Israel Lobby Defeats Freeman Appointment
The withdrawal of Chas Freeman as chairman of the National Intelligence Council, following two weeks of vituperative attacks on him by the amen chorus of the U.S. Zionist lobby is a black mark on the Obama administration.
As I wrote two weeks ago, when the campaign against Freeman began, if Barack Obama can't stand up to the likes of Marty Peretz, Jonathan Chait, Steve Rosen, and other snarky critics, and if the White House can't defend a critical intelligence pick when that person is savaged by Republican sharks smelling blood in the water, then how can we expect Obama to stand up to Bibi Netanyahu and his even more radical ally, Avigdor Lieberman, when they confront Obama over Middle East policy?
It's sad, and worrying.
Expect gloating in the pages of The New Republic, National Review, The Weekly Standard, at Fox News, in the corridors at the American Enterprise Institute and AIPAC, and in the right-wing and neocon blogs.
Joining in on the trashing of Freeman were the (let's face it) hard-line Jews of the Democratic Congress, including Senator Charles Schumer of New York, Rep. Steve Israel (yes, he is actually named "Israel") of New York, and of course, that former Democrat, Joe Lieberman -- all of whom crowded into the amen corner with AIPAC.
The Post, writing this morning about opposition to Freeman by seven Republican members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, quoted Freeman from 2007: "The brutal oppression of the Palestinians by the Israeli occupation shows no sign of ending. ... American identification with Israel has become total."
You can, apparently, believe anything but that.
Nearly four years ago, I interviewed Freeman about the disastrous appointment of Porter Goss as CIA director, who was installed by then-President Bush as a political watchdog over an agency that is supposed to speak truth to power. Goss, Freeman told me then, was sent to Langley to "impose a vision on [the CIA] that its analysts and operatives reject as simply not based on reality," he told me. "It's totalitarian. We are going to end up with an agency that is more right-wing, more conformist, and less prone to produce people with original views and dissenters."
I guess we know, now, that there's no room for dissenters in the intelligence community, now, either.
Late on Tuesday, Freeman issued the following statement:
To all who supported me or gave me words of encouragement during the controversy of the past two weeks, you have my gratitude and respect. You will by now have seen the statement by Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair reporting that I have withdrawn my previous acceptance of his invitation to chair the National Intelligence Council.
I have concluded that the barrage of libelous distortions of my record would not cease upon my entry into office. The effort to smear me and to destroy my credibility would instead continue. I do not believe the National Intelligence Council could function effectively while its chair was under constant attack by unscrupulous people with a passionate attachment to the views of a political faction in a foreign country. I agreed to chair the NIC to strengthen it and protect it against politicization, not to introduce it to efforts by a special interest group to assert control over it through a protracted political campaign.
As those who know me are well aware, I have greatly enjoyed life since retiring from government. Nothing was further from my mind than a return to public service. When Admiral Blair asked me to chair the NIC I responded that I understood he was "asking me to give my freedom of speech, my leisure, the greater part of my income, subject myself to the mental colonoscopy of a polygraph, and resume a daily commute to a job with long working hours and a daily ration of political abuse." I added that I wondered "whether there wasn't some sort of downside to this offer." I was mindful that no one is indispensable; I am not an exception. It took weeks of reflection for me to conclude that, given the unprecedentedly challenging circumstances in which our country now finds itself abroad and at home, I had no choice but accept the call to return to public service. I thereupon resigned from all positions that I had held and all activities in which I was engaged. I now look forward to returning to private life, freed of all previous obligations.
I am not so immodest as to believe that this controversy was about me rather than issues of public policy. These issues had little to do with the NIC and were not at the heart of what I hoped to contribute to the quality of analysis available to President Obama and his administration. Still, I am saddened by what the controversy and the manner in which the public vitriol of those who devoted themselves to sustaining it have revealed about the state of our civil society. It is apparent that we Americans cannot any longer conduct a serious public discussion or exercise independent judgment about matters of great importance to our country as well as to our allies and friends.
The libels on me and their easily traceable email trails show conclusively that there is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired, still less to factor in American understanding of trends and events in the Middle East. The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency and include character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth. The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors.
There is a special irony in having been accused of improper regard for the opinions of foreign governments and societies by a group so clearly intent on enforcing adherence to the policies of a foreign government - in this case, the government of Israel. I believe that the inability of the American public to discuss, or the government to consider, any option for US policies in the Middle East opposed by the ruling faction in Israeli politics has allowed that faction to adopt and sustain policies that ultimately threaten the existence of the state of Israel. It is not permitted for anyone in the United States to say so. This is not just a tragedy for Israelis and their neighbors in the Middle East; it is doing widening damage to the national security of the United States.
The outrageous agitation that followed the leak of my pending appointment will be seen by many to raise serious questions about whether the Obama administration will be able to make its own decisions about the Middle East and related issues. I regret that my willingness to serve the new administration has ended by casting doubt on its ability to consider, let alone decide what policies might best serve the interests of the United States rather than those of a Lobby intent on enforcing the will and interests of a foreign government.
In the court of public opinion, unlike a court of law, one is guilty until proven innocent. The speeches from which quotations have been lifted from their context are available for anyone interested in the truth to read. The injustice of the accusations made against me has been obvious to those with open minds. Those who have sought to impugn my character are uninterested in any rebuttal that I or anyone else might make.
Still, for the record: I have never sought to be paid or accepted payment from any foreign government, including Saudi Arabia or China, for any service, nor have I ever spoken on behalf of a foreign government, its interests, or its policies. I have never lobbied any branch of our government for any cause, foreign or domestic. I am my own man, no one else's, and with my return to private life, I will once again - to my pleasure - serve no master other than myself. I will continue to speak out as I choose on issues of concern to me and other Americans.
I retain my respect and confidence in President Obama and DNI Blair. Our country now faces terrible challenges abroad as well as at home. Like all patriotic Americans, I continue to pray that our president can successfully lead us in surmounting them.
I'll be updating this post during the week, so stay tuned.

Show AllDreyfuss blames Obama for not standing up to the Israeli Lobby. Well Freeman withdrew his nomination, he said, not because it could not be rammed through, but because the attacks, the "smear" campaign against him would follow him into office, would continue, be ramped up, and thus destroy his ability to do the job.
This is not Obama's work. This, as Freeman says, is a Smear & Attack campaign from Tel-Aviv that WON'T END, that was the key.
Obama did the right thing. He capitulated to stronger forces. AIPAC & Co. is more powerful that the POTUS.
I said it last week and it's true today. 100%.
Sharon was right. And here was a little reminder. We, America, bow down or get beaten down by The Jewish Country.
I do not like that, Joe.
Never forget that key positions of power in the U.S. government are held by people like Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, who are dual Israeli/U.S. citizens.
At haaretz.com today, from Israel, one of the big stories is that the U.S. will deliver $30 billion in aid to Israel over the next ten years no matter what our economy does!
And here is an article about Israel's new "soft war": a propaganda campaign they are beginning on the internet to improve Israel's image:
"This latest move came after Google refused to back down to Israeli demands not to show distressing images of war-torn Gaza."We've protested Google allowing photos of bombarded Gaza to be included in search results about Israel, but it has made it clear that users can upload any photo they please and that it has no control over it," said David Saranga, Consul for Media and Public Affairs at the Israeli Consulate in New York."

True, we're already seeing it with the zionist apologists that pop up on this board, whining about CD's relentless attacks on Jews.

“how can we expect Obama to stand up to Bibi Netanyahu and his even more radical ally, Avigdor Lieberman, when they confront Obama over Middle East policy?”
You must be joking. Obama having a confrontation with Israel, after having sworn fealty to aipac?
If you wanted a president that would end the blind support for the Israeli government, there were obvious options. (Hint: Do some research on the ones that didn't vow eternal loyalty to Israel)
Granted but then was then and now is now. We now have a handsome idealistic child for president. In a few short weeks he has made a boatload of weak decisions expanded the war front and kowtowed to the Israeli Lobby. I am beginning to believe that we have elected a charlatan for president just like Clinton. The only thing we have not had is a BJ in the oval office. Both of these Democrat presidents are children without guts or resolve. We had Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel available but caved into American Jewish media disinformation. The groundswell of extreme dissatisfaction with prominent Jews using their ill gotten gains to promote Zionist extremism is starting to push back on the Jewish media. This is a good thing.

Old but great book on Anti-Semitism: Antisemitism, Its History and Causes, 1894 By Bernard Lazare. It has a "surprise" ending.
It is far past time to castrate a lobbying group that purports to represent an ethnic group of people comprising < 3% of the US population. Less that half of that ethnic group agree with that lobbying group.
The government will not act. There must be a civil way to identify traitors working on behalf of a foreign power that consistently betrays our national interests and gloats about the stupidity of its people. I'm not proposing unlawful behavior, but am looking for a clever way to make the treason we are compelled to witness backfire on those who would betray our country.
Ideas?
"It is far past time to castrate a lobbying group . . . ."
Ah well. I doubt that most of these old bastards can get it up anyway without major infusions of drugs.
q
No idea. I just keep trying to get the word out, most people are clueless.
My idea is simple. Live like a miser for five years. If you can't do five, try just two. One year isn't enough. Don't go to a movie, restaurant, or anyplace else that you do not have to go to. We are 70% of GDP. The group that makes all the noise because they own the news outlets and buy our politicians get almost all their money to do these things from our shopping habits. Do you want to silence them? Make them poor. Politicians won't dance to their tune if the money dries up. Anything else, especially violence, will not work. They are ready for that and they really don't care about crowding the prisons with us. Frugality is Freedom!
And give some of the money you save to places like Common Dreams, Counterpunch, Antiwar, Buzzflash and This can't be happening, etc. We ARE getting there, folks.
"So likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation."

I am so grateful that Freeman didn't go out chastised, mealymouthing and backtracking. Now I want to see a few more people stand up and tell the truth about Israel. I am contacting Charles Schumer about the need to allow different viewpoints to be expressed in a democracy. I urge other New Yorkers to do the same.
Joe
So I imagine the job will go to Daniel Pipes.
No surprise here -- the criminally insane, behind-the-scenes gang of Zio-zealots who own Congress do NOT permit outsiders to assume high level intelligence positions.
Stay tuned, folks. The U.S./Israeli alliance from Hell hasn't even begun to show the world what they're capable of.
Yes, the pathologically criminally insane !

If election campaigns were publicly financed, it would diminish the influence of the Israel lobby.
Could Obama stand up to the Israel lobby now? I doubt it.
The frightening thing is that anyone with a knowledge of history can see where this is going. AIPAC and other tentacles of the Israel Lobby cannot be wholly separated from American Jews, no matter how many protest that it should be that way. Too many Jews in this country are silent, and most of the prominent ones support the Zionist thuggery loudly. So the ones that oppose this sort of thing will be tarred with the same brush.
There is a good reason so many Jewish immigrants to this country changed their names, and it wasn't because of difficult pronunciation.
In order for them to thwart the Freeman nomination, the zio roaches were forced into the light.
And a few more people can see who the real enemies of US are.
The harder the AIPAC pushes against actual moral integrity, the starker and more revealing it's despicable and wicked FACE is SEEN.
I'm glad we've seen move light about and ON this -- but the wanna be roaches ( they aspire to be bigger & more survivable ) -- haven't yet realized how blatantly counterproductive it is to tell Americans that they've been scammed, thwarted, and made fools of.
We can only hope that the Zionist hubris continues, as more Americans turn on more lights -- to see for themselves-- want an infestation of treasonist drek surround us.

I don't know how to say 'seig heil' in Hebrew - but I guess I'd better learn.
America, in my opinion has had a simple choice between two alternatives in respect of the undue influence of Zionists over their affairs ever since 9/11/2001:
1, Continue to bend over, assume the position, and pretend all this is in your own interest.
Or
2, Apply US laws and desist from providing material and financial aid to the terrorist state of Israel and independently investigate Israel’s involvement in 9-11.
Israel has been repeatedly shown to be involved in a vast covert operation of espionage, subterfuge and corruption in the US and possesses a clandestine nuclear arsenal estimated at 200 warheads or more meaning that any US military assistance provided to Israel is in contravention of America’s own undertaking in respect of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and the US’s own laws.
Israel has repeatedly launched wars of aggression against neighbours, using weapons and armaments supplied under US military aid against and intentionally targeting civilian populations, again in contravention of US laws. Also contrary to US interests and the interests of global peace and security Israel has repeatedly shown intent to militarily destabilise the region in its endless, land, and resources theft and is in perpetual breach of many UNSC resolutions concerning its illegal occupation and settlement of lands.
How Israel has not been investigated fully in connection with the events of 9-11 can only be understood in terms of the self same influence, intrigue and subversion that that country exerts on government, executive, and media in the US, when in fact just the historical example of the attempted sinking of the USS Liberty as a false flag event, meant at the time to be blamed on Egypt, provides ample evidence of the depths of devious conspiracy to which that country and its government is capable of going.
It is not uncalled for speculation to suggest that the immanent, ethnically racist, apartheid government of Israel has threatened to attack Iran, and can be counted on to use those nuclear weapons, possibly as “usable nukes” for deep land penetration. Such an act of aggression would potentially destabilise the entire region and far beyond to the extent of causing a catastrophic war, with global repercussions.
Israel’s threat on world peace is absolutely real. America’s responsibility must be obvious to any thinking person. The US position presently (see 1, above) must be embarrassing.
It wasn't too long ago that the 'amen corner' was a term restricted to the Buchanans and Sobrans, and now is being used by -- a Dreyfuss! from the Nation and the Rolling Stone.
Israel and the US are the chief reactionary forces in the world; the US having worked diligently to promote religious reaction within the Middle East & South Asian world as antidotes to the old Russian bear. After promoting the image of Afghani extremists as freedom fighters in the '80s, Hollywood went onto portray all people of non-Jewish semitic extraction as terrorists, the Hollywood studios always having been the largest exporter of "American" values. The more reprehensibly our symbiote behaves, the more Holocaust films are produced so that Israel can continue to use the skins of dead European Jews to hide their own swastistars.
No mean feat to accomplish in the course of three decades, to go from the Camp David accords to the chief suppliers of phosophorous & other weapons to a state that can put a Netanyahu and an Avigdor Liebermann in charge, and control the personnel in the executive branch of its host.
Everyday it gets just that much clearer that Israel and the US still plan a new extension of the war by attacking Iran and probably Syria as well. And yet sites like Common Dreams and all the other DP aligned kool aid drinker sites act as if they are deaf, dumb, and blind about what's coming our way. Very sad... An addiction to 'lesser of two evils' politics can be deadly.
Blair could nominate Chomsky or Zinn.

It is shame that our "representatives" Schumer, Israel, Feinstein... would engage in a dirty sabotage of a true American patriot. Why these senators care more about a foreign country than about America, the country where they live and whose taxpayers feed them...?
Why don't Schumer, Israel, Feinstein... put America first, especially in these challenging times?
Why such tribal instinct and behavior, more appropriate to a chimp than to well educated elected officials?
Why don't Schumer, Israel, Feinstein do what is best to protect American people? Who do they really represent?
Why is the mainstream media not talking about it - nowhere near how much time is devoted to earmarks and pork? Just did a Google search on "Chas Freeman". It seems that most discussion is highly controlled - I mean, how come so many people know so much about this guy all of a sudden? And mostly negative, that too?
It is not only the mainstream media but the blogs as well...Huffington Post, and Truthdig have eliminated any posting which goes to the core issues regarding Charles Freeman and his role as the opposite of Bernie Madoff. Madoff was extremely involved in the maintenance of "Jewish racial Purity" funding many "Jewish Charities" which were nothing more than extreme racist separatist organizations. Steve Rosen is under indictment for giving US military secrets to Israel and yet the Jewish media gives the guy carte blanche to extol the virtues of Zionist hatred against a peacemaker like Charles Freeman.
We have a huge problem in this country that must be fixed and they are not going to stop this horror on their own. The Israel Lobby is virulent. We must clean house starting with Charles Schumer, Rahm Emanuel, Abe Foxman, and Steve Israel. These people are "the WORST People in the World". Sharing a cell with their Uncle Bernie might get the full attention as to what changes good people want to see take place from now on. Freeman's loss was a huge setback.

So many make it sound like Israel controls the US government when exactly the opposite is what has been happening. It is American imperialism that has been propping up Israel all these years. It is the way American imperialism continues to have geopolitical influence in the Middle East, where surprisingly most of the world's oil resources lie buried under Arab sand.
What better way to keep these Arab nations terrorized then to have a crazy, illogical, push the button at any time, Zionist nation under the thumb of American imperialism? When the Empire cannot go forth and bomb an Arab nation, its proxy goes forth and does so in the name of "national security".
American imperialism takes its marching orders from the capitalist elites, as does Israel and every other "democratic Western nation" on the globe. The same puppet masters and the same puppets. The real enemy are the puppet masters. Once you make this connection, the insanity of the US support of Israel becomes clear.
