Senator Feinstein Proposes Weak Green New Deal Substitute

WASHINGTON

Following a confrontation with young people from the Sunrise Movement on Friday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein released a draft resolution calling for a carbon tax and the restoration of Obama-era climate policies. Feinstein's proposal is meant to serve as an alternative to the Green New Deal resolution introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey.

"Senator Feinstein's climate resolution is outmoded and cynical politics at its worst," said Bill Snape, senior counsel at the Center for Biological Diversity. "It's more of the same half-measures and loopholes for polluting industries that have failed us for more than three decades."

Feinstein's proposal comes as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to bring the Markey-Ocasio-Cortez resolution up for a vote as soon as this week.

"Feinstein can't hide behind this anemic proposal to avoid supporting the real Green New Deal. She needs to get with it or get out of the way," Snape said. "Her grandchildren and millions of other Americans will suffer horrible climate chaos if we fail to address climate change on a wartime footing."

At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
