An American Diplomat and a British Soldier Tell Their Leaders They Have No Clothes: No to the Afghanistan War Strategy
British Army Lance Corporal Joe Glenton faces court martial for refusing to return to Afghanistan. He defied a direct order by his commanding officer to not participate in the in the Saturday, October 24, 2009, Stop the War march in London.
Challenging his military command, Glenton told the 10,000 gathered for the march: "I expected to go to war but I also expected that the need to defend this country's interests would be legal and justifiable. I don't think this is too much to ask. It's now apparent that the conflict is neither of these and that's why I must make this stand.
"It
is distressing to disobey orders, but when Britain follows America in
continuing to wage war against one of the world's poorest countries, I
feel I have no choice. Politicians have abused the trust
of the army and the soldiers who serve, that's why I am compelled and
proud to march with the Stop The War Coalition today." (http://stopwar.org.uk/content/
On
the day that the United States suffered the greatest number of deaths
in its 8 year war in Afghanistan and in the month with the most
casualties, an American diplomat assigned in Afghanistan resigned. As one of three U.S. diplomats who resigned in March, 2009 in opposition to the Iraq war (http://www.govexec.com/
Six weeks ago, on September 10, 2009, U.S. diplomat Matthew Hoh sent a letter of resignation to the Director General of the State Department over his concern about the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan. Hoh had served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps and had one combat tour in Iraq as a Marine Corps Captain and a second tour in Iraq as a Department of Defense civilian.
Hoh, who had been in Afghanistan five months as the Senior Civilian Representative for the U.S. government is Zabal province, questioned "why and to what end" the United States is in Afghanistan. Hoh said that "Like the Soviets, we continue to secure and bolster a failing state while encouraging and an ideology and government unknown and unwanted by its people."... "The U.S. and NATO presence and operations in Pashtun valleys and villages, as well as Afghan army and police units that are led by non-Pashtun soldiers and police provide an occupation force against which an insurgency is justified." "The U.S. military presence in Afghanistan contributes greatly to the legitimacy and strategic message of the Pashtun insurgency."
Hoh described the Afghan government as corrupt and said "Our support for this kind of government, coupled with a misunderstanding of the insurgency's true nature, reminds me horribly of our involvement with South Vietnam; an unpopular and corrupt government we backed at the expense of our nation's own internal peace, against an insurgency we arrogantly and ignorantly mistook as a rival to our own Cold War ideology."
He commented that the US support "for the Afghan government in its current form continues to distance the people from their government. The Afghan government's failings, particularly when weighed against the sacrifice of American lives and dollars appear legion and metastatic:
--Glaring corruption and unabashed graft;
--A President whose confidants and chief advisers comprise drug lords and war crimes villains, who mock our own rule of law and counternarcotics efforts;
--A system of provincial and district leaders constituted of local power brokers, opportunists and power brokers allied with the United States solely for, and limited by, the value of our USAID and CERP contracts and whose own political and economic interests stand nothing to gain from any positive or genuine attempts at reconciliation, and;
--The
recent electoral process dominated by fraud and discredited by low
voter turnout, which created an enormous victory for our enemy who now
claims a popular boycott and will call into question worldwide our
government's military, economic and diplomatic support for an invalid
and illegitimate Afghan government." (http://www.washingtonpost.
Senior officials in the State Department including US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry and U.S. Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke tried to get Hoh to stay in the State Department arguing that if he "wanted to affect policy then he should be inside the state Department, not outside, where you can get a lot of attention but you won't have the same political impact." Holbrook even said that he "agreed with much of Hoh's analysis, although not his conclusion that the war wasn't worth the fight."
On Friday, October 23, Hoh decided not to remain in the State Department and made his resignation effective on that date saying he had decided
to speak out publicly because "I want people in Iowa, people in
Arkansas, people in Arizona, to call their congressman and say,
'Listen, I don't think this is right." (http://www.guardian.co.uk/
I was in Afghanistan three weeks ago, returning for the first time since I helped reopen the US Embassy in Kabul in December, 2001. Eight years ago I had hopes that a short term United States presence might help the Afghan people out of the cycle of violence and that roads, schools and clinics could be built quickly before our "welcome" was worn out. The Bush administration's diversion to invade and occupy Iraq short-circuited those hopes.
Now
eight years later, there is little security in the country, despite
100,000 international troops, including 68,000 U.S. military, plus
90,000 U.S. trained Afghan soldiers. According to a
senior Army logistics officer, Afghanistan's roads are mined by
insurgents forcing 180 U.S. military outposts to be resupplied by
helicopters. "We don't have freedom of movement on the ground," a senior Army logistics officer says. "We're
resupplying between 30% and 40% of our forward operating bases by air because we just can't get to them on the ground." (http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/
In the three weeks since I left Afghanistan, on October 8, a suicide bomber drove unimpeded on the "secure" road in front of the Indian Embassy and exploded the car killing 17 and wounding 76. In July, 2008, another car bomber killed 41 and injured 139 at the gates of Indian Embassy.
Today,
on October 28, 2009, Taliban gunmen dressed in old police uniforms came
into a United Nations guest house in Kabul and killed six UN staff and
wounded nine other UN employees. Six Afghans including three attackers were killed. Also,
today, rockets hit the Serena hotel used by many international visitors
in Kabul and the Presidential Palace, but no casualties have been
reported. On September 17, 2009, a suicide car bomber
killed six Italian soldiers and 10 Afghan civilians on one of Kabul's main roadways. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/
When senior policy makers will not be honest with decision makers, sometimes it's the more junior government employees who have the strength of character and courage to tell their Presidents and Prime Ministers when they and their policies have no clothes.
Matthew Hoh and Lance Corporal Joe Glenton have proven to be voices of conscience for us all.

Show AllReminds me of the scenario in "A Clockwork Orange".
I the end the authorities end up spoon feeding (literally) the criminal after they did everything they could to terrorize him.
Instead of making the criminal insignificant, our war against them only puts them in the spotlight in a positive way.
in the Meantime --American "lawmakers" are now sponsoring a bill to
Declare VENEZUELA as a "STATE SPONSOR OF TERRORISM"
becooozzzzzz -- Venezuela deals with IRAN..
o well of course this is the prelude to making "lawful" American STATE TERRORISM against venezuela
COZ
VENEZUELA TURNED LEFTIE! and won't allow America to USE ITS CORPORATE TERRORISM on venezuelans....period!
==================
Lawmakers want Venezuela named a state sponsor of terrorism
By Michael O'Brien - 10/28/09 02:31 PM ET
A bipartisan pair of lawmakers introduced a resolution on Wednesday to classify Venezuela as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Rep. Ron Klein (D-Fla.), a member of the Foreign Affairs committee, and Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.), the ranking member of the Western Hemisphere subcommittee, joined together to float a bill calling on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to add Venezuela to the list of states which sponsor terrorism.
The resolution, H.Res.872, cites the Venezuelan government's ties to Iran, Hezbollah, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC) as examples of the South American nation's support for terrorism.
"The evidence linking Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez to the FARC and Hezbollah – two of the most dangerous terrorist organizations, responsible for many bombings, kidnappings, killings and drug trafficking – is overwhelming," Mack said in a statement announcing the resolution.
"Naming Venezuela a state sponsor of terrorism will strengthen the stability of the region," the Florida Republican, who has long been a vocal critic of Chavez, added. "The Administration must not turn a blind eye to Chavez’s dangerous aggression and must add Venezuela to the state sponsors of terrorism list without delay.”
"Venezuela’s assistance to the FARC in Colombia destabilizes the region and places the Chavez regime squarely outside the international community," Klein said. "This legislation seeks to stop Venezuela’s facilitation of terrorism now. The United States cannot and will not accept such actions taking place so close to home.”
The resolution was referred to the Foreign Affairs committee for consideration.
of course the REAL story here is:
IF AMERICA SPONSORS RIGHTWING brutal Dictatorships in Service of American Corporate , Money and War Racketeering....including disappearing people ......it's called "Democracy"....
but if Venezuala says "we are socialists" - it's "destabilizing the world"...
the World of AMERICAN DICTATORSHIP STATE and CORPORATE TERRORISM, that is...isn't it amazing ? isn't it just breathlessly IMPRESSIVE - how american "lawmakers" lack ANY sense of irony?........aaaaahhhhmazing....and they're actually doing it for all the world to see.........mighty impressive consistency, that.....
THE USA is now reported to be Offering to
"PAY THE TALIBAN TO SWITCH SIDES".......
er........isn't that BRIBERY?.......
i mean -- the USA has for at least TEN YEARS used its Magaphones all over the world to declare the Taliban "ENEMIES"....-- and that just this year -- the New American Emperor declared "WE WILL DEFEAT THEM"....
meaning they ARE "enemies"....
so isn't "PAYING THE TALIBAN TO SWITCH SIDES" (from whose side anyway? the TALIBAN's side?) -
the same as :
"Look taliban -- We will PAY you if you LET US WIN"...?
If any of us were an Afghan citizens being invaded by the CIA and similar drug dealing thugs we would without a doubt join the resistance. We would then be labeled by the US military as terrorists or enemy compatants. O should stop dithering, declare "mission impossible" and get out.
But are we not, many of us, American citizens living under the control of the same thugs?
For a lead to the absurdity buried in the foundations that is mentioned earlier, we need look at the propaganda of the Second World War and the results.
Step one:
Since 1948, Americans believe they were the victors. But in reality, America first prepared carefully and then rode on the back of the massive deaths and sacrifices of the other allies. Moreover America profited handsomely from the activity. Easy conclusion. Easy money. Easy fame. Hollywood, the continuation of the wartime propaganda unit, trumpets it consistently. And then there is something terrifically exciting about sending the heroes out to Just Go Get It while everyone is made to believe it is for THEIR good. Pioneering spirit. Apple Pie. Heroes are made! Cowboys and crooks! Mickey Mouse! War is wonderful. And of course Competition is War and War is Profit.
Step two:
But the record gets scratched and progress is needed. Accordingly now there is a new idea. The great prophets, good guys Obama/Bushco emerge from the conclave after generating and watching a myriad Rambo movies and boldly proclaim that 'War is Peace'. The perpetual war is born: Jeeesus Saves! US against the rest. You are either with us or against us. And! Of course as with Israel, everybody is against US, because we are the truth and the light.
The rest of us wet our pants with laughter but think it is no joke. The above large colony of nuts in our midst think they are nothing short of--aaaah---either the Second Coming or the First Coming 'but no worry, no worry: differences will be sorted out when the rest are put firmly in their place'.
The very foundation of monotheistic Judeo Christianity is woven into the fabric of this current absurdity as it is woven into the fabric of the English language and western culture.
Sorry for the simplification but there is an undeniable core of validity in this little tale. Major American politicians have warned about it and we need only look at the last sixty years to see that the Second World War has never ended.
Break the house down and see the pattern emerge from the rubble. It is striking. The Billy Goat Gruff, that distinctively bearded Uncle Sam we all know has roots in the foundations coming from the centre of a pentagon.
Send our President an email that tells him that Afghanistan = "tar baby"!
Bush used to say "we don't talk to the terrorists".
Well If we did, we could end the war, bring our troops home and clean up our own back yard.
Bush told the truth for once in his life when he said: " we don't talk to terrorists". In order to do that he would have to talk to himself!
Precisely!!
WE are the terrorists.
The actions of the Americans are terrifyingly stupid but Americans are not terrorists. There is no such thing. It is a peabrained PSYOPS word. Americans are people like all of us including Bin Laden out here.
But the psychotic structures of society Americans live in are the reality that terrifies us all out here.
The 'back yard' mentioned earlier, as in need of a clean-up, is a whitewash of the reality.
America needs to dig up the house and look seriously at the foundations. There is a monstrous absurdity buried in amongst them somewhere.
No we aren't terrorists but our actions are!
"No to the Afghanistan War Strategy," she wrote.
How about "No to the Afghanistan War" -- without qualification?
- How about "No to the Afghanistan War" -- without qualification? -
As a political strategy this is a dead-end. CodePink's and MoveOn's recent futile efforts should be enough to convince you of that.
Continuing to call for the unachievable will continue to fail, as it has failed for over 8 years. I suggest a different strategy, a different approach.
There is no Afghanistan War. There is only the war against the terrorists, and that takes place globally, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Africa and even the US Homeland.
I ask again that we try to end the war, not just try to convince enough Americans to withdraw from one battlefield, but not the others.
No post on Afghanistan is complete w/o reference to the TAPI pipeline. To omit this main motivation is to deny the force that directs all of our foreign policy and guarantees similar fiascos in the future. (Witness the phony "news" coverage of the S. Ossetia invasion by our client state, Georgia. One more pipeline route we're cultivating.) Big Money, banks, oil companies, et al, determine what we do. The "president" of Afghanistan is a perfect example. He is a Unocal executive and he's not a "president", an elected position (he was appointed... by us). He's what the Persian Empire called a "satrap", the British Empire called a "viceroy". Yet the 5 groups of Big Money propagandists ("News" media) refer to him, without irony, as "president". This nonsensical notion that "we've blundered again" is a cover story. We know what we're doing. And the conversation on sites like this should reflect that.

There's a typo in the 4th graph, Ann Wright resigned in March of 2003, not 2009.
For those who don't already know, Wright was a retired army officer, Lt Col, that had a second career in the State Department doing Embassy security in places like Afghanistan, Mongolia, Khazakstan, et cetera. She was one of three Diplomats that resigned in protest of Bush's launch of the War on Iraq.
And today they are joined by the notorious war hawk Thomas Friedman who, for once, cannot see any light at the other end of the Afghan tunnel and, in essence, advocates taking our armed forces out of Afghanistan. Today the voices warning President Obama that his adventurism in Afghanistan will make him Bush II are much more varied than in 2002 on Iraq. President Obama and his minions cannot claim in the future that they acted "on what they thought was reliable information". They have tons of warning from an amazing array of experts and analysts.
If President Obama is waiting for the results of the coming Kabuki-elections in Afghanistan he is sadly irresponsible. If Karzai wins Obama is stuck with damaged goods. If his opponent wins there will be enhanced civil war of Tajik vs. Pashtun. That is a lose-lose situation.
NATO is waiting for the elections, in order to decide whether to surge more troops into Afghanistan.
The US (Mr. Obama) is waiting for NATO, before announcing America's next surge.
Yes, Mr. Friedman is all for Mr. Obama taking all the responsibility for such a drastic step. As soon as things go wrong, and they will, Mr. Obama will be politcally eviscerated.
locust, right you are about Obama taking it in the shorts when the fit hits the shan.
Obama had better start practicing LBJ's "I will not run and will not accept the nomination of my party ..."
This EMPIRE needs a much harsher fascist figure-head than the O man to lower the boom on insurrection abroad and right here at home --- as it will be flaring to real revolt and rebellion in the streets by 2012 (or sooner).
