can listen to the comments of enlightened Americans and Israelis. Its easy to believe that with the exception of Chomksy and Uri Avenery and a few others, both the US and its satelite state of Israel,[or is it the other way round], are populated by fascists. We have enough of these here. I've written letter after letter to the major daily newspaper on the killing last northern summer of 320 Gazan kids by the Israeli generals cowering behind their "security" wall...without any been published. Meantime a zionist group has paid for almost daily adverts in the same paper justifying the atrocity. Our "news" here is perhaps as misleading as elsewhere in the West on Israel/Palestine...long may this forum run.

Greetings from Down Under (over the Tasman from you...)! I am not writing letters into our newspapers, it's futile. Here the media is also hijacked by pro-Israeli, pro-US comments, letters, even editorials.
I have family in Israel (Haifa, Netanya and Tel Aviv) and have seen the wall many times. It is a very sad sight... I have also seen skirmishes (in Jerusalem) between Orthodox Jews and Palestinians.
What I find striking, is that most Jews simply don't even think of the Palestinians, who are living (existing) actually just a couple of km's from them. They seem to live, work, worship, go about their business as normal. Now, that the wall is pretty much surrounding their state, they feel safe and don't really care about the Arabs around them. Out of sight...
If you talk to your friends or family about their opinion of the Palestinians, everyone seems to be happy to have them "over there" and should they come to work in Israel, they should be thoroughly checked. They can't smuggle in a fountain pen, let alone a bomb any more! It is OK, but maybe there should be a better solution than the wall and maybe somehow the Israelis should be a bit more aware how their neighbors live!
Good to hear from an Aussie.I have often thought that a fascist society must appear quite "normal" to its participants. It takes a bit of effort and clearmindedness to see thru the lies that make up this normalcy. Both Nz and Australia suffered from the colonialism that presently afflicts Israel/Palestine. Maori, Aborigine, Indian, Palestinian....all indigineous minorities suffering at the hands of recent immigrants. The Palestinian "nakba", of course, is the most recent and ongoing of these conflicts. The corporate media would rather we focus on Paris hilton's sex life than 320 Arab kids slaughtered by high tech weaponry supplied by her fellow citizens...such is the algebra of negation. Now it appears that Obama's push for health care for poor Americans is again at the expense of the Palestinians...in the queue for crumbs from the Imperial table the Arabs come behind the blacks and hispanic and Native Americans...
The UN "created" the State of Israel therefore equally it can "create" the State of Palestine.
Everyone except the Zionists think that this should be behind 1967 Borders.
Once this is accomplished all that is necessary is to call upon UN peace keepers to boot the robbing b*stards out and give the Palestinians some justice so lacking for 60 odd years.
I believe there are moves afoot by the PA to put such a resolution before the UN Security Council.
Now there's a quandary for the US - damned if they support it by AIPAC and damned by the rest of the world if they don't.
Who is this man who dares to speak against the powerful, the benevolent, Israel? Isn’t he afraid of being called anti-Semite? Doesn’t this Naiman know that the master of the universe, Netanyahu, the main stream media, and their friends can destroy any one in America?
I am so sad that Israel’s crimes against the Palestinians over 60 years had to become so horrific before few honorable Americans started to speak up.
If the UN had the authority to create the State of Israel, should it not, also have the authority to dissolve it?
Sadly, at the time the UN was not aware at the time of delivery that what they thought was a healthy baby state harbored a malignant tumor that would overtake the baby, and neither dissolve nor even shrink using conventional therapy.

"Today, the Israeli-Palestinian "peace process" and the Palestinian Authority are at the brink of collapse, the New York Times reports."
You mean to tell me that there is currently a peace process between the PA and Israel? Wow! Another new thing I've learned today.
But, seriously, here's a great article on the subject:
Ni’lin demonstrators topple 8 meter tall concrete wall
http://palsolidarity.org/2009/11/9226
"Financed with U.S. aid at a cost of $1.5 million per mile, the Israeli wall prevents residents from receiving health care and emergency medical services. In other areas, the barrier separates farmers from their olive groves which have been their families' sole livelihood for generations." Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, Page 43, Jan/Feb. 2007
A wall twice as high and five times as long as the one that fell in Berlin, is close to completion in the West Bank.
One of the chants I learned during one of my four visits to the agricultural village of Bilin, was "The wall will fall in Bilin; the wall will fall like in Berlin".
http://www.wearewideawake.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1481&Itemid=226
Israeli Anarchist Against the Wall, Jonathan Pollak informed me in 2005:
"Although Israel marketed the Wall as a security barrier, logic suggests such a barrier would be as short and straight as possible. Instead, it snakes deep inside the West Bank, resulting in a route that is twice as long as the Green Line, the internationally recognized border. Israel chose the Wall's path in order to dispossess Palestinians of the maximum land and water, to preserve as many Israeli settlements as possible, and to unilaterally determine a border.
"The Palestinian aspiration for an independent state is also threatened by the Wall, as it isolates villages from their mother cities and divides the West Bank into disconnected cantons [Bantustans/ghettos]. The Israeli human rights organization B`Tselem conservatively estimates that 500,000 Palestinians are negatively impacted by the Wall.
"It is time for both sides to refuse killing. We believe that, as with Apartheid South Africa, Americans have a vital role to play in ending Israeli occupation. We are confident that Israeli occupation will one day be defeated, as were other US government supported repressive regimes - Apartheid South Africa, Pinochet`s Chile and racial segregation in the United States."-excerpted from my Memoirs in Occupied Territory

West Bank rabbi: "even BABIES and CHILDREN can be KILLED if they pose a threat to the nation"
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1126890.html
"Just weeks after the arrest of alleged Jewish terrorist, Yaakov Teitel, a West Bank rabbi on Monday released a book giving Jews permission to kill Gentiles who threaten Israel.
Rabbi Yitzhak Shapiro, who heads the Od Yosef Chai Yeshiva in the Yitzhar settlement, wrote in his book "The King's Torah" that even BABIES and CHILDREN can be KILLED if they pose a threat to the nation.
Shapiro based the majority of his teachings on passages quoted from the Bible, to which he adds his opinions and beliefs.
"It is permissable to KILL the RIGHTEOUS among NATIONS even if they are NOT RESPONSIBLE for the threatening situation," he wrote, adding: "If we kill a Gentile who has sinned or has violated one of the seven commandments - because we care about the commandments - there is nothing wrong with the murder."
Several prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Yithak Ginzburg and Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, have recommended the book to their students and followers."
I don't mean to doubt your words, but if this is true, this is loathsome and repugnant. Thank you for sharing.

This is NOT my word, this was reported in haaretz, here is the link, please verify:

The truth is too disturbing for some, nahida. The israeli newspaper Ha'aretz is an excellent source. They have more accurate information on the subject than any major newspaper in the USA. 95% or more of Americans have no idea whatsoever what is going on in the Occupied Territories.
She linked to an article published by a reputable Israeli newspaper. Yet, you write "if this is true..."
I wouldn't necessarily blame the rabbi for those gonzo statements. Just like our soldiers who suffer from PTSD because of illegal/immoral wars, the Zionists are suffering from POSD (Post-Occupation Stress Disorder).
Why exactly would they suffer from POSD? Should the Palestinians be the ones affected with it?
johnny u great idea. then baby nut and yahoo wouldn't need

Well, Robert Fisk, Medea Benjamin, yours truly and a few others were urging Obama, when he made the trip to Cairo in June, to make that "Muslim speech" to maybe stop off at the Egypt/Gaza border and say "Mr. Mubarak, tear down this fence that separates Gaza from the outside world" along with a visit to say, Bethlemen, and "tear down this wall, Mr. Netanyahu." Surprisingly enough, Obama did not take our advice, maybe because he had to hurry off for a ritual cleansing of himself for a minor act of pro-Muslim sympathy by going to a Holocaust scene in Germany. And we know what he has done (nothing) in the months since to pressure either Israel or Egypt to cease their murderous acts against the Palestinian people. At least Mr. Naiman abandons for once his tendency to say that Obama will do these things if we the grassroots put pressure him to do the right thing. Sarah van Gelder carries on that project on today's CD.
Good point.
Also, good to see you "back", Jerry; I'd been wondering where you'd gotten to lately!

Only Al-Jazeera seems to have covered the story of some Palestinians and supporting Israeli and international activists pulled down a symbolic small part of the 'demarcation barrier' yesterday or the day before.
But I could be wrong !
I wonder why this column, and the comments below, fail to acknowledge the reason why the wall was constructed in the first place. As I'm sure most commentators here know, between 2000-2005 hundreds of Israeli civilians were killed in attacks originating from the west bank, and thousands more were wounded - but all this seems to slip Robert Naiman's mind, or perhaps he thinks that it's completely irrelevant and unimportant. However, there is no question that the wall has been very effective in stopping these attacks. Even if you think that putting a stop to the arbitrary killing of Israeli civilians doesn't justify the wall's construction, acknowledging this reason for its existence is absolutely necessary in order to have a truthful, honest discussion.
A report from US Army WAR WAR College, estimates the total cost to Americans who collaborate with the Israeli Super power's agenda(to ethnically cleanse by means of genocide) over the years has been about 1.6 TRILLION .The US Zionist and media collaborators have exercised its veto in the united nation in excess of 39 times. The US media accomplice, intentionally a source of lies/distortion and omissions, are under the boot of AIPAC'S domination, use of fear, through mostly blackmail and bribes/lobbying.
The single largest cause of deaths to Palestinian children by Israeli soldiers has been gunfire to the head.
Israelis themselves who are helping and refusing to support the genocide are slowly increasing in numbers .Sometimes hundreds of Israelis have assisted Palestinians, rebuild their demolished homes. Rabbi Arik Ascherman(Rabbis for human rights)Jeff Halper(from the Israeli Committee Against house demolition)and similar activists are saying NO to Zionist policies.Globally there has been an awakening since the CAST LEAD ATROCITIES,Many people ,who knew nothing about the Ethnicity enemy/terrorist/ Zionist sadist policy, are seeking out honest writing about the the human catastrophe and for the first time in their lives, getting involved.
It seems like it is you who is rather misinformed or misinforming or conveniently ignoring the history of the wall or twisting it to fit your 'reality' or... Oh, hell, why don't I just come out and say it? It's obvious you're a shill/troll for Israel, one of those paid to misinform and mud the issues. I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you luck on this site, you're gonna need it convincing those who, through their own observations and experiences, turned that corner a looooooooooooooong time ago! Now, you can go and collect your payment from the Knesset or Mossad or Netanyahoo himself as you have done your part.
bligh4
I find it interesting that anyone that does not march in lockstep with the idea that the situation in Israel is caused exclusively by the Jews is immediatly branded a "troll". Why even have a discussion page? Just say " Israel and Jews that support it are evil" and everyone can answer "Ditto". Would save a lot of time....
blight. you have not been paying attention, Get a clue. There is a big distinction between Jew and Zionist.
Amused,
If what you claim is true regarding the wall being constructed for security purposes, then how do you explain the fact that the wall was built on Palestinian land and allowed Israel to steal another 10% of the West Bank?
If what you claim is true, then how do you explain the fact that in many cases, the wall separates Palestinians from their own lands, on which they farm, their only source of income?
If what you claim is true, then how do you account for the fact that the wall splits quite a few towns into two, preventing Palestinians from seeing each other, families from visiting each other, and students from going to school on the other side of town?
If you can explain these few points, then your argument might hold some water.
Additionally, the other problem with your argument is your ignoring the 40 year old military occupation and the constant violence used against Palestinian civilians.
Surely, if the wall were built for "security" purposes, then a reasonable person might ask: What caused the Palestinians to react this way in the first place?
The other problem with your argument is the lack of historical context.
Hamas' suicide attacks didn't start until the late 1990s AFTER the Oslo accords of 1993 brought about little to no improvement in the lives of Palestinians, and AFTER Israel continued to confiscate land and demolish homes while claiming it wanted peace.
So even the pretext - or more accurately, the justification - for the so-called "security" wall is based on the lie that Israel had exhausted all the options available to it before it started building the wall, and that the wall was just an inevitable outcome. It’s a false argument, no matter how you put it.
Mohawk, your reply is wrong in so many different ways, but I'll focus on correcting facts.
You claim that Hamas didn't start the suicide attacks until the late 1990s. In fact Hamas attacks started immediately after the Oslo agreement. A partial list includes:
- A car bomb in Afula (April 6, 1994) that killed 8 bus passengers.
- A suicide attack in Hadera (April 13, 1994) that killed 5 civilians.
- A suicide bomb on a bus in Tel Aviv (October 19, 1994) that killed 22 passengers.
- A suicide attack in a bus stop in Jerusalem (December 25, 1994) that wounded 13.
- A suicide attack in Beit Lid (January 22, 1995) - this time by Islamic Jihad, killing 21.
This is only a partial list of the attacks up to January 1995, and the list goes on and on.
Instead of changing the subject and dodging the question, how about answering the questions about the APARTHEID WALL?
Do you think you can do that?
Or is that a losing argument for you?
"Mohawk, your reply is wrong in so many different ways, but I'll focus on correcting facts."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"In so many different ways", aha...right.
But, don't tell us in what ways, just act arrogantly and focus on the one small issue you can spin in your favor.
Basically, it sounds like you concede that the thrust of my argument concerning the wall is spot on, otherwise you wouldn't overlook those points, nor would you overlook petrkrops' post either.
Hijack the discussion to fit YOUR agenda, but don't address the main issue that is THE APARTHEID WALL. Figures.
And how many of those were false flag operations by the Mossad? This is the Mossad's modus operandi.
Since you're so good at dates and figures, care to tell us how many Palestinians were killed by Israelis (settlers and IDF) prior to those incidents? I'm just curious...
MK Ultra, do you support arbitrary killing of Israeli civilians as a means in the Israel-Palestinian conflict? To make it clear, I mean blowing up of civilians in a bus, in a restaurant, in a shopping mall. It's interesting how mohawk above claimed that these Hamas attacks never occurred, but once confronted with the fact that they did occur, a response like your was immediately posted which, if I understand correctly, is justifying them. Sadly this pattern is typical to many comments posted on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on this site. The harshest possible words are used to describe any act of violence towards palestinians, but acts of violence by palestinians (no matter how brutal) are typically denied or conveniently forgotten (the preferred mode of propaganda) or, if all else fails, justified.
** ** ** ** ** "It's interesting how mohawk above claimed that these Hamas attacks never occurred, but once confronted with the fact that they did occur, a response like your was immediately posted which, if I understand correctly, is justifying them."
** ** ** ** ** **
Nice shilling to avoid addressing the APARTHEID WALL.
Your red herring arguments are too obvious.
I think that MK Ultra is making the point that the attacks against Israeli civilians were in response to Israeli attacks against Palestinian civilians.
It is a cycle of violence, with Israel constantly upping the ante.
Another way of saying this is found in Hosea 8:7: "They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind."
--
The death toll of both military and civilians in 2000-2006 is estimated to be 3,651 Palestinians and 1007 Israelis.
But I think you're right, it's important to acknowledge the reason Israel is building the illegal wall. Ostensibly to protect Israeli civilians from Palestinian attacks, the building of the wall, as revealed by its route through Palestinian farms and villages, is primarily to steal even more Palestinian land and to further destroy the ability of Palestinians to survive. The wall is just another prong in Israel's policy of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians from their own land.
I think we should acknowledge, too, that the Palestinians have a right to defend themselves. I have as much sympathy for Israeli "civilians" who are killed or injured after stealing and "settling" on Palestinian land as I do for home invaders who are killed or injured in the commission of their crimes. What is the difference?
I often drive past a farm that I would really like to have. And I think that God wants me to have it. Unfortunately, if I attacked the family living there, driving them off their property, and moved my family into their house, I could not count on the local police to look the other way. And if that family's friends and relatives attacked me, I'm sorry to say that I would get no sympathy around here. So it's hard for me, and most of the world, to understand why Israel is getting away with crime after crime after crime.
Alternatively, the Israelis could have stopped killing Palestinians, stealing their land and water, destroying their crops, building illegal settlements, building roads that only Jews are allowed to use, etc. That, too, would have stopped Palestinian attacks.
And before anyone replies with the tired formula that attacks would continue because (some) Palestinians want to eradicate the state of Israel - that goal is unachievable. Just as the IRA's goal of achieving a united Ireland through terrorism was never realistic, and eventually they stopped their "armed struggle".
Many of the Palestinian "attacks" have come from children throwing rocks and the response has been gunshot to the head.
Instead of changing the subject and dodging the question, how about answering the questions about the APARTHEID WALL?
Do you think you can do that?
Or is that a losing argument for you?
That's BS and you know it, we aint that stupid and we don't watch Fox news for our information. Coming up with excuses for Apartheid? You sound like Maggie Thather trying to justify her support for Apartheid South Africa.
There is no excuse for imperialism, racism, ethnic cleansing, and Jewish White Supremacy.
Don't address the question to the rabidly racist imperialist blood monger Nuttyahoo. Address the question to those who support and finance Israel. The US Congress and the Emperor are the ones who need be targeted for protest.
The USA is the world's largest and most powerful rogue nation: we support Apartheid, ethnic cleansing, war crimes of other nations and we commit our own war crimes and crimes against humanity in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Honduras...
"The USA is the world's largest and most powerful rogue nation: we support Apartheid, ethnic cleansing, war crimes of other nations and we commit our own war crimes and crimes against humanity in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Honduras..."
"We" support it? Hell, "we" are guilty of all of it!
The American poet, Robert Frost, began his famous poem with the lines, "Something there is that doesn't love a wall..." That is true for political walls built in Berlin, true for apartheid walls built in Israel, and true for walls of racism erected in the American mind. Something there is that undermines these walls, and no amount of mending can keep them intact.
The real wall here is the wall of deception. Mostly ,the discussions about israel are about manipulation of the symptoms and seemingly isolated problems. This of course is exactly what Israel wants, confusing the world into believing, that if you fix the complexities then people will for get about the one issue that is unfixable, illegal occupation. I am talking about the original event ,when israel ,with the backing of England and the USA stole the land that they now call Israel. all countries involved in the negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians know that this core issue is unsolvable, so they just act as enablers of Israel's distractions, hoping that the problem will go away. It will go away for awhile, just after WW3.
sirios333 YOU GOT IT!
Dismantle the Zionist enterprise. Period!
Even this author shrinks from actually naming what Israel is doing. He writes, " ..Israel intends to annex territory that Palestinians want for an independent Palestinian state," but it would be more accurate to say, "Israel intends to continue and expand its ongoing theft of Palestinian land."
I have noticed that AP stories now use this strange construction, implying that the land in question is just up for grabs, somehow, instead of actually belonging to its owners, the Palestinians.
Beit Jala, land owned by the Palestinians. They will never get their land back.the Israelis built the biggest shopping mall in the middle east on that confiscated land, surrounded by billion dollar, gigantic for Jews only settlements, built on Seized lands and financed by US taxpayers. The ongoing criminal pattern continues, even to this day.Endorsed by OBOMBA and Zionist president Rahm Immanual
And to Mr. Obama:
"All in all you're just another brick in the wall . . ."
Nice lyrical quote, Obama can join Maggie Thatcher - she supported Apartheid in South Africa, and Obama supports Apartheid in Palestine. Their historical legacy shall be quite similar in that regard. Uncle O'Tomma obviosly don't give a toss about poor folks, black folks, brown folks, especially Palestinians
israel is now a rogue state. it's tearing up arab homes in jerusalem, so much so that 60,000 will soon be dispossessed. in retaliation for rocket attacks that kill a few israelis, it kills 800 palstinian civilians, blows up two buildings owned by the united nations, employs white phosphorous against civilian centers, and demolishes fields, crops, and basically anything that counts as infrastructure in the poor land of gaza. obama is too weak politically, and may be too weak tempermentally, to stand up to the israeli military and its political jaugernaut. i say politically, because congress has denounced the goldstone report as some kind of heresy. truth is that congress, by a 10 to 1 margin, decided to turn its back on israeli atrocities without calling goldstone to congreess. he's offered to appear, but they know this proud jurist would eat their lunch at any hearing. israel is simply the spoiled child of american largesse. premium dog food, no leash. since 1967, their expansionist policies have made it more difficult for the us to be an honest broker in the mideast, and our lack of good relations with the arab countries has, at times such as in the 1973 oil embargo, about wrecked our economy. no doubt the tensions in the mideast keep oil prices higher and prevent the us from using its leverage to moderate arab regimes. for there to be mideast peace, israel is going to have to return to its 1967 borders and forfeit the lands it seized in the surprise attack it launched in june of that year. it's also going to have to denuclearize. when it gives back the conquered territories it now illegally occupies, peace will break out. when it denuclearizes, we can make iran, pakistan, and maybe even india do the same. in return, the israelis, once inside their newly narrowed borders, would come under the american military shield. we should use every means at our disposal to rein in israel's excesses. world peace and our prosperity hang in the balance.
And the zionists killed about as many of their own citizens during the Gaza Holocaust as Hamas did in years of throwing exploding soup cans at the zionists occupying Palestine.
i don't see why israel just doesn't become our fifty-first state. oh, that's right, then it would have just two senators!
Yes, tear down that Apartheid wall Mr. Netanyahu.
And Mr. Obama
