Israel is determined to keep its monopoly on nuclear weapons in the Middle East and is using its nuclear arsenal to enforce its demands. In essence, it's nuclear blackmail. Here's what Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli nuclear technician who confirmed the existence of Israel's nuclear weapons program, has to say about it:
I worked from 1976 to 1985 at the Israeli secret underground nuclear weapons production facility at the Dimona nuclear plant in the Negev desert. During my time there, I was involved in processing plutonium for 10 nuclear bombs per year. I realized that my country had already processed enough plutonium for 200 nuclear weapons. I became really afraid when we started processing lithium 6, which is only used for the hydrogen bomb.

I felt that I had to prevent a nuclear holocaust in the Middle East, so I took 60 pictures of the underground nuclear weapons processing plant, some 75 meters under the Dimona plant. I resigned my post and left Israel in 1986. I first went to Australia and then made a connection with the Times in London. After a group of nuclear scientists verified my photos as proving Israeli nuclear weapons production, my story was published in England. A few months later, I was kidnapped by the Israelis in Rome and sent secretly by ship to Israel, where I was subjected to a closed military trial without counsel. I was sentenced to 18 years in prison. I spent 12 years in solitary confinement.

Now I am trapped inside Israel, and I'm being threatened with more prison time for speaking to people like you.

Carter's estimate of the size of the Israeli arsenal is probably based on Vanunu's information.

If I remember correctly, Bush said during his recent Middle East jaunt he would GIVE the Saudis nuclear weapons just to let them keep up with the 'Jonesteins' (Israel)...

... and we KNOW we can trust the Saudis...right?

I also recall that Israel gained it's nuclear weapons technology by SPYING on the US and using US/Israeli dual citizens to steal the requisite information, data and technologies.

When ever the USA sells any weapon to a country, they give the counter weapon to Israel. The Arms race is alive and well as long as the USA Gov. makes millions off it and the American tax payers pay for it.

When negotiations are conducted with Iran vis-a-vis nukes, Israel should be included. You can't force Iran to fail to arm themselves in the face of Israeli nuclear superiority. Symmetry, basic fairness, is required in the negotiations. Of course, we should disarm as well.

So what is so surprising about Israel having major nuclear arms?? Duh............

But, why is he-and the media [except for me] mute about Vanunu's recent life, freedom of speech trial and the Norwegian connection?

In June 1978, President Jimmy Carter sent a private letter to the Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza lauding Somoza for the "human rights initiatives" while he criticized Somoza publicly. Carter had made "human rights" a centerpiece of his interventionist propaganda ( Morris Morley, Washington, Somoza and the Sandinistas, 1994, pp 115-116). This two-faced policy occurred during one of the bloodiest periods of Somoza's rule when he was bombing cities sympathetic to the revolution. Carter's rhetorical declaration of concern for human rights was for public consumption, his private assurances to Somoza encouraged the dictator to continue his scorched earth policy.

Carter's attempt to throttle a popular revolution to preserve the Somocista state and US dominance clearly belied his pretensions of being a "human rights" President. His legacy of using "Human Rights" to project imperial military power became standard operating procedure for Reagan, Clinton and both Bush presidencies.

He also pushed the MX missile, the neutron bomb, and in fact, corrupted the NDC in 1980 with the Unit Rule to keep the nomination and then conceded the election to Reagan and Bush before the polls were closed in Western States, disheartening democratic voters, resulting in a Republican controlled senate. He was and is, a tool of Rockefeller and Brzezinski, like Hillery and Obama, as was Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr. He is not a nice or honorable man!

Israel has lost its pissant little war. The Palestinians can make babies faster than the Jews can murder them, and that's all that matters at this point. One of these days the FBI agents who interrogated the Israeli "movers" in the white van (cheering the burning twin towers and videotaping the whole thing) are going to spill the beans. And then all the AIPAC money in the world won't be enough to keep the US Congress as an occupied Israeli territory.

astrwlfgng, good post. I remember the story about the Israelis in the parking lot who were celebrating while watching the Twin Towers fall on 9/11. They were high-fiveing each other, laughing, and even had a bottle of champagne. The only thing that was missing was the sign "Mission Accomplished."
