Trump Must Urge Sisi to End Abuses - Reprieve
Commenting on today's visit to the White House by Egypt's President, Abdelfattah al Sisi, Maya Foa – a director at Reprieve – said:
“As President Sisi visits the White House, his government is overseeing a campaign of repression that flies in the face of American values. Thousands of people – including protestors, journalists, bloggers and others – languish in horrific prison conditions, with many being tortured. Hundreds still face the death penalty in unfair mass trials that make a mockery of due process. Among them are people who were arrested as children, like Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa. President Trump must urge Sisi to end these appalling abuses, and release Ibrahim and the many like him.”
FRIENDS: Now More Than Ever
Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
