US Appears Set to Boycott UN Session on Racism
Conference Stance on Israel Is at Issue; Advocacy Groups Criticize White House
The Obama administration appears to be standing by its decision to boycott the World Conference Against Racism next week in Geneva, despite efforts to focus and tone down language in a draft conference document viewed as hostile toward Israel.
The preliminary conference document ran 45 pages and called for reparations for slavery, condemned the "validation of Islamophobia," and asserted that Israel's treatment of the Palestinians is grounded in racism.
In response to objections raised by negotiators from the Obama administration, the document has since been dramatically shortened and many of its sharp statements have been removed. Still, the administration seems uninterested in attending, stoking frustration among activist groups who have said that it is ironic that the nation's first black president would choose that course.
"For his administration not to be present at this global conversation is a disappointment," said Imani Countess, senior director for public affairs at TransAfrica Forum, an advocacy group that focuses on U.S. foreign policy. "For President Bush not to participate, that would have been expected. For Barack Obama's administration not to participate sends a disappointing signal. It says these issues are not important."
TransAfrica sent a letter to Obama late last week urging him to send a delegation to the United Nations-sponsored meeting, saying that to do otherwise would contradict his promise to engage even with nations that hold views that are contrary to those held by the United States. Moreover, the letter said, U.S. participation would send an important message to the rest of the world.
"U.S. participation in the conference is critical for both symbolic and political reasons," said the letter, which was also signed by other leaders, including Jesse L. Jackson and the heads of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation.
"Nations are watching your administration and will decide either to withdraw, or to lower the level of their participation, if the U.S. doesn't participate," the letter continued. "Reduced global participation would mark a significant setback to efforts to overcome racial inequality around the world."
White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said that although progress has been made in revising the draft text, concerns remain. "We hope that these remaining concerns will be addressed, so that the United States can reengage the conference negotiations in the hopes of arriving at a conference document that we can support," he said.
The White House offered no further details. But last week a bipartisan group of House members sent a letter to Obama congratulating him for deciding to boycott the meeting, which is scheduled to begin Monday.
"We applaud you for making it clear that the United States will not participate in a conference that undermines freedom of expression and is tainted by an anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic agenda," said the letter signed by seven members of Congress.
Israel and several Jewish advocacy groups have urged the United States and other nations not to take part in the conference. Canada and Italy have said they will not attend, and several other U.S. allies, including Australia, are considering not participating, according to representatives of several advocacy groups.
The week-long conference is expected to bring together delegations from countries around the globe and representatives of hundreds of nongovernmental organizations to take stock of the progress made in fighting bias since the last World Conference Against Racism was held in Durban, South Africa, in 2001. At that gathering, much of the discussion focused on Israeli treatment of Palestinians. The United States walked out of that meeting to protest an effort to compare Zionism to racism.
The United Nations has been working on next week's conference for the past three years, mostly without input from the United States. After Obama took office, he sent a delegation to Geneva, raising hopes that his administration would become a full partner in the effort. Hopes were lifted further when Obama had the United States rejoin the U.N. Human Rights Council.
But after sending the delegation to a preliminary meeting in Geneva, the administration declared the meeting's document unfocused, hostile to Israel and essentially not salvageable. After that, the document was heavily edited. Its original length was cut by half and specific mentions of Israel and the need to pay reparations for slavery were deleted.
The new draft created a sense among advocacy groups that the administration would reverse its decision. But the changes have apparently not been sufficient to win Obama's support.
"This is a big blow," Countess said. "Given the high priority the administration places on international engagement and multilateralism, this is just a little bit baffling."

Show AllObviously we live in a post-racial society (sarcasm alert).
Too bad. This would give Obama a little leverage over Bibi. Rahm wouldn't like that though.

A UN spokeswoman has confirmed that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will attend the UN conference on racism in Geneva.
This conference is nothing more than a roast of Israel. Granted, Israel has its faults, but not one Muslim country has any right to criticize. Look at how Turkey and Iraq treat their Kurds, or how Sudan and Mauritania treats its Blacks. Will these countries be brought up? I think not.
We'd better roast Israel figuratively before Israel roasts the world actively.
How do you plan to turn up the heat?
Turn off the bucks!
Not good enough. Israel is making a bundle selling US-made weaponry and technical assistance all around the planet.
And then all that fraud money made in the US is salted away in Israeli banks, too.
And who knows what else....
Very well said!!! Nail hit on head!
How do you know? I think most of those countries you mentioned has been brought up before. For some reason, you think Israel should be exempt. Why? If Turkey, or any other state (for some reason you only focus on Muslims), committed genocidal intentions as demonstrated by Israel recently, then bring them up for charges/condemnation too. You seem to want to only prosecute the non-white countries for abuse but wash the abuses of the western nations (Israel especially) under the rug. Your post reeks of hypocrisy typical of the many pro zionist posters.
Roast of Israel? Watch how you choose your words.
In Turkey, Kurds are active in all sections of Turkish society and three Turkish Presidents and a fourth of all parliamentarians are ethnic Kurds. The Kurds live all over the country and have millions in the country's largest city, Isranbul.
By contrast Palestinians are under occupation under bestial conditions in Gaza and the West Bank, and face less severe though still considerable discrimination within Israel itself.
The parallels between the Kurds of Turkey and the Palestinians under occupation are far outweighed by their differences.
How dare they call my little demented racist child a racist!
Pay people for their free labor and suffering, we are to busy crushing labor unions.
Now they should go back to the original wording. At least give oppressed peoples some theraputic relief.
Keep head in sand it is so much safer that way.Tony
Just another clue to Obama. The first Black American President boycotts a world conference on racism because of Israel. Pay attention Obama fans.

Mr. Obama is a House Negro. "We sick, Massah?"
Yep, sure is.
Since no effort has been made to redress the genocide and land theft against Native Americans, a strongly racist posture against them is necessary.
It is particularly putrescent on this site, too.
Just like any other flunkey of the US boss class that would have been installed in the Oval Office.
I have no words to really describe how I feel about this situation except to say, I agree, Hoyt.
It's a damned shame that everyone put so much emphasis upon Snobama's 'blackness' as evidence that we've moved pass this 'racism thing'. The fact is that with the continuing robbery of our aboriginal brethren in Amerika, the constant state sponsored harassment and violence against blacks and latinos and the push to close the borders by the right-wingers, racism is alive and well in Fortress Amerika.
I personally can see why the Snobama administration would boycott this event. For the Pres to send an emissary to Durban would mean that he would acknowledge that there is still a problem with racism in Fortress Amerika and he can't have that. After all, aren't we post racial? I wish we were post-statist, post-capitalist and post-militarist too.
US can withdraw from the world.
The world would heave a sigh of relief.
For those who are interested, you can sign an open letter urging President Obama to have the U.S. attend the conference:

P.S. Does anyone know the right way to insert hyperlinks in comments?
The United States of Israel against the world?
Now we have to copy the link and paste it in the address window.
it used to be easier to make a link automatically like in email.
I hope all those who read this and agree USA should go to the anti racism conference will at least sign the petition.

America, Israel's poodle.
America, no.
The USA, Israel's lapdog.
True. South & Central America have got it goin' on.

NOT SURPRISING!!!!
Even though I'm disappointed the US is not attending, I can't say I'm surprised. And I can't fault Obama either. I have this notion that once in office, a president (any president) learns things that simply are completely out of public view. Couple that with the idea that there might be groups who operate in the world, and in the US in particular, with an Ends Justify The Means mentality who would think nothing of murder, blackmail, etc. to the worst degree to move things in their direction. Maybe I just watched too much X-Files.
Think NSA/CIA/DOD/MIC. Read "JFK and the Unspeakable"
Not too much X-Files at all.
They hate us because of our freedom! Right, and I have this bridge....
A book that describes the Zionist society as 'racialist' was a bestseller in Israel for 19 weeks:
www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/966952.html
It seems they just that they don't like to admit their 'peculiar institutions' in front of outsiders.
Shameful.
What would you expect from Obama, the greatest Uncle Tom who has ever lived?
Do you think he'd betray his white masters?
Is this an AIPAC Sock Puppet of another color?
Jews aren't a race they're a religion that started in the Arabian desert.
Israel is a Monster the the US let grow out of control.
Back in the Dark Ages of Amerika when there was still racism here people like Obama were referred to as "Oreos", Black on the outside and White on the inside.
How can anyone deny the racism in places like Israel, The US, Colombia, and the world in general. Yes, cut off all aid to Israel. But, how can we get even close to that if our Government refuses to paticipate in a study and condemnation of racism?
Is Obama a secret Zionist? Or, is the secret out?
This is absolutely outrageous! Israel commits blatant genocide and Apartheid yet cry oy, anti-Semitism and holocust and the world drops its pants and bends over! It's about time people see Israel for what it is: the biggest racist in the world hell-bent on destroying an entire ethnic group while employing the same techniques that they so condenm. The world needs to get some cojones, stand up to this bully and set them in their place. Enough already!
When the U.S. opens dialog with Iran and gains Iran's cooperation in the mid-east over Netanyahu's strong objections a defining moment will have been reached.
I voted for Obama and I am glad.
But I never thought he'd cross one Israeli wish, do anything they disliked, but actually he has. The racism conference boycott sucks absolutely. One for the Obama detractors and justice both. However today Gates at the USMC University spoke of the Folly, spoke Against the US or Israel EVER attacking Iran. Their is now also ongoing US/Iran dialogue seeking stability and a BO committment to it. This was referred to in an Israeli newspaper as causing a loss of strategic influence in the region for Israel, which it does. One for Obama.
It is SHAMEFUL we not attend, but Israel is gonna get roasted-in NY no less-and the MSM will be howling like ass-shot coyotes. Sigh.
Bummer about NY, right on re Iran. Both huge issues with the IsraeliLobby, but trust Israel is hating rapprochment with Iran, it is huge.

What better way for the U.S. to speak to an issue than to attend a conference. How can our points, right or wrong, be made if we aren't there. I don't understand this school yard mentality that our government has: if we don't get our way, we won't play, and the world panders to us. The world moves on, with or without us. We are only truly important in our own eyes, and the U.S. media is that which paints the picture that our eyes see. It is our loss, and it is brought to us by our corporate controlled government. If Israel wasn't our permantant guard dog in the oilfields of the Middle East, and if Israelis didn't have such influence within our government, our government's presence in world affairs would be much different.
The Obama administration appears to be standing by its decision to boycott the World Conference Against Racism..
Boy, that line says so much.
Boy.
On the topic of the UN session on racism, I really enjoyed the commentary of Cynthia McKinney, 2008 Green candidate for president:

This Jew is a Palestinian by persuasion. All it took was a couple of trips to Palestine to see what was going on and to talk with the people in shops and on the street. I was treated with incredible hospitality even though I made it clear that I was Jewish. I encourage anyone who has enough money for the ticket to go and find out for yourself especially if you are Jewish.
In Peace
Martin: Kudos to you for finding out for yourself what is like and for telling others. I am not Jewish but, like you, I'm a "Palestinian by persuasion" mostly because my own people have gone thru a somewhat experience than they have, minus the bombs. One of the biggest and most frustrating obstacles I face is trying to educate people on this topic. I'm immediately shot down by "anti-Semitism" and "holocust" once those two words rear their ugly heads, it all goes downhill from there. However, as a Jewish, they would never use that trick on you so you can make a much valid and powerful argument with a lot more weight. I hope you continue speaking out and spreading the truth.
Thanks!
So, Israel has Obama by the balls, eh? Gee, from "Commander in Chief" to "Chief Flunky" all in a matter of days. Amazing.
"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."

If there was any question that the Israel (Jewish) Lobby doesn't control the U.S. government this should remove all doubt. Israel has violated international law with their illegal occupation and employed apartheid policies for decades. The only reason President Obama isn't saying, "tear down that wall Mr. Netenyahu," is because he knows that he would be on the next plane with Mr. Demjanjuk to stand trial for a "war crime." Face it there have been too many Holocausts throughout man's history (Chinese, Cambodian, Irish, Native American, Armenian, etc.) but the only one that the entire world must ackowledge are the events that occured to one group of individuals during WWII. Obviously there were no intellectuals, artists, feminists, homosexuals or Romas that the Germans slaughtered in death camps. Their names aren't listed at the Mac-tolerance museums that have sprotted up like cancer across the world over the last 15 years. Guess that's why they're the "chosen ones." If that isn't elitist and racist thinking then what is? If the contemporary Jewish mindset is any indication of what their forebearers were like then it is more than obvious why they were shunned by society for centuries.
