It’s Too Late for Me, But These 6 Healthcare Reforms Could Save Your Life

Major healthcare reform happened before, and it can again, but only through the concerted and sustained efforts by progressive activists and politicians.

Two months ago, I was given a death sentence.

I was told that I have incurable stage 4 metastatic cancer and have just a few months left. This final diagnosis was the culmination of a 22-month journey through our healthcare system. I was admitted to the hospital twice for kidney and bladder cancer related surgeries as well as a trip to the Emergency Room which resulted in a three-day hospital stay. I’ve also had numerous out-patient immuno- and chemo-therapy procedures. The kidney and bladder cancers were supposed to have been localized and contained.

Worker Militancy Has Fueled a Surge in Union Growth and Popularity

The labor movement is at a critical crossroads in the United States. We continue to face the extreme danger of reaction and attack, but we also have an enormous opportunity to fight back against those exploiting the working class and seeking to undermine our unity.

If there's one picture to summarize the growing militancy of many unions and workers, let's call it the picket sign. Behind that image is an important message as well–forceful challenges to big corporations benefit all working people and resonate with the broader public.

And, they are a key to winning improved living standards for the entire working class and to the growth of unions. For nurses, the strike has always been one of our most important tools for protecting patients from the health and safety damage created by corporate cost-cutting.

UK Nurses Strike to Save Lives and End Tory Attack on NHS

"People aren't dying because nurses are striking," said one union leader. "Nurses are striking because people are dying."

Nurses at 55 National Health Service facilities across England launched a two-day strike on Wednesday after the United Kingdom's right-wing government, led by Tory Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, refused to open formal negotiations over pay and patient safety.

Royal College of Nursing (RCN) general secretary Pat Cullen called the 12-hour work stoppages on Wednesday and Thursday—which come after nurses at dozens of NHS facilities in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland participated in the union's first-ever national strike in December—"a modest escalation before a sharp increase in under three weeks from now." There is a strike fund, and picket line locations can be found here.

The New York City labor movement supports striking members of the New York State Nurses Association on January 9, 2023.

As 7,000+ Nurses Strike in NYC, 'Greedy Hospitals' Told to Approve Fair Deal

"If CEOs can double their pay, we can give workers a fair contract," said U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman. "Montefiore, Mount Sinai, it's time for you to step up and get this done."

    Jan 09, 2023

More than 7,000 unionized nurses at two of New York City's largest hospitals began a strike on Monday morning "for fair contracts that improve patient care."

"Nurses don't want to strike," the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) said late Sunday in a statement. "Bosses have pushed us to strike by refusing to seriously consider our proposals to address the desperate crisis of unsafe staffing that harms our patients."
