New Rule: If America Can't Get it Together, We Lose the Bald Eagle
New Rule: If America can't get its act together, it must lose the bald eagle as our symbol and replace it with the YouTube video of the puppy that can't get up. As long as we're pathetic, we might as well act like it's cute. I don't care about the president's birth certificate, I do want to know what happened to "Yes we can." Can we get out of Iraq? No. Afghanistan? No. Fix health care? No. Close Gitmo? No. Cap-and-trade carbon emissions? No. The Obamas have been in Washington for ten months and it seems like the only thing they've gotten is a dog.
Well, I hate to be a nudge, but why has America become a nation that can't make anything bad end, like wars, farm subsidies, our oil addiction, the drug war, useless weapons programs - oh, and there's still 60,000 troops in Germany - and can't make anything good start, like health care reform, immigration reform, rebuilding infrastructure. Even when we address something, the plan can never start until years down the road. Congress's climate change bill mandates a 17% cut in greenhouse gas emissions... by 2020! Fellas, slow down, where's the fire? Oh yeah, it's where I live, engulfing the entire western part of the United States!
We might pass new mileage standards, but even if we do, they wouldn't start until 2016. In that year, our cars of the future will glide along at a breathtaking 35 miles-per-gallon. My goodness, is that even humanly possible? Cars that get 35 miles-per-gallon in just six years? Get your head out of the clouds, you socialist dreamer! "What do we want!? A small improvement! When do we want it!? 2016!"
When it's something for us personally, like a laxative, it has to start working now. My TV remote has a button on it now called "On Demand". You get your ass on my TV screen right now, Jon Cryer, and make me laugh. Now! But when it's something for the survival of the species as a whole, we phase that in slowly.
Folks, we don't need more efficient cars. We need something to replace cars. That's what's wrong with these piddly, too-little-too-late half-measures that pass for "reform" these days. They're not reform, they're just putting off actually solving anything to a later day, when we might by some miracle have, a) leaders with balls, and b) a general populace who can think again. Barack Obama has said, "If we were starting from scratch, then a single-payer system would probably make sense." So let's start from scratch.
Even if they pass the shitty Max Baucus health care bill, it doesn't kick in for 4 years, during which time 175,000 people will die because they're not covered, and about three million will go bankrupt from hospital bills. We have a pretty good idea of the Republican plan for the next three years: Don't let Obama do anything. What kills me is that that's the Democrats' plan, too.
We weren't always like this. Inert. In 1965, Lyndon Johnson signed
Medicare into law and 11 months later seniors were receiving benefits.
During World War II, virtually overnight FDR had auto companies making
tanks and planes only. In one eight year period, America went from
JFK's ridiculous dream of landing a man on the moon, to actually landing a man on the moon.
This generation has had eight years to build something at Ground Zero.
An office building, a museum, an outlet mall, I don't care anymore. I'm
tempted to say that, symbolically, all America can do lately is keep
digging a hole, but Ground Zero doesn't represent a hole. It is a hole.
America: Home of the Freedom Pit. Ironically, it's spitting distance
from Wall Street, where they knock down buildings a different way -
through foreclosure.
That's the ultimate sign of our lethargy: millions thrown out of their homes, tossed out of work, lost their life savings, retirements postponed - and they just take it. 30% interest on credit cards? It's a good thing the Supreme Court legalized sodomy a few years ago.
Why can't we get off our back? Is it something in the food? Actually, yes. I found out something interesting researching last week's editorial on how we should be taxing the unhealthy things Americans put into their bodies, like sodas and junk foods and gerbils. Did you know that we eat the same high-fat, high-carb, sugar-laden shit that's served in prisons and in religious cults to keep the subjects in a zombie-like state of lethargic compliance? Why haven't Americans arisen en masse to demand a strong public option? Because "The Bachelor" is on. We're tired and our brain stems hurt from washing down French fries with McDonald's orange drink.
The research is in: high-fat diets makes you lazy and stupid. Rats on an American diet weren't motivated to navigate their maze and once in the maze they made more mistakes. And, instead of exercising on their wheel, they just used it to hang clothes on. Of course we can't ban assault rifles - we're the first generation too lazy to make its own coffee. We're the generation that invented the soft chocolate chip cookie: like a cookie, only not so exhausting to chew. I ask you, if the food we're eating in America isn't making us stupid, how come the people in Carl's Jr. ads never think to put a napkin over their pants?

Show AllI want to be just like this man when 'I grow up'.
Thanks, 'sweet William' for an excellent article.
Now if just an even small portion of the American Population can over come the obvious case of "CRIS"* they suffer from; they alone can offer some hope for the future of the USA and the Planet.
I hope you can 'pull it out' America, and soon.
* "CRIS" is an acronym for a "pseudo medical condition" known collectively, and internationally to inflict humanity all through history, and even now as we all 'live and breath',i.e. "Cranial Rectal Insertion Syndrome"---can be cured; the afflicted simply needs to 'PULL IT OUT'.
I personally have seen that remedy work time and time again.
NativeSon, MR. Maher must have put you in a kind mood today, just kidding, i actually enjoy the lambasting you give to Amerika. In regards to your "pull it out " solution, i am convinced that when given a choice people will choose something familiar ,even though uncomfortable, as opposed to more comfort and less familiarity. many will not be able to make the internal transition necessary to be in harmony with nature and the planet. good riddance to those who think they are superior to the compassionate being we call earth.
"i am convinced that when given a choice people will choose something familiar ,even though uncomfortable, as opposed to more comfort and less familiarity."
I can sort of see what you mean by that but the trick to that is to make the uncomfortable one look "comfortable" and pretend "change".
"piddly, too-little-too-late half-measures"
Obama & Co. are really starting to remind me of pro football. Pro football is utterly boring. Both teams run the same basic plays over and over. Maybe they gain a yard or two. Occasionally someone runs for a touchdown, just enough to keep things semi-entertaining. But even that gets repetitive.
I once asked a friend why it was that no pro-teams ever did anything innovative. Why is everything "piddly, too-little-too-late half-measures"? His answer lit the light: it's all about money. The owners don't want to anything iffy since it might endanger winning. If they lose, they lose advertising, ticket sales, etc. It's all about the money and very little to do with the game itself, the fans, even the players.
The question is, who in America are "the owners"? I personally don't think it's corporations per se, but some other layer above that. After all, if you have all the money, why would you focus on getting more? You'd focus on some other agenda.
One percent of Americans own almost half the countries wealth. This is double the wealth-concentration of 30 years ago. The problem with this level of wealth concentration is it allows the 'owner' of a corporation to recuse himself from caring about its profitability. The goal of all investment is to make enough money that one doesn't have to work for a living (btw, working for love is not working 'for a living'). So a millionaire needs a 10% annual return to avoid working, while a ten-millionaire only needs a 1% return. But to make a 10% return you really have to THINK about where you are putting your money: such investors make better investments, and money goes where its actually profitable (into new and useful ideas rather than basic utilities). Hence, as wealth concentrates, investors become lax about their investments: thats just human nature. And the entire economy suffers. Worse, it allows corporate managements to hijack the company for their own gain. The best way for a CEO to make money in such an environment is to downsize the company for short term profits, convince investors that this means he's worth a multi-million dollar golden parachute, and then bail out before the longterm sh*t hits the proverbial fan. The classic example of this is Sunbeam corporation, but lately there are more examples than you can imagine.
I believe in wealth redistribution via progressive taxation, not only because it helps out the working people more, but because it forces investors to make better investments: to think about the decisions management is making rather than take a back seat. There's no question that in WallStreet managements have taken over their companies for their own personal gain. Investors own the company, but they are getting stiffed along with the taxpayer, because they gave up power. But they gave it up in part because they DON'T care: they are filthy rich whether the company makes money or not. Capitalism just doesn't work well if investors don't care about their investments. That 'caring' is at the core of how capitalism is supposed to work.
Right, who are the shareholders that the board of directors report to?
Hey Bill. What you talking about?
People are getting off their asses. They're protesting Socialism, Fascism, Communism, Islamofascism, and whatever the ism du jour. Boasting about making a statement about the freedom to wave their assault weapons in the air as they clutch the Bible with an American flag book cover, in the other hand.
They've been out there holding signs with Obama as the man of the world.
Germany, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, he belongs to them all. They've been free to march untethered to reality, vowing to tow the corporate line and continue to fight against their own best interests.
On the other hand right now in Pittsburgh, peace protestors need a permit to just stand on the sidewalk or risk getting pepper sprayed. Protestors against global warming are thrown in jail, and National Guard troops are yanking pro labor marchers and throwing them to the ground just for the fun of it.
American media loves the birthers and other corporate tool. Unless there's some trumped up rioting going on, the media isn't interested in the voices for social justice and humanity.
Wonder why that is?
Maher: "[We] must lose the bald eagle as our symbol and replace it with the YouTube video of the puppy that can't get up. As long as we're pathetic, we might as well act like it's cute."
Or how about the elderly women from the LifeCall commercial 'Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!'
But, if there is a motto for this current age of angrily confused American 'individualism', it's "keep your government hands off my Medicare!"
Runner up motto would be: "I AM AMERICA! (And so can you)"
Ah Bill, you're awake--but you can get madder than that--do it! Scream to the rooftops--let your voice be heard across this depressed nation--it's worst than you can imagine--it's more like a dead dog--than a cute puppy--we need a freaking miracle. Right now we have half the nation in a stupor thinking that things are changing--it's just gonna take time--well it's gonna take a lot more than time--it's gonna take guts and stamina to go against the power that is guiding this nation down the path that our supposed enemy the crazy from Iran has so eloquently pointed out in his recent UN speech, and this guy ain't like our guy--he don't drink, smoke, lie, or do dope, like our guy--but I trust him--the other day I believed almost everything that was on the fake Osama Bin Laden tape--that means any day now they probably will come looking for me and accuse me of siding with the terrorist--well fuck them 'cause I don't drink, smoke, lie or do dope--well I never inhaled--anyway I don't drink or smoke. But I was a good student in college and I read and think a lot--In fact I think that if we don't start shaping up and change our leadership we are all fucked. So I'm asking you man to man, will you please come to DC next week to hash things out--I'll bring the hash.
Bill Maher, makes some good points.Ben Franklin preferred the Wild Turkey as the National (Bird)/symbol.I think today it is a more appropriate symbol.Clucking and Gobbling picking and scratching, you can't Soar with the Eagles if you are roosting with Turkeys.Old Ben thought most Eagles were just scavengers, where Turkeys were a colorful resourceful lot.
I haven't seen the You-tube puppy video as my "puter" is slower than a talking drum and not as user friendly as a smoke signal, but his piece is probably unfair to the pup.Cool post Bill I feel your angst! peas in
actually the bald eagle is an appropriate symbol....most of the time it doesn't hunt for itself...it waits for some other animal to make a kill and then comes in like a bully and takes it from them.....as I said a perfect symbol of the country today.....
Right, mtdon,Raptor as .. thief!Bald Eagles like to steal fish from Ospreys,Golden Eagles not so much.I enjoy watching them, except when they latch onto carrion like vultures. peace
The bald eagle is a particularly apt emblem these days, for a different reason: it is a vicious predator that attacks from the air.
" 'What kills me is that that's the Democrats' plan, too."
Bill, Bill, Bill. You're so funny!
Mr. Maher,
Please stick to writing half assed jokes instead of pointing out what is sticking us in the ass (ie- corporate america).
Please keep your topics to appropriate issues, something that includes Paris Hilton and Darth Vader. Your job is to entertain us, like the rest of mainstream media.
The pain and suffering of society; the failing environment; the continuous wars; lack of single payer health care are all issues that don't matter as much as entertainment.
Do your job, keep us distracted. It really doesn't take that much effort on your part. Just let us have our beer, the occasional pretend vote every four years, and limitless channels on TV.
Life is beautiful.

Brilliant ramble, Mr. Maher. Everything you touch on is so true.
"So let's start from scratch."
Yeah! Damn right!
Bill, if you weren't a Zionist, you'd be perfect.
Bill, some people are wide awake and doing all they can to get word out the pandemic no one is noticing is a MILITARY AGENDA meant to end the US as constitutional country. No joke. All set up by Bush and Cheney and none of it revoked by OBushma.
Obama and the G-20 are getting ready to set up a New World Order, complete with crashing the economy world wide, forcing it onto a single currency and using the artificially created pandemic to generate an emergency as a pretext to undo democracies worldwide.
Got to http://www.theflucase.com and see what they are doing already to put this in motion.
The left is asleep. They are weeks from this unless it is exposed.

“Today America would be outraged if UN troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there was an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all people of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well being granted to them by the World Government.”
- Henry Kissinger, 1991 Bilderberg Conference.
“We are on the verge of global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will accept the new world order.”
- David Rockefeller
"The American Republic is in remnant status. The stage is set for our country to devolve into a military dictatorship, and few seem to care."
- Ron Paul
Sarkozy has been planning a fascist take over of his own country but no one at the G-20 is saying a word, not even protestors.
http://coto2.wordpress.com/2009/09/10/judges-report-france-to-use-swine-flu-to-commit-liberticide/
Obama is planning the same here. Why do you think he has keep extended detention, torture, Blackwater, and all Bush's orders that set that up?
http://coto2.wordpress.com/2009/09/10/judges-report-france-to-use-swine-flu-to-commit-liberticide/
Has anyone actually heard this Kissinger tape-the mysterious Swiss delegate could post it online. Alex Jones may have forged the quote. The U.S has been undermining the U.N for years by vetoes, not paying dues and deriding it as a debate club. When the leaders talk about a New World Order they're talking about U.S hegemony and corporate globalization. Even without subsidies and tariffs free markets result in concentration of wealth/power to people like Rockefeller-that's why Ron Paul would be a disaster. Libertarians should love Blackwater as privatized law enforcement. I'm sure a lot of you guys are nice people but you sound like gullible paranoids.
Einstein supported relinquishing sovereignty to international institutions. As long as a world govt. has a constitution that's as good or better as the U.S one I do too. We can't even come to a consensus about genocide?
as long as we're starting from scratch, let's stay naked...
Want to get people off their lazy asses and onto the steps of their local city hall, county commission building, state capital?? GET THE FEDS TO END THE ENDLESS UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS THAT THEY KEEP EXTENDING TO KEEP THE RABBLE QUIET.
I met a few Obama supporters recently who sited Obama is doing a good job...he has extended their unemployment benefits they told me! Yeah....good for that person...I got NOTHING FROM THAT CORPORATE FUCKER.
I say.....end all the social programs and all the lazy folks who voted for Obama will do what we who didn't (on the left) vote for him are doing NOW.....GO OUT AND PROTEST, WRITE LETTERS...AND BASICALLY MAKE OUR POLITICIANS LIVES HELL!!!
Now you're talking. That's the Bill maher we all know and love. I almost thought Obama-itis got him too....
Maher is ok, as far as a media corporation whore can go.
You want real comedian rage and rant, dead on criticism of modern life, watch some vintage George Carlin or Billy Connoly. (youtube it)
Hell, even Chris Rock is better than this ABCCBSNBCCNN milquetoast...
Walk in peace.
Or Bill Hicks!
George Carlin was a great comedian.
BUT.... he DEFINITELY had a side of him that was Right-Wing.
He was not a CONSISTENT liberal by any stretch.
I've noticed that Bill Maher is strongly liberal when he writes. But, when he hosted his HBO show, with many guests to fit in, he was more diplomatic and seemed more middle-of-the-road.
By-the-way, middle-of-the-road (Centrist) is what President Obama actually is.
Give me a Dennis Kucinich or Ralph Nader or Barbara Boxer any day, rather than a "Centrist" like Obama. Bill Maher is closer to a Kucinich than an Obama.
And....... Bush, McCain, etc. are WAAAAAYY to the Right.
It was common for George Carlin to say things that fit in with the views of a Bush or McCain or a Libertarian. Carlin wasn't quite as Liberal as you say, Galenwainwright.
Maher is an Israeli apologist and trash-mouths Muslims every chance he gets. I've read his stuff; he's entertaining enough on the tube but as with most pop entertainers his writing reveals no depth. Carlin, on the other hand...
Watch Maher's response as we start beating the war drums for Iran, that should be interesting.
"We might pass new mileage standards, but even if we do, they wouldn't start until 2016. 2016!"
It's astonishing! Yes, my '76 Rabbit got 39 miles to the gallon. When my Rabbit went to car heaven I went to a '71 bug that got 26 miles to the gallon, and then my dad's 10-year-old '84 Prelude at about the same mileage, and today I drive an '87 Cabriolet that looks like a Rabbit but gets around 26 miles to the gallon.
So, folks, we've known how to build cars that get decent mileage for quite a few years, and we already have many models that get 35 mpg today. We should be mandating 50 mpg at least by this point. But that is really dreaming.
If the only thing they've gotten is a dog they should call it 'NO' rather than Bo.
Righteous, Bill, thanks. Man, amp it up a bit so Obama can hear you _ he's asleep at the wheel. Follow in the bold footsteps of Lenny Bruce. Be vulgar, be loud. For the next father or mother who loses his or her employment, for the next family who loses its home or life savings, there is no 'long run.' Rage it up, Bro. Sincerely, Bill, thanks.
Nanoo
Here, Here, we don't deserve the image of the bald eagle- a predator drone reflects this country.
Yes!
The U.S. government & much of our citizens' thinking has become so twisted. (I loved it when, recently, Thom Hartmann said this too, about this topic.) If we cut our military budget back to just slightly above whichever country is second (not sure of whether it is Russia, China, Britain or ?) instead of what it is now.... as much as all other countries combined, we could have a FANTASTIC country.
It is so sad that Dwight Eisenhower was more liberal than Bill Clinton, regarding both the economy in general and the military in particular. That's how far to "The Right" "we" have moved in 50 years.
Yes, our country, as a whole, has become mentally very twisted.
Dennis Kucinich is wonderful. He advocated for a Department of Peace to offset the Department of Defense.
One last thought.... Why is it that countries such as Denmark and Sweden have a much, MUCH smaller military than us, yet are not cowards AND are not being attacked AND don't feel so afraid that they need to attack others?
Yet America does!?!?
I agree with much of it but unfortunetly it's coming from someone who's to stupid to understand how a vaccine works and thinks that Polio went away on it's own. I like Bill but he's really dissappointed with all the woo-woo stuff.
BILL MAHER:
YOU ARE RIGHT ON. EVERYONE SHOULD GET THIS ANGRY.
TURN YOUR ANGER INTO A VOTE FOR THE RIGHT PERSON NEXT TIME.
DENNIS KUCINICH!
SINGLE PAYER MEDICARE FOR ALL
END TO WAR
END TO WELFARE FOR THE RICH
ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS
END TO TORTURE
END NAFTA, WTO
VOTE FOR DENNIS KUCINICH WHO HAS CONSISTENTLY VOTED FOR US!
Bill's wrong. The bald eagle is the perfect symbol for the US because, like the US, it will probably go extinct in the near future.
Bill Maher, you are getting better and better!
(Thom Hartmann, Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinich are "gods" in my opinion, and Bill Maher you are not far behind.)
I agree with most of everything that you wrote here.
We need to get the word out.... get factual information to, ideally, every American about these things.
BUT ABOVE ALL.......
1) All Americans need to be hyper-aware of when Right-Wingers say (or write) that they are afraid of "fill in the blank".... aware of how cowardly The Right Wing is.
2) We need to inform all of our fellow Americans that those in The Bush Administration have done more ACTUAL damage to America than anyone else EVER.
(And that President Obama and his Administration, though better, are doing much of the same.)
Isn't punishment through the judicial system supposed to be based upon the damage that one does? Since everyone now in prison has done less ACTUAL damage than The Bush Administration, shouldn't Eric Holder be indicting Bush, Cheney, Rove, Gonzales, etc. AND seeing to it that the Don Siegelman case is dismissed and the PROSECUTORS in Siegelman's case are the ones punished, along with Rove?
Maybe if Maher wasn't so religilous about trashing the 9-11 truth movement on national TV... And actually looked at the available evidence proving that the WTC was a controlled demolition and a psy-ops/ false flag event... then he wouldn't be asking such banal questions and making crass jokes...
He has contributed to the demonization and ridicule of "politically incorrect" views of the events that day and ever since, misleading millions of people into a false belief that "truthers" are crazy attention-seekers... You are the blind misleading the blind...
"And actually looked at the available evidence proving that the WTC was a controlled demolition and a psy-ops/ false flag event."
Really? I've yet to find this "evidence". What I've found is conspiracy theory drivel filled to the brim with cherry-picked and misrepresented, un-fact-checked "evidence". I am pretty sure this was also Maher's opinion.
If anyone is "religiously" doing anything, it's the 9-11 "truth" movement stubbornly refusing to stop making the left look stupid.
Grow some critical thinking abilities.
